Masterpost: Frīg's Handmaidens Project
Who are the Handmaidens?
In the Prose Edda, twelve Goddesses are listed after Frigga as Ásynjur: Fulla, Gefjon, Hlín, Syn, Eir, Sága, Gná, Vár or Vór, Snotra, Vör, Lofn and Sjöfn. Modern Heathens sometimes refer to Them as Frigga's Handmaidens. (This is a piece of shared gnosis, not an historically attested term.) For many of the Twelve, this is all that survives in the way of attestations.
What is the Project?
Gradually over several years, and more intentionally recently, I have been building a devotional cultus around these Goddesses. As part of that, I've been putting together primers on each of the Twelve on my longform blog -- detailing Their surviving attestations, Old English God-names and epithets for Them, my own personal experiences and upg, a prayer, and devotional icon art -- as well as essays and modern myths exploring other aspects of Them and my cultus to Them.
Although I use Old English names for Them and honour Them in a syncretic heathen practice drawing on influences from across the British and Irish Isles, I hope these may be useful and/or interesting for practitioners working in a Norse, Continental, or other context. Or for anyone worshipping and building cultus to lesser-known and lesser-attested Gods!
I will update this post periodically, but if you like you can subscribe to my longform Wordpress blog for updates when I post.

The importance of Sigyn
So many people keep declaring how Sigyn is not important, and does not fit into the Norse world. As for writers, as we know, they keep erasing her from their stories, even from the scene she's supposed to be in, as they seem to agree she's not required to the narrative and a very facultative extra ^^'
However, while reading Brian Branston's book "The Gods of The North" (1955), he states this:
Tumblr media
"MAIN CONTRIBUTION"
Also:
Tumblr media
"Prized northern attribute of faithfulness"
I mean, there is a Norse goddess, Var, whose speciality is to PUNISH the people who broke their vows ^^' ALSO, to believe that values like Faithfulness and Loyalty are only important to Christians is SO wrong and insulting to Vikings?
(I mean, now, we know she's even older than the Vikings, belonging to the Germanic pantheon, who is very ancient, by Loki's side, but still)
One last thing, that might explain why Icelanders have a special interest in Sigyn <3
Tumblr media
So not only does she protect them from earthquakes, BUT ALSO FROM VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS???
WE STAN A VERY IMPORTANT GODDESS. Very useful. Essential, most of all when you live in a part of Midgard where there are a lot of volcanoes, I think ^^'
I think that Pompei & Herculaneum people would have been glad to have her by their side ^^'

Var's 2023 Fanfic Year In Review!
This year I posted 97,002 words over 28 works across 3 fandoms.
I wrote for 2 new fandoms this year (engage and tgaa).
My most common rating was T and my most common ship was Gen.
Here are my favorite fics that I posted each month (fic descriptions contain some tgaa/dgs spoilers):
January: none February: Loyalty (G, Gen, FE Engage) - After Ivy is defeated in battle against the Divine Dragon a second time, she finds herself stranded with her retainers, with nowhere to go. (1,069 words.)
March: Nicknames Best Forgotten (T, Gen, FE3H) - Yuri and Byleth take turns telling each other how they got their nicknames. (4,765 words.)
April: Yuri's Revenge (M, yurileth, FE3H) - When Yuri finds out that Count Rowe is being held in Fhirdiad, he decides to get his revenge on the man who hurt him so badly in the past. As he goes through some difficult emotions about it all, Byleth comforts him. (5,089 words.)
May: The Goddess's Gift (T, yurileth, FE3H) - After Byleth uses Divine Pulse one too many times, he becomes unwell, and starts to understand the lasting effects his goddess-given gift is having on him. (4,860 words.)
June: none July: none
August: Flayn's New Era (T, Gen, FE3H) - After Flayn overhears some troubling news, she ends up going on an unexpected journey... (12,154 words.)
September: The Slightest of Smiles (G, Gen, tgaa) - While celebrating a victory at Sholmes's suite, Susato and company are joined by unexpected visitors. (3,127 words)
October: Wine and Conversation (T, Gen, tgaa) - After getting snowed in, Kazuma and van Zieks pass the time with (perhaps too much) wine and conversation. (2,207 words)
November: Mentor & Apprentice (T, Gen, tgaa) - Barok van Zieks agrees to take on Kazuma as an apprentice for a year. Kazuma soon realizes that it will be a difficult year ahead. (12,132 words)
December: A Longing for Friendship (G, Gen, tgaa) - Just as Kazuma starts to become overwhelmed with doubts and loneliness, he finds comfort from someone unexpected. (4,628 words)
goals for next year:
keep writing!!! don't give in to self doubt!!! participate in fandom events!! (such as @aspec-ace-attorney week and @tgaa-gen-week!) and maybe perhaps become capable again of writing a fic longer than 12k. also i hope to read more and get better at reading longer works...
btw i encourage other writers to do something like this too! you can follow exactly what i did or do something different, but if you do pls tag me bc i wanna see!

