info about photography / edits
lol, i doubt anyone will read this or care, but w/e i have time to burn :'D
your local photog here to remind you that copyright law is merciless & doesn't care much about if you don't know what you're doing or do - if you're profiting off of edits of photos / using them in work you are getting to do be CAREFUL. places like pinterest, tumblr, twitter, etc are NOT good sources to get images ethically. even the more acceptable options for free photos only go as far as to protect their users. indemnification clauses only do so much! know what your rights are as a creator making a profit off of edits. know what licensing the photos you are using have available. just because there's a lower risk of getting caught doesn't mean that things couldn't possibly get fucky - and, honestly, you gotta decide if it's worth fuckin' over other creatives if you keep using stuff that's not been ethically gained!
( example : if you grab a stolen photo off of pinterest and use it for your edit, sure there's an inherent risk of getting told to stop using it or worse, but that's also money out of another artist's pocket. and, of course, the photog could potentially ask you to pay for licensing or, worst case scenario, sue! )
it's getting pretty fucking easy to find photos that have been taken / misused - protect yourself, protect other creatives. there's a lot of stock open for non-commercial use and plentyyyy of stuff that you can use for free on the up and up - your results may vary, ofc, but pleaaase try.
Under the cut is a list of links - places where you can find public domain photos, info about creative commons, and info about different public domain photo sites.
Library Of Congress - Public Domain Photos Sample ( Primarily older images! There is an entire online section outside this that's comprised of millions of images, but rights differ for some collections. )
New York Public Library: Public domain digital collection ( Keep in mind this also has a lot of archived historical content - please don't traumatize yourself. You can see NYPL's statement on historic content here. I personally suggest just searching up exactly what you need - for example, you can pull a lot of lovely botanical drawings! )
Smithsonian Open Access: Everything from photos of wild animals, to vintage furniture, and more!
National Gallery Of Art: Their permanent collection has an open access policy for both commercial and non-commercial use.
Creative Commons Info: Information about the various types of CC licensing - also has a repository of CC images!
Images: A Guide To Visual Resources: UIC has an entire online section about using visual resources, public domain, and attribution for different types of content. Neat!
Pros & Cons Of Different Photo Sites: If you're not sure of where to start or need something more specific than what galleries / museums offer, you can consider places like Pexels, Wiki Commons, etc.

Image of Research awards show beauty of UIC science
Each spring, the UIC Graduate College and Library co-organize The Image of Research, an interdisciplinary competition open to all graduate students across campus. This year’s awards were announced on April 28th and reflect the scientific diversity of the competition with winners from social sciences, humanities, biology, and engineering and subjects ranging from school closures and poetry to the immune system and fluid dynamics.
The competition included both still image and moving image categories, with the latter naming first place winners in both animation and live action sub-categories.
Below, you can view a selection of the winning still images, with a description of the project in the alt text. Learn about all of the winners and honorable mentions at the Graduate College website.

Colitas and my Comic Books.
My first dog´s name was Colitas, daugther of Colitas which I received as a family gift from my aunt Coco when I turned 3 years old. I remember lying in bed welcoming the tiny baby dog. We played luchas daily and some of the moves were probably ilegal. Her fangs and teeth were very sharp and pointy but her claws were not of much use yet. She lived a long and happy life. She was the mother of another bitch named Fea, being so dear to my heart.
My good friend and one of my mentors in Learning Science Research and Education, PhD. Josh Radinsky (LSRI, UIC) let me borrow some books on comic book literacy and a brief history of the medium. After reading those books I realized I had been an avid comic book reader and graphic novel collector since a young age. Enpowering. My readings were as unconventional as the places I gather them from. Cultura popular. No barata y muy rica en especie. More than half of those lectures would not be suitable for children today. Very predictable.
Video Risa, Video Risa de Oro, Readers Digest, El Libro Vaquero, Así soy ¿y Qué?, El Mil Chistes, Hermelinda Linda, Las Andanzas de Aniceto, Asterix, El Libro Passional, Charlie Brown, Mafalda, Rius, María, Simón Simonazo, Capulina, Capulinita, Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Phantomas, Historias de Jesús (Non canonical - El petirrojo, Auspicious king with lepra, as two examples.)
Later readings, The Sandman, Mouse. Names like Harvey Eisenberg and Yolanda Vargas Dulché started to fill my pantheon of writers, illustrators, typists, printers, colorists, editors, page layout specialists, delivery personnel and logistics amongst many other pages, names and operations.
Knowing I knew a lot about comic books and graphic novels already strengthen my interest in cultivating that knowledge and use it for what I do. For me, like for many people, my main library was the Library, the corridors of El Metro and the newspaper stands. My family always foster my education and my brother’s way beyond their means. I'm glad I didn't waste their investment living an empty life. I’m always full and there's nothing I want or need to do in the future to be fulfilled, I have done what I had to do, at this point in time. I have no future only a life to live.
Luis Sánchez Ramírez. 2023.

hey this is kinda a college question, but when a college says “why are u interested in us” is it better to just talk abt a specific feature u like abt their campus or say that they have a good program for ur major?
the more specific the better. stay away from generic statements. one of the biggest things that annoy people who read applications is when students write generic “why I want to go here” essays and just plug in the names of all the colleges they’re applying to (which sometimes leads to them sending the wrong version to colleges lmfao). anyway tl;dr the subject isn’t really a big deal as long as you be as specific and genuine as you possibly can

100 Days of Writing Day 14
Reworked the opening of my SGA rewrite today. and I needed to give myself a break from the feels
@the-wip-project
--
Raising an eyebrow at the ‘five calls missed’ and ‘voicemail’ notifications, Max tapped the log and saw that three of the calls were from Daniel Jackson while the other two were from Pietyr, her long-time boyfriend.
“Really.” she muttered to herself as the microwave dinged to let her know it was done, but Max ignored it in favor of trying to figure out what Daniel Jackson would be calling about.
Her and Daniel Jackson had met when they were both undergrads at University of Illinois-Chicago, they had been taking the same grant writing mini-course their sophomore year and decided to partner together for an assignment. Max was tossing around the idea of going into research rather than actual teaching and it had taken until the end of the mini-course for both of them to realize they had a lot of the same professors and a number of other things in common. So once the course was done they decided to study together, spending late nights at a nearby twenty-four hour diner that served greasy fries and strong coffee- laughing as the other proposed something hilarious. Or at the UIC library working in adjacent carrols, one trying to finish a paper while the other crammed for a test.
Their friends thought it was amusing how they spent so much time together but never considered seeing if they wanted to be more than study friends. Max never felt that way towards Daniel, he was someone who would proof her papers and remind her why she was getting a double-degree at once. And in turn she would listen to him ramble on about Ancient Egypt, help him study for his tests, and invite him home during breaks when it was clear he really didn’t have any family around.
Things stayed that way until they both got their Master’s and Max decided she wanted to go into teaching instead of writing papers while Daniel was going to start on his Doctorate. But they still kept in touch over the years; postcards, emails, and voicemails let them know what they were up to.
“What does Daniel want enough to call me three times?” Max asked herself while queuing up the voicemails.
