Okay, I'm a data nerd. But this is so interesting?!

In my experience, when people are trying to unlearn bias, the first thing they do is go, "okay, so when I see that someone was president of the women's hockey team or something, I tend to dismiss them, but they could be good! I should try to look at them, instead of immediately dismissing candidates who are women! That makes sense, I can do that!"
And then they don't realize that they can also look at identical resumes, one with a "man's" name and one with a "woman's" name, and come away being more impressed by the "man's" resume.
So then they start having HR remove the names from all resumes. But they don't extrapolate from all this and think about whether the interviewer might also be biased. They don't think about how many different ways you can describe the same exact tasks at the same exact job, and how some of them sound way better.
They don't think about how, the more marginalized someone is, the less access they have to information about what language to use. And the more likely they are to have been "trained," by the way people treat them, to minimize their own skills and achievements.
They don't think about why certain words sound polished to them, and whether that's actually reflecting how good the person using that language will be at their job.
In this How To Cook That video, she talks about the fact that they're training that type of software on, say, ten years of hiring data, and that inherently means it's going to learn the biases reflected in that data... and that what AI models do is EXAGGERATE what they've learned.
Her example is that if you do a Google image search for "doctor," 90% of them will be men, even though in real life only 63% are men.
This is all fascinating to me because this is why representation matters. This is such an extreme, obvious example of why representation matters. OUR brains look at everything around us and learn who the world says is good at what.
We learn what a construction worker looks like, what a general practitioner doctor looks like, what a pediatrician looks like, what a teacher looks like.
We look at the people in our lives and in the media we consume and the ambient media we live through. And we learn what people who matter in our particular society look like.
We learn what a believable, trustworthy person looks like. The kind of person who can be the faux-generic-human talking to you about or illustrating a product.
Unless we also actively learn that other kinds of people matter equally, are equally trustworthy and believable... we don't.
And that affects EVERYTHING.
Also, this seems very easy to undo -- for AI, at least.
Like, instead of giving it a dataset of all the pictures of doctors humans have put out there, they could find people who actively prefer diverse, interesting groups of examples. And give the dataset to a bunch of them, first, to produce something for AI to learn from.
Harvard has a whole slew of really good tests for bias, although I would love to see more. (Note: they say things like "gay - straight, " but it's not testing how you feel about straight people. It's testing whether you have negative associations about gay people, and it uses straight people as a kind of baseline.)
There must be a way for image-recognition AI software to take these tests and reveal how biased a given model is, so it can be tweaked.
A lot of people would probably object that you're biasing the model intentionally if you do that. But we know the models are biased. We know we all have cultural biases. (I mean. Most people know that, I think.)
Anyway, this is already known in the field. There are plenty of studies about the biases in different AI programs, and the biases humans have.
That means we're already choosing to bias models intentionally. Both by knowingly giving them our biases, and by knowing they'll make our biases even bigger. And we already know this has a negative impact on people's lives.

is copywriting a good job to look into as a writer? im job hunting and i see quite a few openings online but im worried the work will be extremely dreary
i didnt set out to be a copywriter -- frankly when i graduated i had no idea what i wanted to do. i spent about three and a half years freelancing and doing gig work and i'd make like 140 bucks a month on a good year. i happened to apply for a copywriting job among a sea of other entry level things -- social media coordinator, communications associate etc. and i feel SOOOOO fucking blessed that i fell into copywriting
in terms of money: copywriting is very lucrative if you get the experience for it and stay the course. my very first position with no prior copywriting experience (just freelance writing experience) paid me 35/hr. starting off you'll probably make about 50k but moving up the hierarchy can pay a LOT. with four years of experience, during my job hunt i would say the vast majority of the positions i interviewed were within a six figure salary band. moving up the hierarchy, lots of senior copywriters make six figs, and some associate creative directors make over 200k. you can definitely live comfortably as a career copywriter if you play your cards right.
in terms of work: personally i love copywriting, but it's an arm of marketing. if you cant stomach writing marketing materials or learning how marketing works, it might not be for you, but i kinda make it into a game in my head. there's a lot of different kinds of copy -- short form (landing pages, social media blurbs, headlines, emails, product descriptions etc) and long form (white papers, SEO articles/blog posts, ebooks). i would aim to find a copywriting position that will have a wide scope of copy types, because that helps cultivate a well-rounded resume (i.e. shoot for a job that'll have you writing landing pages, emails and blog posts etc over one that's just headlines and captions).
there is also B2C (business to customer, as in marketing a consumer product to individuals) and B2B (business to business, as in marketing a product like mailchimp to a business). i mostly do B2C, but I also do B2B now. it's fine to start with just one, but i'd say right now demand is very high for B2B
the good thing about copywriting is that basically any industry requires it in some capacity. i've worked predominantly in entertainment and digital media, but right now i'd say the biggest demand is in healthcare, fintech and SaaS (software). i freelance for a telehealth company right now in part because i want to make my portfolio more well-rounded. but as i said, nearly any industry can need one -- hospitality, beauty, fashion, retail, nonprofits, anything that is a business that needs to be advertised. when i started, i worked in television, which meant my days largely consisted of watching shows before air and writing episode descriptions. i had a lot of fun!
personally, i dont find my work dreary. sometimes it can be a LITTLE tedious if i'm writing something more technical/internal, but the whole point of copywriting is to figure out how to entice someone to check something out, which means puzzling out how to write something fun and engaging. if you want something less marketing-focused, i would look into getting into technical writing. this is basically writing informational texts and guides for technology and similar things. it pays VERY well and is usually in high demand, but i will say it's definitely more tedious than copywriting.
in short: yes i love copywriting and you can be very financially stable in it! i'd argue it's one of the most financially comfortable day jobs for someone with writing experience. happy hunting anon!!!! i hope u get what ur after

