I feel like we need to focus more on just how crazy this line actually is.

How did it work, Donna? Are we talking the early stages of polyamory? Are we talking about an acceptance of always standing aside for Laura because that was the established dynamic? The safety of being allowed to pine from a distance without the weight of having to make an actual romantic relationship work? Or the safety of having a male to transfer all feelings of longing onto? One who happened to be directly connected to the very dead someone you're yelling at in the middle of the night?

A major issue I had with the show my first go-around was my confusion on just what I was meant to think about James/Donna. A frequent sense of "are they for real or just grieving?" It's only now I'm starting to see the writing was much more explicit in presenting their relationship as one of emotional transference and a desperate need to cling to some sense of prior dynamics than I'd noticed.

a core memory of mine is that when i was around 10, i got a really, REALLY bad fever. i didn't do anything except laying in bed watching tv, and i was also kind of delirious. my parents left me with my grandma, which was a BAD idea because she gave me unsupervised access to all their videocassettes. for two days straight, i watched all the (at the time available) two seasons of this tv show that permanently changed me as a person. it started off as a standard crime series: a young girl was murdered, a quirky detective gets on the case, starts to uncover the secrets of the town, blah blah blah. but then the quirky detective starts to have these weird ass dreams in this unsettling room and starts to see the dead girl and these weird men, and then apparently the dead girl was being haunted by a demon but the demon was actually her father but he was possessed?? i was obsessed with it. it was, to my 10 year old mind, so absurd that when i got better i thought it was all an hallucination of my fever ridden mind.

i think that was the most fitting introcution i could have had to twin peaks: confusing and unsettling and i loved it
