I’m thinking about Richie’s apology to Nat in 2x09 Bolognese when he says,
I think for a long time, I didn’t really know where I fit, you know, and I would shove myself into, like, places and things where I definitely did not fit. And I think that that probably, definitely, made things worse. And I’m sorry if I took anything out on you and if I treated you like shit.
In the same episode, Richie and Sydney acknowledge that they’re both only children and Sydney tells Richie that it’s nice he had Carmy and Nat. Richie tells Syd that now she does too. It’s a sweet moment between them and reminded me how belonging has driven so much of Richie’s actions in this show.
Just a theory but I think Richie and Natalie dated, probably briefly and probably when they were much younger. It didn’t end well and that’s contributed to Natalie’s long-running anger at him for most of the first two seasons of the show. (Nat’s also probably angry at him cos Richie is Richie: what I imagine happens when a proto-incel, QAnon, 4chan, Snyder-cut motherfucker somehow manages to be in romantic relationships despite his personality lol.)
It would also explain Richie’s (and maybe Mikey’s and Carmy’s) antagonism towards Pete. I can’t understand why those guys hate on that angel of a man so much otherwise. I reckon Richie resents Pete because he couldn’t be more different to Richie and the men in the Berzatto house, but also because Natalie chose him. It probably felt like a rejection not just of Richie as her ex but of her family too. Confirmation of a truth sitting under the surface they don’t want to excavate: that the Berzatto home often feels like a trap and that their codependence is toxic. And that Natalie got out but they’re still stuck, quicksand gripping their calves and keeping them in place.
I can see a young Richie crushing on his best friend’s sister cos she’s straightforwardly pretty and he’s not complicated in that department…Sugar talks back to Mikey and he loves seeing her eyes flash when she does. Sometimes he teases her just to have some of it directed at him. He name drops Denis Savard at her, lets her know that he got that Ceres pamphlet from behind the bar, cos he has connections like that. He’s also seen her recoil when Donna’s on one and laying into her and it makes him feel a type of way, wanting to protect her maybe. But mostly, if he can be with Sug, he’d become a Berzatto. He’d stop being Cousin cos he’d be Brother instead.

Why You Should Hire a Professional for Wall Crack Repair
Many property owners notice cracks on their home’s walls. Some are minor and not something to worry about, while others are indicative of major structural problems that may require immediate building crack inspection Sydney work. The location, direction and extent of the cracks can be helpful indicators of the severity of the problem, and it is often best to have them inspected by a professional before attempting any DIY repairs. Cracks can also be accompanied by other telltale signs that the situation is serious, such as doors and windows that can’t be opened or closed or a noticeable leaning of the building.
Wall crack repair Sydney are the result of natural shrinkage and settlement of different materials at varying rates. This process typically occurs throughout the life of a building, but significant changes in moisture levels can speed up or slow down this process, leading to wall cracks appearing. The type of material and construction of a house can also influence the rate at which these cracks develop. Brick walls can experience more extensive cracking than other types of building material, due to the fact that they have a tendency to expand and contract at different temperatures.
A building crack inspection Sydney expert can assist with identifying the causes of wall cracking and providing a cost-effective solution. These professionals can also help with recommending preventive measures to reduce the chance of these cracks occurring in the first place, such as using high-quality construction materials, installing control joints and expansion joints and properly curing concrete during construction.
One of the most common reasons for wall cracking is a result of soil movement. This can be caused by a number of factors, including flawed foundation design, poor compaction of the soil during construction and vibrations from nearby construction or heavy road traffic that cause soil particles to shift beneath a house’s footings.
In some cases, the movement in the soil under a building can be severe and create sink holes or significant downward motion in the walls (known as subsidence). This usually occurs when there is a large amount of moisture in the ground underneath a house, but can also occur if the soil becomes too wet or compacts too much.
In the case of severe subsidence, it may be necessary to excavate and rebuild the section of the foundation that is affected. This can be expensive, but it is generally the safest option to ensure that the building can continue to function safely and correctly. Homeowners should also be proactive about monitoring any wall cracks they notice, marking them with a pencil or paintbrush and taking photos of the area, including a ruler in the frame to measure their size. This can be useful information for any building crack inspection Sydney experts that need to visit the property and perform an assessment. This can also help to identify any trends in the progression of the cracks over time and determine whether any remedial actions are required.

