summary: After one night of respite, the reader confronts the day to realize the shadows haven't quite disappeared yet.
There's a timid sunbeam lighting up your cozy little room. Nothing scary or menacing in view. You look over to your nightstand with barely opened eyes to see your mushroom light still on. The clock on your desk shines the time. 7:00am.
7am?!
You sit straight up, immediately noticing the big dent on the left side of your bed. Yes, of course, Jacob came in last night. Your cheeks flush with the thought of having slept so soundly next to the heaping mountain of muscles that is your friend. You feel so confused and well-rested. For the first time in a few weeks, you awoke calmly. This might have been the best night of sleep of your whole damn life, and it's 7:00am! You managed to wake up before your alarm. You wouldn't have to be rushing to school for once. You were usually only able to fall asleep when the sun started shining and chased away the threatening shadows of the night. So, being late to school was a recurring occurrence for you. For once, your father wouldn't have to come in to try and wake you up. You were pushing away your blankets to get up when there was a knock on your door before it slowly cracked open.
"Sweetheart, time to wake up. Don't want to be late for sch-"
Your father's traits lifted up in surprise, and honestly, you couldn’t really blame the man. You didn't keep track of all the mornings he found you all tangled up in your blankets, hair sprawled everywhere like a bird's nest, saliva drooling down your chin.
"Did you sleep well?"
You nodded eagerly, a sincere smile spreading on your lips. Charlie seemed incredibly thrilled by that piece of news. He was no stranger to the nightmares haunting your nights and was brokenhearted to see you so tired and on edge all the time.
"Well, then. Better get down and eat breakfast before you head to school." He gave you a timid smile before softly closing your door.
You had your first breakfast with your dad in a long time. He was particularly chirpy, and you kept catching his relieved gaze. You left for school on time and had a really great day. You felt awake and energized. Participating in class and your little social circle once again felt like a rush. Your efforts were welcomed with gigantic smiles from your teachers and friends. For a second, you thought the weeks of anguish and terror might finally be behind you. Maybe a night with Jacob had been the only thing you needed to put this whole thing behind you. However, as the sun went down and shadows stretched on the ground, you got more flinchy and twitchy. Once more, you turned at every odd sound, looking over your shoulder as you left the school grounds. You almost ran to your car, locking all the doors, and left a trail of dust with how fast you headed back home on the powdery roads of Forks.
Dinner with your father was much more somber than the breakfast you shared this morning. You felt like a dagger to your heart, his disappointment when he saw you jump as he caught you by surprise in the kitchen. You usually were always careful about hiding your internal conflict from Charlie. Yet the frustration you felt tonight weighed much more than the want to hide everything from him.
Once dinner was over, you climbed the stairs with heavy steps, feeling the dread in your body get worse the closer you got to your bedroom. You opened the door to find a space very different than the one you had left when you awoke this morning. Your still unmade bed didn't feel so inviting tonight. Long gone were the rays of sunshine that scared the shadows away. The room you faced was now dark and gloomy. Nothing about it felt safe or secure.
You rushed in to turn on your mushroom light and sat on your bed, trying to summon all your courage to breathe calmly.
It's over now. Nightmares are just that. They aren't real. I'm safe now.
No matter how much you would repeat it, those words felt empty and fake. You got up, put your pajamas on, and as you were ready to get in bed, you noticed a piece of clothing jutting out from under one of the pillows. You lifted it up to find the T-shirt you lent to Jacob. He didn't keep it. He left your house shirtless so you could keep the stupid piece of clothing. You grabbed it and held it up to your nose. Immediately, your senses were overpowered by his woodsy scent. You fell to your bed, shirt still pressed on your face as you let a deep sigh leave your lungs.
Grabbing your phone on the night table, you hesitated. Your fingers hovered over the keyboard before you closed the device and threw it away.
The clock had just struck midnight when you heard something scratching outside. You almost had a heart attack when you saw Jacob hanging onto your window, motioning for you to open it.
"Jacob Black. What the hell are you doing? Do you want to kill me?!"
Your tall friend let out a deep chuckle as he swiftly stepped into your room without making a noise. His gaze fell onto the fort you had built yourself. There were pillows and blankets lined all around your bed, a very feeble attempt at a barrier. The tv screen was paused on one of your favorite movie. He gave you a worried look and took a second to really take in the state you were in. You didn't look like the relaxed girl he had, reluctantly, left in a peaceful slumber this morning.
"What?" you defensively crossed your arms on your chest, already sensing where this conversation would be going.
"What are you doing?" he quietly asked, his head slightly leaning on one side.
"I was watching a movie."
You immediately saw a shadow pass in his dark eyes and felt a familiar pain ring in your chest. You couldn't live with disappointing both your father and Jacob. Worse, you couldn't live with the pity in their eyes. If only the bad dreams could stay away.
"What are you doing," you finally asked, a bit more roughly than you had intended.
He hesitated, sensing you had been offended in some way. "I just did a quick run around the perimeter, but then I saw the light open and just wanted to make sure you were okay."
Your expression softened at the concern painted on his handsome face. Fear did make you more on edge, but you knew Jacob had done nothing to deserve that anger. You sighed before plopping down on your bed.
"That's very nice of you, but I am okay. I just didn't feel tired yet."
You felt adamant about telling him of the return of the paranoia. You were already so disappointed in yourself. You couldn't even muster the bravery to be in your room alone at night. What would it even do if you told him the truth? It felt so shameful to ask again for his help, to ask him to watch over you while you were sleeping. Just because, like a child, you were afraid of the dark and the beasts it hid. You were instantly relieved when he gave you a suspicious glance as if he might believe your lie. You gave him your best smile, trying to prove how relaxed you were. You only wanted to chase the worries away from his chocolate eyes.
That could have worked if only the sound of your house creaking under a strong gust of wind and a branch scratching on your window hadn't made you flinch so damn hard.
Jacob's gaze hardened over your tense figure. You expected him to make a comment, to confront you. As you waited anxiously for the ax to drop, he finally walked over to your bed, sat, and pointed to your television.
"May I join you then?"
You initiated him to one of your best comfort movies. It required absolutely no brain power and just helped you feel better. Always a good player, Jake obliged and even seemed to enjoy it. When you were done, you spent another hour just chatting about nothing and everything. You tried hiding your clock from his sight and hoped he wouldn't notice time flying away, but sadly, there wasn't much your figure could hide from his wolfish sight.
"It's getting late. I should probably go," He muttered after an hour of mindless chatting. His dark eyes fixed on your features, you faced each other, forearms tucked under your head while you lay on your side. You couldn't help your shoulders and jaw from tensing up at his words. The happiness and carelessness he had brought you vanished as if it never occurred. Fear crept up in your belly at the thought of being alone in the dark again.
You gave him a tight smile as you nodded. He hesitantly got up, giving you another weird look. You barely registered it, too focused on avoiding falling into a panicked state. He walked to the window, and as you thought he was about to leave, he turned around on a whim.
"I really don't understand you. Even in this state, you won't ask for my help?"
His outburst surprised you and unintentionally made you recoil at the swift motion. He sighed deeply, "Please don't look at me like this. I want to understand. Why don't you want my help?" he repeated, annoyance rippling in waves from his body.
"I- I'm not sure what you're talking about," you responded, determined to hang on to the shred of dignity you had left.
He let out a sarcastic laugh. It was dry and reeked of disdain towards this fluke you were trying to fool him with. "Stop playing Y/n. You reek of fear."
His words were like a punch in the gut. You felt shame hitting you as you realized how stupid you had been.
"See? Your reaction only confirms what I already knew. What I don't understand is why you insist on facing this alone. You can always call me, and I will always come through for you. Have I not proven that?"
"You did, but it's not your responsibility to fix me. To fix this."
"Not my responsibility?" he scoffed. He turned around while dragging his hand through his hair. He was a mix of so many emotions you couldn't pinpoint what was brewing in his brain. He stayed silent for so long that you thought he would leave you like this. You were about to add something when he raised his voice. "I would give everything to go back to that night. To be there by your side. Maybe you wouldn't have to go through that, or at least I would have been the one to rip to shreds that bloodsucker." Flames of rage danced in his eyes while you stood speechless, gawking at him.
You were at a loss for words. You had seen Jake in many different states in your friendship, but he never looked so conflicted. Anger and sadness seemed to be battling out the right to overpower him. For a rare moment, he looked incredibly vulnerable. He was back to being that innocent teenager you had always known. You approached, unsure whether that would make him lash out, but he stayed put, his eyes fixed on the ground. You knew Jacob felt responsible for what happened to you. What you didn't know is that he tortured himself with it. Your heart ached at the thought, and any frustration you had felt up to this point melted.
Softly, you grabbed his hand. "Jacob, look at me."
When he finally turned around and lifted his gaze, tears hung on to the line of his long lashes. The sight of it made your throat close up.
"Why won't you let me care for you," he whispered, inches from you.
His gaze was so deep and carried a tsunami of emotions. Without even thinking about it, you grabbed his face. Both of your hands cradled his soft and warm skin. You saw goosebumps creep up his muscled arms, mirroring the one on yours. Bringing his forehead to your own, you took a deep breath.
