Full session - teaching pugilism (raw footage)
This is the first session, introducing the basics of the clinch, which is a great leveler within self defence. Once mastered, the clinch can allow you to manipulate, control and end a much larger and stronger opponent.
Being able to stand one on one with a physically superior opponent, is an essential requirement of Self Defence, and this is where pugilism excels.

A great way to defend yourself against an opponent who gets too close! And a series of Self Defence techniques perfect for women!
Here we see a superb example of how to transition from standing chancery, to front chancery and then to side chancery, to maximise damage and prolong dominance over your opponent (as seen this works against even much stronger and larger individuals)
Never fight unless you have to, but when it’s time to fight, you fight like you're the third monkey going up to Noah's ark... and brother, its starting to rain!
Anything to Win - The Ultimate Fighting Manual
Written by Alastair Devlin, the aim of this manual will be to collect all the fighting techniques from pugilism of old, the mind-set of the fighters from this period being:
"Anything To Win"
No rules, no mercy. This fighting manual is the most complete and functional "Street Defence" training manual ever made.

Traditionally, within the clinch, the strongest position to resist the manipulations of your opponent, is where you stand proud and upright, with your shoulders high. This makes it difficult for your opponent to use the certain angles of attack that make levering your head into dangerous positions easier. The "sweet spot" - the top part of the back of your head, is harder to reach, and your shoulders can pin their arms, giving your opponent little room to move.
However, this traditional defence only evolved within a more modern ruleset. We still see in burmese boxing (where the rules are more relaxed) the counter to this defence - the headbutt.
Within this teaching video, I simply introduce the idea of the headbutt to my sister, so that she can become aware of it early on, as it is a great game changer against an unsuspecting opponent.
We will cover the headbutt in more detail later kn, in multiple videos.

Daniel Medoza is considered to be, by many, including myself, the " father of defensive boxing"
Indeed many of the defences used today in modern boxing, can find themselves rooted in his forward thinking teachings.
His stance was more side-on, than traditional pugilistic defences, and employed a greater degree of mobility, both for defence and offence.
His stance afforded him a great range of vision, allowing him to fully see his opponents, and react accordingly, essential for his mobile defence concept to be successful. In essence his beliefs were, that it was better not to get hit at all!
The mobility this stance afforded, in contrast to the more traditional stances, allowed Mendoza to attack from somewhat unusual angles, varying his attacks and taking his opponents by surprise.
It is easy to see how this stance has contributed to modern defences, however it is also easy to see how this stance is still one adopted by a pugilist, rather than a modern boxer. The hands are low and protect the body rather than the head. This of course, is because it is more effective to land body blows in pugilism due to the bare fist being used, whereas modern boxers use a gloved fist.
Gloves became mandatory when the Marquis of Queensbury Rules were drafted in 1865, and officially adopted in 1892. Over time the weight of glove increased, and with it the shift of focus on targeting the head, rather than the body. As such the the defences employed by the fighters of said period, evolved, now favouring those that offered more protection to the head, in contrast to the body.

Big part of my upcoming book will be focuses on historical fighters, that many have forgotten.
True champions and pioneers in the sweet science.
Today's historical fighter is:
"Gentleman" John Jackson
(the "Emperor of Pugilism")BORN  September 25 1769; London, EnglandDIEDOctober 7 1845; London, EnglandHEIGHT..5-11WEIGHT202 lbsBACKERColonel Harvey Aston
Jackson was a very strong all-around athlete and a two-fisted, scientific boxer; In addition to his fistic skills, he was an excellent sprinter and jumper
Unlike many of the fighters of his time, "Gentleman" John socialized with members of the upper echelon of society; He dressed well and conducted himself well with fine manners; His symmetry in frame and fine muscular development made him a fitting model for sculptors
Most infamous for defeating Daniel Mendoza, taking the championship title, by holding onto his hair, pinning him in place, until he finished him with multiple stikes to the head. A true "Gentleman!"
