Wolfgang Van Halen has admitted that he was "nervous as hell" performing his late father Eddie's songs at last year's Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts.
Wolfie played three Van Halen songs — "On Fire", "Hot For Teacher" and "Panama" — over the course of two concerts last September alongside Dave Grohl on bass, Josh Freese on drums and The Darkness' Justin Hawkins on vocals.
In a new interview with Rock Sound conducted at this weekend's Download Festival in the UK, Wolf looked back on that Hawkins tribute concerts, saying:
"Oh, man. I was nervous as hell. Taking away any emotional weight to it all, just performing with three musicians who I've loved my entire life and looked up to was crazy enough, but then you add the emotional weight of it all for Taylor. [It was] probably one of the only few times I'd ever really play any songs like that for Pop and for Taylor. Yeah, just an insane thing that I'll never forget."

Wolfie is set to release "Mammoth II," the second album from his post-Van Halen band Mammoth WVH, on August 4th.

Black Sabbath - Wheels of Confusion / The Straightener
Mastodon - Blood and Thunder (you may recognize this one from a certain meme)
Carpenter Brut - 347 Midnight Demons

Brant Bjork - Low Desert Punk
King Crimson - Frame By Frame
Megadeth - Holy Wars…The Punishment Due
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Stratosphere Serenade
Van Halen - Atomic Punk
Slayer - Dead Skin Mask
The Ocean - Jurassic | Cretaceous
and to cleanse your palette a little,
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn’t Stand The Weather

-ff
I love black sabbath! I already have 3 entire albums in my playlist as well as album discs! But HOW have I not heard that black sabbath song???!!! Same with Megadeth AND Slayer! These are some great bands...
((Just so you know I post these without the review, listen to the songs, then update this post, so come back to it a bit later and it'll be updated with the reviews))
Wait and Dimond head inspired METALLICA?? Woah you learn something new everyday... I love both bands.
OK FINISHED! I'm just going to simplify these 13 songs and say... 10/10 to all of them!

Years had passed. Maybe too long. Anakin had been whisked away to another universe because his stupid dumb ass played with magic Merlin warned him not to touch. Now he was showing up on Marty's doorstep. Deep down he knew it was a long shot. He wouldn't blame McFly for punching him square in the face. Hopefully, Nuallian contacted after he reappeared in his cabin in attire unlike his own. Knocking nervously at the door, he shoved his hands in his pockets.
Tumblr media
The night before, Marty had switched off his morning alarm, eager to sleep in later. For the past few weeks, the happy couple had made it a routine to switch between who held early breakfast duties, and given the fact that Marty cooked that morning, the following would be Anakin’s turn. After finding a comfortable position within each other’s arms, Marty said one last drowsy “I love you,” before embracing the sandman.
The night passed by peacefully and uneventfully, and he had only barely registered his boyfriend exiting the bed hours later, mumbling incoherent nonsense before flipping to his opposite side, returning to sleep.
Never in a million years would he have believed that that was to be the last time he saw Anakin Skywalker.
During those first few weeks, he barely slept, searching everywhere he could for his missing lover, retracing their steps. . . Trying to recall any sort of hint the taller man could’ve given upon his location. . . save for the half empty coffee mug upon their kitchen counter, it was as if the mercenary had disappeared off the face of the earth.
The pain was excruciating, but unlike falling down that same rabbit hole he did when the Doc vanished, Marty did what he believed Anakin would have wanted him to do, in the event of his passing: he accepted it, and moved on.
Well, “moved on” would be a poor choice of words, as Skywalker never truly left his heart. . He simply used his memory to guide him to his next chapter of life. He put his everything into the music he had been working on, and after two years of hustling cross-country, he had accepted the… oddest of gigs:
Marty now permanently lived in the outskirts of Las Vegas, after accepting the almost prestigious gig of being lead guitarist in the band for various residencies located along the strip. While not exactly the rockstardom he had once envisioned for himself. . . it felt damned-near close to it. He had the opportunity to meet countless celebrities, perform with the greatest. . .
. . . In the present moment he was trying his hand at the Michael Jackson tribute show, and he felt electrified when it was up to him to play tribute to Eddie Van Halen with “Beat It.” Literally, the prop department had the insane idea to put a flamethrower at the end of his guitar.
As it was nearing closer and closer to Halloween, for each show of October the members of the band would dress up in silly costumes, and while at his townhouse Marty, his makeup artist, and the band were giggling up a storm as the shortest man tested out the iconic werewolf mask from Thriller.
Before long a knock was heard at the door, and the room became hushed - barely contained giggles - as they urged the man in the not-so-scary mask to retrieve the pizza they ordered twenty minutes ago.
Marty put his palm upon the doorknob, inhaling a deep gulp of air, all but ready to growl and roar as the door was opened. . .
. . . But, instead, the werewolf froze; no sound being heard, except for that air rushing out of his lungs.
It wasn’t. . . could it be . . .?
The shorter man ripped the mask from his head, dropping it behind him so he could get a clearer view of the ghost before him.
“An-Anakin?” A tiny voice quivered, as if spoken any louder he would disappear into the night air.