Tumblr media
➔Day 5 of Cherry Blossom love. @niko-hugs is busy til Friday so I´ll be the only one who posts for now haha. Maybe I´ll take a break as well
➔Character: Hiori Yo
➔Prompt: God AU
➔Warnings: Hioris parents are trash fr.
➔Summary: Hiori just wanted a normal life but that wasn´t possible. He prayed and you granted him an opportunity he wasn't able to refuse.
Tumblr media
How pathetic. He couldn’t save himself and had to pray to a god to make his wishes come true. That wasn’t what Hiori wanted at all. But he had no other choice. Not when his life was on the line.
Hiori was just a normal boy until his family ended up in debt. Suddenly, all their hopes were on him. They talked so sweetly to him, wanting him to give them money. He found it disgusting how much a person was able to change with money alone.
He felt pressured to give up all his life savings. The savings that they had told him to keep in case he ever needed them. But that wasn’t how he wanted to spend it all.
It was like he was buying his parent’s love. That wasn’t how it should have been. But his parents collected so much debt already that the debt collectors were after him as well.
That’s why he was now begging for his life after he had been stabbed in an alleyway. Was his life really that worthless? Why did he work so much? Why was he always careful that everyone liked him if it was all useless in the end anyway.
That’s when he met “Var” for the first time. The goddess of contracts and oaths. Or as he was allowed to call her, Y/n.
“I´ll let you live, but you have to become a god. That’s the contract I´m offering to you”, you said as you looked at him. You reached your hand out towards him. If he took it, he would bind himself to the contract.
That’s how he became “Forseti”, the god of justice and the right help of “Var”. That’s how gods were born. Ordinary humans in misery were either being reborn or given a god title. If a god dies, there had to be a replacement.
He shouldn’t call himself lucky, but he was since “Forseti” had died at the moment when he needed the help. That’s why you were so kind to give him the title.
Now he was working by your side, serving justice to all the people that were brought to the heavenly principles.
“Y/n!”, he called out to you with a smile. He didn’t know when it started but he fell in love with you. He loved listening to your stories when you were still alive. You taught him how to be a god. You were his savior and he couldn’t be more grateful.
“Hey there Hiori. Back for another cup of tea”, you chuckled when you saw him walking towards you. He was a cheerful man, so different from how you first met him. But you were grateful that you were able to see his true smile.
“Yes. Today was exhausting, wasn’t it? So we should relax a little”, he explained with a small blush. How cute. You smiled fondly as you walked towards him, placing a little kiss on his forehead.
Your love was forbidden. Two gods weren’t able to be together if the first gods weren’t. That’s how the current gods were stuck in relationships that they didn’t even want. Being a god wasn’t all fun and games after all.
But your love was innocent. Nothing more than a small crush. That’s what both of you told yourselves. As long as the other didn’t feel the same you were safe.
But the fates were cruel. They brought you down. They killed you.
A normal human wasn’t able to kill a god, but why did a human succeed in that task? The fates must have played a part in that story.
He tried, he really tried to stay happy, but it seemed like his life lost its meaning again. Why should he continue living without you? Why did the fates kill you?
Hiori who didn’t know what to do in his misery was careless and defenseless. The humans attacked him at that moment. That’s when he accepted the death that he was so scared of as a human. But why did he feel at peace now? He almost felt happy that he was going to die.
Maybe he now was finally able to see you again…
·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙ ✩ *̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙
Being in the blue lock project was his escape from his home. The only problem was that he was surrounded by people who were obsessed with the sport he was forced to take part in.
He was taking a walk outside, needing a break from everything that was going on around him right now. That’s when he bumped into someone.
“Oh. I´m sorry”, he said before his eyes widened. You were standing in front of him, but he didn’t know who you were.
But why did you feel so familiar? You looked at him with the same expression.
“This might sound weird, but do I know you?”

An Updated Basic Sigyn Info List
Information on her from Snorri Sturluson/Norse Myth:
She is a Goddess, listed as one of the Asynja or Aesir Goddesses (meaning she was likely not of Vanaheim but instead of Asgard.)
She married Loki and had two sons, Vali and Narvi/Narfi.
Eventually, both boys were murdered (some believe only Narfi was killed and Vali was left as a wolf to roam and bear the grief of what he'd done to his brother.) The intestines of Narfi were turned into chains and with them, Loki was bound to three boulders in a cave. A serpent was hung over his head to drip venom on him until Ragnarok. Sigyn took up a bowl and joined her husband at his side to catch the poison, trying to shield him. However, she must leave his side to empty the bowl during which time Loki thrashes so violently from the pain that he causes earthquakes.