What are you researching about the worms?
sorry this took me so long to answer lol I'm working 40 hrs/wk in the lab and then like 30 at my other job so i am. busy.
anyway, we're doing research into the functionality of glutamate in different C. elegans mutants and how those mutations affect the uptake of glutamate at the GLR-1 receptor. we fluorescently tagged the glutamate and so when we look at a worm under a fluorescent scope, we can see bright spots (puncta) along the ventral nerve cord (VNC) of the worms where glutamate has attached to the GLR-1 receptors. some of the different mutations were looking at are the daf-7, pag-3, ida-1, and various combinations of them, and then we'll analyze the differences in the glutamate uptake and evaluate the pathway/see how we can apply it to the homologous pathways in humans :) here's a picture of the VNC with some fluorescent puncta (it shows up green under the scope, but the camera only does black and white)

Kiryu (WC): Initially a Stock clerk was eventually Promoted to IT (responsible for price accuracy for the printed price shelf tags, maintaining the computers, point of sale software the cash registers use, and any electronic scales that weigh and print prices).
Akiyama (CE): Investor. Due to his generous “donations” to the company, he is part of the chairman’s entourage (due to his wallet’s  size, his opinion matters). Thanks to him (and Tachibana), they were able to raise the salaries of the employees not part of upper management, so all of them love him and get along well when he is there. Akiyama can admit that he grew quite fond of many employees, especially Hana who will become his personal secretary. As expected, many members of upper management can’t stand him, wondering why he is even allowed to be around (they are jealous)
Haruka (WC): Cashier
Nishiki (WC): Online order clerk. Spends a lot of time chatting with Kiryu but likes his position since he is away from the upper management most of the day (he thinks they are scary and wants none of it)
Yumi (WC): Cashier
Daigo (CE): Chairman. A big picture of him is in the store saying he is the boss but you can rarely see him in the building. But for the few times, he visits the place, the upper management wake up out of their coma and pull up an act as if issues where not part of their daily lifes (they basically threaded MAjima to not blow the whistle about who is not doing their jobs.  Saejima (WC):. He prefers something more simple and since he listens to Majima’s endless rants about his position everytime. he would better be left alone away from customer service but ended up as a Loss prevention associate (helps a grocery store combat and apprehend shoplifters and unlawful employees. They often monitor security cameras for suspicious activity, and some dress as shoppers to monitor activity covertly. Loss prevention associates often contact local law enforcement to alert them of problems.). Lee, who is a security guard works along him.
Ryuji (C): Rude customer
Yuya (WC): shopping cart attendant. While he was proposed higher level position many times, he declined them
Nishida (UP): Previously a stock clerk who graduated from his position to become Majima’s right man. They separate Majima’s workload between them.
Majima (UP): Customer Service Representative. Held to higher regard because of more experience, knowledge, and skills. Since nobody in this company wants to do their job, he has to do a lot people’s tasks. Is the main person dealing with issues with customers (that’s the person we send when they say “I wanna talk to the manager”). Stressed.
Date: (highest working class) Pharmacist.
Rikiya (WC): Floor Clerk
Hana: (upper working class) HR Secretary. She will likely interview new employees. Nishitani (UP): Supervisor. Regardless his personality, he actually does his job. He knows how to make the daily life spicy (Kashiwagi hates but since he knows how to manage rude clients to fuck off so gracefully and he can shut down arguments easily). Since he does his job so well, you can find do all type of random stuff in the store like taking hold of the AUX cord to blast Japanese 80s hits in the radion (play Namidawo Misenaide -Boys Don't Cry- by WINK) or buying items just to annoy Majima. His favorite activity is to announce employees birthdays on the store’s microphone before slapping a cake in their faces (Kiryu couldn’t escape it, Nishiki ran for his life). Nishitani succeeded to slap a cake in daigo’s face to everyone’s excitement (covertly or invertly expressed). He is just appointed himself to Mine’s burning anger, not now but one day. Always to take home what they are supposed get rid of (past date item and damaged food products) Mine (CE): Chairman Assistant/Secretary.
Kashiwagi (UP): Inventory Control Specialist. Give this man a break. He is at the clock at 6AM everyday. Mr. Black Coffee. He spends most of his time making calls to suppliers (and often arguing with them) and check the inventory (IF PEOPLE WERE ENTERING THE DATA CORRECTLY SMH.)
Shinida (WC): Grocery clerk, who graduated from his position to become (kinda off) Majima assistant to help with everyday tasks. To take charge when Majima is too tired or angry. If not, they kinda work as duo for Majima’s work load.
  Tachibana (CE): Financial Advisor. He is basically the one over the upper management of the store. If it was not for him being so good at problem-solving and calm regardless of the situation, Daigo will penalize him for how poorly the upper management are doing their job (that’s not on him lol). Always wanted to give Kiryu a promotion so he could join the upper management team and put things back in order.
Baba (WC): shopping cart attendant. Just wants to put his earphones on be left alone.
Hamura, Kuze & Sagawa (UP): Head supervisior, but nobody is sure what is role is since they can’t answer nobody’s questions about anything. More the corporate type, since they send another head supervisor (lower than them) to do all the work (a.k.a answering clients complaints). they spend all their day laughing, chatting and smoking and discussing everything but work-related things. But if there’s financial losses or their quota are not met, you will sure hear one of them raging anger ready to crack the whip on any subordinates. Shimano (CE): Store Manager. He represents the Chairman when he is not there. So he kinda acts like he owns the place (in a way he does owns the building). He is the one watching over a lot of things in the store and especially keeping an eye over the employees. He picks Majima apart and sends Sagawa to scold him about what he is supposedly doing wrong. He is behind most (if not all) employees discharges. Keeps the business afloat. Mirei (UP): HR Yakuza 7/Like A Dragon

