This is the concluding story to go along with the Two Ravens at the Writing Desk blog event! Please note, I was not able to respond to all interaction requests, as many were submitted after the period of acceptance and/or disregarded other event rules.)

Does Two of us make a Murder of Crows? … Or an Unkindness of Ravens?

The Newspaper Club's office was a hub of activity. When its door was cracked open, the smell of fresh paper and ink would greet visitors. The murmurs of concentration and furious keyboard clacking of its members, the organization's calling card.

Raven was fond of it.

She tended to skitter on the outskirts of the club, observing as students drifted in and out, sometimes lugging supplies or equipment with them. Too shy to ask if she could pitch in, too scandalized at the thought of the boys staring at her if she entered.

And so she remained, watching.

Raven peered around her secretive corner. Today, there was a cluster of club members outside the office, caught up in a heated debate. One of them--the leader?--had a thick packet in hand and a frown on his face.

"We can't print this," he was saying, waving the papers around.

"If we don't, he'll be on our asses," protested another member. "Let's just suck it up and send it into the printing press."

"Where's your journalistic integrity, man?!" a third demanded.

"We've put out crappier stuff before," a fourth shrugged. "Remember that article about the seven greatest unsolved mysteries on NRC campus? As if most of us don't already know."

"It's not the same thing," the leader shot back. "That was one piece. This is an entire issue. You really want to flush down our rep?!"

Oh dear, it looks like they've run into some sort of trouble. I wonder what's wrong...? Raven leaned a little closer, cupping an ear.

"What are we going to do" The club leader worriedly paced around. "We don't have much time before the deadline comes up on us... Oh, hmm?"

He cocked his head, noticing a flicker of movement around the corner. "Is that...?"

Raven startled. I've been spotted!

"Excuse me!" To her horror, the club leader approached and called out to her. "You are... the headmaster's something-or-other, right? Someone who can speak to him on our behalf."

"Er, yes. I-I suppose that's true." She tried to control her nerves by smoothing out her skirt, but found herself anxiously wringing the hem of it.

"Great! See, the headmaster proposed running a special edition in the campuswide newspaper. In honor of NRC's founding month, he said," the club leader explained. "Front to back, the whole works. The only problem is... well, see for yourself."

He offered his packet. It was about the width of a modest novel and bulged with additional sticky notes and photographs shoved inside of the stack.

One glimpse at the cover page, and Raven instantly understood what was happening.

Oh, Uncle. You just can't stay out of trouble, can you?

"You wanted the school newspaper to have a Crowley-themed edition for March... Have you gone mad?!"

"I thought it would be an earnest and approachable way for the student body to get to know their headmaster," Crowley faintly defended himself. "And you did tell me to pen some writing by my own hand. Does it not make sense to publish those works in a publicly accessible source?"

Raven held her head in her hands. A migraine was coming on, steady but piercing.

"Please do not impose your agenda on a student-run organization. It is meant to be a forum that promotes freedom of expression, not for personal vanity projects!!

"There are other avenues you could use for publications if you want an 'earnest and approachable' image. For example..." She produced her phone, pulling up Magicam via an app. Personal blogs, social media accounts... There are many other places.

"Oh." Crowley cupped his chin. "I was not aware."

"Many students are on Magicam, so if you want to be relatable this may be a good starting point. Perhaps it's not the best for posting written works, but surely you could take pictures of your daily activities and briefly caption them."

"Well, why didn't you say so sooner? Nothing could be simpler, my dear niece!" The headmaster beamed, displaying his pointed, pearly canines.

“I wish you’d explored these options first,” she sighed. “Then we could have avoided this almost-disaster altogether.”

Her guardian was already preoccupied with his own phone now. Typing in information, fishing up the most photogenic pictures from his album to slap on. A few minutes into setting up his account, Crowley paused. He eyed his child the same way a hawk might eye a scurrying field mouse.

“… What is it now?” Raven asked, dreading the worst.

“Oh, I was just thinking about what my first post should be. Something that says a lot about me and where my values lie. I know exactly what to use: a family photo!"

She raised a brow.

Crowley shoved the rejected proposal packet back into his niece's hands. He then shuffled next to her, holding his phone out--the camera, flipped--and made a peace sign with the other.