What happens to Sigyn after Loki is freed and begins Ragnarok is unknown. It is assumed she dies along with the rest.
One of her kennings is Incantation-Fetter. This implies some talent with magic, specifically binding magic, and warding and protection. This kenning comes from Loki being mentioned several times as "The Burden of Incantation Fetter's Arms."
Her name means “Victory Bringer”, “Victorious Girlfriend” and “Friend of Victory.”
Her parents and origins are unknown. Nothing else survives that may point to the ways in which her nature and roles were conceived of by the Norse. Nothing survives of her worship.
Things not proven but widely believed in:
Sigyn being a Goddess of Constancy and Compassion, though other popular beliefs are that she is a Goddess of Loyalty and Devotion among other virtues.
Sigyn appears in the 9th century skaldic poem Haustlöng from pagan times, written by the skald Þjóðólfr of Hvinir. Due to this early connection with Loki, Sigyn has been theorized as a god dating back to an older form of Germanic paganism before being transferred to Norse.
The mid-11th century Gosforth Cross located in Cumbria, England, has been interpreted as featuring various figures from Norse mythology. The bottom portion of the west side of the cross features a depiction of a long-haired female, kneeling figure holding an object above another prostrate, bound figure. Above and to their left is a knotted serpent. This has been interpreted as Sigyn soothing the bound Loki.
Although there are a number of different interpretations out there, most depictions of her show her to be blonde and with blue eyes.
She is often described as being significantly younger than Loki.
Unverified Personal Gnosis of believers and worshipers:
She is of the Vanir, and Njord was her Father.
Her marriage with Loki is not abusive; in fact many Lokeans often get the feeling of fierce protectiveness from Loki when it comes to Sigyn. He is known to not really introduce anyone to her until he deems it safe.
However, those who do get the chance to work with Sigyn comment on how warm, safe and comforting her presence is. She also helps give them inner strength.
She reveals herself in one of two ways: either as a delightfully child-like young girl or, conversely, as a wife, implacable, resilient, post the ordeal of the cave, burdened by the overwhelming grief of the loss of her children.
A list of ways to honor Sigyn (X) (X)
Things invented by Marvel Comics:
Her relationship/engagement to Theoric and the murder of him by Loki.
Being tricked into marriage by Loki (and honestly, the way she was treated throughout it.)
Being known for the first time as the Goddess of Fidelity.
According to the entry in Kid Loki’s profile in “Avengers: Roll Call #1″, it is mentioned Sigyn is deceased.
Fandom Invented Things, but widely believed in:
Freyja is her mother, and the dwarf Iwaldi is her father. She is sister to Nanna, Syn, Lofn, Var, Snotra and is Princess of Vanaheim.
Because the meanings of her name involve the word “Victory”, some think it implies her having ties to the Valkyrie and being a Goddess of Victory.

“This… Lady Var. Are you certain she is not an agent of Odin?” Kratos inquired from his seat across the table. Laid open in front of him was Atreus’ journal, complete with the thoughts and ramblings of his son, depicting the very topic of conversation. Brok and Sindri glanced to one another. “She has been in Asgard for her entire life, has she not?”
Mimir, peering over at the contents himself, clucked his tongue. “I wouldn’t think so, brother. The Var Goddesses have been endlessly persecuted by Odin over the centuries. I would know; he bragged about it quite fondly during our time together. He was very single minded about killing them all before they reached their full power.”
“Huh?” Brok crossed his arms. “Whaddaya mean?”
“The first Var goddess, some thousands of years ago, meddled in Odin’s affairs in Alfheim,” the head explained. His face contorted into one of deep thought, as if recalling the memories required him to delve into parts of his life that he was not to keen on reminiscing upon. “I only know this because I was there when it happened. Her name was Siv, and she was a Valkyrie—powerful, elusive, and angry. She… was not happy with some of the things he was doing, so she stepped in before things could go too far. In theory, anyway.”
 “The first?” Kratos rumbled.
“Aye, brother, the first. The Var goddesses go through a cycle of rebirth not unlike that of the phoenix, but it’s been so long that I’ve nearly forgotten how it came to be that way.” Mimir turned his gaze towards the book again. “But as I was saying, Siv intervened during one of Odin’s broken vows. The Var goddesses are not evil beings, you must know, and are more like—“
“The peace keeper or executioner,” the god of war interrupted. “Atreus explained this to me.”
“Yes well, that’s not exactly… correct.” Mimir hesitated. “It’s more along the lines of ‘if you break my vows, I will destroy your soul’. See, Odin was threatened by this—Siv could take a soul and dessicate it more thoroughly than any ounce of seidr I have ever seen. There would be no afterlife, no peace for them when she killed them. She was the bastardization of a Valkyrie and her sisters despised her for it.”
Sindri’s brow furrowed. He sat down at the table, rolling a wire brush between his hands. “I didn’t know this part. Lady Var, she… explained she was bound by the oath and no other.”