Gold Coast Highway Gold Coast Qld Australia Tunnel underpass traffic solution
1 July 2021
Don’t mistake this low-cost underpass concept with expensive tunneling.
This is a 100 to 200 year transport solution. The present slow light rail and GC Hwy traffic situation will grid lock within 10 to 20 years with all the hi-rises being built.
Simply dig out the sand with an excavator after inserting reusable steel piling sheets on the sides (similar to digging hi-rise underground car parks. Unlike expensive tunnel boring)
Underground Metro Advantages (light rail):
·        No traffic lights
·         3 times faster to your destination (Metro 100km/hr plus) (safer underground and no traffic lights)
·        Pedestrian safe
·        Car accident safe
·         Quiet for residents along the line (including tens of thousands of hi-rise apartments)
·        Attractive quiet landscaped areas above ground (Great for cafes, shops, residents etc on GC Hwy)
Underground Freeway advantageous:
·        100km/hr proposed speed zone (majority of road)
·        No traffic lights
·        No pedestrians - super safe
·        Safer for cars in one way carriageway
·        More fuel efficient
·        40km/hr proposed zone above ground – cycling & pedestrian friendly
·         Super quiet for residents along the line (including tens of thousands of hi-rise apartments)
·        More area for parking above ground
·        3 times quicker to your destination (see below)
At present to drive from Burleigh to Harbour Town Shopping Centre it can take 52 minutes (see map picture below). Doing 100km/hr = about 12 to 13 minutes = 4 x quicker.
It can take at the moment, from Burleigh to Harbour town, via public transport = 1hr 12 minutes…. that’s ridiculous! The underpass Metro would be 3 x quicker.
To gradually implement this due to budget constraints, the underpass could initially be done in sections, first through Surfers then Burleigh then Broadbeach and continue until all joined/finished over say 10 or 20 years. During transition can divert above the ground in areas where there is minimal traffic lights (i.e. Main Beach GC Hwy etc.).
Initially you could keep using buses. The buses could go down and up through these underpasses quickly (like Brisbane buses do in the CBD etc.) Design the under passes to later enable a superfast Metro system to fit inside (like Europe).
For the cars, design on and off ramps (similar to the M1 ramps) at various locations (i.e. Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Mermaid, Burleigh, Palm Beach etc.).
A giant custom made hydraulic folding formwork machine could easily be made to accelerate the building process.
Do not extend the light rail and waste more Ratepayers money on the slow expensive 140 year old technology that has unattractive rail tracks all over our city that slows traffic down terribly and is dangerous for cars and pedestrians!
Plan and implement now for the long term future, instead of being short sited with this expensive slow old fashion Tram concept!
Lets not be short sited! THINK BIG! THINK LONG TERM! Solve the problems now not later!
EXTRA NOTES:
Solution. Safer. Quieter. Faster. Greener. Major traffic flow ability. Build 100 year plan now. Easy to service services
This is NOT a tunnel that requires an expensive TBM tunnelling boring machine. Simply place sheet pilings down first then quickly dig out sand with escavator and reuse the sheet pilings
The Sydney Opera house car park is 37 metres deep right beside the harbour! This only need to be less than half that.  High rise car parks have been built this way for decades
Both lower levels, divide the 4 lanes into 2 x 2 with supports in the middle to save spanning/building costs. Then can also use other side during maintenance and unlikely accidents. Never be a pedestrian fatality

Another visitor
18th Sept. 2019
We had our third out of town visitors since moving to site.
Dave, ex CiSRA colleague of mine, and Motoko’s, visited with Bradley and Emigine while Kas (wife and mum) competed in the Sunshine Coast 1/2 Ironman over the weekend.
Tumblr media
Was good to catch up with Sydney news and in particular what our past work mates are up to after the company closure.
The kids had a drive of Mr. Mitarai while we had a BBQ and a few refreshments. Dave being a country bumpkin knew the controls.
The dry spell is continuing with weather reminiscent of Sydney in February. That means bushfires and there were outbreaks all round with the closest near Coolum some 15k away. We are pretty safe here but places up and down the street and surrounding areas are pretty bushie; I wouldn’t be too happy with them as home locations.
The dry spell has also put a holt on my driveway excavation simply because of the amount of dust kicked up and the hardness of the dirt. So we have done a few house keeping tasks such as setting up the container as the workshop and storage facility it is meant to be.