Ichiban (WC): Started as a custodian but (after Jo’s training) was upgraded to stock clerk for general merchandise and non-perishable food items. They are always calling him to go check prices and exchange articles since he is so fast and his store clerk colleagues are nowhere to be found.
Adachi (upper working class): Butcher Nanba: (upper working class) Works in the pharmacy.
Han Joongi (WC): Food Preparation: Bread.
Zhao (WC): Food Preparation: Pastry/bakery. Decorates the cakes and makes pastries sold in the grocery store. Saeko (WC): Beauty & Health Department Staff. Masato Arakawa/Ryo Aoki & Kume (C): KAREN Jo Sawashiro (UP): Hourly Supervisor & Training. Technically has the same job as Nishitani but he doesn’t even want to associate with this brown hair clown. But recently he has been upgraded to pay management and was more than willing to cut Ichiban’s pay off when he accidently spilled his coffee on him. (Chill, Jo! Is it even legal?!? Some believe, him and Shimano use the grocery store for money laundering.

Hi! If you’re willing to share, I was just wondering what degree you have or if you could give a vague idea of what field you work in. I’m trying to figure out a new career path and I still don’t have a clue of what to do.
You’re so capable and smart at what you do in GOs so I was wondering if you have recs for stable career paths or if you have advise in being as good at management as you are. Sorry if this seems intrusive! (Please don’t feel like you have to answer if you can’t/don’t have time or if these feel intrusive. I totally understand. Otherwise, I am very appreciative of a tiny bit of advise or insight into a stable career path.)
ahh i can try to answer about my own experience but my knowledge of jobs outside my own industry is pretty limited so this may not make for the best advice just an fyi;;;
i majored in accounting in uni and worked a few years in public accounting firms. it's not exactly an experience i'd recommend to everyone bc public is pretty stressful and it's 60+ hr weeks during busy season, but i learned so much there so don't regret it. we mostly work with spreadsheets and numbers and the standards for accuracy and proper documentation are really high. so those skills def helped me set up this GO in a way that could let me track everything comfortably.
i personally chose accounting specifically for its stability and my job didn't really get impacted by the pandemic. there's def a misconception that you have to be amazing at math to go into accounting but as someone who's definitely not good at Real Math, imo you just need to know the basics and also not hate numbers n__n;;; and if you'd like to get your cpa, then it's more about case writing skills and reading through accounting standards/tax rules than actual math calculations (at least in canada).
i will say though that quite a few of my friends have left accounting to go into tech as developers/software engineers, which has much better pay and a lot more job opportunities overall. there's coding bootcamps online so you don't have to go back to school for a full degree. however i've heard that their interviews are more technical so requires more self-study. and depending on where you work, the hours can be pretty rough too;;;
i also have some friends who are acturaries that work for insurance companies, but from what i understand, it involves harder math and they had to pass for 6-8 certification exams (in contrast i only had to pass 1). i know of a few others who got their cfa designation and got finance/analyst-type roles at banks but i'm not as familiar with the process;;;
unfortunately i don't know much about 'stable' careers outside of business/tech so that's pretty much all i can touch on;;; since my experience is pretty limited and i kind of stumbled upon my own career path, i think my only general advice is that if you're not sure about what you want, you can start with figuring out what you dislike or what would be a difficult fit for your personality type.
