Not gonna go out on this limb on a 25k post, but maybe it’s okay that kids today don’t know as much about using an actual computer as we do/did? Is it useful knowledge? Of course it is. So is using a sewing machine or being able to rebuild your VW with a copy of that one book every VW driver used to have. That’s not the right question—most practical knowledge is useful after all. The question should be “is it relevant to the way people live right now.” “How to Keep Your VW Alive” is a timeless fucking classic; my ex and I kept our copy long after he sold his VW. But I’m not buying a copy now because it won’t exactly help me keep my VW ID4 on the road.

And it’s funny, because I tend to read along with those posts and nod my head, because back in my day we HAD to know all that computer stuff. And then for some reason today, I remembered a conversation my mom and I had with my grandma in the mid 70s when I was a teenager. Grandma made my mom’s wedding dress. She worked at a department store doing alterations on foundation wear, which if you look at 1950s foundation wear, you’ll realize was both necessary and difficult. So she was shocked when I said most of my friends didn’t know their way around a sewing machine. “But how do you make sure your clothes fit?!” Well, Grandma, people don’t wear heavy foundation wear any more and clothes don’t need to be as tailored as they did back in the day—it’s 1975 and the only alterations I need to do is hemming my flares so they just touch the floor when I’m wearing platforms.

Now you can back up and look at the broader picture, the one that says, but your car should be repairable by you as long as you have clear instructions, and you should be able to alter your clothes or make your own, and yes, you should know how to organize the files on the desktop of your laptop. But the fact that for the most part it’s become easier and easier to just not do those things (if they can be done at all) isn’t exactly the fault of Kids Today. And it’s certainly not meeting them where they are or even trying to understand why they feel they don’t need that knowledge if, instead of looking at why they don’t have it and maybe even don’t need it, you just decry their lack of the Deep Wisdom.

further bitching will not be going in the liveblog tag but i need to speak my truth ……. i fear victory+ is probably not going to grow on me gang 😭 i think the desktop ui is bad for watching anything longer than a player’s post practice media availability!! and i think it's also bad for watching something that you’d like to take up your window but not your full screen!! also having the video player naturally take up a third of the screen & be so severely off center is A Choice ………….. it’s like what if your professional sports broadcast wanted to be formatted like a youtube video but with an even smaller video player. and also the biggest (and most off center!!) pause & fast forward buttons imaginable anytime your cursor so much as twitches towards said video player.

on a note to all: my plotting style is something i like to call i have adhd and if i see you on the dash and have an idea chances are i’ll im you about it. i’m an anxious little dude who isn’t always active in a broad scope, and it’s always been my nature to reach out to people. that doesn’t make me even remotely anxious. not even remotely expected to answer me — i totally get it, sometimes you don’t feel the vibe — but a general psa about how i work. i come from the dinosaur era where the only way to communicate with one another on any level was to directly talk to them and frankly i don’t even know how else you’re ever supposed to plot with a person otherwise. like… how do you write if you never talk????

man i have so many DMs to catch up with i know a lot of them are just ppl sending me posts but i literally am unable to keep up with all of them now day to day bc they will build up so fast, im considering closing dms

but on the other hand, i hesitate to do it because its one of the ways i interact with people and i like to be accessible (though I really havent done a good job of it lately at all)

to be honest my hours on tumblr have been reduced so much recently bc of my life changes. between jobs and friends and other stuff im not on this app as much as i used to be, especially when have free time i want to spend in other ways like videogames (which ive never really super gotten into before, ive been spending more time recently playing) or art projects (i dont have that much time to draw anymore since ive become so busy but i love sharing it still and im super excited to show more stuff)

most of my free time i spend with friends and partner now which is something i really didnt do/wasnt able to do before so im significantly less online in general

the reason im talking about this on my post about dms is because I dont want to just not be around or to be quiet and seem closed off, quite the contrary, I just cant keep up with everything ^^; so I hesitate to close dms because I wouldnt want to seem more closed off or distant than i already do