Painting the small water tank and the container also kept us busy for a day or two. I borrowed Jamie’s airless spray gun but it kept tripping the electrical circuit so had to revert to the brush. No big issue as time is cheap.
Tumblr media
I’ve also stripped down a water pump that was hidden in the bushes at Jamie’s with a view to use it to water down some of the fill I’m moving around from the driveway. It hadn’t been used for ? long and was an interesting pull down.
The sump and cylinder was filled with an oil water mix, the carby full of dirt, petrol tank full of orange gravy and actual pump impeller full of cottage cheese (or something remarkably similar).
Tumblr media
The two vital signs required, no piston seizure and a spark, were surprisingly present. So fuel was the next required component, but with the tank dirty and carby full of dirt progress stopped. I decided to order a carby service pack on eBay, and was presently surprised to find I could get the following in one service pack for just $30 with free shipping. And note the free cat sticker!
Tumblr media
The pack included: A new spark plug, new air filter, whole new carby (not just jets), fuel lines, plug lead, coil, ignition, gaskets, fuel filter and a stop start switch! How good is that!
We have also decided to put up there shade sails, using the Aldi tarps we used when covering the trailer when moving. I had to order some poles of the required length and get some fittings. This will be a task for next week. We can then both shade the container and park cars under shelter.
I also put some racks on the side of the container to hold the skis; much tidier and they too are out of the sun now.
Tumblr media
We are now waiting for rain, the final test.
We have passed the heat test, van is nice and cool, passed the wind test, annex didn’t blow down on the high wind and fire weekend. We now await the water test! Will our wood chip ground covering get washed away; will the soil soften up and the van subside; will the annex leak? I guess we’ll find out soon or later.
Our Strangler Fig has burst into leaf, making great shade through most of the day. I’m now inclined to keep this tree as a feature in the courtyard. We were considering replacing it with something less foundation unsettling, but will look at preventative measures to tame its roots and keep it.
Tumblr media
Also done: completed the Owner Builder course and have the license; have the preliminary roof structure design for comment. Getting close to being able to submit to council the BA.

How to Move the Eco-friendly Way?
The rising levels of pollution, disturbed food chain, global warming and depleting ozone layer; Mother Earth is constantly under pressure. While scientists across the globe are working hard to study the action and reaction of each human doing, environmentalists are trying to educate people the take the 'timely' corrective action.
Starting on a much lower scale/platform, we all can contribute to saving our earth. As every area, industry, sector or profession impacts the ecosystem in its typical way, steps can be taken to stabilize things.
House moving too affects the environment in a big way. Cartons, boxes, tape rolls, foam pallets, plastic cling wraps, bubble wrap, almost every kind of packing supply is used during packing of household belongings and furniture. And unfortunately, everything is discarded in abundance, disturbing the nature's balance. But a few steps of eco-friendly house moving can help Mother Earth.
Do Not Discard: Packing supplies are crucial for packing goods during relocation. And fortunately, they can be recycled and reused. So instead of buying new materials every time, consider using old newspapers, damaged clothing and torn rugs. Thankfully, reputed house movers in Sydney understand this to the core and recycle and reuse packing     supplies for an eco-friendly move.
Say YES to biodegradable supplies: Unless necessary, try working without plastics. Plastic is a non-biodegradable substance and comes down heavily on nature. Old newspaper, foam pallets are convenient     substitutes.
Stay within Limit: Restrict the use of packing supplies only to the limits required. While some believe that over using packing supplies will bestow more protection to the packed goods, it's certainly not the case. Trained house movers and furniture removalists in Sydney are apt at packing the things right and perfect.
Don't Pack What     You'll Not Use: Do not pack and move the items you are least likely to use. This will not only cut down on the use of packing supplies but also save you unnecessary moving expenditure. Instead, consider organizing a garage sale to earn something out of the discarded stuff.
Comprehensive Moving/ Back Loading: Instead on moving furniture and belongings in parts, consider a one-time comprehensive move. House Movers in Sydney also offer back loading services. Herein the customer pays only for space occupied for a one-sided move, thus cutting down heavily on the moving costs and petrol/diesel emissions.
Compare Cost: In case of interstate removal, compare the cost of moving bulky items with buying new furniture pieces at the destination location. If the moving cost comes out to be more, it's certainly not viable to pack and move.