A bolt of panicked realization raced through her. "Uncle... you don't mean--"

"Fufufu. Say 'cheese', Raven-kun!"

The headmaster's first post would go up around midnight. Under the picture of a jovial crow and a befuddled raven was a very telling statement.

So I do literally have my pronouns in bio. Now it should not be a requirement or anything. If you don't want to put your pronouns in bio, don't put them there, and I'm totally okay with that.

I didn't put pronouns in bio until my egg cracked because I was uncomfortable with the thought, turns out I was uncomfortable with gendering myself for a reason.

But if someone does put pronouns in bio, if they are easily accessible, I do think you have the responsibility to respect them. It feels like a fairly basic social media courtesy. To do otherwise is textbook misgendering.

Of course I presume here you are not a transphobe who thinks misgendering is okay or even obligatory (as some of them explicitly claim). If you are, fuck off, i'm not that interested in litigating my value as a human being or my status as a woman. My assumption here is that misgendering is bad and I don't particularly need to establish why.

Referring to someone by the wrong pronouns when said person has made their pronoun preference very clear, there is no other word for it but misgendering. In fact, misgendering someone with their pronouns in bio on social media is often less excusable than many accidental misgenderings in meatspace, because we often don't make our pronoun preferences that clear and obvious in meatspace.

it does take a few seconds to check the bio of a social media user, but being polite and courteous sometimes requires effort, which is not a blanket excuse to be rude. If it is too much effort to look it up before writing something about someone, then save all your effort and just don't write anything at all.

And using singular they/them about a specific person is misgendering, if said person has made their non-they/them preference clear, by for example putting their actual pronouns in their bio. You are not being "genderneutral", you are just misgendering and being rude.

This is a well known tactic of transphobic misgendering. Like if a writer wrote an article about Chelsea Manning and consistently they/themed her, the fact that said writer is a transmisogynist who is misgendering her wouldn't be in much dispute. They/them is often just the acceptable form of misgendering.

And also "dude/bro/man" are not genderneutral, I will barely dignify such nonsense with a response.

Being gendered correctly is not a privilege of the famous either. This applies even if the person in question is a random tumblr user and you are another random tumblr user writing about them. You should check their bio before writing about them. You should especially check if that person is likely going to read what you write, if it is a reply or tags to a post they made. It's not nice to get misgendering of you in your notifications. This feels like fairly basic courtesy on social media.

Failure to check is at best rude and impolite, and people have a right to object to being misgendered. And then ask for a correction and an apology. And really, all you have to say in such a situation, is something like "I'm sorry, I didn't check" and then maybe correct the misgendering post by editing it. Unless you are really committed to being able to misgender people without pushback, it's likely not the end of the world, and the person being misgendered will likely accept a sincere apology.

And this applies even if you don't like the person in question, if you are writing something that disagrees with their take. Being gendered correctly is not something that you have to earn, it's not a privilege for good behavior, of having the correct takes, of never making a mistake. And it can't be taken away for perceived and real transgressions. It is still unacceptable to misgender an unpleasant person.

Pronouns in a social media bio are not there for a person's friends, it's there so that random strangers interacting with a person's account will hopefully read them and gender the person correctly. The pronouns are there for you to read and respect.

(before anyone tries to be clever on the reading incomprehension website, , I'm using a generic singular they/them in most of these sentences. If you are talking about a specific person, who uses she/her or he/him or any pronouns that aren't they/them, it's msigendering to use they/them for them)

Hello. When I read the tragedy about Shay, I could not believe that this was someone else's problem. Because right now I want to be gone. And not only from fandom. I would like to talk to you if you would like. I feel as if I am the only one in the world right now. I have been a Radiohusk shipper for about two years now, posting pictures on Twitter and even interacting with some of them. It has been a fruitful environment and time for me. It was a peaceful time, as Doc said. I have OCD and often feel unstable. Radiohusk and my shipmates were the ones who calmed the waves until now. Since the publication of this edition, those waves have remained rough. My favorite ship is constantly denounced, and even my not-so-great drawings get cruel quote retweets. I hated drawing. Now I don't even pick up a brush. Also, a number of shippers who were my friends have already left the fandom. It is like an island in the sea. My OCD has been tormenting me for a long time, but what torments me the most is that the trend doesn't seem to end. Is there any safer space anywhere? This ask brings back strong memories because this theme is a recurring one, first with Shay, then with other people who came to us in private.