Fighting the Foo In Cincinnati
My tenth Foo Fighters show in 30 years took place almost in the exact same spot as I saw them the first time - just in a wildly different, and much larger, venue. Caddy’s garage is long gone as are the opportunities to see Foo Fighters with 500 people for $12.
Dave Grohl and his motley assortment of long time musical cohorts smashed into Great American Ballpark last week like an out of control meteor bringing with it the last remaining vestiges of arena/stadium rock and roll. All of the expected Foo Fighters tropes were present and accounted for. Loud, crunchy guitars. Screaming vocals. Crowd wide sing alongs. Laughter and some tears.
The set list pulled from the Foos entire catalogue featuring moments as Dave put it for “OGs, newbies, and everyone”. It’s a hit parade of rock tunes reaching back through time to the debut album “This is a Call” to the latest “Rescued” “Under You” “The Teacher”. In between the hits, solos and scream alongs the band played tributes to classic rock with hat tips to Metallica, Van Halen, the Ramones and AC⚡️DC.
The band were tight, the songs were excellent, and the vibes were good. I should mention the elephant in the room the absence of the late Taylor Hawkins. This was my first time seeing the band without Taylor and his absence was obvious. Josh Freese is an incredible drummer but he plays like he's still in Nine Inch Nails. It gave the songs a heavier sound and vibe and culminated with an excellent cover of March of the Pigs the aforementioned NIN. But what was missing was the groove and spontaneity Taylor brought to the proceedings. Gone were those mini moments between songs where Dave and Taylor would share a joke, smile, laugh or beer. Gone also were Taylors vocals and his solo moment were Dave would play drums and Taylor would sing Queen. It added a heaviness to the proceedings that maybe only long time fans noticed but it made the event bittersweet.
Overall though it was a rock show for the ages. Mammoth opened and Wolf Van Halen demonstrated why he is the best guitar player in the business. The Pretenders stole the show with a punk heavy set that even entirely dispensed with Brass in Pocket.
Rock and Roll is very much alive. I wish Taylor Hawkins still was.

A to Z, Loud Rock to Heavy Metal
A pig in a dress is still a pig...
The case of Pantera Part 2:
It's not the same band. Dime was like Eddy Van Halen, his guitar playing had a signature sound, Dime's was the sound of chainsaw sawing through metal while Phil Anselmo screams about being addicted and miserable. Good times.
New Pantera? No! No Pantera! It's apples to oranges when you're comparing the original and this tribute lineup. Zakk Wylde's guitar playing is closer to Slash, if Slash was paying homage to Lynrd Skynyrd and Randy Rhoades. To me Slash was more garage rock, sloppy and fuzzy classic rock than straight up 80's metal like Zakk. Zakk's guitar sound is not in the same tone and vibe as Dime's, again, my opinion.
This is the Phil Anselmo Experience featuring the music of Pantera. You're not going there to crush your skull like the 90's Pantera concerts on video. Guys who grew up liking this band are now older, the band is now older, we are in a different time and head space, this is a rebrand of the original band, this was music from 20+ years ago, which makes it retro to the bone.
My honest opinion is we didn't need Pantera 2.0 after all the shit that went down from 2001-2004. Spare us, please, form a supergroup and play something else, call it something else because Pantera, it's not!

You may remember mentions of a supposed Van Halen tribute with Jason Newsted circulating back in 2022, and Michael Anthony has now had his say on the bizarre situation.
At the time, fans were a tad perplexed that David Lee Roth and Alex Van Halen had reached out to someone other than Anthony, or even Wolfgang Van Halen, who played bass for the band as a teenager. According to Anthony, he didn’t even hear about the tribute until it was out there in the press.
Anthony will soon be heading out on the road for The Best Of All Worlds Tour with Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani, and Jason Bonham. The band will be playing classic Van Halen material.
Speaking to Ultimate Guitar ahead of the stint, Anthony reflected on the ‘reunion’ that never came to fruition: “It was really interesting because I had not even heard about that [concerning Newsted] until I heard about it in the press,” he states.
“And it was right around that time that I actually had gotten a call from Alex and Dave about doing a reunion. So I don’t know what was going on there. Because I think it was right around the same time that supposedly Jason had been asked. But I thought it was actually pretty interesting, because here I am, you know, ‘Hey!’ But I don’t know, who knows what was going on in their minds when they were trying to put something together. All I know is that they had spoken to me also. But things kind of fell apart before they were even able to be put together.”