"I don't want to be a burden."
Saying the words that'd been ringing in your head for so long felt almost exhilarating while also being incredibly relieving. Contrary to the belief of your messed up head, the world didn't end or break in two once the thought left your lips.
"I've always thought you were such an incredible person and couldn't help but always want to be better for you. Ever since you phased, that feeling only got more intense. You've evolved so much in the past few months, and I'm still old me. When I got attacked, it was the most horrible experience of my life, but it also reinforced that concept. I couldn't even walk from yours to Emily's cabin without being attacked. The boys had to risk their lives to save me. I didn't even get one scratch, and still, I'm afraid of the dark. I'm afraid to sleep alone. I'm afraid if I let my guard down for one second... it'll happen again. Which means that I'll either die or be a burden for you guys once more because I can't even defend myself against something like that. You're already so good to me. I don't want to add this to your list of things to worry about."
Your eyes stayed closed even after you finished and controlled your breathing again. Saying it aloud was incredible, but to open your eyes to face his reaction felt nerve-racking. You were about to when a strong pair of arms wrapped around you.
"You are not and will never be a burden to me." His tone was soft and felt a little strangled. In your dimly lit little room, while the rest of the world was in a peaceful slumber, Jacob's words felt like the only thing that mattered.
He pulled back after a moment but still held you close. "I don't know what gave you the impression that you were a burden. If it ever was something I did, I want to apologize."
"I remember so vividly the look on your face when the boys brought me back to the cabin. You had the same disappointed expression as you have just now. I promise I'm trying to heal as fast I can, but this... this is harder than I thought it would be."
Confusion was now the only emotion on his face, clear as day. "Disappointed? Y/n, I never was disappointed. It was the worst, terrifying, shit your pants kind of fear I've ever felt. It's agony to know you're so ridden with fear. I was disappointed to learn that tonight was still hard for you, not because I think you're not healing fast enough, but because I hoped I finally helped you feel better. I feel so bad you have to live with these memories for your whole life. I just wish I could make them disappear."
That's when you understood the slim difference between disappointment and defeat. One was channeled towards you, and the other wasn't. For Jacob, it had always been directed at himself.
"Jacob, you're the only one who makes me breathe a little easier. You're the only reason I slept soundly last night." A new light illuminated his eyes. You steadied yourself before you continued, your tone slightly hushed. "You've always had that specific calming effect on me. You're the only person who makes things better for me. Ever since we were kids. I have always felt safe with you. You're like my personal haven."
It felt like a big thing to say, but you wanted that sadness to leave his face. You wanted his eyes to be filled with light again, and somehow, it felt right to tell him about all this. He spent so much time worrying about everything and everyone. He deserved to know how appreciated he was. He deserved to know what he meant to you.
Emotion thickened the air. So much so that it felt like you couldn't breathe just right. Your hands slid from his cheeks delicately. You placed one at the nape of his neck while the other grabbed the top of his hair. "Jake, I don't think you even understand how much you mean to me."
Time stood still for a moment. Your eyes focused on each other, and the rest of the world ceased to exist.
 "Y/n, I-" his eyes held something heavier. He opened his mouth as if he was about to say something before deciding better of it. It almost looked like it cost him to try and get the words out. He gave up in a huff, and whatever was in his gaze, whatever he thought about, vanished. Some part of you wanted to push him, to ask, but tonight had been a rollercoaster enough. You could let it go for now. He pulled you in for another hug before releasing you a little.
"So, now that we've established that you are not a burden." he started softly.
"And that this is in no way your fault," you added with a grin.
He rolled his eyes, "Uhm. Can you tell me what you actually need? I can stay here with you if you want."
You felt a pang of your old fears scratch at your heart, but you let them all go in one breath. "I would very much like that."
You tucked yourselves in bed for the second night in a row. You hesitated to turn off the light, but always so observant, Jacob assured you it didn't bother him to keep it open. You lay side by side in silence. You were focused on becoming familiar with the ordinary and hazardous sounds an old house made at night when Jacob started to whisper.
"I know you think you aren't as fearless as us, but I can assure you everyone in our tribe thinks you are the bravest person they've ever met. Not many people would feel comfortable hanging out with a bunch of new werewolves."
"Brave or totally crazy," you added while making a wicked-looking face. His eyes disappeared in his bright smile, and you wished you could snap a picture of it.
"No, but really, you're the only one who stayed by my side all throughout my phasing process. No matter how dangerous it was for you. If that's not the definition of bravery, I don't know what is." He turned pensive again while his gaze darkened.
You unwillingly recalled the phasing process of Jacob. All the terrible memories flashed before your eyes. His screams of pain still rang in your ears. You remember distinctly every time you wished to take his place. If you could have taken away some of his pain, you would have in an instant. The least you could do was stay by his side no matter what. You had to fight with Billy and the rest of the pack, but in the end, even they couldn't keep you away. No one could have.
You slid into his arms, and his body tensed under the new touch before quickly relaxing to envelop you in a tight embrace.
"I would never leave you alone," you mumbled in his chest. "I know you like to have this strong and impressive appearance, but inside, you're still the same little Jacob I've always known. I know you need me."
You lightly pressed your lips onto his chest and nuzzled farther into him. Fireworks were exploding in the boy's chest as he returned the gesture with a kiss on your head.
"And Jake?"
"Uhm?"
"Don't think I didn't notice you wanted to tell me something important earlier. For tonight, it's okay, but we'll have to talk about that."

can u write something with seth being more touchy than usual nd ppl noticing nd teasing him about it, nd like u can write the rest😔❤️IDK IF U TAKE REQUESTS ND ITS FINE IF U DON'T DO U, LOVE UR WRITING💞
seth clearwater x reader
summary: you and seth attend edward and bella’s wedding that takes place in the evening (unlike in the movies where it's noon or something)
i barely ever write anymore, i’m so sorry you had to wait this long for this 😔
i clumsily entered the living room and as i did, two pairs of eyes measured me up and down before my parents jumped up and hugged me.
“you look stunning sweetheart” my mom said, tucking strands of my hair behind my ear. “i knew this shade of purple would look incredible on you”
“thanks, mom”
“i thought you weren’t supposed to show up looking prettier than the bride” my dad joked.
i rolled my eyes and hugged him, just as the doorbell rang. i followed behind my parents, nervously fidgeting with my dress. as soon as they opened the door, they stepped aside, revealing my boyfriend.
my handsome boy.
he was holding two bouqutes of flowers, one of which he handed to my mom, who accepted it happily.
as his gaze met mine, his eyes widened and the world stood still, like it did the first time we ever saw each other.
“you are so beautiful”
my parents made us pose for a picture and they watched us in awe as we headed towards the car.
seth wrapped his arm around my waist and i gently let my head fall onto his shoulder.
“whose car is this?”
“billy lend me jacob’s since he’s… you know”
he started the engine and drove slowly, since it was still quite early.
“i still can’t believe edward and bella are getting married! i mean, everyone knows how in love they are, but still, this is huge! and they’re both just 18” i blurted out.
“it is kind of mind blowing"
seth placed his right hand on my thigh and my heart skipped a beat.
“is this alright?”
“yes” i answered and gave him a huge smile, which he must’ve seen, even though his eyes were glued to the road, because a shy smile quickly grew on his face.
"do you think they’re too young though?" seth asked, after taking a few moments to compose himself. "bella and edward, i mean”
“they are, they’re just about to graduate. on the other hand, they love each other and love drives us all crazy” i giggled.
“do i make you crazy?” seth asked jokingly.
“soo insane, but i bet it’s nothing compared to the other way around”
“i’m crazy about you” seth looked at me for a slight moment and my heart jumped again.
“i’m crazy about you too, seth, you have no idea”
after a little while, he pulled into the cullens’ driveway and reached for my hand as he opened the door for me.
i placed my palm in his and kissed him briefly. his face lit up and he kept me close, his arm around my waist.
we were warmly welcomed by esme, who led us to the garden.
fairy lights hung from the trees, resembling fireflies. a few rows of wooden seats were placed before the altar that stood covered in white, dainty flowers, much like the rest of the place. some of their petals had fallen on the ground, giving the scene a fairytale-like air.
seth placed his warm hand on my lower back and kissed my cheek.
“are you alright, sweetheart?”
“it’s beautiful” i stated, still in awe of the remarcable scenery.
“so beautiful” he whispered.
i turned to him, but he was already looking at me.
we sat down and people started showing up.
finally, bella walked down the aisle, holding tightly onto her father’s arm. edward stood patiently, looking at her as if it was only the two of them, nothing else mattered. tears streamed down my face, overwhelmed by the beauty of it all.
they vowed and kissed and it hit me - there’s no such thing as ‘too early’ when it comes to love. it’s all about taking risks and putting your pride aside, because once you find the one person you know was made for you, you must hold tightly onto them.
“i love you so much” i whispered to seth.
