An: Thank you so much for the request and happy holidays if you celebrate!!!! So sorry for the wait but I thought this would make an amazing holiday special :) I’m sure we’ve all had experiences with family holiday parties, and this in part is inspired by my own whacky extended family! One of my friends suggested that I look to the film Four Christmases (2008) for an idea of what Johnny’s family may be like, so I’m sure you can see some of the inspiration there XD Anyway, thank you for the request and please keep them coming!
As you walked up to the front door from where your taxi dropped you off, the snow was painted rainbow colors from the bright Christmas lights strung about the house as powder crunched under your feet. Breathing puffs of hot air on your hands, you cursed yourself for not wearing gloves as you rang the doorbell. Oh, but it was all worth it when you saw Johnny running to the door like he was a kid on Christmas morning, all smiles. Throwing the screen door hard enough to nearly break it, he practically tackled you into the snow when he hugged you, burying you in the warmth of his arms, “Y/N, honey! M’so great to see you!”
He showed you inside the house- tiny, but god, was it packed. The place radiated this human warmth, the air swimming with smells of festive spices that made you practically drool. Holding your frigid hand in his, Johnny led you to the kitchen where those wonderful smells were coming from. As you squeezed past the people clustered in the front hall, Johnny gave you the rundown on a few notable characters you wiggled past, “Oh! That’s Aunt Dotty- her girl does pageants, Earl over there’s gotta taxidermy gig on the side, and Maureen’s the proud mom’a those five little maniacs out back playin’ with the ax.”
As the two of you stopped in the doorway, you ogled the heavenly spread of food on the table as your boyfriend called to a woman who stood at the stove, “Hey, mama!” She turned around and Johnny nudged you towards her a little, sounding so proud as he showed you off excitedly, “This is Y/N!” She turned away from the pots and her face just lit up, walking over to you and giving you one of those heart melting mom hugs, “Oh, my PJ’s finally gotta girl! I’m so happy’t meet you, sweetheart!” You were initially a little supprised- you weren't used to this kind of touchy-feely southern hospitality, but strangely enough, it didn't feel weird. It was actually pretty nice. Pulling back, she smiled teasingly as she noticed that look in your eyes, “What’s the matter? You're lookin’ like you haven't eaten all day!”
“That’s not it- I’ve just never seen that much food before. It’s just…wow.” The most your family ever did was maybe a turkey, nothing like the banquet this miracle woman had prepared. Johnny could’ve sworn he saw you drool a little. He chuckled, charmed at how enamored you seemed by something so basic to him, a grin spreading across his face as he handed you a plate, “C’mon, fill up, girlie!”
There were people sitting just about everywhere in the living room. Little kids clustered on the beige carpet around the Christmas tree with toy cars and dolls, parents and grandparents all had seats on the floral upholstered furniture talking sports or politics or whatever, leaving you and the adult children to fit in wherever you could. You and Johnny shared the seat in front of the oak piano at one end of the room with a couple other people sitting on the closed lid of the piano itself, all drinking and sharing stories together like a scene right out of one of those hallmark movies, only maybe a little less conventional.
“So that’s why m’cousin Dusty’s not allowed to show off his ‘talent’ at family gatherings anymore.” Johnny chuckled, taking a bite of his sweet potato casserole as the room buzzed with laughter. It was a wonder how he could make even the grossest subjects hilarious. Even you couldn’t keep from cracking up, placing your plate on the coffee table, “Hey, speaking of, d’ya know where the bathroom is?” Standing up, Johnny gestured for you to follow him, stepping carefully around people.
He led you down a dim hallway stopping in front of a wall when his eye caught something, “Hey, check this out.” Johnny took a picture off of a nail on the wall and handed it to you. Through the darkness, you could make out most of the general features. It was your boyfriend and he looked pretty young in the photo, maybe around high school age, but god, it was awful. “You actually had a mullet?” He broke out into snickers and you quickly followed as he tried to stabilize himself against the wall, his voice shaking from laughter, “I mean, business in the front, party in the back- It was nineteen eighty nine!” Once one of you caught your breath, your eyes would inevitably drift down to that damn photo and you would succumb yet again, the two of you laughing there until you had tears running down your faces.