“And she was telling the truth, lad, as much as she could of it. I imagine Odin isn’t working on the full idea of things,” Mimir soothed. Kratos huffed. “Bound by oaths, yes, but only the ones she makes with herself or the ones she chooses to observe. If you could trap a Var goddess you would have a veritable power source in your hands; each of them has a special gift more different than the last. More special as the years go on and they are reborn into something new.”
Kratos lifted the book and stared at the charcoal drawing. Nothing discerning stood out to him except for the artistic rendition of the dress she wore. “And she is with Odin now.”
“Bein’ married, yeah.” Brok lifted his cup of ale and saluted the air mockingly. “The All-Fucker knows he needs to keep ‘er there, so he binds ‘er up with marriage vows to Heimdall so she can’t leave.”
“Oh dear.” Mimir’s eyes widened. “He’s marrying her to Heimdall?”
“Yes, when she came here she had been crying, and had bruises around her throat,” Sindri explained softly. His gaze was far away, fixated on the stool across from him where you had sat previously, eating the food and drink they had given you with gusto. “She said he was not happy with the decision and blamed her for it.”
“Bunch’a hogwash, the whole thing!” The blue dwarf slammed his drink down, sending droplets of alcohol flying into the air. “She ain’t done nothin’ to deserve this!”
“In Odin’s mind, she very well may have. He despises those he can’t keep under his all-knowing thumb.” Mimir paused. “Though, lads, I don’t truly know how we can help her from here.”
A silence seeped over the table, impenetrable.
“This… goddess,” Kratos began slowly,”she is powerful, yes?”
“Dunno. Ain’t seen her in centuries until a week ago.” Brok shrugged. “But she was doin’ some mighty strong magic ‘fore Odin snatched ‘er up.”
“As long as she doesn’t step on any toes, she’ll be alright, my friends. She’s survived in Asgard this long, right?”
 ***
Heimdall trudged alongside you in the light of dawn with a scowl on his face. That punch had silenced him for all of five seconds before you were walking off, fury in your step and a fine tremor in your fingers. Odin’s decision to have him supervise you was a foolish one, especially if he was going to open his mouth as he was and mock every little thing you did along the way to the beach—even stop to see the sunrise.
“Move along, stupid girl, we have places to be. You can see the sunrise literally every day from oh, I don’t know, anywhere else.”
You ignored him and watched as the sun peaked over the clouds. The cast of pale orange among the darkness was one of your favorite things to witness, present company not included. The little dragons snoozing on the roosts within the walls were beginning to wake, alerting the little folk to the rising of the sun and the dawn of a new day. The sunrise and sunsets in Vanaheim had been gorgeous, when Skoll and Hati would take to the sky and chase the sun and moon to their conclusions. The two wolves, the last you had heard, had been unable to complete the ritual since Odin had interfered with the altars some time ago.
After a moment of reveling in Heimdall’s silent irritation, you entered the lift and allowed him to pull the lever to send the both of you down. You remained quiet, the knuckles of your fist still aching painfully in protest from hitting your now husband in the stomach. While he did not have the rotund belly of Thor or the sinewy musculature of Baldur, it still hurt quite a bit to hit him like that. Something in the spells on the collar was diluting some of the pain, to a degree, but when you flexed your fingers the sting came back full force.
“Was it really necessary to hit me?”
“Was it necessary to strangle me? Or walk out on me on our wedding night as you so expertly did. I was being pitied for days after that.”
Heimdall deliberately avoided looking at you. “You did bite me. It was only fair, was it not?”
“No.” The blandness in your tone forced him to look at you, then. He was mildly surprised to see you staring at him, but not completely—it was as if you were looking through him at to the sunset behind him. “I should have killed you and been done with it.”
Something in those words made him uneasy. “Killing me would kill you, you’re aware? And you can no longer be reborn, little dog.”
Yet your blank face remained. “Are you certain about that, gullintanni?  Would you like to put it to the test?”
“I didn’t take you to be suicidal.”
“That’s because I am not her.”
***
“Brok, Sindri!” You called desperately. Yggdrasil twisted and turned endlessly, the flickering of your bodily form only momentarily hindered by the falling leaves. Each door that you passed seemed the same as the last, and you were running out of time—quickly. Leaving your body in Siv’s care had been a risk you hadn’t known you could take, but now that you had, you would do your best to warn your friends that you had been trapped more firmly than you could have anticipated. Your eyes flew to a familiar form sneaking among the branches. “Atreus!”
He whirled around, but there was no one there. “Huh?”
 “Atreus!”
 “Who’s there?”
“It is I, the lady Var. I do not blame you for not remembering me, but I am running out of time. Please, listen!”
His eyes flew to and fro, seeking your figure, but you were nowhere to be found. “How are you doing this?”