“i love you too, beautiful” he gently placed his right hand on my hair and kissed my forehead.
his left hand stayed on my thigh, while the other fell onto my shoulder.
once the party started, seth and i were separted by the crowd, when bella pulled me aside.
“congratulations, sweet girl, you did it!”
i embraced her into a hug, and when i tried pulling away, she held me a bit tighter and whispered "not yet, i just need a moment"
"wow, you're a mess!" i laughed, referring to her makeup, which was mostly gone, due to her crying multiple times. "but you're a pretty mess and i don't blame you; God knows how many times i cried during the ceremony and it's not even my wedding!"
"it's so not safe for me to cry here, alice yells at me and emmett makes fun of me"
“where’s he taking you for the honeymoon?” i asked, excitedly.
“i really don’t know, he won’t tell me” bella laughed.
suddenly, i felt a hand on my waist and felt seth’s lips on my shoulder.
“well, hello to you too” i laughed and pecked his lips.
bella giggled awkwardly and looked around for her groom, who was at her side in an instant.
“you better slow it down, seth, these people seem too tired to handle another wedding tonight” edward joked and we all burst out laughing, but seth’s hands remained glued to my hips.
after a few moments, they both laughed as if one of them had cracked some joke bella and i couldn't hear, so she and i simply exchanged a suspicious look.
the newly wed couple was quickly stolen away from us by the other guests, and seth and i found ourselves wandering towards the quiet forest.
we got to a dimly lit opening; “a thousand years” could still be heard from the speakers.
“how can i love when i’m afraid to fall?”
seth tenderly let his hands fall onto my hips and looked me in my eyes and the same feeling came right back into my chest.
“all of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow”
i let my head rest somewhere between his chest and his shoulder, while we slow danced.
"i have died everyday waiting for you/ darling don't be afraid, i have loved you for a thousand years"
seth and i hummed along and mumbled the lyric "i'll love you for a thousand more"

Part Seven
Being away from Paul was harder than you anticipated. You found yourself much more agitated than usual, snapping at your parents when they asked you questions, and finding it hard to sit still. You did your best to hide this, not wanting to give your parents any more reasons to be suspicious. Still, they took your new attitude to heart, and one night at dinner, they decided to approach you about it.
“Sweetheart, we’re just worried about you. You’ve been… different the past few weeks.” Your mother began, gently placing her fork down on her plate.
“Oh have I? I haven’t noticed.” You grumbled, pushing your mashed potatoes into a pile before flattening them down again.
Your father sighed, shaking his head. “Y/N, please don’t be difficult. You’ve been so hostile and closed off recently. We just want to know what’s going on in your life. How are your friends?”
“They’re fine. I only see them during lunch, so I don’t really know what’s going on with them.” You answered curtly, not having the will to give them additional information.
Your parents shared a look, before returning their gaze to you.
“Is this about that boy?” Your mother questioned, picking her fork up and shoveling peas onto it. “I can’t imagine another reason for this behavior.”
You laughed a little, which surprised them. “You really can’t? Mom- you grounded me and took my phone away during the last few months of my senior year. All I do is go to school, then sit alone at home until you guys get off of work. I can’t even talk to anyone to pass the time, so I just sit and reread everything on my bookshelf. Of course I’m going to be annoyed all the time. It has nothing to do with Paul.”
“You understand we’re just trying to keep you safe, right?” Your father asked, his voice soft for such a bold statement.
“Yes. You’re keeping me safe from the dangers that Bella made up.”
Your mother sighed, her voice heavier than your fathers. “Charlie said Bella had expressed the same concerns to him, Y/N. Why would she lie to her father, the chief of police, about these people being dangerous?”
“Because she was hurt! Her and her friend Jacob got into a fight, so she was worried it was because he had fallen into a bad crowd. She realized she was wrong, and she apologizes to me every time I see her. Yes she told Charlie what she thought, but she still spends everyday on the Reservation with them! Charlie’s best friend is Jacob’s father, who is more than knowledgeable about that everyone is up to. They both know that no one’s in a gang or doing drugs.” You argued, frustration sweeping over you.
Both of your parents seemed unsure of what to say, so the conversation fell away. You finished eating and headed up to your room once you had cleared the table and washed the dishes.
You had finished your homework during the day, and it was too early to go to bed. You felt restless- like an animal with their arm caught in a trap.
You’d barely been able to talk to Paul, except the few times during lunch you would borrow someone’s phone to call him. He started recognizing the numbers, and usually picked up during the first ring. You knew he should have been sleeping, since nights were spent patrolling, but you couldn’t find it in yourself to care much about disturbing him, since you knew that both of you were struggling being apart.
The hold that the imprint bond had on you wasn’t something you were prepared for. Aside from feeling bummed about not seeing Paul, you didn’t think much else would happen. Yet, after the first week of being grounded, you started having problems falling asleep. You’d lay awake at night and wonder where he was, what he was doing. It was like he had consumed every thought you had- everything led back to him. You knew in your heart that he must be in even worse shape than you were, and with his head clouded by thoughts of you, worry over his safety became unbearable. He was out hunting vampires- how could he do that while spending all of his time thinking about you?
After a while of being lost in your own thoughts, you heard a knock at your bedroom door. You grabbed the book that was on your nightstand in attempts to look busy, and called them to come in. Both of your parents appeared in the doorway, small smiles on their faces.
“Hi honey. Can we come in? We wanted to talk with you.” Your father spoke, entering your small room anyway.
You crossed your legs to give them room to sit on your bed, and they both did. They looked at each other coyly, before handing you your cellphone without a word.
“Woah- wait. What’s going on?” You asked, clutching the phone in your hands.
“We… talked to Charlie a little bit ago, and he corroborated everything you said. He apologized for Bella’s behavior and any inconveniences she may have caused, and said that the boys on the reservation were probably better influences than the boys in Forks. We’ve decided to unground you.” Your mother answered, reaching out to grab your arm gently.
Your father cleared his throat, his stern eyes looking at you over his glasses. “There are some more rules, however. We would like to meet this Paul fellow as soon as possible. We trust you as an adult to make your own choices, but we are still your parents. You seem to care quite a bit about him, and I’d imagine you’ll want to have him around here, too. If you’re hanging out at our house, you need to stay in the living room. He needs to leave by 9 during the week, and 11 on the weekends. Additionally, if you are going to out, your curfew is still 10 on school nights. However, seeing as you are leaving for college soon, we’ll extend your weekend curfew until midnight. You need to keep your phone on you at all times, and respond when we call, alright?”
You squealed a bit and lunged forward, taking both your parents in a huge hug. “Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have no idea how much this means to me.”
They hugged you back lovingly, your mother whispering to you. “We love you.”
“I love you guys too.”
~~~
The next day at lunch, you sat down at the table, and pulled your phone out of your pocket, holding it up triumphantly.
“No way! You got your phone back? Does that mean you’ll stop using my minutes?” Jessica asked, her eyes wide with excitement.
“Yes! Aaaaand, it means I’m officially no longer grounded.” You yelled, smiling widely.
Everyone cheered, Mike especially since he had been so keen on breaking you out of your house.
Bella sat down in the middle of the commotion, and eyed everyone weirdly. You filled her in on the news, and a wave of relief visibly coursed through her.
“Oh good. Paul will stop moping around when he finds out you’re ungrounded. Have you talked to him yet?” She asked, picking up her sandwich and taking a bite.
You shook your head, “Actually, I was thinking of surprising him. I need your help.”
Bella readily agreed, seemingly wanting to do whatever she could to make up for the chaos she inevitably caused. You didn’t mind that she felt she needed to make it up to you, even if you weren’t upset anymore.
You finalized the details for the next day with her and Jacob, before your lunch period ended.
Jacob was going to get the pack to First Beach the next afternoon, where you and Bella would show up and surprise them. You could imagine the look on Paul’s face when he saw you, and the thought of that alone made you giddy.
You glided through school, all thoughts consumed by the boy with the leather jacket and kind heart who was waiting desperately to have you back in his arms.
Bella pulled into the first parking spot she found, and you were practically bouncing in your seat. As soon as the engine was off, you were out of the truck and moving toward the beach. She laughed at your excitement, smiling at the way you couldn’t seem to help yourself.
When you actually got onto the sand, there wasn’t anyone else around besides the pack. They were lounging around by the water, laughing and joking with each other loudly.
You would recognize Paul anywhere, just by seeing him from behind. He was half heartedly kicking a soccer ball around with Jared and Seth- his slumped shoulders evident even from across the beach. He looked tired, much more than anyone else did. His movements were slow, like he was on autopilot instead of actually meaning them.
The familiar tug in your chest pulled at your heart, beckoning you to get closer. You couldn’t help yourself, essentially moving at full speed to run to him, leaving Bella behind.
The sand on the beach was damp with fresh rain, so it made it easier for you to move quickly. Jared noticed you first, and he called out to Paul, telling him to turn around. He did, just seconds before you had made your way over to him. He didn’t even have time to react to seeing you before you jumped into his arms. He picked you up at once, and swung you around, pulling you tightly against his body. The two of you laughed, happy to be back in one another’s arms.
