Happy International Women’s Day to all of the gorgeous, inspiring, amazing women in my life and all around the world. My own relationship to womanhood has always been complicated, but I’ve embraced it a bit more lately, partly because I am doing a project about women and it is empowering to be a strong female role model for my peers, students and audiences. (My pronouns are still they/them, though!) I regret that my illness today kept me from celebrating Women’s Day with my castmates at @ovate_company but I am so excited to bring this show to life for all of you. What I ultimately hope for is that women around the world can adopt our show into a piece that reflects their personal experiences - it would be such a joy to see a LGBT theatre pick it up and highlight queer and trans women’s stories, or a Black-owned theatre company talking about their stories, and the list goes on and on. Females form about half of the population of our country, but their situation has been grim.

For centuries, they have been deliberately denied opportunities of growth in the name of religion and socio-cultural practices.

Some of the main reasons that girls are less likely to reach optimal levels of their careers include the fact that girls are expected to assist their mothers at home, meanwhile, the male child has the liberty to relax and not contribute to any household work.

Many poor families marry their daughters off early with a belief that the more she will stay at home, the more they'll be needed to invest in her. Plus, it is a popular belief that if a girl is a too educated no one would marry her.

At Parkshala, we are trying, striving, to bridge the gap of inequality by giving equal opportunities, not following any stereotypes or biases, and ensuring that the girls coming to us continue their education all the way to college.

But more than this, we are teaching the girls they deserve more and we are teaching the boys to respect a girl's choices.

So, today I reached my breaking point. I was skinny shamed once again. Yes, it is a thing. I don’t know why society thinks that this is ok. It’s hurtful, embarrassing and demeaning. Being told, “you’re too skinny”, “eat a burger!” And “you don’t eat?” Is just as hurtful as calling someone fat. I’ve been skinny shamed since I was in high school and it hurt me so much that people really thought I had an eating disorder and started spreading rumors that I was anorexic or bulimic. I usually roll those comments off my back and not think about it but as a woman now and with a child, I still can’t believe that this is still happening to me. Can I live? Can I breathe? Can I walk down the street with a tank top and shorts and not get comments like, “is everything ok”, “you’re really too thin”. Like, enough already! I have a hard time gaining weight and that’s what a lot of people don’t know about me. I eat regular meals like everyone else. I’m tired of being shamed for being too thin and it needs to end now. Don’t ever judge someone at all because you don’t know them from a hole in the wall. As women, we should be uplifting one another and not putting each other down.