The bad news is, we have really no way of going back in time. But the good news is, painful as it can be, we can adjust and make the best of what comes our way going forward.

If these characters and their relationship are important to you, it's okay for you to not let go of them, but it's also important that you try to not connect them to your own pain. Fortunately, they're fictional: no matter what you or other people choose to do with them, nothing really changes, so you can really do whatever you please with them.

I think what seems to have worked for most of those we have spoken to is to form their own little "niche" of like-minded people. Value quality over quantity, so to speak. Find those who feel the same as you (and trust me, they exist), create your own little community, may it be on Twitter, Discord, etc. Draw together, write together, share ideas and build up from there.

What seems to have helped another member is to make their own iteration of some of the characters, with a mix-and-match of Ms. Medrano's old versions, which they liked better. Again, it's fiction, so the limit truly only is the sky.

However, please do not make Shay's mistake to try and find the solution to your personal struggles within internet communities. Reach out to your friends and family, talk to them. Find like-minded people to connect with.

Hiii. This is, as you can probably guess, an ask blog/rp account! Just real quick under the cut, here's a few basics for conduct:

I am an adult, but will not be answering any NSFW asks, and I also reserve the right to not reply to anything that makes me personally uncomfortable. This probably won't happen anyway, but I want to make my stance clear just in case. There's a lot of minors on milgramblr and running similar roleplay blogs, and I want this to be a safe and comfortable blog for everyone to interact with.

For consistency's sake, the current timeline of this blog is set in trial one. This may, and likely will, change at some point. I might jump timelines around later. But, starting out, it'll be trial one.

I try to stick close to canon in my characterization, but might indulge in a few personal headcanons here and there, especially to fill in gaps on things we don't know. If you send "magic anons" and things of that sort, I may or may not reply/go with it, depending- I'd like to stick mostly with the idea that any asks sent here are the "voices" that the prisoners mention hearing (so, not being able to physically do anything)... but I also may decide to indulge for fun. Basically, it's up to personal discretion. Just know it might not get answered.

This is probably going to be more of an ask-blog type thing than it is... a rp blog per-se, but I may dip my toes into roleplaying a bit on here as well! Other Milgram RP blogs can feel free to interact, and Mahiru will respond to any asks from RP blogs as if they were being sent by your character. I'll tag interactions with other prisoners with their number!

17. Ugh, not really. I tend to just write when I have downtime, but, honestly, there are absolutely times when it's been less downtime and more like...I'm having to choose between writing and the giant pile of clean laundry sitting in my living room and the laundry is simply being neglected (this is definitely just an example and definitely not reflective of the giant pile of clean laundry currently sitting in my living room. Of course not.). I do probably need to have more of a life routine in general because I know I do better with one, and writing will be a regular part of that, but right now, it's just sort of a whenever I can sort of thing.

56. Oh, for sure. There are some themes in Purpose of Heritage that I wish I'd either introduced earlier or made a bit tighter. I generally like Collateral and I think it ties into The Empire Strikes Back quite well, but there is some minor inconsistency in character interactions in early chapters that I don't feel made sense even just a couple of chapters later, so I could do with rewriting that one (I'm not going to, to be clear). And I feel like the pacing of Spiral Together could use some work. But I made a rule for myself when I first started posting that I wasn't going to do retroactive edits because otherwise...I would probably still be rewriting Collateral. Once it's posted, the only edits that are made are if there is a typo egregious enough for me to go to the trouble of updating the story on FFN. Because updating stories on FFN is a pain in the butt, so if the typo isn't egregious enough to warrant that, I don't edit retroactively. (There is technically one exception to this: I changed a line in Reconstitution, but I changed it so soon after posting, I would be shocked if anyone read the original version.)

77. I enjoy writing fanfiction for a number of reason. I like the community aspect of it -- there are a bunch of people who have strong feelings about characters and worlds and stories, so much so that they want to create things themselves. I like the ability to take a franchise that's understandably pretty surface-level given its target audience and delve deeper into possible character motivations and realistic depictions of what a character might be going through emotionally. I like being able to drop right into the fun stuff without having to do a bunch of worldbuilding if I don't feel like it. And I like that tropes are a thing, and that we could all look at them as lame cliches, but instead, we kind of just embrace the fact that we each like certain tropes, and sometimes it's not about the originality of the idea, but the artistry in executing a well-worn concept. That's fun to me.