“It’s you. Jesus it’s actually you.” Paul murmured, once he placed your feet back underneath you.
“It’s me.” You breathed, inhaling his scent as deeply as you could.
Paul rested his chin on the top of your head, and the two of you stayed entwined. You felt the stress of the last few weeks melt away at his touch, and high at the feeling of being with him once more.
Paul pulled away to look at you, smiling widely. “How are you here? Did Bella break you out of prison for the day?”
“I’m actually free. My parents talked to Charlie, and he told them that you guys aren’t gang members or drug addicts. Plus they were getting annoyed with my constant moping around the house.” You responded, resting your hands against Paul’s large chest.
At this, he pulled you against him again, and whispered to you. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“I’ve missed you too.” You responded, “More than I think I should have.”
He released you with a kiss on the forehead, and you felt your face warm up at the gesture. He took your hand and intertwined your fingers together, tugging you over to sit down on one of the many beach blankets they had laying around.
Leah gave you a soft smile, “Glad you’re here, Y/N. Paul’s been absolutely insufferable without you.”
Bella had finally made her way over to the pack, and she sat next to Jacob, their sides touching. “Yeah, Y/N wasn’t much better.”
You shrugged in response, letting your shoulder rest against Paul’s. “What can I say? I’ve grown fond of this idiot.”
Everyone laughed lightly, shaking their heads at the way you and Paul seemed to glow together. The pack filled you in on the last few weeks apart, and you and Bella gave them updates on your life.
“Oh by the way, are you coming to Tyler’s party next weekend?” You asked Bella, tilting your head.
She shook her head in response. “I didn’t know Tyler was having a party. I wasn’t invited.”
You rolled your eyes. “It’s a party, Bella. You don’t need an invitation, there’s not going to be a bouncer.”
She laughed lightly, smiling at you. “Oh, I guess you’re right. Parties aren’t really my thing, though. Not a fan of the whole teenage drinking culture.”
“Totally understand. Tyler’s parties usually get out of hand, anyway. The amount of times it ends with us running from the cops is bad. Probably better to stay away.” You answered honestly.
“Yeah, Mike had filled me in. He’d been really stressed about you not being to go, for some reason.” She responded, but then immediately looked like she regretted it.
Paul stiffened at this, and you could tell that he was imminently jealous of Mike, and his desire to be near you. You knew Paul didn’t have anything to worry about, but you also kind of enjoyed the way he was becoming protective of you.
“Yeah, Mike and I are kind of a package party deal.” You shrugged, tossing the hair off of your shoulder. “Jessica and Eric are much more… tame when it comes to parties. So Mike and I have to work together to do as much stupid shit as possible before they stop us.”
“That is wildly concerning.” Bella replied, furrowing her eyebrows. “What do you even do at parties? The ones in movies always seem so dramatic and fictitious.”
You groaned in excitement, sitting up. “Uhm, Bella. They are exactly like the movies, and completely not. If you’re drunk enough, it feels empowering and exciting- like the lights are there for you, and you’re the only one that matters. If you’re not drunk enough, it’s a bunch of sweaty teenagers dry humping each other in someone’s living room. It’s awkward and weird and fantastic. You should really come to Mallory’s graduation party. Big of a bitch as she is, she knows how to throw a damn good party. Last summer, her jungle juice was so strong, I ended up…”
Jacob and Sam had both sent you slight glares, and you cleared your throat uncomfortably.
“Maybe that’s a story for another time.” You spoke, your face heating up.
Emily laughed a little, shaking her head. “Didn’t realize you were such a socialite.”
You blushed at her words, feeling perhaps that the pack was carrying much more important things than high school drama and shitty house parties. “Sometimes.”
“Should you really be using your new found freedom to go to a party like that?” Paul asked, looking down on you with concern.
“It’s not my friends that my parents were worried about.” You shrugged, dismissing his words. “Plus, I only have so long before I’m heading off to the other end of the country. How likely am I to see everyone together like that?”
Paul hummed, frowning a bit. “Right, college.”
“Have you made your official decision yet?” Emily asked, her curiosity seeping through her tone. “I know you have one in mind as your top school.”
You shifted a bit, suddenly feeling anxious about your future for the first time in a while. “No… I haven’t made anything official yet. I’ve declined a few schools, but that’s about it. I’ve applied to a couple more in Washington, too.”
“Washington? I thought you just said you were heading to the East Coast?” Kim questioned, glancing between you and Paul.
“That was the plan, but things change, you know? Better to be prepared and have plans than for your life to come to a grinding halt.” You answered, brushing nonexistent sand off of your pants.
Paul tensed slightly, and when you looked at him questioningly, he smiled and kissed the top of your head. You melted into his touch, the euphoria of being around him almost overwhelming.
The afternoon sun was waning, and Emily suggested that the group should pack their things and head back. Paul pulled you aside, smiling coyly.
“Would you wanna come over? We can ditch everyone else and watch a movie at my place.” He suggested, brushing your hair behind your ear.
“Your parents won’t mind?”
He shook his head, his eyes darting from your lips to your eyes. “No one else is home.”
Your eyes widened at that, and you agreed quickly. Paul seemed visibly excited, and he announced that you two were heading off on your own, and he’d drop you home later that night. You said your goodbyes to the group, as he dragged you off the beach and towards the street.
You could barely keep up with Paul’s long strides, your short legs failing you. You laughed at his relentless pace, but didn’t say anything about it. His house was only a short walk away, and as soon as you had shut the door, the silence was heavy between you.
“Er, we can watch a movie down here if you’d like. Or I have a tv in my bedroom, as well.” He offered, gauging your reaction.
“Your bedroom would be great.” You answered, letting him lead you to the back of the one story home.
When you entered his room, you could see how absolutely fitting it was for him. The walls were mostly bare, and there wasn’t much furniture aside from his bed, a night stand, and the dresser that held the tv. You immediately took off your shoes and coat, dropping yourself onto the plush covers of his King sized bed.
Paul laughed at your movements, and turned the tv on. A movie was already loaded into the VHS player, and he rewound it, unconcerned about whatever title it was. When he reached the beginning, he pressed play, and joined you on the bed.
You noticed how he kept a bit of distance between you two, and you felt your chest heat up at the notion. It was obvious your comfort came first to him, regardless of what intentions he may have had for the evening.
You sat in silence as Pulp Fiction continued on, both of you unsure of what to do with yourselves. You weren’t completely certain if it was the feeling of being by his side again, or some deeper connection, but you couldn’t stop imaging his hands running down your body. Your thoughts were plagued with dirty images of what could happen while you were alone, and the realization that you could make them come true dawned on you.
Carefully, you turned over onto your stomach, moving closer to Paul so you were nestled into his side, with your faces only inches apart. He cocked an eyebrow at your movements, but you just smiled slightly at him instead. You glanced at his plush lips, and the sudden urge to have them against yours took over.
Like lightening striking, you kissed him deeply, pushing yourself upwards a bit to be closer to him. Paul didn’t question you, his hands instead sliding up to rest on your hips, squeezing them gently. Since you hadn’t kissed since his near phasing, you had forgotten how absolutely addicting he was. You wanted to drink him in, become absolutely intoxicated on nothing but his taste.
Your hands came to rest in his hair, and you pulled on the short locks gently, causing him to moan into your mouth. The sound stirred something inside you, and you yanked harder this time.
Paul groaned, and his hands grabbed your body, moving you so you were entirely pressed on top of him. You slid your legs open, so you could straddle his waist comfortably. He pulled away from your lips, bringing his mouth down your neck, and biting slightly.
“Fuck, Paul,” you moaned, tilting your head to give him better access.
He took the opportunity to bite down harder, before his warm tongue darted out to soothe the red skin. He trailed kisses down lower, finding your sweet spot just above your collarbone.
The room was unbearably warm, and you pushed him back so he was laying down fully again. You reached for the hem of your shirt, and tugged the garment off, tossing it behind you. His eyes widened at the look of your bare chest, your boobs spilling over the cups slightly. He sat himself up then, scooting you both back so he could lean against the headboard. His hands trailed to your back, unhooking your bra swiftly.
Paul’s eyes trailed over your bare form, and he licked his lips as a toothy grin broke out on his face. “You’re going to the the death of me.”
