Prepare to visit worlds ahead of our time: #UtopianImagination! The third show in @fordfoundationgallery’s inaugural year, curated by @jaishri.abichandani, features 14 diverse artists whose futuristic narratives inspire wonder, joy & hope for our existence on an increasingly imperiled planet. With the understanding that (radical) #love is the answer to the violence presented in #PerilousBodies, this exhibition recognizes the difficulties of the task ahead. Utopias are increasingly hard to imagine in a world torn asunder by conflict. Using #sciencefiction to frame this interrogation, this exhibition presents objects, bodies, vessels, fragments created by artists over time that when pieced together, offer a vision of a future that includes all of us. Images: 1. #YinkaShinibare @shonibarestudio “Cloud 9” one of Shonibare’s earliest black astronaut sculptures-part of a two-decade exploration that imagines the survival of #BlackPeople as pioneers in space. The work explores themes of colonialism, post-colonialism and black aspiration. 2. #ZakOve @zakove “Sky Lark” And #LolaFlash @flash9 “Syzygy” (self portrait) an embodiment of her ancestors’ dreams of liberation. 4. #SaksAfridi @saks__ ‘The Prayer Catcher’. “If all your prayers were answered, would it change the world, or just yours?” ~ unknown #SpaceMosque The narrative explores greed & morality at war when prayer becomes the de facto global currency. The work asks us to reflect on what it is we pray for and to what end. 5. & 6. Zak Ove “Nubian Return” 7. #JulianaHuxtable @julianahuxtable “Lil’ Marvel” (self portrait) as a #transgender #BlackWoman provoking discourse on the power of her own image & heteronormative tropes of anatomy & the politics of the human body. 8. #MikaelOwunna @mikaelowunna “Infinite Essence”. Otherworldly images, black models transformed into #cosmic #ethereal beings. 9. #FarxiyoJaamac @hausofriya “Black Girls Live in Outer Space Too” series 10. #MarikoMori @marikomori #afrofuturistic #afrofuturism #futurism #blackness #blkcreatives #blackexcellence #artlover #artcollector #artcurator #artadvisory #destineeross @desti.knee & #joakimvonditmar (at Ford Foundation) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2kE8uBlsHi/?igshid=1r5b5bf9m8jva

If your skin could be any shade or pattern outside the natural/flesh-toned palette, what would it be? Intriguing - wouldn't mind a bit of iridescent, blue-green scales about my shoulders. But otherwise, I like flesh-tone.
Taking this one from Marnie - What is your favorite fact about the universe? The fact that humans (generally) think they are masters of the cosmos, that we're so smart etc etc, when we are minuscule in the grand scheme of things, and all our squabbles and disagreements, our desires and passions and relationships and non-relationships are so insignificant. We're not even top of the food chain, like we'd like to believe. Even just watching the stars at night - the vastness of it all takes my breath away.
How are apples and oranges supposed to be compared? Well, they're both fruit and bear seeds, have skins and are edible, so I guess it'll depends on what you're in the mood for. E.g. I'm never in the mood for apples, so oranges always.
Which historical figure would you meet if given the chance? Either Hua Mulan or the mariner Zheng Ho.
Memory is strongly tied to the olfactory sense. What smell triggers the strongest nostalgia for you? Tbh, I associate memories with my auditory sense more than with my olfactory sense, but I will say that a certain cologne has been riling me up recently...
What have you done recently to dismantle the patriarchy? Hahaha I emotionally/symbolically excised my misogynist brother from my life and actually made the rest of my family understand and accept the reasons behind this.
If you could add something to the high school curriculum, what would you add? Um. Chinese history. 5000 years, people. Some major inventions there.
Talk about an important learning experience. Through various experiences during childhood, it's stuck with me that no matter how good my English is, or how native my accent, I will never be perceived as a 'New Zealander' or a 'Kiwi'. I will always be 'Chinese' and I decided from then that this Chinese girl will be one who is able to speak and read and write her own language.
Pick something (preferably meaningful) from your immediate surroundings and tell the story behind the item. There's an empty bottle of Chardonnay, and one of Pinot Gris sitting nearby, borne from some sneakiness at work (aka we swiped them; double the risk since I don't like Chard and he doesn't like Gris) and consumed during a spontaneous supper on the beach. We'd gone intending to swim, but clean forgot that tides go out occasionally.
Elaborate on an unpopular opinion of yours. Not sure if this counts as an opinion, but this does get some hackles rising - as an physical anthropology major, I can say with certainty that humans evolved to consume meat, and this change in subsistence is key to our encephalisation.
Somewhere you would like to move or visit? Czech Republic. To visit. I think. It's a big maybe.
My questions:
1. Most disturbing book or movie read/watched this year. Emotionally unsettling/moving, that is, not necessarily scary or controversial.
2. Long-term long distance relationships are doomed to fail. True or false, and why.
3. Pure altruism is possible - agree or disagree, and why.
4. The superpower of your choice.
5. Opinion on marriage.
6. Favourite guilty pleasure.
7. The sexiest accent is ____________.
8. If you had to get a tattoo right now, what would it be and where would it be.
9. Share something about yourself.
10. Choose someone other than Hitler and other Nazis to remove from history.
11. Favourite scent.