Opting for an eco-friendly move is the need of the hour. Cheap House Movers understands its role and responsibility towards the environment and offers services that work well with environment protection. The company owns fuel-efficient trucks and is staffed with the best men who are fully trained to pack and move the items in an eco-friendly way. Total Equip is an Australian company that deals with Earth Moving Services Rouse Hill. Not only this, it also focuses on other different services such as Excavation Services Glenorie, Plant Hire Services Sydney, etc. Please visit @www.totalequip.com.au or contact us at 0488 631 657 for more details.

Tumblr media
Modernized pipe relining is one of the less destructive approaches that is widely appreciated by all. This technique certainly means that your existing damaged pipes can be relined and repaired with the help of inspection orifices that are made on the sections of the existing pipes. Post investigation and identification of location, epoxy resins are placed inside the pipes. This forms a new covering and layer concealing the damage from within. No more worries about a rumpled and frenzied excavation that would cost you a fortune. With the contemporary techniques of pipe relining, you can not only save your yard from getting vandalized but also save yourself from getting financially broken! In addition, you can save the environment too. It can be further added that the latest pipe relining is quite effective, efficient and lasting than most can imagine.
Set aside your ego and call the local plumber today!
Plumbing problems can happen anytime. It might be possible that the problems were brewing just under your nose and you failed to notice the signs that your pipes might be under pressure. Ignoring your pipes’ call for help is not a wise decision. They might get you into trouble at your most crucial moment. Leakage in gas pipes can cause serious damage to both health and wealth if not attended in time. Broken or leaking faucets or taps can give you serious injuries! So it is well-advised that you take immediate notice while there is still time to recuperate.
While the internet is flooding with lots of educational videos of “how to fix broken or leaking pipes”, some things are better left with the professionals. Small informative errors can end up in a disaster! Apart from safety risks, you might also end up risking your economy as well. So no matter how tempting it might seem, don’t try to be a hero and call for a local plumber for help! It is only a plumber who can cut down your safety risks as well as your “drain of wealth”! You can get in touch with a number of local plumbers in Sydney who can come down at your rescue by a simple phone call. Don’t wait for your pipes to burst open get help while there is still time.

Welcome to Among Us, ANNIE! SIGRID NEWMAN ( with the faceclaim of MADDIE HASSON ) has found shelter in CAMP JUPITER, where we hope SHE will fit in nicely. Please make sure to check the “after applying” section of our navigation here!
It really made us happy to see an application for a roman character -- and a beautiful daughter of Vulcan, at that! Her fire manipulation ability is a good take on what powers children of Vulcan (or Hephaestus) could have, without stepping into Sue-ish territory, as full-on pyrokinesis is canonically rare. It was refreshing to read about her struggles to reach Camp Jupiter: we haven’t seen much about the Wolf House and Lupa so far, when it's an important part of a roman demigod’s journey. The para was also a delight to read, in spite of (maybe even thanks to?) its incredible length. You are a strong writer and we can’t wait to see Sigrid on the dash!
(We went with Maddie Hasson since she was the first one you suggested, but if you’d rather go with Scarlett then you’re free to choose her too. )
TW: blood, graphic descriptions of violence and mentions of animal death under the cut.
AND YOU ARE…?
What is your full name, and when were you born?
“My name’s Sigrid May Nord Newman. I was born on March 21, 1995 so I’m twenty-two years old.” It doesn’t take that much of an effort, not when the daughter of Vulcan has been trained to respond to similar questions with eloquence, grace and respect. However, this interview is not like any other. There’s no need for formalities but rather, Sigrid is sharing so much more than she’s used to. What she has come to understand is that there is someone on the inside: a threat to people like her. This interview is important, it must be if Sigrid can feel numb in her anxiety. The girl folds her hands on her lap, an occasional curl of her lips appearing. She smiles back at the interviewer.
Have you been claimed, or do you belong to a legacy? If yes, state your godly parent / heritage.