Quote
Addison Cain was living in Kyoto, volunteering at a shrine and studying indigenous Japanese religion. She was supposed to be working on a scholarly book about her research, but started writing intensely erotic Batman fan fiction instead. It happened almost by accident. It was 2012, and Ms. Cain — who grew up in Orange County, Calif., under a different name — was three years out of college, alone abroad with a lot of time on her hands. Her command of Japanese was halting, and English titles in bookstores were wildly expensive. So Ms. Cain started reading things she could find for free online, and soon discovered fanfic — stories by amateurs that borrow characters and plots from established pop-cultural franchises. Ms. Cain began devouring works set in the world of Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy. She decided to write some of her own, featuring Batman’s nemesis Bane as a sexy antihero, and posted them for free online. She quickly developed a fan base, becoming something of a star in her sub-subgenre. A few years later, she was living in Arlington, Va., and working as a bartender when she began to wonder if she could turn her hobby into a business. Her husband and parents discouraged her from pursuing something so impractical. Agents were equally dismissive, rejecting or ignoring Ms. Cain’s queries for more than a year. Then, a fellow writer helped Ms. Cain send a manuscript to Blushing Books, a small publishing house in Charlottesville. An editor read it overnight and sent her a contract the next day. In the spring of 2016, she published “Born to Be Bound,” an adaptation of her fanfic. The story takes place on a future earth where most of humanity has died from a plague and survivors live under a dome, divided into a wolfpack-like hierarchy of dominant Alphas, neutral Betas and submissive Omegas. A powerful, brutish Alpha named Shepherd takes an Omega woman named Claire captive, and they engage in rough, wolfish sex. Ms. Cain’s fans posted nearly 100 positive reviews on Amazon, enough to get her some visibility. “Unapologetically raw and deliciously filthy,” read one glowing blurb. The debut was a hit. She rushed out several more titles, and the series grossed some $370,000, according to her publisher. For the next two years, Ms. Cain published at breakneck speed, producing a novel every few months by repurposing her older fan fiction, keeping her books in the algorithmic sweet spot of Amazon’s new releases and turning herself into a recognizable brand. “Dip your toes into the erotica pool,” she said on a 2016 sci-fi and fantasy podcast. “There’s nothing to do here but make money.” Then, in 2018, Ms. Cain heard about an up-and-coming fantasy writer with the pen name Zoey Ellis, who had published an erotic fantasy series with a premise that sounded awfully familiar. It featured an Alpha and Omega couple, and lots of lupine sex. The more Ms. Cain learned about “Myth of Omega” and its first installment, “Crave to Conquer,” the more outraged she became. In both books, Alpha men are overpowered by the scent of Omega heroines and take them hostage. In both books, the women try and fail to suppress their pheromones and give in to the urge to mate. In both books, the couples sniff, purr and growl; nest in den-like enclosures; neck-bite to leave “claim” marks; and experience something called “knotting,” involving a peculiar feature of the wolf phallus. Ms. Cain urged Blushing Books to do something. The publisher sent copyright violation notices to more than half a dozen online retailers, alleging that Ms. Ellis’s story was “a copy” with scenes that were “almost identical to Addison Cain’s book.” Most of the outlets, including Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and Apple, removed Ms. Ellis’s work immediately. Ms. Cain’s readers flocked to her defense. “This is a rip off of Addison Cain,” one irate reader wrote on Goodreads. “So disappointed in this author and I hope Mrs. Cain seeks legal charges against you for stealing her work! Shame on you!” It’s hard to imagine that two writers could independently create such bizarrely specific fantasy scenarios. As it turns out, neither of them did. Both writers built their plots with common elements from a booming, fan-generated body of literature called the Omegaverse. The dispute between Ms. Cain and Ms. Ellis is a kink-laden microcosm of tactics at play throughout the fanfic industry. As the genre commercializes, authors aggressively defend their livelihoods, sometimes using a 1998 law, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, to get online retailers to remove competitors’ books. When making a claim, a creator must have a “good faith belief” that her ownership of the work in question has been infringed. But what does that mean when the ultimate source material is a crowdsourced collective? The question has members of the Omegaverse community choosing sides between Ms. Cain and Ms. Ellis — as will a federal judge in Virginia, who is considering whether the allegations, and the consequences, merit a payout of more than a million dollars. Welcome to the Omegaverse, where men can get pregnant To untangle the Omegaverse fight, it helps to understand its origins in a parallel literary universe — the vast, unruly, diverse, exuberant and often pornographic world of fan fiction. After getting its start decades ago in “Star Trek” zines, fanfic mushroomed when the internet made it easy for especially dedicated consumers of pop culture to find and create stories for one another. There are now subgenres upon subgenres, from “slash” (where two male characters pair up romantically, such as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson), to odder fare like “mundane AU” (an alternative universe where magical characters live in the real world — e.g., Harry Potter goes to a regular boarding school and has normal teen problems). While some traditional authors have derided fan fiction writers as creative parasites, there isn’t really any way to stop them. Such works are legal as long as writers post them for free and don’t try to sell stories based on copyrighted material. But too much money was at stake for the genre to remain amateur forever. E L James’s blockbuster series “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which sold more than 150 million copies, started as fanfic based on Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” vampire saga. By swapping out copyrighted characters for nominally original ones — a practice known as “filing off the serial numbers” — fanfic writers like Ms. James, Christina Lauren and the cheekily named Tara Sue Me have leapfrogged into for-profit publishing. As more fan fiction writers cross over into commercial publishing, turf wars have erupted. “Fan fiction made authors and publishers realize there was a thriving market for this stuff,” said Rebecca Tushnet, a copyright expert at Harvard Law School. “There’s much more of it, so there’s more opportunity for conflict.” The specific fanfic universe that spawned the Cain-Ellis dispute emerged about a decade ago, when devotees of the CW drama “Supernatural” began writing stories in which its two lead actors are lovers. One would be the dominant alpha male. The other man would be a feminized omega, often with the ability to become impregnated — a trope known as MPreg. Canine, and then lupine, sex stuff got mixed in. The premise was wildly popular, and tropes were rapidly adopted by writers in other fandoms, including NBC’s “Hannibal” and MTV’s “Teen Wolf.” The sprawling body of work that followed came to be known as the Omegaverse, with its own rules, plot elements and terminology. Some Omegaverse stories involve lycanthropes (werewolves), vampires, shape-shifters, dragons, space pirates, others feature regular humans. But virtually all Omegaverse couples engage in wolflike behavior. Alphas “rut” and Omegas go through heat cycles, releasing pheromones that drive Alphas into a lusty frenzy. One particular physiological quirk that’s ubiquitous in Omegaverse stories, called knotting, comes from a real feature of wolves’ penises, which swell during intercourse, causing the mating pair to remain physically bound to increase the chance of insemination. The appetite for such tales is large and growing. In the past decade, more than 70,000 stories set in the Omegaverse have been published on the fan fiction site Archive of Our Own. As it became more popular, the Omegaverse transcended individual fandoms and became an established genre on its own. Writers began publishing Omegaverse stories with original characters and settings, and authors started to publish them for profit. On Amazon, there are hundreds of novels for sale, including titles like “Pregnant Rock Star Omega,” “Wolf Spirit: A Reverse Harem Omegaverse Romance” and “Some Bunny to Love: An M/M MPreg Shifter Romance,” an improbable tale involving an Alpha male who can transform into a rabbit. This was the thriving commercial backdrop to Ms. Cain’s allegation that Ms. Ellis stole her material. Ms. Ellis thought that the claim was absurd — and was prepared to say so in court. The ‘cat mama’ strikes back One day last spring, Ms. Ellis met me for coffee at a hotel near Paddington Station. She doesn’t seem like someone who writes dark, edgy, sometimes violent erotica. She’s young, cheerful, and works in education in London, which is one of the reasons she declines to publish under her real name. Most days, she gets up at four in the morning to write, then heads to the school where she works. On her Amazon author page, she describes herself as a “cat mama” who loves “sexual tension that jumps off the page.” Ms. Ellis said she got into fan fiction in 2006. She read stories set in the Harry Potter universe at first, then moved on to other fandoms, including one for the BBC’s “Sherlock,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, that introduced her to the Omegaverse. The genre was unlike anything else she’d encountered. She began dabbling in her own original writing, and in late 2017 began working on the “Myth of Omega” series. Set in a medieval fantasy world, the first novel, “Crave to Conquer,” features an Alpha emperor who becomes obsessed with a beguiling undercover Omega spy named Cailyn. She resists his advances, using magic to mask the scent of her pheromones, until she is overcome by the biological imperative. To appeal to other Omegaverse and dark romance fans, Ms. Ellis built the narrative around standard genre elements — the wolflike tics and mating, and an edgy dominant-submissive dynamic. (In fanfic terminology, some of the sexual scenarios would be labeled “dub-con,” or “dubious consent.”) “You have to make sure you use the tropes of Omegaverse in order to be recognized by fans of the genre,” Ms. Ellis said. “Crave to Conquer” and its sequel, “Crave to Capture,” were published in early 2018 by Quill Ink Books, a London company she founded. Readers gave the series glowing reviews on Goodreads and Amazon, calling it “sensational new Omegaverse!” and the “best Omega yet.” In late April 2018, Ms. Ellis got an email from a reader who had ordered one of her books from Barnes & Noble, then learned that it wasn’t available anymore. She soon discovered that all of her Omegaverse books had disappeared from major stores, all because of a claim of copyright infringement from Ms. Cain and her publisher. Ms. Ellis found it bewildering. “I couldn’t see how a story I had written using recognized tropes from a shared universe, to tell a story that was quite