Aunt Lynn excitedly passed you a tray of horderves- Ritz crackers with spray cheese on top- as you sat back down, “Oh, honey! You’re just in time!” Confused, you looked up to your boyfriend when he stood up with this little glin of anticipation in his eye as the people sitting in the center of the room cleared out, pushing away furniture to form a circle. A freckle faced kid at your feet took a cracker himself, making weird eye contact with you as he licked the cheese right off. Pushing aside all speculation, you shoved your cracker into your mouth. Not half bad.
Johnny stood with his stance wide and low at one end of the circle, starting up some friendly trash talk, “Hey, how’d your last tour go, Rodge?” Johnny’s cousin Rodger, the one that was a country musician, glared at him from the opposite side, “Yeah? Why don’t we talk about that last movie y’did?” Your boyfriend’s eye twitched and in an instant he was on him and the two started fighting like animals. Johnny had his hands around the other man’s neck as he swung his long legs up to try and pin him but his weight wasn’t enough leverage to take Rodger down. The whole room roared as a scene straight out of a backyard wrestling tape played out when Johnny was slammed onto the carpet, landing on his back hard enough to knock the wind out of him. On the side, someone started a count and Rodger leaned back, grinning as he held him down, “I think you lost your edge, Holl’awood.” Just as quickly, your boyfriend gasped, catching his breath with an exhausted smile. He slipped to one side and lunged forward with gritted teeth, throwing him into a headlock, “No way! You’re goin’ down, hoss.”
They went at it for maybe ten minutes and even you couldn’t help yourself from getting caught up in all the excitement, cheering and whooping with the rest of his family. “Ah! Uncle! Uncle!” Panting, Johnny tapped the ground next to him as a plea for mercy. You should’ve known- your boyfriend had a physique comparable to Gumby. Rodge pulled away with a smirk on his face, giving him a playful shove, “Always knew y’were a pussy, cuz. Love ya.” It was an oddly sweet moment between the two of them, even as Johnny sat up, coughing a little with a faint smile on his face as he got in one last jab, “Beatin’ me don’t mean shit. S’like beating a girl!”
And the night went on, with just as much laughing and drinking and bad behavior, but once midnight rolled around, people started peeling off. Johnny spent the later part of the evening clinging to your side, surprisingly sappy as he begged you to stay a while longer, “D’aww, c’mon…just one night won’t hurt.” Maybe you were more tipsy than you thought, judging from how nice that idea sounded. Sipping your rum punch- the one you got out of the big bowl with the ice ring of fruit- you giggled, laying your head on his shoulder,“I can’t…I gotta be at work t’morow!” You never knew your boyfriend to be a sentimental drunk but maybe coming home flipped some switch in him. Either that or you.
Johnny followed you like a lost dog as you got up to get your coat on, squeezing past the people trickling out the door, “But’cha gotta promise to call me, okay?” The headlights on the taxi you called shined bright in the darkness as it sat parked outside. You slipped your shoes on, “I promise!” As you were about to leave, someone stopped you in the doorway with a tap on your shoulder. It was of Johnny’s cousins. He grinned, pointing upward at the sprig of mistletoe hung above you, “Hey, mistletoe. You know what that means!”
“Yeah.” Your boyfriend chuckled, shoving him out of the way. Johnny looked down at you lovingly, wrapping his arms around you, his voice low as he nearly whispered an inch from your face, “I know exactly what that means.” Pulling you close, he dipped you, giving you a kiss like a soldier who just came back after the war. You didn’t even notice the cold that nipped at your skin as the onlookers inside whooped and hollered at the spectacle Johnny was putting on, kissing you with fervor, only pulling away an inch or two to catch his breath, the warm air between you turning into little puffs of white smoke as it began to snow.

Fernando Campana (1961 – 2022)
Born in the rural town of Brotas, the São Paolo-based designer earned a degree in architecture from the Faculdade de Belas Artes de São Paolo in 1984, before creating Estudio Campana that same year with his older brother Humberto, an attorney.