The words ‘claimed’ and ‘legacy’ are familiar to her ears, only because she’s been exposed to this side of the world for longer than a year. This leaves an indescribable taste in her mouth – it’s neither bitter nor sweet, but it’s the kind that leads her into thinking about what it must be to be neither of these things… to be normal, to not be responsible for a disaster. Ever since she found out about the truth of her parentage, her whole life has been somewhat similar to that of hell ( if she can imagine what it must look like ). The look on her face doesn’t betray these thoughts but her pause — this long, awkward pause — does. “My father is Vulcan, the Roman equivalent of the god Hephaestus. The god of fire and metalworking, all that cool stuff.” Sigrid has yet to learn the myths: of how godhood works, how to survive when your scent leads numbers of monsters after her every step. “I have been claimed.” There’s that taste again; Sigrid doesn’t like remembering how she was claimed. It stings her eyes to remember the destruction. “I fought off this large beast on my way to the Wolf House —” The wolf goddess’s image comes to mind and Sigrid flinches; she has a scar of a bite mark on her left shoulder blade to remember her by. “My father sent me there a few days after I turned eighteen. Here I am, almost four years later.”
Where are you currently based? Are you attending a Camp (Half-Blood / Jupiter), or are you living full-time in New Athens / New Rome? Is it a combination of both?
“I was in New Rome for a week or so, just to get settled down and get a feel of the place.” She stops to push her hair back as a way to control the anxiety that comes with being asked so many questions at once. Agencies in which she spent a childhood in didn’t teach her how to handle things like that, but her mother ( may the gods bless her, wherever she is ) attempted to. “I decided to stay in Camp Jupiter full-time afterwards, when I realized that I needed to do more than I thought I was capable of.” Her choice is determined by her lack of tenacity and skill in terms of combat — that was it. Sigrid felt dissatisfied about herself, despite the encouraging words of the wolf goddess who pushed her far beyond her limits. The daughter of Vulcan has spent a long time walking down the runway, but not enough of that time has ever been given to understanding how to escape trouble. “I thought that I could train more since I’ve never been taught how to before Lupa, and help train others too. I’m a lot more interested in that more than studying, really.”
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? ( If you’re applying for a canon character, are you diverging from book-canon? If so, how?)
“Sure, why not.” The Roman demigod shrugs. There is, of course, a re-emerging anxiety that stems from the fact that Sigrid Newman has been in the eyes of many since sixteen. Experienced as she is in the career that she found herself pursuing, having people’s eyes on her has always brought her fear… A fear of disappointment and in this case, she feels as though she might disappoint the interviewer — whoever they may be and if they had an inkling of an interest in her personal life. “I’m a model. I started doing it when I was sixteen when I was scouted at the supermarket with my mom. Ever since then, she’s been my manager and my biggest supporter — even when my step-dad came in the picture.” Sigrid doesn’t speak so often about her family, knowing that most people aren’t interested in it. Yet she speaks of them fondly, seeing as they have been the only people there for her in the longest time. “My step-dad’s really into excavating old, dead things. He’s an archaeologist and he used to take me places with him as a child.” What else did they want to know? What else was there for her to say? Sigrid raises a brow, “Right… you probably want to know more about me. I — I can kind of manipulate fire… not like, create it. Think more of, what’s his name, Pyro from the X-Men series. I can still be burned alive.” The daughter of Vulcan is not one to admit her weaknesses and she hopes to her godly father that it would never be used against her.
What were you doing prior to The Recall?
The trip — one that Sigrid has promised her mother days before, promising her that she will make time to be able to go with her. The Australian summer heat can be felt on her skin as she thinks of the moments that she spent in the continent ; her Scandinavian roots making themselves known when she recalls the following days after Sydney, ecstatic to be remembered. “I was on this trip with my mom, visiting some of our family in Australia and Sweden, and answering some modeling calls as well.” Sigrid remembers quite enough to answer the interviewer’s question. “I’ve been in Camp Jupiter for over a year by then, I was already a legionnaire. Approximately two years in the fourth cohort already. Then I decided to take a leave for two – three? – weeks. I came back, right before The Recall. It caught me off guard, really.” She laughs amicably, as if attempting to create a connection between herself and this stranger of an interviewer. Yet she’s quick to revert back to a persona taut with professionalism once the other nods, and Sigrid realizes that it’s over.
SHOWTIME!
Her lip is split open, blood trickling to her chin. There are bruises and cuts everywhere — things that, if her mother had seen her now, would elicit a shriek and a week’s worth of coddling. Hazel eyes look up at the stature of a woman ; seven feet tall with her hard stare and clenched jaw, looking down on her. Sigrid can feel a tear attempting to escape. “Do you want to get out of here alive? Are you trying?”