“I have no time to explain. Tell them that Odin has bound me with the Collar of Repentance. Tell them that he has stopped my rebirth cycle. Tell them…” Your voice cracked. “Tell them that I can’t help them like I wanted to.”
“Wait, what’s the Collar of Repentance? And what do you mean you can’t help us?!”
 “I’m sorry, Atreus.”
***
“You’re not her,” Heimdall repeated slowly. Your eyes flickered gold, green, back to gold. “Then who are you?”
A feral smile that was not typical of you crawled onto your face. “In time, son of Angeyja, Atla, Eistla, Eyrgjafa, Gjalp, Greip, Imðr, Jarnsaxa, and Ulfrún. In time. For now, I would enjoy the rest of the life you have left. My descendant may be bound, but I am not, nor will I ever be.”
Heimdall stiffened at the mention of his mothers. “How do you know those names?”
“The same way I know that you, above all, desire your father’s honest approval.” A shrug. Casually, the not-you reached behind you and pulled a shrieking green, crystalline bird from out of thin air. In one motion, your hand crushed the bird to dust, green powder lining the furs of your dress. “I’m inside you, now.”
Before he could demand what she had meant by that—the not you—you blinked and, slowly, a confused expression stole across your face like a thief in the night. You reached up and rubbed your face with one hand, glancing around the lift. “What…?” It was soft.
So you had been unaware of what happened, then. Heimdall narrowed his eyes as you shook your head, his gaze flying to the space that the green bird had been sitting harmlessly on the railing behind you. So the All-Father had seen it, too; but what could it have been?  What had possessed you in such a way? Whatever it had been, it made something new raise its head in the back of his mind—fear.
You were violent, yes, but you were weak. Your only defense was having the advantage of his foresight not working on you. You had no magic, no future rebirth, only the ability to see vows and punish those who broke them. But the thing that had been behind your eyes… he had watched, felt, the power crawl out of your pores.
It had felt like death, like darkness; a dying star.
 It had felt like annihilation.
But now you were confused, docile, that hostile aura draining out of you to be replaced by something less… cruel. He watched the moment you realized something had happened, and your frown was more pronounced. But you did not say a word. Instead, you shook your head, rubbed your temple, and looked out among the wetlands with resignation in your eyes.
It was something to keep an eye on. But now he had to keep his guard up, more than before; he could not mindlessly threaten you without risking whatever that had been happening again. You pulled your furs around yourself tightly, and he dismissed the thought. Father trusted him enough to keep watch over you and make sure you didn’t get in his way.
“This way,” you said and stepped out of the lift, following a destination only you had in mind. He followed, his mind strangely quiet for once, and observed as your posture slumped and your walking grew less rigid. Outside the walls, you seemed to change—you were sullen, sulky. “Keep up.”
And he did. Over the grasslands and streams, you led him to the shores of Asgard, where two children sat playing in the pale sand. They were young Midgardians, no older than ten or twelve years of age, and they fought each other with driftwood sticks and dirt.
“Fight me, giant!” One boomed in an imitation of Thor. He waved the stick around as the God of Thunder would his hammer, making a face. “I will use Mjolnir and kill you where you stand!”
The other child, a little girl, roared in defiance. “No! I, Ymir, will kill you, Aesir god!”
Their sticks clacked together with childish skill. They moved up and down the beach, laughing and kicking up sand, and you watched with a small smile on your face as they played. The content of the things they were saying may have been dark, but they were happy—could you truly allow Ragnarok to snatch such happiness away from them? They would be Odin’s fodder, his shield against those who knew mercy and pity as a strength.
You caught a wisp of Heimdall’s thoughts from where he stood some feet from you, leaning against a rock formation.
… That is not how the story goes, stupid Midgardian children.
But the story he knew was also inaccurate. You, however, too caught up in watching the children fight and play, did not stop to think too hard about the stories he had no doubt heard from Odin’s side. Instead, you watched the girl plop down into the sand, exhausted. The boy followed her willingly, tossing his stick into the water.
“We have to do this every day, okay?” She said, sticking her arm out in offer. Her little face was screwed up in determination. “Until we get strong enough to get inside the walls. Together.”
 The boy nodded. “Right!”
And so a promise was made. You watched the little white string blossom to life between them and observed until they eventually decided they had enough rest and moved further down the beach. Once they were well out of view, you stepped off the grass and into the sand, approaching the ocean cautiously.
“What are you doing?” Heimdall demanded with a scowl. “You’ve observed whatever it was you came here for. Now we go back.”
“Shut the Hel up.” You closed your eyes to the faint breeze wafting over the water. It brought you scents of salt, of rain and humidity and cold. “I have no intention of going back into those walls just for the rest of the Aesir to judge me for your wrongdoings.”
His scowl deepened. “You are no extension of me.”