During the 1980s the studio produced a series of sculptural metal chairs welded from iron called Desconfortáveis (Uncomfortables), eventually moving toward a practice using everyday materials like cardboard, rope, wicker, bamboo, and wood.  Their iconic Favela Chair, from 1991 was fabricated with scraps of wood from discarded fruit crates, nailed and glued by hand. “The people who live in favelas construct their own homes, so I thought, why not construct a chair myself,” said Fernando in a discussion about the seat with curator Darrin Alfred from a 2010 interview. It was, he explained at the time, meant to symbolize a Brazilian shantytown.
It was in the 1990s—a time when the design world was primarily focused on the post-World War II movement of the Italians—that the Campanas came on the scene, with work that underscored Brazilian culture and its craft, sculpting furnishings from a range of raw and found materials. Their 1993 Vermelha Chair was a lesson in resourcefulness, hand-woven from cotton rope that enveloped a metal frame.
Design journalist Arlene Hirst was “gobsmacked” when she first encountered the chair, manufactured by Italian manufacturer Edra, at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. A year later the chair was included in Project 66: Campana Brothers/Ingo Maurer, a 1998 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), curated by Paola Antonelli, the museum’s senior curator of architecture and design, an associate at the time. For this show, Antonelli paired the Brazilian brothers’ furniture with German lighting designer Ingo Maurer’s luminaires in vignettes that highlighted a shared passion for materiality and invention.
Both Fernando and Humberto were active in the production process as well, but as is often the case with partners, they remained elusive about specific roles. “Fernando had the training, so he was the more pragmatic one,” noted Antonelli in a recent interview, referring to his architectural roots. “He never discussed it. And I never questioned it. It was implied,” she said. The younger Campana also drew inspiration from his daily routines, local markets and wandering São Paolo’s streets. Antonelli recalled asking him about his use of found objects, asking if they weren’t too cute? His response, “They are not too cute. They are part of my life.”
Many of those found objects—including stuffed animals—made their way onto upholstered seating like the 2002 Banquete series, which became the equivalent of a sold-out Broadway show. It is still produced out of the Campana São Paolo studio, and handsewn by local craftspeople who are considered part of the extended Campana family.
In 2010 the New York- and L.A.-based gallery Friedman Benda began global representation of the brother’s work. “Campana Studio brought a completely fresh perspective, creating a dialogue with local crafts and the use of the readymade,” says co-founder Marc Benda, adding, “They were trailblazers.” The gallery assisted with support of the studio and helped them to balance the commercial success of their practice with its roots in the hand made.
One of the brothers’ last collaborations—presented in June at the 2022 Salone in Milan—is a collection called Metamorfosi, comprising five large-scale, pouf seats and a tapestry, created in collaboration with Italian textile designer Paola Lenti. Woven from remnants Lenti sorted and saved with CouLture Migrante, a social tailoring atelier (involving men and women asylum seekers residing in Como, Italy) the limited-edition pieces make their North American debut at Design Miami in December.
The work of Estudio Campana can be found at the Vitra Design Museum, Centre Pompidou, Musée Des Arts Décoratifs, MoMA, among other design-focused institutions. In 2020, they were the subject of 35 Revolutions, a retrospective at Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro on the occasion of their 35th anniversary.

Study Geralt/Vilgefortz Explicit dub-con, d/s, blow jobs, body worship, implied non-consensual mindreading, Vilgefortz is a creepyfuck ~1200w Vaguely implied to be set at Thanedd.
The witcher was not an obsession. He was merely an object to research, a tool for Vilgefortz to understand and eventually use. His first proposition to Geralt of an alliance had been dismissed out of hand, and Vilgefortz needed to try a something else before the banquet was over. It was going to be an obvious gambit, but one that he was sure he’d learn from.
Vilgefortz followed Geralt who had found refuge in a study room away from the main hall. He lingered in the doorway, holding a bottle of wine and quietly observing the witcher.
