The first time a Navajo baby laughs, the family throws a party. The person who made the baby laugh covers the expenses, prepares the food, gathers the rock salt, puts candy and gifts into bags, and invites friends from near and far.
The Navajo have a unique tradition. When a baby is born, it is regarded as the ultimate, precious gift and must never be abused. From the moment of birth, the child is watched over continuously by family and friends, who patiently wait for the child’s first…laugh.
“Has your baby laughed?” is common question posed to parents who have infants around the age of three months. The first laugh of a Navajo child is a very significant event. It marks the child’s final passing from the spirit world to the physical world, meaning he or she is now fully human. This milestone warrants a party, and what a party it is!
Whichever brother, sister, parent, cousin, aunt, uncle, or passing acquaintance is present at the first laugh is deemed to have caused it.  The laughter instigator then receives the honored privilege of preparing a special ceremony to welcome the child into society.
Once a baby has laughed, training in generosity begins immediately—a value held in high regard among the Navajo people. At the party, where the baby is considered the host, the parents or person responsible for the first laugh help hold the baby’s hand as he or she ceremonially gives the rock salt, food, and gifts to each guest. There are also bags of candy, money, and other presents that the child “gives” along with the food.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek and The Unseen World
Tumblr media
By holding his brass microscope toward a source of light, van Leeuwenhoek was able to observe living organisms too small to be seen with the unaided eye.
Tumblr media
The specimen was placed on the tip of the adjustable point and viewed from the other side through the tiny, nearly spherical lens. The highest magnification possible with his microscopes was about 3003 (times).
Tumblr media
Some of van Leeuwenhoek’s drawings of bacteria were made in 1683. The letters represent various shapes of bacteria. C–D represents a path of motion he observed

i love using ultrafacts as an impetus to research the most random shit. the amount of info they give is hardly ever enough to sate my curiosity, let alone convince my internal legitimacy meter that they aren't spouting bs, so more often than not i end up articles deep in Random Historical Event 47181947 before i finally come back, add the post to my silly queue, and continue on my dash-y way. it's great fun.

An interesting journey of discovery
So first I stumbled upon this from Ultrafacts:
Tumblr media
Well THAT’S interesting. Some googling confirmed it: John Cleese talked in an interview about when he learned of this in school -- his English teacher seemed to have come away with the impression that “If you didn't give up, you couldn't lose.” And that led to “It’s just a flesh wound!!!” years later.
Then I checked Wikipedia for the wrestler they were talking about, and was brought up short by this image:
Tumblr media
I know that statue, I thought. I’ve seen it with wings.
And I wasn’t wrong.
Tumblr media
Yup, it’s the same one! Different angle, but same pose.
Tumblr media
So that’s amazing. Monty Python, ineffable stubbornness, and naked wrestling.
I’m not sure what conclusion to draw from this, but I’m sure there are several.

Can I get uhh............ Some facts about facts?
The facts machine was invented by Xerox in 1964. This is not the company now called Xerox which took her name, but Xerox C. Samsung, founder of the company Hewlett-Packard.
The facts machine was capable of transmitting images and text across phone lines, which had been invented the previous year by Alexander Graham Cracker while attempting to string two cups together for a new sport he intended to call "CornBoloHoleHolio."
The first facts machine was able to transmit at a rate of 0.0033 bits per second, so the first facts ever sent, which were facts about the differences between jam and preserves, took 45 hours to send, and came out garbled because the receiving printer device was jammed, and thus it has not been preserved.
Modern facts machines, such as tumblr, are much faster, but are plagued by fake facts written by blogs such as "ultrafacts," "did-you-know," and "staff." Thus, no facts on tumblr should ever be trusted, except for these facts in this post, from this blog.
