Bud Fisher who climbs the high flag poles on the Avenue of Flags at A Century of Progress, gives the crowds there a real thrill when he poises as for a dive to the asphalt 90 feet below him, on the top rung of the Mack fire truck extension ladder. He performs thrilling feats on the ladder daily when not busy with the flags.

Rachelle Slobodinsky Yarros was born May 18, 1869. Rachelle, the daughter of the wealthy Joachim and Bernice Slobodinsky, enjoyed the best available education in the Russian Empire and many other privileges, but like other young students of her generation she became interested in radical politics. She was forced to flee the Empire due to her involvement with Nihilists and began a life of struggle in America at the age of eighteen in New York. Rachelle toiled in a sweatshop at a sewing machine sitting next to other immigrants from much less privileged backgrounds than her own. She refused any aid from her father other than payment for her passage to America. Rachelle pursued self-education during this period as much as her circumstances allowed.
Rachelle was the first woman to study at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Boston and later finished her M.D. degree with distinction from Woman's Medical College in Philadelphia in 1893. She interned at New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston. While working as an intern, she met Alice Hamilton. Rachelle Slobodinsky married Victor Yarros in New York in 1894.
The couple moved to Chicago in 1895 and while Rachelle established a thriving obstetrical and gynecological practice in Chicago, Victor pursued a career in law and journalism while participating in the city's radical political circles. Dr. Yarros served as an instructor and later associate professor in clinical obstetrics at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago. Dr. Yarros was an advocate of birth control and sex education, and did groundbreaking work in obstetrical education and teaching about the techniques and social benefits of birth control.
Victor and Rachelle Yarros resided at Hull-House from 1907 to 1927, and the couple found ready support for many of their activities there. Dr. Yarros helped to found the American Social Hygiene Association in 1914, a group dedicated to fighting against venereal disease. She helped organize the Illinois Birth Control League (IBCL) and with the help of Margaret Sanger, founder of the American Birth Control League (later Planned Parenthood Federation of America), Dr. Yarros opened the first birth control clinic in Chicago in 1922. Dr. Yarros continued to teach about birth control and other medical health issues, especially those affecting the poor, throughout her career. Some notable highlights include her appointment as Professor of Social Hygiene at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1926, a position created especially for her, and the publication of her book, Modern Woman and Sex in 1933.
UIC Special Collections and University Archives has two collections relating to Rachelle Yarros: the Rachelle and Victor Yarros collection, which consists of correspondence, book reviews, notes, and clippings; and 027-08-20-01-- College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago-- Obstetrics and Gynecology -- Rachelle S. Yarros Collection. For any questions and more info, Ask A Librarian!
