TeeBox Chatter - "We Are Family" (PGA TOUR Canada)
TeeBox Chatter – “We Are Family” (PGA TOUR Canada)
In what will be a series of three podcast episodes that focus on PGA TOUR Canada. My co-host “Douger” and I reflect on the recent Fortinet Cup Championship. The Fortinet Cup Championship is essentially the TOUR Championship for PGA TOUR Canada. The road to the PGA TOUR does in fact start here. In this episode we chat about the site venue – Deer Ridge Golf Club – and how the tournament committee…

USGA gets creative with their groupings at Shinnecock Hills
Tumblr media
The USGA always has some fun putting their groups together for the national championship.
The U.S. Open is often a logistical marvel. The national championship has the largest field in golf playing the “toughest test in golf” and often has to dodge spotty mid-June weather. It can become a nightmare to get 156 players through 36 holes by Friday night. This week at Shinnecock Hills, however, it appears the USGA is in for smooth sailing.
The weather forecast is near perfect for all four tournament days. There’s a slight 10 percent chance of rain but that’s as significant as it gets. With the usual advantage of working with some of the longest days of the year, we should stay on schedule barring no course setup or wind catastrophes.
The field size still requires that they send them off split tees and in groups of three for the first two days. This is not the Masters, where a 10th tee start is anathema and they’d sooner cancel the entire tournament than have the field going off two tees. The 156-man field at the U.S. Open matches the size of the The Open and PGA Championship and at this point, they have figured out how to meet the logistical challenge of such a size playing five-hour rounds. Given the difficulty of this major, and potential for wind, rounds could push six hours but even with such an egregious pace of play, the benign weather forecast should provide some cushion at this 118th edition.
The USGA always gets a little cheeky with their tee times for the first two rounds. They put threesomes together with some obvious and maybe more subtle themes. There are threesomes from the same country, the same alma-mater, winners of the same event, similar-sounding names, and even body types (not great!). There was once a “hefty guys” group at Pinehurst. They put Gregory Havret, Thomas Levet, and Brian Gay together once because all three names rhymed. I believe this year’s attempt at that bit of fun with names is the Brian Stuard, Stewart Hagestad, and Lucas Herbert group.
We also have three former U.S. amateur winners, three Spaniards, three Texas Longhorns, three Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, a “best to never win a major” group, and a Beef & Berger duo, among others. A few other themes:
Some themed @usopengolf groups: US Am champs: Bryson, Kuchar, Fitzpatrick Masters: Reed, ZJ, Charl 3 of 4 ain't bad: Phil, Rory, Spieth Ball go far: Finau, List, Woodland Vamos: Sergio, Rahm, RCB .@GTGolf: Ollie, Castro, Werenski #SEC: Dufner, Snedeker, Thornberry
— Will Gray (@WillGrayGC) June 7, 2018
The point is, the USGA is always trying to get creative with every group, even if it comes back to bite them with some controversy as it did with that “hefty guys” group. if you look hard enough, you can probably find some obvious or tangential link in a majority of the groupings.
Here’s your tee sheet for the first two days at Shinnecock Hills. I’ve bolded some of the marquee groups, including one with a large feline named three-time U.S. Open champion.

Golfer Loses Match at U.S. Amateur After Caddie’s Shocking Blunder
Segundo Oliva Pinto lost his match at the U.S. Amateur thanks to an incredible error by his caddie.
That’s an amateur mistake
A golfer competing in the Round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur Championships in Oregon was eliminated on Thursday after losing his match on the final hole—not because of anything he did, though.
Segundo Oliva Pinto was tied with Tyler Strafaci heading into the final hole and put his third shot on the par-5 hole into a greenside bunker. Oliva Pinto could still get up and down to save par but instead automatically forfeited the hole due to the actions of his caddie.
The caddie stepped into the bunker and brushed the sand with his hand. That’s a violation of
USGA rule 12.2 (b), which states you must not “deliberately touch sand in the bunker with your hand, a club or rake or any other object to test the condition of the sand and learn information for your next stroke.” The same goes for the player’s caddie, who could relay the information to the player. In stroke play, it’s a two-stroke penalty. In match play, you automatically forfeit the hole. Since Oliva Pinto and Strafaci were tied, the blunder handed the victory to Strafaci.
“As soon as I get back there, the referee comes up and asks my caddie what happened, and I’m completely shocked," Oliva Pinto told the Golf Channel. “I’m just trying to get this shot near [the hole] and try and make an up-and-down and win the match. He touched the sand or something, and that’s a penalty.”
Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine reports that Oliva Pinto’s caddie told the rules official, ”I didn’t touch the sand” and repeated the assertion on the way back to the clubhouse.
The caddie’s infraction was spotted by the caddie for Strafaci, his father, Frank Jr. The younger Strafaci said it was too bad the match had to be decided that way.
“It sucks that it came down to that because it was a phenomenal match,” he told the Golf Channel.
The Golf Channel identifies Oliva Pinto’s caddie as Brant Brewer, a local caddie at Bandon Dunes, the upscale golf resort with five world renowned courses where the tournament is being played. It’s shocking that a caddie at a prominent course like that, especially one apparently trusted enough to get such a high-profile assignment, wouldn’t know the rules.
I’ve only ever had two jobs: writing for Sports Illustrated and caddying at a country club. I carried golf bags in Connecticut from eighth grade until I graduated from college and started here, and I’ve actually been in a situation similar to what happened with Oliva Pinto. After a heavy rain storm, I bent down to touch the green and see how much water it had retained. My player’s opponents could have called me on it but they were just rich guys playing for a couple of bucks per hole, not in the final stages of one of the country’s top amateur competitions.

Yellow Jacket Roundup: Straight to Voicemail
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
ATLANTA, GEORGIA – There’s a lot to chat about this week, but perhaps the most bizarre occurrence was that no one RSVP’d to swimming and diving’s invitational. In the meantime, let’s talk everything else, first.
No. 3 Golf
Tech sits just one shot back of the leader (No. 2 Oklahoma) after one day of play in Puerto Rico. The Jackets got off to a hot start, finishing a total of six shots under par, thanks to solid showings farther down the lineup, despite a garish ten above par from Tyler Strafaci. Connor Howe, with a four under par, is currently atop the leaderboard.
This week: A couple more days in beautiful Puerto Rico for the Yellow Jackets, who look to win this tournament for the seventh time.
No. 17 Women’s Tennis
Tech falls to Miami, 5-2 Tech downs Northwestern, 4-2
The Jackets got off to a rough start this weekend after a strong showing in the ITA Indoor Championships. Tech played Miami outside, but the Floridians weren’t fazed, even despite going down 2-0 from dropping the doubles point and a quick two set match. It was all ‘Canes from there, and they raced to victory on the back of a sweep of the rest of the singles points.
On Sunday, Tech was back in Chicago for the second time in as many weeks to face Northwestern. This one, though, turned out a lot better for Tech, with the Jackets victorious at 4-2. It didn’t start out great for the visitors, though, with the doubles point all Northwestern. Though Monika Dedaj fell in two sets on court six, the top of the singles lineup all came through, securing four points on the top four courts, with Kenya Jones notching another ranked win in a tight first set/easy second set combo, Victoria Flores adding a second two set win, and Nami Otsuka and Gia Cohen fighting into third sets to nab victories of…