for me, i knew in high school that i was bad at sciences so avoided all science programs when applying to uni. i'm also not a natural speaker so it was pretty stressful whenever i had to give presentations or interact face-to-face with clients. eventually i figured out that i was better at writing and also liked working with numbers, as well as researching/digging into details to solve problems on my own, and ended up where i am now ;u;
choosing a career is such a difficult decision and i hope that you have family/friends who have more insight on your situation and can give you better feedback/support than i can;;; hopefully some of this was helpful and i wish you the best of luck!

Could AI bias cost you a job? NJ lawmaker wants more scrutiny of hiring software
There's a good chance an employer has used artificial intelligence to determine whether you’re the right fit for a job. 
Nearly one in four organizations said they either use or plan to adopt AI and other computerized processes for hiring and recruitment, according to a survey last year by the Society for Human Resource Management. Software is taking over much of the routine work of hiring, screening and information gathering, said Chinmay Hegde, an associate professor of computer science at New York University.
But skeptics worry about a dark side: that AI systems trained on past hiring decisions will simply automate racial and cultural biases that have previously shut out women, minorities, people with disabilities or other groups.
In response, some lawmakers in New Jersey want more scrutiny of how employers use AI in their hiring decisions.
“This isn’t banning the use of this software, it’s just making sure that we are checking and auditing and putting some boundaries in place to ensure equity processes,” said one of the bill’s main sponsors, state Assemblywoman Sadaf Jaffer, D-Mercer.
How the state would regulate AI
Employers also would have to notify job candidates if automated software was used in the hiring process. A first violation would trigger a $500 fine and up to $1,500 for each subsequent violation.
Jaffer's bill cleared a first hurdle when the Assembly Labor Committee approved it by an 8-1 vote on Jan. 19. A state Senate version, S1926, was introduced to that chamber's labor committee last March but so far has not received a vote.
How AI is used in hiring
Employers in the Society for Human Resource Management survey said they use AI and automation for everything from screening resumes to choosing applicants for interviews to scoring candidates on skills assessments and even administering interviews.
Sixty-four percent of HR professionals told the society they used software to automatically filter out "unqualified" applicants. Employers said the tools save them time and help them to swiftly identify top choices.
"AI systems can help analyze a large volume of resumes and more quickly search for qualified candidates," said Beena Ammanath, executive director of the Deloitte AI Institute. "Chatbots and other automated messaging systems can streamline communications with potential candidates."
What is AI bias?
While such tools can save companies time and money, without care they also "may result in unlawful discrimination," the U.S. Department of Justice warned in a notice to employers last May.
Indeed, Reuters reported in 2018 that Amazon had stopped using an AI recruiting tool because it penalized applicants with resumes that referred to "women's" activities or degrees from two all-women's colleges.
The Justice Department, in its guidance last year, warned that automated hiring can violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.
For example, the department said, a visually impaired employee who has to take an evaluation using a keyboard could fare poorly, potentially costing them a promotion or other job opportunity even if their typing skills weren't relevant to the work.
A chatbot screener might automatically reject someone with employment gaps that were caused by a disability. Or the chatbot might reject an applicant in a wheelchair who indicates that they can’t stand for long periods of time, even if they could do the job while seated. 
The department’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said employers must consciously take actions that don’t leave out disabled applicants and employees.