“I agree.” You opened your eyes. The words came out unbidden. “You are a pathetic pantomime of your father. A fascimile of a god. You sit and stay, like a good boy, but I know it is only because he has no use for you other than to sit you up on that hideous wall and let you play protector. I wonder if you die, if he will ever mourn you as he did his little closer—Baldur. I think he would not.”
“Shut your whore mouth.” Heimdall was quick to snatch you by the back of your neck, shifting his hand forward to grip your jaw. It popped threateningly under the pressure. You met his gaze without fear, feeling too bold in your words to ever allow him a victory. “You know nothing of my relationship with my father.”
“I know enough.” You shrugged loosely. “Everyone knows how Odin sent his child up to the wall the moment he finished learning how to use his powers. The youngest child; the weakest, weaker than even the blind. Born from a fling of a union between Odin and your mothers because he could never honor them, never get over Freya. He’s a monster, and you… you are becoming just like him.”
 You stared at him, considering.
“Odin doesn’t need another son… just another tool.”
When you pulled away from him, he didn’t try to stop you. His hand dropped to his side as you walked away, the tiniest knot in your marriage vow unlinking. Doubt. It was small, but it was there, and even the smallest chips in the strongest wall would bring it crumbling down eventually. You would destroy his as he had destroyed yours.
‘Good,’ Siv spoke in your mind as you approached the lift some time later. Heimdall had not followed you, so you leaned against the railing to wait. ‘And now we begin.’

Norns
The Norns are deities in Norse mythology responsible for shaping the course of human destinies.
In the Völuspá, the three primary Norns Urðr (Wyrd), Verðandi, and Skuld draw water from their sacred well to nourish the tree at the center of the cosmos and prevent it from rot. These three Norns are described as powerful maiden giantesses (Jotuns) whose arrival from Jötunheimr ended the golden age of the gods. The Norns are also described as maidens of Mögþrasir in the Vafþrúðnismál.
Tumblr media
Beside the three Norns tending Yggdrasill, pre-Christian Scandinavians attested to Norns who visit a newborn child in order to determine the person's future. These Norns could be malevolent or benevolent: the former causing tragic events in the world while the latter were kind and protective.
There are a number of surviving Old Norse sources that relate to the norns. The most important sources are the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda. The latter contains pagan poetry where the norns are frequently referred to, while the former contains, in addition to pagan poetry, retellings, descriptions and commentaries by the 12th and 13th century Icelandic chieftain and scholar Snorri Sturluson.
A skaldic reference to the norns appears in Hvini's poem in Ynglingatal 24 found in Ynglingasaga 47, where King Halfdan is put to rest by his men at Borró. This reference brings in the phrase "norna dómr" which means "judgment of the nornir". In most cases, when the norns pass judgment, it means death to those who have been judged - in this case, Halfdan. Along with being associated with being bringers of death, Bek-Pedersen suggests that this phrase brings in a quasi-legal aspect to the nature of the norns. This legal association is employed quite frequently within skaldic and eddic sources. This phrase can also be seen as a threat, as death is the final and inevitable decision that the norns can make with regard to human life. Ok til Þings Þriðja jǫfri Hvedðrungs mær ór heimi bauð pás Halfdan, sás Holtum bjó, norna dóms of notit hafði. Ok buðlung á Borrói sigrhafendr síðan fólu. And to a meeting Hveðrungr's maid called the third king from the world, at the time when Halfdan, he who lived at Holt, had embraced the judgment of the nornir; and at Borró the victorious men later did hide the king.
The Poetic Edda is valuable in representing older material in poetry from which Snorri tapped information in the Prose Edda. Like Gylfaginning, the Poetic Edda mentions the existence of many lesser norns beside the three main norns. Moreover, it also agrees with Gylfaginning by telling that they were of several races and that the dwarven norns were the daughters of Dvalin. It also suggests that the three main norns were giantesses (female Jotuns).
Fáfnismál contains a discussion between the hero Sigurd and the dragon Fafnir who is dying from a mortal wound from Sigurd. The hero asks Fafnir of many things, among them the nature of the norns. Fafnir explains that they are many and from several races: Sigurðr kvað: 12. "Segðu mér, Fáfnir, alls þik fróðan kveða ok vel margt vita, hverjar ro þær nornir, er nauðgönglar ro ok kjósa mæðr frá mögum." - Fáfnir kvað: 13. "Sundrbornar mjök segi ek nornir vera, eigu-t þær ætt saman; sumar eru áskunngar, sumar alfkunngar, sumar dætr Dvalins." Sigurth spake: 12. "Tell me then, Fafnir, for wise thou art famed, And much thou knowest now: Who are the Norns who are helpful in need, And the babe from the mother bring?" - Fafnir spake: 13. "Of many births the Norns must be, Nor one in race they were; Some to gods, others to elves are kin, And Dvalin's daughters some."
