Fun Fact
Kazakhstan’s Minister of Communications and Informatics has blocked the Tumblr site because it contained 60 sites of terrorism, extremism, and pornography in 2015.
You know, watching Legend of Vox Machina Season II really reminds me that 5e dragons just got the short end of the stick.
All 5e dragons follow the same template:
A Multiattack
A Bite
A Claw
A couple of Legendary actions which usually include a tail slap and a wing attack.
A breath attack that recharges on a 5-6.
Whereas the dragons in LOVM are using abilities like:
An AOE acid flyover attack caused by the wings scattering acid.
Creating ice walls to separate the party.
Lingering poison gas clouds.
AOE flame attacks that strike a wide area and leave lingering flames.
You know what this reminds me of? 4e's dragons. Like, look at this ability from a 4th Edition Black Dragon.
Sets up a cloud of darkness that blinds everyone within it, allowing the dragon to evade attacks and pick off the weaker enemies.
The Ancient Red Dragon, by contrast, punishes you for trying to fight it. It has an innate aura that makes it hard to shoot it. It has a fire aura that damages anyone who tries to get in close. Anyone who tries to flank it gets slapped away. Anyone who tries to stay at range gets burned by either its Breath Weapon or single target Immolate attack.
And do you see that kicker on the breath weapon? The Red Dragon's flames are so powerful it can overcome damage resistance. There is no safe way to fight an Ancient Red Dragon.
Compare that to 5e's Ancient Red Dragon.
God, that shit is dull. It's just a better Wyrmling. It has some more attacks and a few extra powers. Half its abilities can be hard countered with a Ring of Fire Elemental Command. Lair actions make things a bit more interesting, but it's still mostly variations on "do something with fire."
4e had a lot of faults, but the monsters at least had interesting powers.
If I had a nickel for every voice actor who went from voicing a little purple dragon of a beloved children’s franchise to voicing a much larger killer dragon in Legend of Vox Machina…
Can I talk about the Swamp Boy for a moment? Because I love that Umbrasyl's involved in Ripley's hunt for the Vestiges because a) it keeps him more involved I the main plot and makes the confrontation between him and the party more personal, but also because b) he's kinda dorky.
Like, I understand Thordak's point, I'm on his side here (what a sentence). Umbrasyl is a dragon, why does he need a sword or a bow?
But... but... look at him!
When he first gains Mythcarver, being a quadruped, he holds it with his tail like he thinks he's a Dark Souls boss!
It's adorable!
Next time we see him the sword is strapped to his forelegs with a chain?
That can't be comfortable. Also, he sure didn't put that there himself. Ripley, was that the best you could for him? Like, I know she doesn't actually care, but this is so disrespectful.
Also I appreciate Mythcarver's efforts to grow a few feet for Swampy after shrinking down for Scanlan, but Umbrasyl is still a dragon and it's strapped to his leg. It's doing nothing!
This week, Ripley brings up how powerful he'll be with the Titanstone Knuckles, a set of gauntlets.
Gauntlets. Gauntlets?!
How is he going to wear them, Anna? He doesn't have hands!
And now I can't shake off the image of what it would have looked like if Umbrasyl had actually acquired all of the Vestiges. I'm sure he would have found ways to strap them to his body.
He would have walked up to Thardak and gone "look who's more powerful now" Just... covered in trash he can't actually use.
Many have already noted the care and detail that went into the design of each dragon, and I love watching the fall of Emon over and over to see new details each time.
But we also see so much of their personalities in this scene, and I love it so much?
Thordak is there to establish dominance, show his power, and accept worshipers, like a true red. He focuses on property damage (yes, people die, too, but that will happen when you nuke a mountain!) and showing off, because he wants lots of the ants in the city to survive. He needs their terrified adoration. We stan all of his "Is this your king?" speeches as he claims his throne.
Umbrasyl is doing what they've been told to do. As the least powerful of the remaining Conclave members, they are raining death from above but not overdoing it. Thordak has no domain and subjects if they melt it all. Bonus content fight between Umbrasyl and KimAllura. (P.S. they're not dead, guys!) I have a big soft spot for Umbrasyl, and I'm curious how much we will get to see the dynamic between the dragons as the story moves forward. They barely get along, and I hope we get to see them interacting with each other more. Something went down between them after Umbrasyl took over Gatshadow, and I want to know what it is that left the black dragon alone and stranded out there with busted palantiri.
Vorugal, it's been mentioned, we don't see a lot of in the fall of Emon. But that's exactly as it should be. Think about it: Vorugal is an elite hunter. They live a solitary life, always seeking more challenging prey to indulge in their favourite pastime. What is the point of destroying a city of helpless ants to Vorugal? So they go for the most challenging targets first, i.e. Allura. I'm disappointed that we didn't get the iconic shot of Vorugal perched on the side of her tower before they destroy it, but at least Vorugal still destroyed it in this version. Then it's almost like they're searching the city for worthy prey, doing the bare minimum to satisfy Thordak's orders. Of course Vorugal tracks them to Greyskull Keep. VM are worthy targets for the white dragon. I'm sad we didn't get to see Vorugal wrestle Thordak for dominance there. That was such a fantastic scene in campaign. Hopefully we'll get to see the two of them butting heads in a different way later on.
And Raishan, clever little pixie. She's just having fun with it. You see her casually flying around the city, blowing smoke here and there before she eats Scanlan's biggest fan. But she knows what she's doing. She killed Uriel with her first attack, and after that she's pretty much like a cat. What can I do that will satisfy Thordak's command but is the most amusing to me? Playing with VM, for one. She makes sure they know who she is, and that she knows who they are. After that, she's going to do what a green dragon does: be sneaky and infiltrate their keep even before they flee to Whitestone. She was a lot more subtle about it in campaign than she is about it here, but we want new viewers to feel like they've spotted something hidden, too (LARKIN WATCH!). Good job. Raishan was the first to give her name during the attack in the campaign, and of course she gave it to us here in the fall of Emon as well. We stan a queen. You'd better put some respect on her name.
Really looking forward to seeing more of her--and all the dragons--this season. Even if they just do cut-aways to their territory or Pike has dream sequences to show what's going on with them, I'll take it. We deserve more than just their death scenes. They are legendary villains and deserve as much love as the Briarwoods.
ive watched the tlovm s2 clip 100 times, so heres my attempt to recreate the conclave's designs based on their models. i adore them all so much.
under the cut are all the screenshots i used as reference + some ramblings about their designs (its image heavy)
to start off, heres the conclave approaching at the very end of season 1. now that we've seen the dragons individually, im confident identifying each of them!!
raishan is an ugly beast and i LOVE it!!!! her wings being super tattered is a great touch. im just sad they didnt actually show her disease scar(s), but i suppose they have to keep that a mystery
vorugal is shown a ton, i love that his wings are more like a paraglider than regular dragon wings. gives him a super cool silhouette! he reminds me of a rhinoceros with the big muscle-y arms and horn
they only show thordaks underbelly, hes a big lizard. i like how the crystal looks a lot
umbrasyl's design definitely is the most different from common interpretations of him and i fucking LOVE IT!!! giving him an acid pouch is amazing!!!! and the spikes??
overall theyre all amazing designs, the team did a great job at giving them super distinct palettes and wing shapes to help tell them apart without JUST the colours red/white/black/green. ^_^ 10/10
umbrasyl growling “you have given me three vestiges of divergence!” and scanlan shouting “two. this one’s mine.” while wielding mythcarver is so fucking badass