“Yes —” She almost yells ; there’s a frustration that’s been building since her first test in her voice. “I have been trying. I AM trying —” Sigrid wants to complain but Lupa doesn’t take kindly to the weak ; she learned this in the first days that she found herself in the goddess’s midst. Her eyes continuously avert from her face to the weapon lying a few feet away from where she just fell. “Let me try again.”
“There are no second chances out there in the real world, Sigrid.” Finality… that is all she hears in those words. The beat of her heart almost syncs with the following words, repeated over and over again to remind her of how to survive as a child of a god. “Conquer or die.” Sigrid repeats this. Sigrid repeats the words and it becomes a mantra ; Sigrid repeats the words as she picks up the weapon lying on the concrete floor. Celestial bronze sword, almost bent out of shape from how many times it’s been used against a larger, stronger monster.
It snarls at her viciously — Sigrid can’t understand why Lupa would put her own wolf against her, but she clenches her fist tighter around the handle of the sword. In a flash, the newly claimed daughter of Vulcan sprints outside of the crumbling walls of the House. She hears the panting of the animal right after her and turns around swiftly, her blade slashing at the wolf but not deep enough to cut. The girl swears under her breath and she keeps running. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees it and it leaps — it leaps over her shoulder and Sigrid’s heart jumps and she stops. The sound of pebbles crunching under her feet is loud… louder than she suspects as she lunges at the same time the animal does — Sigrid’s eyes widen as she sees the end of the sword out the other side of its body. Her hand lets go of the weapon, Sigrid falling to her side with a loud thud. Out of her pocket falls a lighter.
A LIGHTER, out of all the things in the world. The whimper of the wolf after her is audible… they’re not that far from one another. Sigrid’s hair falls in her eyes, face wet from the tears that have managed roll down her cheeks between the seconds of her running and the wolf whimpering. Thin and careful hands ; not those of a builder ( Sigrid Newman is not a builder but she has never tried, not yet ) ; reach out for that same lighter and ignites the same flicker of fire that her eyes once reflected the nights before she found out the truth of her parentage. Sigrid is not the daughter of a woman and her archaeologist husband, but the daughter of an abandoned lover and the god of fire. The daughter of Vulcan curls her hand and the flames almost obey — they almost obey, long enough for her to direct it towards the animal.
Sigrid always sees her life flash before her eyes in the short seconds that her hands command the fire. She sees herself at the age of five, wondering why her mother had always kept her inside as if the outside world was plotting against them. She sees herself at ten with her night terrors — every night, Sigrid finds herself falling from the highest mountain tops ; she wakes up sweating, panting and screeching for her mom. She sees herself at fourteen, with the itch in her hands to rip apart things only for her to never truly know how to put them back together — Sigrid is good at that, she always has been. She sees herself at seventeen, walking down the runway with a façade and a small voice in her head saying, ‘They must look at you now and wonder if you’re truly a child of the god thrown out of Olympus for his imperfections’.
The smell of burnt flesh is what she recognizes upon falling on her back, the sound almost ear-splitting as she reconsiders if she has broken a bone or two. Sigrid’s energy is diminishing but she still hears the soft pitter-patter of paws… it’s approaching slowly, but its menace isn’t so cut-clear. This isn’t the same wolf that she had just, assuming for herself, burnt to death. It’s different ; she can hear it in its walk. The girl heaves — she’s taking in as much air as possible, trying not to die. Before she fully passes out, she hears the voice of a goddess whose title is far from both mentor and enemy: “Tomorrow. At dawn.”
She feels teeth, sharp, dig into her left shoulder and slowly drag her — to where? Sigrid doesn’t know. Her vision goes black before she can form a question, much less a word.S
he wakes up in the same spot as she did days ago with dried blood on her shirt, hair covering half her face and burn marks — fresh — on her forearm.

A Sad Month :(
Dec. 6, 2019
Well the last few weeks have seen some sad news.
Firstly my uncle (Dad’s brother) Alan Carlyle passed away, and we attended his funeral in Wingham (near Taree), with his family.   A sad lose, a fine man and a gentlemen.
We did take the opportunity to keep travelling south, despite the fires and Beijing like air quality, to catch up with family and friends.  I must say we both didn't miss Sydney and the traffic, confirming our move north was the right one.