@FordFoundationGallery “#RadicalLove” 2nd in a trilogy of exhibitions curated by @Jaishri.Abichandani @Natasha.Becker. The theme of #UtopianImagination, the 3 exhibitions in the gallery's inaugural year create a trajectory toward a more just future. The 1st #PerilousBodies examined #injustice through the intersecting lens of violence, race, gender, ethnicity & class. #RadicalLove responds by offering #love as the answer to a world in peril. Love defined by a commitment to the spiritual growth & interconnectedness of the individual, their community & stewardship of the planet. Guided by the powerful words of bell hooks, “Were we all seeing more images of loving human interaction, it would undoubtedly have a positive impact on our lives.” The works are grounded in ideas of devotion, abundance & beauty; here, otherness & marginality is celebrated, adorned & revered, that is deeply rooted in their love for their own communities & of humanity & demonstrate that when the world deems your existence unworthy, casting yourself as a subject is an act of radical love. Understanding the regenerative impact of this love, their work is an antidote to our collective pain. Employing everything in their arsenal, the 23 international artists created enchanting works that transform disabled, black, brown, indigenous & queer subjects into protagonists of new narratives of love & redemption, transforming the gallery into a space of visual lushness & opulence, one that envelopes the viewer in a sense of love, protection, power & unity,” says Lisa Kim, the gallery’s director. “Their work seeks to bring to life images of love, joy, pain, grace, and glory — experiences we’ve all felt at times in our own lives.” “Memorial” by La Vaughn Belle & Jeannette Ehlers honoring Mary Thomas, one of the women who led the 1878 rebellion of plantation workers in St. Croix Bradley McCallum & #JacquelineTarry’s “The Evidence of Things Not Seen,” layered portraits honoring protesters arrested during & after the January 1956 Montgomery Bus Boycotts. #artlovers #artcollectors #artcurators #artadvisory #DestineeRoss #JoakimvonDitmar #representationmatters #womeninthearts #queer #lgbt #blackness (at Ford Foundation) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByniXbtlfIk/?igshid=3p34dsmi1t7f

Music Post Yay ^_^
(this was made primarily for utopianimagination's benefit but if you're reading this lol I guess)
Boreta - Lobegrinder (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUmiUaVFIcM)
Boreta is an artist under The Glitch Mob, an electronica group. I quite like this one because it's rather trippy?? and you can just close your eyes, and ahh. And just let the narrative unfold in the forms of beats in your head.
Closing Time - Semisonic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGytDsqkQY8)
This is a really cute song that's ostensibly about a dude leaving bar (?) but apparently is supposed to serve about a metaphor about the songwriter anticipating becoming a father. I think it's quite cute and simple :) It has such a nostaglic feel to it! lol.
The Horror of Our Love - Ludo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kQ-0bBkMIY)
This song is about a serial killer-murder person who becomes borderline obsessed (almost in love ish?) with somebody. I think it's kind of morbid, sweet, and innocent at the same time? It's kind of gets me uncomfortable, like it settles inside of you??
I Must Be Dreaming & Into your Arms - The Maine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt1u_yjmRg0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHgDLToY57s
This is two basically two really cute pop songs :) I particularly like the I Must Be Dreaming one because he's constructing this entire fabrication of a life with his ideal girl and it's kind of pangingly sad that he's okay with this just being a fantasy cries ;w; Also the beats are catchy don't judge me lol.
Kanpai - Nagabuchi Tsuyoshi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek7QrxTalSk)
This song is Japanese, and it's kind of an oldie that my mom introduced to me (released in 1985 lol). I just like how motivational and melancholic it sounds at the same time! It's about celebrating how you've endured so much so far, but you have still a lot ahead for you to look forward to. I feel like it's very relevant on any point in life you are in n_n
"Kanpai" refers to the sound of the clinking of champagne glasses, and it's like a phrase japanese people say before they drink a toast to celebrate something.
ALSO READ THE LYRICAL TRANSLATIONS Y'ALL: http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/k/kanpai.shtml
Lorde - Team (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g03b4U_aPk) You know what, I am not actually sure what this song is about. I actually am quite fond of Lorde's lyrical style because it's somewhat ambiguous and I feel like she's doing something interesting by using unique lingo?? I feel like there's some sort of deeper theme in it, but I haven't discerned it quite yet which is why I keep going back to this song. I *think* it's about again, rebelling against some sort of traditionalized institution and building your own dreams and independent yourself? It kind of has that disillusioned, almost bitter tang to it?
I have a lot more but yeah o___o;