Geralt inspected a row of restless portraits who scrutinized him right back, shifting uncomfortably in the frame of the painting and frowning at him. Geralt moved on and scanned the spines of a near-empty bookshelf, barely glanced at the fireplace or stained glass window, and examined the wrought iron of the scones. He took in the entirety of the room, probably feeling for the charm that had activated and lit the fireplace and all of the sconces and stirred the paintings when he stepped over the threshold.
Geralt exhaled loudly and looked over his shoulder at Vilgefortz. “You brought more drink.”
“But of course,” he said, smiling assiduously, and brought Geralt the offering. He topped off both their cups and Geralt took a drink before Vilgefortz had finished pouring for himself.
Vilgefortz ran his finger along the rim of his cup, knowing his words and intent meant little to a man who was famous for his neutrality. Vilgeortz gestured at the upholstered chair behind Geralt, nestled into the corner of the room with two side tables and a view of the sea. The chair was large and comfortable enough to spend hours pouring through manuscripts and journals.
Geralt ignored the invitation to sit down. It would be easy enough to compel him to move with a little bit of magic, but Vilgefortz wanted to know how Geralt would react without that kind of order.
He stepped close to Geralt, taking another drink of his wine and letting his hand settle on Geralt’s hip.
Geralt exhaled, neither stiffening or pushing him away and took another gulp of his wine. Even in the warmth of the firelight, Geralt’s skin was pale and his eyes were tired. A brief pass over the unshielded mind gave Vilgefortz impressions of Yennefer and Geralt’s longing for a quiet, uncomplicated life away from mages and the madness of civilization.
“This isn’t going to make me agree to whatever terms you’re trying to sell,” Geralt said.
“You’ve made that abundantly clear. No, this is merely performing the duties of a host,” Vilgefortz said.
“Duties that include my cock?” Geralt asked.
“Oh, come now, I wouldn’t take witchers to be so prudish. It’s your first time at a convocation, isn’t it?”
“Unfortunately,” Geralt muttered into his cup and took another drink.
“It’s customary to enjoy liaisons during such a gathering. You must enjoy a moment of respite. No strings attached,” he said and chuckled, tugging the hem of Geralt’s shirt free and letting his snake beneath the linen.
Geralt peered down at him, his face largely impassive, but his fingers tightened around the cup of wine.
Vilgefortz wallowed in the absence of Geralt’s words, his fingers skimming across the divots and patchwork of scars along Geralt’s stomach, circling his navel with an idle curiosity. He desperately wanted to push, to pull, and even flay the witcher alive, see if he could get a whiff of the mutagens that coursed through his body. Maybe even a retain sample of his semen, even though it was common knowledge that witchers were sterile. There could be knowledge to discover for those who were willing to do what was necessary.
Vilgefortz would be patient, even if he wouldn’t get everything he needed tonight. He would take what he could.
He kissed Geralt slowly, testing the waters, and Geralt sank into his mouth like he was born to yield. A thrill surged through Vilgefortz when he finally broke the kiss and Geralt licked his lips, staring at Vilgefortz’s mouth.
He palmed Geralt’s cock through his trousers, surprised to discover the inane songs about the witcher’s cock might actually hold some merit.
Geralt stepped backwards until he sat down in the chair. Vilgefortz deposited their cups on the table and began pushing Geralt’s shirt up, giving him his first look at the mottled scars that his fingers had been mapping. He was an impressive, battle-hardened sight that Vilgefortz touched with a clinical reverence.
He finally kneeled between Geralt’s thighs, pulling on the laces until Geralt lifted his hips and Vilgefortz freed his cock. The heat pooled in his gut, his own trousers growing too tight and uncomfortable, but Vilgefortz ignored the urge to touch himself, wanting to focus his attention solely on Geralt.
He ran his hands along Geralt’s legs, thinking about the power that carried Geralt through innumerable fights with monsters and men. How many times had the witcher nearly bled out fighting some kind of common beast or ancient creature, for nothing but coin and peasant’s revulsion. And yet he remained alive, against all the odds.