NJ employers urge caution
The New Jersey Business and Industry Association said more information is needed from employers on how they use artificial intelligence, and that several amendments are necessary before the group can support the bill.
“I think we don’t have a lot of concrete data about how these tools are being used in the workplace,” said Alexis Bailey, the association's vice president of government affairs. 
"We’ve heard anecdotes here and there about different issues that have arisen, but I think until we fully understand exactly what these tools are, exactly how they’re being used in the workplace, it’s hard to say where we as a state should come down on regulations,” Bailey said. “We say tread carefully, just because there’s a lot of unknowns and things are changing, as it always does with technology.” 
Last year, the New York City Council approved one of the nation's first laws to regulate AI in hiring. But the city has delayed implementation, after being inundated with questions about what sorts of automation fall under its rules, who will conduct audits and what they should measure.
How to hack AI used in hiring
Job seekers can tailor their resume to look more appealing to algorithms by including terms or phrases from the job description, said Ammanath, of the Deloitte AI Institute.
"Creative or unusual resumes" should be avoided, as "images, artwork and unusual fonts typically do not work well with AI models," Ammanath added. "When it comes to resume formats, candidates should use standard resume templates and common fonts."
But Ridhi Shetty, a policy counsel at the Center for Democracy & Technology in Washington, D.C., said that "at the end of the day, having workers try and think of ways to circumvent these tools really just puts the onus on workers to avoid being discriminated against, rather than doubling down on employers and vendors, who should be more accountable for their practices."

Okay, I'm a data nerd. But this is so interesting?!
She starts out by looking at whether YouTube intense promotion of short-form content is harming long-form content, and ends up looking at how AI models amplify cultural biases.
In one of her examples, Amazon had to stop using AI recruitment software because it was filtering out women. They had to tell it to stop removing resumes with the word "women's" in them.
But even after they did that, the software was filtering out tons of women by doing things like selecting for more "aggressive" language like "executed on" instead of, idk, "helped."
Which is exactly how humans act. In my experience, when people are trying to unlearn bias, the first thing they do is go, "okay, so when I see that someone was president of the women's hockey team or something, I tend to dismiss them, but they could be good! I should try to look at them, instead of immediately dismissing candidates who are women! That makes sense, I can do that!"
And then they don't realize that they can also look at identical resumes, one with a "man's" name and one with a "woman's" name, and come away being more impressed by the "man's" resume.
So then they start having HR remove the names from all resumes. But they don't extrapolate from all this and think about whether the interviewer might also be biased. They don't think about how many different ways you can describe the same exact tasks at the same exact job, and how some of them sound way better.
They don't think about how, the more marginalized someone is, the less access they have to information about what language to use. And the more likely they are to have been "trained," by the way people treat them, to minimize their own skills and achievements.
They don't think about why certain words sound polished to them, and whether that's actually reflecting how good the person using that language will be at their job.
In this How To Cook That video, she talks about the fact that they're training that type of software on, say, ten years of hiring data, and that inherently means it's going to learn the biases reflected in that data... and that what AI models do is EXAGGERATE what they've learned.
Her example is that if you do a Google image search for "doctor," 90% of them will be men, even though in real life only 63% are men.
This is all fascinating to me because this is why representation matters. This is such an extreme, obvious example of why representation matters. OUR brains look at everything around us and learn who the world says is good at what.
We learn what a construction worker looks like, what a general practitioner doctor looks like, what a pediatrician looks like, what a teacher looks like.
We look at the people in our lives and in the media we consume and the ambient media we live through. And we learn what people who matter in our particular society look like.
We learn what a believable, trustworthy person looks like. The kind of person who can be the faux-generic-human talking to you about or illustrating a product.
Unless we also actively learn that other kinds of people matter equally, are equally trustworthy and believable... we don't.
And that affects EVERYTHING.
Also, this seems very easy to undo -- for AI, at least.
Like, instead of giving it a dataset of all the pictures of doctors humans have put out there, they could find people who actively prefer diverse, interesting groups of examples. And give the dataset to a bunch of them, first, to produce something for AI to learn from.
Harvard has a whole slew of really good tests for bias, although I would love to see more. (Note: they say things like "gay - straight, " but it's not testing how you feel about straight people. It's testing whether you have negative associations about gay people, and it uses straight people as a kind of baseline.)
There must be a way for image-recognition AI software to take these tests and reveal how biased a given model is, so it can be tweaked.
A lot of people would probably object that you're biasing the model intentionally if you do that. But we know the models are biased. We know we all have cultural biases. (I mean. Most people know that, I think.)
Anyway, this is already known in the field. There are plenty of studies about the biases in different AI programs, and the biases humans have.
That means we're already choosing to bias models intentionally. Both by knowingly giving them our biases, and by knowing they'll make our biases even bigger. And we already know this has a negative impact on people's lives.