It appears from Völuspá and Vafþrúðnismál that the three main norns were not originally goddesses but giants (Jotuns), and that their arrival ended the early days of bliss for the gods, but that they come for the good of humankind.
Völuspá relates that three giants of huge might are reported to have arrived to the gods from Jotunheim: 8. Tefldu í túni, teitir váru, var þeim vettergis vant ór gulli, uns þrjár kvámu þursa meyjar ámáttkar mjök ór Jötunheimum. 8. In their dwellings at peace they played at tables, Of gold no lack did the gods then know,-- Till thither came up giant-maids three, Huge of might, out of Jotunheim.
Vafþrúðnismál probably refers to the norns when it talks of maiden giants who arrive to protect the people of earth as protective spirits (hamingjas): 49. "Þríar þjóðár falla þorp yfir meyja Mögþrasis; hamingjur einar þær er í heimi eru, þó þær með jötnum alask." 49. O’er people’s dwellings three descend of Mögthrasir’s maidens, the sole Hamingiur who are in the world, although with Jötuns nurtured.
The Völuspá contains the names of the three main Norns referring to them as maidens like Vafþrúðnismál probably does: 20. Þaðan koma meyjar margs vitandi þrjár ór þeim sæ, er und þolli stendr; Urð hétu eina, aðra Verðandi, - skáru á skíði, - Skuld ina þriðju; þær lög lögðu, þær líf kuru alda börnum, örlög seggja. 20. Thence come the maidens mighty in wisdom, Three from the dwelling down 'neath the tree; Urth is one named, Verthandi the next,-- On the wood they scored,-- and Skuld the third. Laws they made there, and life allotted To the sons of men, and set their fates.
The norns visited each newly born child to allot his or her future, and in Helgakviða Hundingsbana I, the hero Helgi Hundingsbane has just been born and norns arrive at the homestead: 2. Nótt varð í bæ, nornir kómu, þær er öðlingi aldr of skópu; þann báðu fylki frægstan verða ok buðlunga beztan þykkja. - 3. Sneru þær af afli örlögþáttu, þá er borgir braut í Bráluni; þær of greiddu gullin símu ok und mánasal miðjan festu. - 4. Þær austr ok vestr enda fálu, þar átti lofðungr land á milli; brá nift Nera á norðrvega einni festi, ey bað hon halda. 2. 'Twas night in the dwelling, and Norns there came, Who shaped the life of the lofty one; They bade him most famed of fighters all And best of princes ever to be. - 3. Mightily wove they the web of fate, While Bralund's towns were trembling all; And there the golden threads they wove, And in the moon's hall fast they made them. - 4. East and west the ends they hid, In the middle the hero should have his land; And Neri's kinswoman northward cast A chain, and bade it firm ever to be.
In Helgakviða Hundingsbana II, Helgi Hundingsbane blames the norns for the fact that he had to kill Sigrún's father Högni and brother Bragi in order to wed her: 26 "Er-at þér at öllu, alvitr, gefit, - þó kveð ek nökkvi nornir valda -: fellu í morgun at Frekasteini Bragi ok Högni, varð ek bani þeira. "Maid, not fair is all thy fortune, The Norris I blame that this should be; This morn there fell at Frekastein Bragi and Hogni beneath my hand.
Like Snorri Sturluson stated in Gylfaginning, people's fate depended on the benevolence or the malevolence of particular norns. In Reginsmál, the water dwelling dwarf Andvari blames his plight on an evil norn, presumably one of the daughters of Dvalin: 2. "Andvari ek heiti, Óinn hét minn faðir, margan hef ek fors of farit; aumlig norn skóp oss í árdaga, at ek skylda í vatni vaða." 2. "Andvari am I, and Oin my father, In many a fall have I fared; An evil Norn in olden days Doomed me In waters to dwell."
Sigurðarkviða hin skamma
Another instance of Norns being blamed for an undesirable situation appears in Sigurðarkviða hin skamma, where the valkyrie Brynhild blames malevolent norns for her long yearning for the embrace of Sigurd: 7. Orð mæltak nú, iðrumk eftir þess: kván er hans Guðrún, en ek Gunnars; ljótar nornir skópu oss langa þrá." 7. "The word I have spoken; soon shall I rue it, His wife is Guthrun, and Gunnar's am I; Ill Norns set for me long desire."
Brynhild's solution was to have Gunnarr and his brothers, the lords of the Burgundians, kill Sigurd and afterwards to commit suicide in order to join Sigurd in the afterlife. Her brother Atli (Attila the Hun) avenged her death by killing the lords of the Burgundians, but since he was married to their sister Guðrún, Atli would soon be killed by her. In Guðrúnarkviða II, the Norns actively enter the series of events by informing Atli in a dream that his wife would kill him. The description of the dream begins with this stanza: "Svá mik nýliga nornir vekja," - vílsinnis spá vildi, at ek réða, - "hugða ek þik, Guðrún Gjúka dóttir, læblöndnum hjör leggja mik í gögnum." 39. "Now from sleep the Norns have waked me With visions of terror,-- To thee will I tell them; Methought thou, Guthrun, Gjuki's daughter, With poisoned blade didst pierce my body."