Vilgefortz kissed his way up Geralt’s thigh until mouthed at his balls and pressed his nose into Geralt’s pubic hair, inhaling deeply, taking in the musky scent. Geralt’s hands landed on Vilgefortz’s shoulders, cupping him with a gentleness that Vilgefortz continued to distantly catalogue.
He licked up the shaft and began taking Geralt into his mouth. Geralt groaned, tipping his head back against the chair. Vilgefortz relished at the way Geralt melted into the simple touch like any man.
He took as much of Geralt as he could into his mouth, unprepared for the largess. Vilgefortz hollowed his cheeks and sucked, falling into his enthusiasm more than he expected. Geralt was so thick and heavy against his tongue and Vilgefortz lost himself to the taste of salt and precome and the ragged breaths. His desire to separate fact from fiction with regards to witcher stamina made Vilgefortz even harder.
“Mages,” Geralt rasped. Vilgefortz paused, amused by the annoyed incredulity he packed into the word. Vilgefortz pulled off Geralt’s cock and licked his lips.
“What’s that now?” Vilgefortz asked. Geralt gestured to the right.
Vilgefortz glanced across the room. The subjects of the portraits were practically leaning out of the frame to get a better view of them. Every canvas mage leered, their eyes bright and burning with lust, some with their mouths parted and others whose wrists kept disappearing in and out of the frame. The dark brushstrokes and crisp veins of Chaos embedded in the oil paint gave the old, uninspired codgers a vitality they probably never had while they were alive. Vilgefortz looked back to Geralt, pressing a chuckle to his skin.
“Always fucking for an audience. What is it with your kind and voyeurism?” Geralt asked.
“Can’t help but appreciate a good show,” Vilgefortz admitted and resumed stroking Geralt’s cock quickly took him back into his mouth.
Vilgefortz chased his research, annotating Geralt’s every grunt, every clench of fingers, steadfastly controlling his own hunger. He sucked and swallowed the pulsating heat of the witcher’s pleasure, scraping free all the pertinent details of the Lion Cub of Cintra he could find from Geralt’s lust-drunk mind.
The seed burned in his throat and gut, and Vilgefortz squeezed Geralt’s thighs, reeling from headiness of Geralt’s cock and the not so-distant memories of a princess who was neither dead nor missing. The taste of power and knowledge ignited a deep reservoir of arousal within Vilgefortz’s soul, and he licked the taste of Geralt from his lips, intrigued to learn as much as he could.

The Evolution of Sofas: A Brief of this Iconic Furniture Piece
Sofas are an integral part of our living room furniture and have been around for centuries. From their humble beginnings as simple benches to the luxurious and stylish pieces we know today, the evolution of sofas is a fascinating journey.
Tumblr media
One of the earliest recorded uses of sofas was by the ancient Egyptians, who used them in their tombs and temples. They were also popular among the Greeks and Romans, who used them as seating during banquets and other social events. It wasn't until the Renaissance period that the sofa became a symbol of wealth and status, with the royal family furniture of Italy and France featuring ornate and opulent designs.
In the 18th century, the popularity of the sofa spread throughout Europe, with the introduction of the first upholstered sofas. These early versions were usually covered in leather or fabric and were designed for comfort as well as style. The Victorian era saw the rise of the green velvet sofa, which became a staple in many homes and social settings.
Today, sofas come in a wide range of styles and materials, from leather sofas to fabric sofas and everything in between. The green velvet sofa has made a comeback in recent years, with many designers incorporating it into their modern designs.
Whether you prefer a classic or contemporary look, there is a sofa out there to suit your taste and style. So, next time you're shopping for living room furniture, take a moment to appreciate the history and evolution of this iconic furniture piece - the sofa.

How to Find High Quality Furniture ?
When buying new furniture, anyone is faced with the same choice: do you go for something fast, cheap, and easy? Or something expensive that will be more durable? It can click here to learn more be tempting to choose something inexpensive in the moment, as you may want something as quickly as possible.