different than anything else out there commercially, could be targeted in that way,” Ms. Ellis said. “There are moments and scenarios that seem almost identical, but it’s a trope that can be found in hundreds of stories.” A lawyer for Ms. Ellis and Quill filed counter-notices to websites that had removed her books. Some took weeks to restore the titles; others took months. There was no way to recover the lost sales. “As a new author, I was building momentum, and that momentum was lost,” Ms. Ellis said. And she worried that the “plagiarist” label would permanently mar her reputation. Ms. Ellis decided to sue. “Everything would have been in question, my integrity would have been questioned, my ability to write and tell stories — all of that would have been under threat if I didn’t challenge these claims,” she said. In the fall of 2018, Quill Ink filed against Blushing Books and Ms. Cain in federal court in Oklahoma, where Ms. Ellis’s digital distributor is based, seeking $1.25 million in damages for defamation, interfering with Ms. Ellis’s career, and for filing false copyright infringement notices. In the suit, Quill’s lawyers argued that “no one owns the ‘omegaverse’ or the various tropes that define ‘omegaverse.’” Ms. Ellis’s lawyers thought they had a strong position. But they struggled to find a prior case that addressed whether fan fiction tropes could be protected by copyright. “We were looking at cases to see if the courts had ever dealt with anything like this before, dealing with the emergence of this new literary genre,” said Gideon Lincecum, a lawyer who represents Quill Ink and Ms. Ellis. “We found there weren’t any.” ‘Maliciously’ weaponizing the D.M.C.A. The intense rivalry isn’t limited to writers in the Omegaverse. As online publishing has gotten more competitive — there are millions of e-books available on Amazon, up from 600,000 in 2014 — some genre authors have grown aggressive in their efforts to dominate their literary niche. Last year, an author who writes in a popular romance subgenre called “Reverse Harem High School Bully Romance” — a trope in which a teenage female character has several aggressive male suitors — claimed that another author had copied her books, and demanded that she remove them. The accused author briefly removed her work from Amazon, but restored them after consulting a lawyer. Other authors have tried to use trademarks to go after their rivals. Writers have attempted to trademark generic phrases like “dragon slayer” and even the word “dark.” In 2018, the self-published romance author Faleena Hopkins caused a scandal after she registered a trademark for the word “cocky,” and sent infringement notices to other romance authors who used the word in their titles. Amazon temporarily removed some books, including “Her Cocky Firefighters” and “Her Cocky Doctors.” After suing several people unsuccessfully, Ms. Hopkins backed down. Like Cockygate, the Omegaverse case reveals how easily intellectual property law can be weaponized by authors seeking to take down their rivals. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, individuals or companies can send takedown notices to retailers as long as they have a good faith belief that their work has been infringed. Retailers are protected from being named in related litigation if they remove the material, and many websites comply with D.M.C.A. notices without even investigating the claims. Legal experts say the system is easily abused. “We’ve seen lots of examples of people sending D.M.C.A. notices when it’s pretty obvious that they didn’t think there was copyright infringement,” said Mitch Stoltz, a senior staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit digital rights group. “There’s not much accountability.” On May 21, the U.S. Copyright Office released a report detailing how the 22-year-old D.M.C.A. has failed to keep pace with the anarchic digital ecosystem, as online platforms have been overwhelmed by a crushing volume of takedown notices. Between 1998 and 2010, Google received fewer than three million such notices; in 2017, the company got more than 880 million — an increase of more than 29,000 percent, according to the report. Many requests are legitimate, but the report notes that other motives include “anti-competitive purposes, to harass a platform or consumer, or to try and chill speech that the rightsholder does not like.” Amazon agrees that it’s a problem. As the rise of self-publishing has produced a flood of digital content, authors frequently use copyright notices to squash their competition. During a public hearing hosted by the U.S. Copyright Office in 2016, Stephen Worth, Amazon’s associate general counsel, said that fraudulent copyright complaints by authors accounted for “more than half of the takedown notices” the company receives. “We need to fix the problem of notices that are used improperly to attack others’ works maliciously,” he said. In the Omegaverse case, Ms. Cain’s claim of copyright infringement against Ms. Ellis has struck some as especially tenuous. “They are not very original, either one of them,” said Kristina Busse, the author of “Framing Fan Fiction,” who has written academic essays about the Omegaverse and submitted expert witness testimony for the case on Ms. Ellis’s behalf. “They both stole from fandom or existing tropes in the wild.” Intellectual property experts say copyright protection applies to the expression of ideas through particular phrasing, but doesn’t cover literary tropes and standard plot points. The writer of a crime novel, for example, can’t copyright the notion of a body discovered in the first act and the killer getting caught in the end. But the Omegaverse case is likely the first time these legal arguments have been invoked in a dispute over works that grew out of a corpus of fan fiction generated informally by thousands of writers. “In fan fiction, the sharing of tropes and story parts and plot lines is free flowing,” said Anne Jamison, a fanfic expert and associate professor of English at the University of Utah, who was skeptical of the notion that Omegaverse tropes could be copyrighted. “There’s a blurry line between what is specifically yours and what is somebody else’s.” ‘I don’t want her to make any more money’ Ms. Ellis wasn’t the first Omegaverse figure Ms. Cain accused of plagiarism. In March 2016, she wrote a Facebook post charging that another author, who wrote under the name the Dragon’s Maiden, had copied at least 15 plot points from her novel “Born to Be Bred.” In a message to Ms. Cain, which Ms. Cain posted on Facebook, the Dragon’s Maiden denied she had stolen anything, and argued that “there are some similarities, but I honestly believe that they don’t go beyond common Lycan traits or actual wolf behavior.” But after being called a plagiarist in online comments, the Dragon’s Maiden, who lives in Wisconsin, removed her story from the internet. “Her fans came after me, even though our stories, other than being Omegaverse, were nothing alike,” she said in an interview. Two years later, Ms. Cain and her publisher filed D.M.C.A. takedown requests against Ms. Ellis’s first two “Myth of Omega” books. Ms. Cain also asked her publisher to file an infringement notice against an Ellis novel that hadn’t even been released yet. “Book three needs to come down too. I don’t want her to make any more money off this series,” Ms. Cain wrote to Blushing Books in April, according to a court filing. She also wanted to stop Ms. Ellis from publishing a new spinoff series of Omegaverse books, and emailed her publisher, asking what they could do. Bethany Burke, the publisher of Blushing Books, was skeptical: “The problem is — as you say — you do not own Omegaverse,” she wrote. “I don’t know what mechanism we can use to shut her down completely as an author, unless YOU want to try to trademark Omegaverse. (Which we might be able to get.)” That message, produced in discovery, probably won’t help Ms. Cain’s chances in court. She has not always been her own best advocate. In a deposition last year, Ms. Cain said that the overlap between her books and Ms. Ellis’s series went beyond the Omegaverse elements. “It has nothing to do with trope, it has nothing to do with Omegaverse, it has to do with plot similarities,” she said. But when she was asked to cite specific examples, she said she couldn’t recall any, adding that she hadn’t done a close comparison because it was too upsetting. “It was hard for me to read them side by side, honestly, because I felt very violated,” she said. Still, Ms. Cain is fighting the lawsuit. “The theft of my work was devastating,” she wrote in a Facebook message to her followers last spring. “Unfortunately, I am now facing retaliation for doing what I am legally allowed to do, which is to try and prevent unauthorized uses of my works.” More than 70 fans left encouraging notes, punctuated by heart emojis and angry cat .gifs. “It is infuriating that she can drag you through this when she is the one who stole your work,” one wrote. Ms. Cain, who now lives in Virginia with her husband and 2-year-old daughter, said through her lawyer over email that she disagrees with the claims brought against her, but declined to discuss specific allegations, citing ongoing litigation. The biggest development in the case so far is that Blushing Books has left Ms. Cain to contest the matter alone. Last year, the publisher conceded that no plagiarism or copyright infringement had occurred, and a judgment was entered against the company, which paid undisclosed monetary damages to Quill and Ms. Ellis. (Ms. Cain is now self-publishing.) Ms. Ellis and her publishing company filed a new civil suit against Ms. Cain in her home state of Virginia, arguing that she maliciously directed her publisher to send false copyright infringement notices to retailers. Ms. Cain’s lawyers have denied the claims, and have lined up authors, bloggers and readers as witnesses. If the judge, or a jury, finds Ms. Cain in the wrong, the case would send a message to overzealous genre writers that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is not to be abused. By the same token, authors of genuinely original stories might find they have one fewer legal lever to protect their work. And a victory by Ms. Cain could encourage a free-for-all, emboldening authors to knock back competitors and formally assert their ownership of swaths of the fan fiction universe and common tropes in genre fiction. Discovery is ongoing, and a pretrial conference before a judge is scheduled for June. In the meantime, the Omegaverse continues to thrive. This year, more than 200 new books from the genre have been published on Amazon. The latest batch draws on virtually every genre and trope imaginable: paranormal shifter romances, paranormal Mpreg romances, reverse harem romances, sci-fi alien warrior romances. There are fantastical Alpha-Omega stories featuring witches, unicorns, dragons, vampires, wolf-shifters, bear-shifters, and wolf-shifters versus bear-shifters. There are comparatively pedestrian Omegaverse romances about celebrity chefs, dentists, frat boys, bakers, bodyguards and billionaires. In a teeming multiverse of stories, the tropes are still evolving, inexhaustible. Kitty Bennett and Susan Beachy contributed research. summary: After the reader survives an encounter with a vampire, they are still haunted by the memories of it. Luckily, they have a caring and protective friend who is always ready to ensure they feel safe and cared for, even in the middle of the night.