Weekly Update March 15, 2024

Something is wrong with me today, but I’m not sure what. I’m keeping an eye on what I suspect it may be, although it’s more likely a sleep related problem. I’ll try to get to bed early tonight. I did a good amount of artstuffs this week, though.

First real significant thing I did this week was record a bunch of melodies for songs and covers. I’m getting somewhere on the main cover I’m working on, and I’ll be tweaking the vocals hopefully soon and possibly posting a WIP once they’re acceptable. I think I will need to chop up the wav file and add effects only to specific notes to add more bite, since vocaloid seems to not really be able to do that. That’s fine I’m a smart person sometimes I can get around it.

Other instrumental songs are going well too. Made good progress on an old Zelda medley/cover I’d been working on, and another instrumental character theme has a good outline. I’ll try to really push for them soon, and once I get the Zelda one done I’ll poke at mechanical license websites to see how bad pricing is and see what songs are even available. The vocal cover should be, since it’s from a mainstream band, but I don’t know if video game music will be available, we’ll see. I might also go in for more recording tonight to see if a bit of movement/exercise would help whatever physical problem I’m having today.

I also have been having awful insomnia, which I’ve been using the time to try chipping away at lyrics for the two ‘vocal’ songs I’m done with otherwise. I’m sitting down and doing one section per session, so with any luck I can get those done soon too.

Drawings are also going well enough. I’m getting weirdly self conscious about my art, since I haven’t really seen a lot of growth in interaction on any of the sites I post to except here. Thank you guys for sticking with me! I’m trying to pull myself together to do more small drawings, so you guys have a bit more to look at for now, although I also have been chipping away at that comic still. I need to write/thumbnail 2 more scenes and edit, then I should be good to make actual pages.

Aside from the initial pitch comic I’m thinking about the outlines for the rest of the stories a bit more now. I get anxious when I get insomnia so I’ve been trying to just write in general, so I can at least be productive with the time, and that’s included lyric stuff, TTRPG stuff, and a lot of OC story stuff. I’m always afraid to lore dump on here unless I’m explicitly asked, for fear of coming off as annoying, but all things considered people seem to like the posts that include lore a bit better so my fear is probably unfounded. Perhaps I will do more on my own, but if you ever really want lore never be afraid to send an ask. I also tag the names of my reoccurring OCs so people can search my blog for them if they want to see more of any specific character.

Also speaking of writing, am still chipping away at an Anime Campaign/Epithet TTRPG game. I put up a poll on the epithet subreddit, which was a cleverly disguised way to gauge interest in an epithet pre-written campaign, since people are more likely to interact with a poll than to upvote a post. There were fourty something people who responded, almost unanimously positively. I might throw another one up there to see how many would actually be interested in DMing, but if feedback comes back positive I might turn what I’ve been working on into a prewritten module for others to run as well. That’d also be a fun writing project, which will be nice because writing is lower effort and lets me rest more, and rest is what I think I need right now.

Good amount of stuff got done this week despite me being in generally poor health. I will try to get better. Focusing on more writing stuff with smaller drawings like headshots will try to be the focus for next week.

#20 - Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

Okay, you have to understand that Off the Books is already the longest fic I’ve ever written by 30k words, and I still have probably another 50k to go. AND it’s my first story I’ve ever posted as a WIP. This fic is so long and so complex that the outline I’m writing from is 15,000 words long!!! So the stakes are high for me to make sure I lay in my foreshadowing and theme development before I publish each chapter, because if I forget to include it up front, it’ll be too late. 

A large part of this story is about unpacking M’s secrets. I gave Q a mysterious backstory with Dench-M for the first half of the fic for Bond and the readers to puzzle over, and I finally revealed Q’s history with M in Chapter 11. By the time I was writing Chapter 10 and staring down the barrel of this upcoming big reveal, I worried whether I’d done enough foreshadowing to really prepare readers to accept that dearly departed M was a stone-cold bitch who had done unforgivable things to Q (and to Bond) for her own ambitions. To reassure myself, I did a re-read of the first 9 chapters and found 50 (FIFTY!) direct and indirect references to M, each one hinting at her manipulations of either Bond or Q. (In retrospect, 50 feels like overkill, and I probably would have edited some of those out were I posting this NOT as a WIP.)