Types of Wood
There are different types of wood that can be used to make furniture. Ash, mahogany, oak, and walnut are just some of the most popular types of wood used in modern furniture. Furniture can either be solid wood or veneer, meaning less expensive wood is covered in a solid wood finish. Equal these options are used in high quality modern furniture and are typically durable and long lasting.
Watch Out for Particle Board
Particle board is another type of material used as a base for a lot of modern furniture. These is typically used in cheaper furniture, as it won't stand up to heavy use over a long period of time. This is made from an combination of wood pulp, plastics, and resin – not as solid or durable as solid wood or veneers. It's not typically used in high quality modern furniture.
Cushions and Upholstery
Depending on the type of furniture you're buying, you should check if the cushions can easily be removed from the upholstery. For thing likes armchairs, dining chairs, and even couches, you should be able to easily remove the cushion covers from the foam or down. Although this may seem like a small feature, it will mean way less of a headache in the future should you need to wash the covers or want to change their colour or material. Low quality furniture typically doesn't come with this option.
Glue, Nails, Screws, and Joints
There are many ways that furniture can be put together. Wood joinery, where notches are cut into wood pieces and fit together, and certain types of screws are often used by high quality furniture manufacturers to reduce the risk of cracking and sagging in furniture after long term use. Things like staples and nails are less desirable (depending on their location and function). Though you can visibly see adhesive like glue holding parts of the furniture together, this usually indicates lower quality furniture. You shouldn't be able to easily see any materials used to hold the furniture together, let alone if it's simple glue. Your furniture probably won't last very long!
Knots
Knots are natural in solid wood how ever, they are also the areas of the tree that are weaker than the rest. If your furniture, such as a table, has a lot of knots visible, it means that the wood is weaker than it would be if there were less knots. That is why much high-quality furniture manufacturers shy away from using pine, typically a very knotty wood. Make sure you check the base of your furniture for knots and if you see more than a few, it may not be high quality!
Seat Foam
Find out what the density of the foam is. The Upholstered furniture should have a seat foam density rating of at least 1.8 pounds or higher. Though the chair or sofa has removable seat cushions, unzip them and take a look inside as well to check for internal compartments in the foam that will stop it from settling.

Waxing lyrical
Tumblr media
They found their hostess in her cups, a foul mood, and a cushioned seat facing the hearth. She was staring deep into the flames that crackled in the grate, as if transfixed by their unearthly dance, a sight that echoed in the other fires throughout the room; there was nary a wall without one, braziers and torches lining its many sides, projecting the illusion of a chamber half alight.
More chairs were arrayed in a rough arc around the one she'd chosen for her evening throne. It seemed more comfortable than that she sat during the day, upholstered not to raise her up but bring her gently down, and they chose the seats to either side. On gladder days, this would be the room to which she retired after a grand feast in the banqueting hall, to better entertain selected guests, but the sour look on her face confirmed there would be little entertainment here tonight.
"The fire suits you, my lady," the first knight dared. For all that they were calculated flattery, he found his words to be the truth. The lines of her long years had vanished in the dancing of the flames, her faded skin enlivened by their lustrous golden glow.
"As it does you," she replied, most unexpectedly. "All men appear more comely by candlelight. It softens their rough edges, and warms the chill within their eyes."
"You are too kind."
"Perhaps." She studied them again, as if for the first time. Both men found themselves adjusting their posture, sitting tall with chests pushed out and heads held high, not wanting to be found lacking. It seemed they met with her approval, for she continued. "Have you ever watched a city burn?"
That deflated them slightly, and they shook their heads. The knights had come here looking to curry favour, each keenly ambitious and aware of the vacancy in her household retinue. She had given them hope, in extending them this invitation to rest here as her guests, but then dashed it with her surly, taciturn welcome. Now she'd chosen this for a topic of conversion. They had to assume that it was all some sort of test.
"It's a curious thing," she said. "The people melt, run together, long before the flames reach out to lick their flesh. They lose their individuality, you see: aggregating into one combined flow of humanity, a molten substance that has no regard for its constituent parts."
"You speak as one who has witnessed such a tragedy."