Wrong place, wrong time.
You squeeze your eyes shut, hoping to erase the terrible images invading your brain. For a week now, they have been omnipresent, taking up all the space in your mind. They are the center and focal point of your thoughts for days on end. As you open them again, your vision adjusts to the darkness just enough for your gaze to fall on a strange form crouched in the corner of your bedroom. You could swear it’s alive. Swear it’s stalking you.
You jump out of your bed to turn your nightlamp on. Your heart feels like it might spring out of your chest of its own accord. Your breath is short, and for a moment, you think you’ll never be able to take one that will actually get air in your system.
The menacing form in the corner turned out to be a pile of dirty clothes, but you knew that. Since that day, you feel irrational and paranoid. Everything feels like a threat, and you are now constantly looking over your shoulder, paying close attention to any suspicious sound or absence of it. You’ve talked about it with Harry Clearwater when you unexpectedly met at the Reservation one day. You did not hear him coming, and he had set his heavy hand on your shoulder to get your attention. Which resulted in a glass shattering scream for you and a bad fright for the poor man. As he invited you in for a calming cup of tea, you unloaded the weight on your shoulder to him. It felt good to talk about it, knowing you could never do so with your dad and your friends. He assured you that it unfortunately was a very normal reaction from your nervous system. You had faced the world's most dangerous predator and had survived it without a single scratch. Of course it would take some time for your traumatized brain to go back to normal. You could never take credit for the fact that you even had a chance to go back to normal, and would never attempt to do so. Knowing very well that without Paul, Jared, and Embry’s arrival, you would not have lived to talk about this encounter.
When you focus and let your mind drift off, you can live the event again, as if you were back in time. The paralyzing fear, the blood in your veins feeling like icy water. There was nothing to be done against a creature like that. You remember the horror you felt as everything became silent around you. You were headed to Emily's cabin, a simple, straightforward walk through the woods. The birds suddenly stopped singing, even the soft wind had died down. The forest knew it was in the presence of something truly horrible and had seemed to hold its breath, along with every creature. The color of its eyes was like in every legend you had been told; crimson red, like fresh blood. Not one ounce of humanity in those orbs, just a bottomless pit of cruelty and hunger. The worst thing was the pull you remember feeling for a split second toward that monster. You knew it was its sole purpose, but felt embarrassed you had fallen for it. Shivers crawled down your spine as you recalled its ethereal and hypnotizing appearance. It’s like you can hear again the faint swooshing sound it made as it sprang towards you. You remember sending out a quick prayer to literally any entity who would be listening right now, but the blow never came. Next thing you knew, three giant beasts tackled it to the ground, gnarling and dismembering it in a matter of seconds.
You open your eyes and shake your head to try and physically get those horrible memories outside of your skull. You lay back in bed, anxiously watching every corner of your room for some sign of danger. You left the light open, you knew there was no chance you could fall asleep without it. You tucked yourself back in bed and tried to calm your breathing. You tried every technique you knew, hoping sleep would grace you with its embrace, but nothing worked.
You look back at the clock after a while. 1:15 am. It was too late for you to get out of bed, and morning was still so far away. You had school the next day and knew that if you spent one more night without sleeping, you wouldn’t be able to explain to your teachers why you dozed off again in their class without them calling your father.
In a last effort, you tried thinking about reassuring and comforting things. Curiously enough, one kept coming back to mind. A giant wolf, its fur a multitude of shades of brown and red. Its eyes were sweet and reassuring, containing a particular warmth. You looked at your phone, hesitating, but remembered his voice: “If there’s absolutely anything, call me okay?”
And so you did.
Twenty minutes later, you got a text. You quietly walked to your window, glad to see Jacob’s familiar shape outside your house. He was standing next to a tree, representing for once a friendly and reassuring shadow in the night.
He spoke quietly. “Having trouble sleeping?”
You nodded, a bit ashamed to admit such an infantile fear. Although, deep inside, you knew there was nothing childish about being afraid of the monster you had been warned about as a child, once you had come face to face with it.
“Are you sure you want to do this? I'd totally understand if you'd rather not stay. I mean it's late and you need to sleep. I don't know what I was thinking…”
“Don't be ridiculous." he cut you off. "I’m already here. And once you’ve been asleep for a long time, I’ll go home and catch up on my beauty sleep, okay?”
You knew it wouldn’t take much convincing from him, there was no point in lying. You needed him. You needed the reassurance and sense of security he always brought you.
"If you're sure then… but Jake. You won't leave too soon uh?"
You heard his low chuckle in the distance.
“I promise.”
You slowly and quietly closed your window. The last thing you would want is for your father to wake up and see Jacob standing below your window. You looked back outside, only to see a giant russet wolf had replaced your tall friend. He was standing under the covers of the woods. Forks was a tranquil little city, but you could never be too careful. He gave you a quick nod, encouraging you to go back to bed. You sent him a little thumbs up before heading to your fort of blankets and pillows.
As stupid as it might have seemed, you did feel a thousand times better knowing that Jacob was right outside, watching over you like a guardian angel. To your surprise, sleep quickly came to you, and you fell into its black hole without any resistance.
//
You’re in a dark forest, running and running and running. You can’t breathe, your hands are bloody, everything hurts. All you can hear is an echoing, cold, cruel laugh. You trip over a root and fall. Something is rushing through the dark woods, coming at you. You get back up and run in the opposite direction, but it feels like you’re not getting any further, like you're running in place. You scream for help, calling out for Jacob, Paul, Embry, Jared, ANYONE, HELP ME. But no one answers, you’re alone, and you’re about to die a horrible death. You trip once more, your leg hurts like hell, there’s no point trying to get up again. You turn around to try and decipher who, what, is running after you. Suddenly, in the dark void of the night, all you can see is that horrifying pair of bloodthirsty eyes. You let out one last scream as it sinks its teeth into your skin. //
“Y/n, y/n, wake up! It’s okay I’m here, Y/n!”
You try to run out of bed but feel a strong pair of arms holding you back. The embrace is warm and smells familiar, but you’re not controlling your limbs anymore. Your whole body is in flight mode. Luckily, the thing (person?) holding you back is strong enough to withstand it, and even though you try as hard as you can to run away, your feet aren't even touching the ground anymore.
“Y/nn, Y/n, shhh. It’s okay, I’m here, it’s me. It’s Jacob.”
You focus on the reassuring tone of the voice and try to convince yourself you're not in the woods anymore. You can see your surroundings poorly illuminated by your little mushroom night light. You're in your room, you’re safe, you’re okay.
Your breathing is still fast and shallow. You blink a few times. Sometimes, the vision surrounding you is one of the cold woods. On other, it's the familiar vision of your room. You slowly turn to face your friend’s face. His brows are furrowed, and his traits have worry written on them in bold letters. He scans you, not quite letting go of your body. Too scared you might start screaming and running again.
“Jake?” “Yes, hi. Welcome back. You really scared me there Y/n.” “What- what are you doing in here? What happened?” Your tone is feeble, and you feel exhausted. You look around once more, afraid this might be some other kind of twisted and terrifying nightmare.
“Am I still dreaming?” You dare to ask. “No, you are awake. We’re in your room. You asked me to come to keep an eye on you, remember?”
You nod, still unsure. What if this was a dream inside a dream? What if the warm limbs of your friend suddenly turned ice cold? What if you looked at him and his eyes turned red, fangs slightly poking his lips?
He can see doubt dancing in your eyes. You don't trust him, or yourself. He holds up his palms towards you, trusting you won't bolt and run.
“See for yourself. I’m real, you can touch me.”
You reach a hesitating finger, carefully poking his own. Seems real enough, feels real. It's warm, the skin is wonderfully tanned, familiar. You’ve seen those hands at work a thousand times. You know them by heart. You poke his cheek, and he gives you a tender smile.
“Convinced?”
You nod once more, letting out a sigh you didn’t know you were holding, as your legs start to shake. That's the thing about dreams, isn’t it? Even if it’s only happening inside your head, your body reacts to it as if it were actually living it. You look at your hands, feeling reminiscent of the pain as if you did scorch them in the woods.
He interrupts your thoughts with a low and soft voice. “Come back in bed. I’ll tuck you in.”
He wraps your hands with his huge ones. They’re warm and feel incredibly good. You let him guide you back to your toasty blankets, but instead of leaving, he takes a spot next to you, shielding you from the window.
“What are you doing?” You ask with a timid voice. “I’m keeping an eye on you, dummy.” Your feet are poking from under the covers. You move to offer him a bit of coverage, but he declines. He is already hot enough as he is, although he can’t deny that his heart seemed to grow a size or two at the kind gesture.
You wait a minute before asking how he ended up in your room. You're not sure you want to know, but curiosity wins over embarrassment.