Here’s my favorite bit of all that foreshadowing about M! In Chapter 2, Bond meets with Mallory in dead-M’s office, which Bond describes as “the aviary made of glass, with the full view of the Thames dominating the room. A monument to transparency and her all-seeing eyes.” Bond contrasts her all-glass walls and glass desk with Mallory’s recent redecorating: frost-able windows on the office-side, a heavy mahogany desk, plush carpeting, and thick drapes covering the exterior walls. Mallory explains, “All the glass in here was a security concern. Also, it made privacy impossible.” In this moment, Bond assumes that M’s love of transparency was a virtue, not realizing how she weaponized it to make every meeting with Bond a public performance, so every time she yelled at him and called him a mistake, the entire executive staff would see and hear the rift in their relationship. When Mallory frosts the walls and closes the door for his debriefs with Bond, Bond is discomfited by this deviation from the norm, not recognizing that privacy is Bond’s right, one that his-M had always denied him. 

God damn, I love this version of M so much.

#21 - What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)

My writing style and structure are very heavily influenced by film (specifically all the action movies I grew up watching). I think in terms of “scenes” — actions happening or people interacting in a setting for a purpose. I typically deliver exposition via dialogue, so that it’s delivered “on screen” organically, as opposed to an internal thought (akin to a voice over) or an info-dump in the narrative (like a “previously on,” I guess). I don’t write character studies, long internal asides, or in-depth setting descriptions. Given my focus on plot-driven action, I imagine my fics are pretty well-suited to a live-action film adaptation.

The Club of Heartbreak and Hope

I would like to completely informally invite yall to my totally unofficial and barely existing club: The Club of Heartbreak and Hope. I can't decide on a mascot but our Symbol is the Ace of Spades (♠) because of Cayde-6. (While editing this post, I think I have decided that we have a council of mascots. That being comprised of Cayde-6, Noble 6, Sergeant Johnson, and I had other people but I can't remember who they were right now.) And our "advisors" are currently Sundance and Colonel. I think our anthem/theme song is legends never die. (I discovered the song around the same time I found out about Cayde's first death and the vaulting of Forsaken and it made me think of him so that song is tied to him in my brain. I will be taking suggestions for a different anthem though.)

Conditions for joining: Have a favorite character that died and left behind a sense of duty and/or a legacy to be remembered forever. They do not have to be videogame characters. Movie, show, and book characters are also welcomed. (The sense of duty and legacy is not required but is highly recommended. If you had a beloved character die, please do not let their lack of unfinished business, etc discourage you from sharing with us.) OC's may be allowed. I haven't really decided yet. I say go for it for now, if they died and broke hearts doing so.

Rules: Only supportive speech will be used. It's ok if you don't care about someone else's character as much as they do, but don't say the character sucks or anything like that.

It's kind of hard to have this club and interact with it without having spoilers. But, please label them as spoilers and what the spoiler is from. Some people like a warning before a character dies so this would be a good place to find those warnings.

This is meant to be a place to vent and nerd out over our beloved characters. Even the ones we still have alive in our delusional headcanons.

I may change the rules as necessary but it will always be in the interest of keeping it a safe and unpolluted space.

Stimboards !

Stimboards are 3x3 edits, the layout of the stimboard is dependent on how many muses there are. A duo mused stimboard will have seven stims related to themes given by the requester unless given creative freedom. Photos of the characters will be in the top left corner and the bottom right corner respectively. Mono mused stimboards will have eight themed stims related to themes given by the requester with the muse being in the center of the board.

As above, it will be the same concept but instead of stims it will be photos. The layouts will be the same aswell.

Icons!

Icon packs will come with three graphics, each icon having a different picture as the others to give variation. Along with the three icon pack there will be transparent icons below the cut. When requesting I would appreciate if there are themes provided, otherwise I will take creative freedom.

Seeking out posts related to topics you don't like, purely to identify and harass someone that has an opinion that is different to yours, is not okay, or frankly, healthy.

