DuckTales: Woo-oo!
24 hours of the DuckTales series premiere, and all the time in the world to post this first recap of the new reimagining.
...
Yeah, I’m gonna talk about this right now.
Our story begins with Donald Duck having to drop his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie (voiced respectively by Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz and Bobby Moynihan) off at the mansion of the famous adventurer Scrooge McDuck (voiced by famed Doctor Who star and vampire hunter David Tennant) so he can get to a job interview. At first, Scrooge wants nothing to do with his great-nephews, but after an exciting battle with a ghost pirate, a Headless Manhorse, and Pishu the goldaholic dragon, he gets his adventurous spirit back and goes off to find the lost city of Atlantis, taking the nephews and Webby Vanderquack (voiced by Kate Micucci), granddaughter of Mrs. Beakley (voiced by Toks Olagundoye), with him and his crash-prone pilot/chauffeur/submarine... whatever drives submarines Launchpad McQuack (voiced by Beck Bennett). Little do they know, though, that Flintheart Glomgold, who is now a Scottish Lord Hater (which makes sense, see how here he’s voiced by Keith Ferguson), is also after the lost city, bringing along a skilled team of goons and Donald along to take the prized treasure for himself.
As a series premiere to the reboot of one of the greatest Disney shows of all time, it’s a great prologue for things to come, giving us a chance to meet the characters and setting up a plotline or two to go into as the series progress. It also brilliantly mixes what made the the comics such classics with what made the show based on said comics so good, while also managing to update it with the intelligence abd fun of Disney’s other recent animated shows. Then again, with the talents of former “Wander over Yonder” writers like Francisco Angones (who co-developed this series and wrote this one-hour episode) and Noelle Stevenson and the artists who worked on Gravity Falls, like Dana Terrace, John Aoshima and Sean Jimenez, could you have expected anything less than this.
Of course, the characters also shine very much on their own. One update I really liked was the way they did the kid characters and Mrs. Beakley. The triplets finally have their own distinct personalities (Huey being the brains of sorts, Dewey is the adventurous troublemaker, and Louie is the treasure-loving kid) and Webby is less of a girly tea-party kind of girl and more of a brave, research-heavy, energetic kind of girl, and it’s the element that definitely works better here than it did in the original show. Of course, the adult ducks are also well done in this regard. Scrooge McDuck is the same money-loving duck we know and love, and David Tennant just makes the character so much more fun, and is a fitting heir to the role Alan Young made famous; Donald Duck is as hilariously unfortunate as ever, though it IS nice that he’s got a bigger role and has a lot of concern for his nephews; Launchpad is still the master of transportation disaster we love, though here his accident-proneness has been upped several levels; casting Keith Ferguson as Glomgold was so much funnier than I expected the matchup to be; and Mrs. Beakley, instead of a mere nanny who faints at the sight of a flying evil castle, is now a tough, no-nonsense bad-at-sign-dollar-dollar grandmother of a housekeeper that could whoop your butt in a second.
Then there’s the animation. I really love that they made it look like a comic book come to life, and the way it’s executed by Snipple Animation and Toon City matches the art style and moves just as perfectly as it should. Sure, there’s a small paint error here and there, but frankly, it’s leagues better than the animation in the Powerpuff Girls reboot.
Take notes, Cartoon Network; THIS is how you do a good reboot of a classic show. It knows exactly what people loved about the original show (the adventures and the characters), beautifully updates it all with some great writing and comedy, and gives it a fresh coat of pleasing animation, and I could not have been more impressed by the results. Trust me when I say, you will likely have just as much fun watching this as you had watching the original show, and I am kind of excited for what adventures await in this new series.
Also, Della Duck is brought up.
“MOM?!”

(Dhampir!Scrooge anon again) Any headcanons about Scrooge and Beakley raising a non-dhampir Webby (she didn't get Scrooge's powers, adding to the believability that she's related to Beakley) like when she's really little or before the start of the series?
Depending on how much Scrooge has been around non-supernatural babies before, Beakley might have to sit him down shortly after bringing Webby for a lecture on things babies, specially the ones like her, CAN'T do. He ends up being a bit apprehensive around Webby at first since she's very small and fragile.
He's also the first one to reach her when she has a nightmare, heightened hearing + supernatural speed is a hard to beat combo. Ends up having to get some good ear plugs during the early months for when she's sick to retain part of his sanity though, her crying is LOUD.
------------------
The first time Beakley got Scrooge to hold baby Webby, she immediately went to poke the oddly pointy fangs and started giggling, to everyone's surprise.
------------------
There was a certain period of time since the moment she started crawling where Webby used to constantly try to drink blood because Scrooge always does it so it has to be edible and good right? Only for Beakley to immediately jump to get it away from her tiny hands every single time.
-------------------
Considering the lack of contact with the outside world, Webby would probably assume some specific things Beakley and Scrooge share as the default XD
Superior strength? Enhanced reflexes? Sharp senses? Nothing out of the ordinary. Which is less than ideal when she starts going outside and meeting new people that get hurt easily with things she finds so harmless and regular.
Cue to Beakley's second round of "things regular people CAN'T do 101"
