VALIDE SULTANS: "Abdülaziz's reign was rife with intrigue, partly owing to the pervasive influence of Pertevniyal and to the ruler's instability of character. He was known to have strange desires, such as a craving for the company of rare animals and birds. After the death of his able grand vizier Ali Pasha, who had exercised a stabilizing influence over him, his government became increasingly capricious. The fact that the sultan's hold on mental health was insecure was known by the women of his entourage and suspected by the public. The saraylıs and the valide suspected that a spell had been cast on him and hired şeyhs to counteract it. At the time the valide had a special prayer read for him in some of the imperial mosques during the Friday sermon (hütbe), a circumstance which increased uneasiness about his mental condition.When Abdülaziz took his trip to Europe, his mother was anxious about him the whole time he was away. On his way home he stopped at Rusçuk, where Mithat was governor, with the intention of staying a month and acquainting himself with the Balkan country. But Pertevniyal, a possessive and short-sighted woman, wrote him to come home immediately. Sultan of Turkey though he was, he obeyed his mother's command.Pertevniyal contributed to the instability of her son's rule by meddling in affairs of state. In the past, families who had wanted to place their sons in imperial service had got them in via the Janissaries; now they sent the boys directly to the valide sultan. The rabble-rouser Patrona Halil, though he was riding high at the time, nevertheless thought it necessary to have an interview with both the Ağa of the House of Felicity and the valide sultan. VALIDE SULTANS: Saliha Dilaşüb Sultan was the third Haseki Sultan of Ibrahim I and the mother of Süleyman II. She is variously called Saliha Dilaşüb, Aşüb Sultan or even Aşübe Sultan, like in a palace document in which she is listed as recipient of several jewels. 

Her country of origin and when she joined the harem is unknown, but Sakaoğlu claims that she was the first concubine to be presented to Ibrahim, even though hers was not the first child of the sultan. The future Mehmed IV was born 150 days before her son, condemning her son Süleyman to the Kafes at the death of their father.

After the deposition of Ibrahim in August 1648, Mehmed acceded to the throne as Mehmed IV: Saliha Dilaşüb was sent to the Old Palace and Prince Süleyman to the Kafes. For 39 years, she lived a silent and devout life in the Old Palace and saw her son only twice a year during the holidays. 

In 1687, Mehmed IV was deposed and as the eldest male member of the dynasty Süleyman was considered a better choice for the throne than Mehmed IV's eldest son Mustafa. Therefore Süleyman ascended the throne as Süleyman II and Saliha Dilaşüb was brought to Topkapi Palace to be Valide Sultan in a magnificent procession. 

Her tenure lasted 2 years and 2 months but she spent the last year of her life bedridden at Edirne Palace. She died on 3 January 1690 and was laid to rest in the mausoleum of Süleyman I.

She held this position for twenty-eight years during the reigns of her sons Murad IV and Ibrahim and the early years of the reign of her grandson Mehmed IV. VALIDE SULTANS: "When Osman III (r. 1754-7) ascended the throne upon his brother Mahmud I's death, he was already aged 55 and his mother Şehsuvar Sultan (d. 1756) was thus established as queen mother for only for a brief duration. Like Saliha Sultan, and unlike Gülnuş Sultan, she did not have the opportunity to embark on building activities when she was the favourite of Mustafa II, and her short tenure as queen mother, only 16-and-a-half months, undoubtedly hindered any architectural patronage she might have planned. When he ascended the throne she took the title Mehd-i Ulyâ-yı Saltanat-ı Seniyye [Most High Mother of the Exalted Sultanate]. Even in her old age one could see that she had been strikingly beautiful in her youth. She was Circassian, as were all the ladies of my grandfather, and from the Ubykh clan. She was a beautiful woman, possessing a petite and slender figure with translucent white skin, blue eyes, golden blonde hair, and truly lovely hands and feet. One could see how worthy she was of the rank of Princess Mother from her refined comportment as well as her dignity and charming disposition. This esteemed lady’s luminous face, graciousness, delicate manner, and elegance inspired respect and affection in everyone’s heart, so that all those living in the palace loved her deeply.