His expression darkens for a second before he starts talking. “I was just keeping guard outside when I heard a noise. You were calling for me… I didn’t even think, I just got in. You were twitching in your bed. I tried to calm you down, I didn't want it to wake up Charlie, but nothing would do. I was about to forcefully wake you, but you ran out of bed and woke up by yourself.”
“Oh.” You finally let after a few seconds of silence.
“Yup.”
Unconsciously, you're not sure, he took ahold of your hand and lightly played with your fingers. He finally lifted his gaze from your joined hands to look at you, all caring and reassuring. You slide in closer to him. All you want is to feel his comforting warmth and maybe offer him as much as you can too. You feel so bad for worrying him so much. He opens up his arms and cradles you in a bear hug. He won't say it out loud, but he's also in dire need of comfort.
You match your breathing to him, and for the first time in a little while, you’re not scared, not even a little bit. If only you could stay like this forever.
After a few minutes of silence, in which you almost fell asleep, you hear him whisper.
“I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I should have been there. I should have protected you. I’m so sorry, you don't even know.”
“It’s not your fault Jake.” You mumble, and realize you're telling the truth. These are more than empty words. Never has it crossed your mind that this might have been his fault.
“It partially is, if I didn’t drag you into all this you might have been far away. Safe, away from monsters most people don't even know exist."
“I chose to follow you into this Jake. I would be lying if I said this wasn't one of the most horrifying experiences of my life, but it was not your fault. Please get that idea out of your head, okay? I’ll get over it. I guess I just need some time, as Harry said.”
You feel almost fully awake again. He nods, but you know you haven't convinced him. The look on his face is one of guilt, one you've come to know more and more since you learned about his secret. He mindlessly played with a feather poking out of your duvet, avoiding your gaze. Once again, you realized how mature he looked, while still being so young. Too young to carry such heavy burdens. You wanted to hammer the idea out of his thick skull, but you knew there was nothing to do about it tonight. Jacob felt responsible for what happened to you, and convincing him of the opposite would take some time.
Your eyes focused on his tanned skin, and you suddenly became hyper-aware that he was in your bed while only wearing his jeans short.
You inched away of him. “Uhm, want a shirt? I’m sorry, I didn't even think that, since you were in your wolf form, you uh… wouldn’t have one?” You let out an awkward laugh. You were used to seeing him like this, but it was different when you were both lying in bed together in a space that felt so intimate.
“That's nice of you Y/n, but I don't think I'd actually fit into one of your shirts.” He snickers as you get up. You're still wrapped in a blanket as you forage in the pile of clothes next to your bed. You get out of it with a dark cotton t-shirt in hand. It's humongous for you, but you know it will fit Jake like a glove. Probably because it is one of his own.
“There, dummy.” You hand him the t-shirt before jumping back in bed to wrap yourself properly, like a human burrito.
He looks at the piece of clothing and then at you for a good 10 seconds. “You still have this?”
He genuinely looks surprised, but his expression seems mixed with a hint of… satisfaction?
You nod, your nose and eyes being the only part of your anatomy still out of the blankets. You still remember the day he lent you that shirt when you had been caught in the rain at La Push. You never returned it to him, loving the way the gigantic piece of clothing felt on you.
He didn't add anything else before putting the shirt on. “It smells a lot like you.” He adds, a slight tremor in his voice.
“That might be because I wear it a lot to sleep.” You shamefully admit. Your words are nothing more than a whisper, but you know he didn’t have any trouble hearing them. You pull the covers even higher, trying to hide the blush creeping on your cheeks.
“Is that so?” He's smugly smirking. No doubt anymore that he is satisfied with that new piece of information, which makes you want to crawl even further under the covers.
You mutter a quick 'dumbass' before turning away from him. He chuckled before grabbing and pulling you on his broad chest like you weighted nothing more than a feather. You and Jake have always been comfortable with physical touch, but you feel like this is special. You have never done this before. Fine the circumstances were a bit peculiar, but that did not keep you from relishing in the warmth he diffused in waves. You didn't even bother to fake protest. This, is all you need, and you will not be foolish enough to ruin the moment. He wiggles even closer, and you can feel his chest come flush with your back through the layers of blankets. He rests his chin on the crown of your head before lightly stroking the side of his full cheek on your hair.
“Little human burrito.” He mutters. His voice is barely a whisper. Its husky tone makes you shiver. “I’ll watch over you, now go back to sleep.”
pov: you find out about your boyfriend, seth and his friends being able to shift into wolves
"You don't have to do this if you don't want to, you know?" Seth asked for the milionth time.
"I do want to meet your friends, seth, I know how important they are to you" I reassured him with a smile.
We were now walking through the reservation, heading towards emily and sam uley's house, where seth's friends often hung out. We had been talking about this for a while and I figured that I would have met them sometime anyway, since Seth and I had been dating for a few months.
As soon as we reached the house, a few dark haired, shirtless and tan boys ran out, their faces radiating with excitment.
"So you're the lucky girl, huh?" one of them looked me up and down.
"Seth seems to be luckier, Jared. I'm Paul Lahote" another smirked as he held out his hand.
I took it nervously and said: "Y/N Y/L/N"
They each then shook my hand and greeted me.
"Embry Call. Nice to finally meet you, Y/N."
"Seth talks about you all the time, trust me. I'm Quil"
Seth lightly punched his shoulder and the boys laughed.
And so on. After introducing themselves, they sprinted back into the house as someone called for them. Seth and I stayed behind and he softly squeezed my hand, before saying:
"Seems to be going good"
"They all seem like great friends" I smiled at him.
"They are" he smiled back. "But if you ever bring this up, I'll deny it"
We both laughed and he turned to me as we reached the doorway and placed a soft kiss on my lips.
The boys sat at the table made puking sounds and jokingly covered their eyes with their hands.
Seth and I laughed it off, right before a woman scolded them.
I hadn't even noticed her; after she turned around, she came up to us and hugged me, then introduced herself as Emily Young.
"You're Sam's wife, ri-"
"His imprint" Paul cut me off.
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion as the boys all snapped at him, Jared's elbow hitting Paul's side, perhaps a bit harder than he meant.
In response to Jared, Paul got up, his chair falling to the ground, and pushed Jared a few meters back. They were yelling at each other as the other boys were quick to drag them out of the house, both of their bodies shaking violently.
"Stay here with Emily" Seth whispered, then ran towards them.
She and I got out on the porch, incapable of interfering.
Jacob was holding Paul back by his arm, while Quil and Jared were trying to calm Jared down, the other boys standing in between them.
"Cool off guys, Sam's about to get here" Emily shouted.
It was no use; swiftly, Paul freed himswlf from Jacob's grip and shockingly enough, his body contorsioned into the one of a huge, ash-gray wolf. Jared was quick to jump back at him, only he had transformed as well. Paul sank his teeth somewhere around the other guy's shoulder, who howled in pain before striking back.
When I was finally able to look away from the fight, my eyes searched for my boyfriend, with fear. He was nowhere to be seen; instead, in the place he last stood was now a wolf, who was a bit shorter than the rest, eyes looking into mine.
"Seth" I whispered.
I was frightened; not really of the huge wolves, though, but rather for Seth, praying he wouldn't get hurt.
I was pulled out of my train of thought by the shouting of another man, who was fastly approaching them. His head turned to me for a moment, before his clothes all fell onto the ground, shredded, as the greatest of wolves stood next to the fighting boys. He was visibly taller with black fur, his chest pressing forward as he held his head high; "must be their leader" I thought to myself.
Suddenly, the wolves all backed up, Paul and Jared's bowing in front of Sam. After a few moments in which all looked the great wolf in the eyes, they scattered running into the forest, nowhere to be seen.
Emily grabbed my arm softly and urged me inside.
"Come on, they'll be here soon"
"Are they going to be okay?" I asked quickly, much worried for them all, tears forming in my eyes.
She looked at me and sighed, stroking my hair.
"Yes, they'll be okay, sweetheart. This happens pretty much on a daily basis around here"
I gulped, with shock.
"So this... this huge wolf thing is common around here?"
She laughed and nodded.
"They'll explain everything to you when they get here"
As soon as she said that, the tan boys came back into the house, all laughing and joking around, Paul and Jared included. All except for Seth and Sam, who stayed behind, talking in a very serious demeanor. As they reached the house, Seth stopped into the doorway while Sam came uo to Emily and kissed her tenderly. Then, he turned to me and said:
"Seth wishes to talk to you, kid."
I nervously walked outside, meeting his anxious gaze.
We sat in silence for a few moments before I bursted out loud:
"Oh Seth, are you all alright?"
I checked his arms and chest and back, searching for any sign of harm, yet he was spotless.
"Yeah, I'm fine" he laughed, still tense.
I exhaled, relieved and hugged him tight.
"Are... are you not absolutely terrified by me? Do you not want to never talk to me again?"
I giggled against his warm shoulder.
"No, of course I'm not scared of you. I mean, was I completely taken aback when all you guys turned into huge wolves? Yeah, sure. But scared of you? No, never." I shook my head as I voiced the last words.
"I love you" he said, finally relaxed.
"I love you too"