The second sadness was just this week when our new neighbour, 85 yr old Frank (the Austrian) passed away also, after a fall in his house which he didn’t recover from. Frank was a great asset to our new life here, full of knowledge and experience in all facets of living and readily volunteering to help, even when not asked :).  It’s a shock to us all, and his funeral next week will be a sad occasion.  This will also mean some time down the track we’ll be getting new neighbours; let’s hope our Qld luck holds and we have nice new ones.
Ok, so much for the sad news,
Biggest positive news: we received the Engineer’s plans for the foundations and roof structure.  These were passed to the architect for marrying to his plans, preparation of a plumbing plan and then we can settle on a Certifier for BA lodgement.
I must say I was a bit surprised with the complexity of the foundation design which will add cost, time and effort.  As the solution has piers and beams under the slab we’ll now require boring of theses piers, adding a lot more concrete and reo, and building forms for the beams which will pass across the pier tops.
With so many piers, and all the concrete to fill them will add to the build cost.
Other things we’ve done:
- Moved the front gate, and changed the swing direction.  This now gives more usable access.  Also I have started to create a path from the gate down to where the front door will be, so folks parking on the street have a visual guide to the best way down to where we are.
- Not sure if I mentioned this last time, but as we haven't started digging final footings we did take the opportunity to move the building footprint back 5 metres towards the street.  This relatively slight change will allow a wider field-of-view to the north over the creek and hill opposite.  As we had the building footprint marked out, the position of the house did appear to be more into the middle of the block than what feels ideal.
However consequences were:
- more digging and stockpiling of dirt;
- a relocation of the underground power cable as it was exposed as a result of the new setback. I’ve now stopped any further excavation as I feel I’m pushing the envelope regarding what you can do before BA approval.  Don’t want to start the process with a hand slap or fine from council.
With the trip away, Motoko not well for a week, the unseasonable hot weather and getting close to BA submission I have been a bit constrained on what to do.
BTW I did get a ride on mower, as the grass does need mowing almost weekly, and a cement mixer which will be put to use firstly on the path.
Regards.

Text description provided by the architects. The history of the single-family house in Sydney during the last century is one that fuses an evolving approach to our relationship with the landscape with a history of experimentation in residential house design. These two strands have come together most memorably in the occupation of the steep and often spectacular landscapes around the inner harbour and the modes of habitation made possible in the way these houses relate to their site and Sydney’s benign climate.
This project is sited in one of these classic Sydney contexts, Castle Cove, where steep ravines contain tributaries that flow through angophora bushland down to the harbour. The sandstone geology is omnipresent and takes many forms, from mighty escarpments to minor ripples in the bedrock. These landscape tectonics inform the design, where a concrete shell of irregular geometry steps around outcrops and contours, creating an indeterminate form that is distinctively new but also could equally be a strange object ‘unearthed’ in excavation. Either way, the concrete element reverberates with the site geometry while forming a built escarpment that provides a plateau for habitation.
The concrete escarpment is roofed in a zinc membrane that folds over to form a smaller pocket to the rear containing private rooms. Both materials will patinate over time, moving again from a “new” to “pre-existing” form. The infrastructural nature of this primary gesture has in its counterpoint the means of occupying the house through a series of crafted timber linings that enableoccupation of this concrete landscape with a spirit and glamour reminiscent of the California’s mid-century houses by John Lautner and others. The resulting interior spaces connect inhabitants with the monumental and wonderous nature of the landscape yet still provide intimate moments for occupation that are so necessary for everyday life.
These linings are further embellished with a number of steel, brass and mirror inserts that are like devices or instruments that start in the practical requirements of occupation, given their basis in linings, benches, windows and skylights. The common thread through each instrument is the further diffusion of the concrete container both physically (in fissures and pockets that increase its porosity) and perceptually (through mirrors, skylights passing through all levels, openings that limit acoustic privacy) that serve to mentally expand the scale of the building. In every case, the instruments serve to intensify the relation between occupants and landscape so directly established by the primary concrete form.
This strong connection to place has also led to passive house strategies embedded in and intertwined through the form of the structure. The basement acts as a cold sink that allows for cool air to be constantly drawn through the main living spaces via floor vents and operable skylights purposely tilted north to draw heat and assist in the convection process. Combined with cross ventilation, generous overhangs, thermal mass, double glazing with internal and external blinds and a hydronic under floor heating system these passive strategies have produced a thermally stable environment for the occupants that requires little active power consumption.