"I have but twice." The lady nodded gravely, and listed both occasions with her head still bowed, as still in the shadow of their mourning. "I arrived in Vantalin on the eve of the Great Fire. We were due to dine at the castle that night, but we found it a smouldering ruin, its flagstones fused together, its walls reduced to ash. But first, of course, there was the time the dragons came to Arunsmount."
Now it was the turn of both the knights to nod. All knew that story, but there were precious few who had survived to tell their own account first-hand. They had not known their hostess to be amongst their number. It might not aid their cause here, but they couldn't help but be curious as to what she'd seen. How it had felt, to feel the living fire rend the skies over her head.
"My lady, if it is not too bold to ask..."
"You want to know what it was like?" She sighed, clearly tired of sharing this particular tale. "Dragons are a natural disaster brought to life, a swarm of locusts in a single form, and worse than both of those combined. The only mercy is their rarity. Most of us will only know of one such encounter in our lifetimes. For those on the walls at Arunsmount, that was swiftly guaranteed."
She stood; the knights moved to rise with her, as chivalry required, but she waved for them to remain as they were. "You are young," she told them, a wry smile upon her fire-dried lips. "You may sit for hours without the fear of never getting up again, but my arms and legs require constant reminder of their roles."
She began pacing as she spoke, pretending to take in a tour of her own room, inspecting the ironwork on a brazier, the burnished metal of a sconce, taking her time to study the lock on the door. For their part, the knights had to keep turning back and forth, wondering how long before their necks would start to ache. This wasn't something that they'd trained for in the tiltyards.
"On a cold night, you may not want to bathe yourself in the burning city's warmth, its light, but you step closer nonetheless, your body drinking in the energy of fire fuelled by flesh... and then you have to live with that, for the rest of your life. The knowledge you gleaned some comfort from their suffering."
They had nothing to say to that, and their hostess didn't expect a response. She continued to pace, as if monologuing to the walls, their presence less important than the flames that flickered with her breath. The floor was thick with bearskins, rich Langari carpets, and her footsteps were silenced beneath the crackle of the hearth. All that they could hear was her soliloquy, and the appreciative answer of the flames.
"It remains with you, that sensation, even as the other details of the day begin to fade. The world feels colder, afterwards... and you can never find a way back to the way it was before. You can never feel again the way you did that day, to have bathed in the heat of oblivion. Nothing else holds a candle to it. Not even in a room like this, no matter how close I sit to the hearth."
The knights weren't so sure about that. With the warmth from all directions, and the insulation of the rugs that lined the floor, they felt ready to roast in all their finery. There were no windows in this room, they realised. All light was provided by the fires, and a sense of depth came only from the tapestries hung above them, as if no square foot of stone could go uncovered. It absorbed the heat, and so did they.
"It's like the first time being held. Like an abandoned child, clothed, swaddled for the first time. You desire more of it. Like the warmth of its tamed cousin, the touch of wildfire is addictive. You develop a taste, as one might say of venison or other pleasures of the flesh. I went to Vantalin intentionally, you see. I had heard tell of the fire, witnessed the smoke on the horizon, and required my horse readied at once."
"Might we open the door?" one knight asked, nervous to interrupt her in the middle of her tale. "We did not come dressed for such heat. I appreciate your affinity for the flames, but if we could only have a draught, they may become more bearable."
"Do you remember the first time that you spilled blood?" she answered with a question; not turning around, nor acknowledging their words. "Was it warm, as it soaked into your skin? Knights say that men are water, underneath, frail wineskins that leak their rich claret when ruptured with a blade. But I say we are wax instead. Flesh, skin, bone, all a candle shaped into a man. It all melts, in the end."
She continued her circuit as she waxed lyrical, but then at last turned and headed back towards her seat. The second knight began to speak, an echo of his rival's question, but again she raised a hand to cut him off. There was something in it, this time: the heavy key they'd thought had been left in the door, but which she must have removed during one of her circuits. The knight reached out, thinking she might offer it so he could grant them some reprieve, the door too heavy for her to move alone. Instead, she cast it deep into the flames.
"But words can only do so much," she said. "Let me show you."