Please consider seeking professional help if you think this is okay.

First of all, your complaint about the lack of read-more's is entirely out of date. Tumblr has been forcing long posts without a read-more coded in, to be cropped short with another form of read-more button that you must manually click on in order to reveal the full post.

If you come across a post that hasn't had that formatting forced onto it, then that post is genuinely not long enough to require such outside interference. If you have a problem with that, perhaps you should take this up with Tumblr staff rather than the rest of the community that are using this site as it is.

I'll even let you in on a little secret, one that has made my time on this platform so much nicer, and I'll tell it to you free of cost!

You see, Tumblr has a fascinating feature built-in to all of the user interfaces (yes! BOTH desktop and mobile have this) to help you cope with your irritation towards the way other people interact with a public fandom space in a much healthier way than sending messages like this.

Yeah, they already considered that not everyone would be able to get along! To prevent problems like this, they gave you default access to a resource that can clear up most of the problems you seem to be facing within fandom spaces.

If someone not using a read-more bothers you

If you don't like someone's art style, or the way they pick colors, or the genre of music they make, or the way they edit screenshots, or gifs, or whatever the fuck it is they're creating, you can block them, and they won't show up in the feed when you search for the tag anymore.

and I know sweaty, I know that blocking someone doesn't always stop them from showing up on your dash if someone reblogs from them. However, I will remind you that if someone you follow is reblogging content you don't like or in a way you don't find appealing, that's literally on you. You are responsible for having to curate your dashboard to your own liking.

It's okay if you're not following someone you consider a good friend. Maybe their blog theme isn't your jam, or they're really vocal on their feelings about (insert topic/character here), and you don't feel the same or as strongly.

You chose to go into the fandom tag, despite knowing that there are people in the world that might interact with it in a way you don't personally like.

You chose to act like you have no power to curate your internet experience, when in fact you have several options at your fingertips to make sure that any given blog isn't recommended to you.

You chose to act like everyone has to "correctly" tag their content in a way that suits your preferences, despite those preferences being leagues above the standards posted in the tag use guidelines.

You chose to act like someone else trying to live their life and share their art with the world is such a problem.

Looking for Alpha Readers!

Intro and expectations

Heya! My name’s Berry(She/They) and I’ll get right to the mark. I’m currently writing a Frozen fanfic that is an Villain AU(based on Lydia the Bard’s villain Anna AU) and involves multiple characters that are OCs and some canon characters. But feel free to keep interested even if you’re not a Frozen fan! Just someone pasingly interested in Lydia’s content or the fantasy works too!

In terms of the Canon characters I plan to focus on(bold are considered major characters with planned POVs even if for one chapter.

My interests are VERY MUCH NOT sexually explicit content and my romances tend to not be the major focuses of them(my fics generally being in the “Gen” category). If you’re looking to not Alpha fics with sexual content but has romance I’m the fruit for ya! I also take heavy muse inspired from Six of Crows and Wings of Fire which have inspired my trend to have different characters be POVs. I’m generally interested in larger and grander stories in the best way I can describe as being like a “DnD Campaign but a retelling” and characters that are complicated and explore darker themes in a “Teen” rating way.

(I’m still debating some plotlines but of what I have rn)

Such themes or possible content that could be

Abusing upbringing, bullying, bullying main character, childhood neglect, descriptions of freezing and the cold affecting the body, character experience PTSD, character experience amputation induced phantom pain and a general plot point surrounding accepting an unconsented amputation.

As an Alpha reader I am asking someone to-

1. Look at my drafts and point out any major spell checking errors that aren’t caught with the word and Grammarly softwares I use.

2. Give me a first go to have a second set of eyes on it and see if generally the chapter just flows nicely.

So. Why do I need an Alpha Reader.

-I tend to start on things and not finish them even if I’m interested unless I set dedicated deadlines for myself. And knowing that there is going to be someone who will be reading this that I get is that extra incentive for me.

-I also put the Sexy in Dyslexia and I realize it’s much harder for me to spell check my fics and I’d rather focus that energy on keeping the character personalities in check each chapter.

-Additionally currently also in college and use up a loo of my writing/proofreading energy with those essay assignments. Having extra help just to not feel overwhelmed in editing my fics would be incredible!