After having killed both her husband Atli and their sons, Guðrún blames the Norns for her misfortunes, as in Guðrúnarhvöt, where Guðrún talks of trying to escaping the wrath of the norns by trying to kill herself: 13. Gekk ek til strandar, gröm vark nornum, vilda ek hrinda stríð grið þeira; hófu mik, né drekkðu, hávar bárur, því ek land of sték, at lifa skyldak. 13. "To the sea I went, my heart full sore For the Norns, whose wrath I would now escape; But the lofty billows bore me undrowned, Till to land I came, so I longer must live.
Guðrúnarhvöt deals with how Guðrún incited her sons to avenge the cruel death of their sister Svanhild. In Hamðismál, her sons' expedition to the Gothic king Ermanaric to exact vengeance is fateful. Knowing that he is about to die at the hands of the Goths, her son Sörli talks of the cruelty of the norns: 29. "Ekki hygg ek okkr vera ulfa dæmi, at vit mynim sjalfir of sakask sem grey norna, þá er gráðug eru í auðn of alin. - 30. Vel höfum vit vegit, stöndum á val Gotna, ofan eggmóðum, sem ernir á kvisti; góðs höfum tírar fengit, þótt skylim nú eða í gær deyja; kveld lifir maðr ekki eftir kvið norna." - 31. Þar fell Sörli at salar gafli, enn Hamðir hné at húsbaki. 29. "In fashion of wolves it befits us not Amongst ourselves to strive, Like the hounds of the Norns, that nourished were In greed mid wastes so grim. - 30. "We have greatly fought, o'er the Goths do we stand By our blades laid low, like eagles on branches; Great our fame though we die today or tomorrow; None outlives the night when the Norris have spoken." - 31. Then Sorli beside the gable sank, And Hamther fell at the back of the house.
Since the norns were beings of ultimate power who were working in the dark, it should be no surprise that they could be referred to in charms, as they are by Sigrdrífa in Sigrdrífumál: 17. Á gleri ok á gulli ok á gumna heillum, í víni ok í virtri ok vilisessi, á Gugnis oddi ok á Grana brjósti, á nornar nagli ok á nefi uglu. 17. On glass and on gold, and on goodly charms, In wine and in beer, and on well-loved seats, On Gungnir's point, and on Grani's breast, On the nails of Norns, and the night-owl's beak.
In the part of Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda which is called Gylfaginning, Gylfi, the king of Sweden, has arrived at Valhalla calling himself Gangleri. There, he receives an education in Norse mythology from what is Odin in the shape of three men. They explain to Gylfi that there are three main norns, but also many others of various races, æsir, elves and dwarves: A hall stands there, fair, under the ash by the well, and out of that hall come three maids, who are called thus: Urdr, Verdandi, Skuld; these maids determine the period of men's lives: we call them Norns; but there are many norns: those who come to each child that is born, to appoint his life; these are of the race of the gods, but the second are of the Elf-people, and the third are of the kindred of the dwarves, as it is said here: Most sundered in birth I say the Norns are; They claim no common kin: Some are of Æsir-kin, some are of Elf-kind, Some are Dvalinn's daughters. Then said Gangleri: "If the Norns determine the weirds of men, then they apportion exceeding unevenly, seeing that some have a pleasant and luxurious life, but others have little worldly goods or fame; some have long life, others short." Hárr said: "Good norns and of honorable race appoint good life; but those men that suffer evil fortunes are governed by evil norns."
The three main norns take water out of the well of Urd and water Yggdrasil: It is further said that these Norns who dwell by the Well of Urdr take water of the well every day, and with it that clay which lies about the well, and sprinkle it over the Ash, to the end that its limbs shall not wither nor rot; for that water is so holy that all things which come there into the well become as white as the film which lies within the egg-shell,--as is here said: I know an Ash standing called Yggdrasill, A high tree sprinkled with snow-white clay; Thence come the dews in the dale that fall-- It stands ever green above Urdr's Well. That dew which falls from it onto the earth is called by men honey-dew, and thereon are bees nourished. Two fowls are fed in Urdr's Well: they are called Swans, and from those fowls has come the race of birds which is so called."
Snorri furthermore informs the reader that the youngest norn, Skuld, is in effect also a valkyrie, taking part in the selection of warriors from the slain: These are called Valkyrs: them Odin sends to every battle; they determine men's feyness and award victory. Gudr and Róta and the youngest Norn, she who is called Skuld, ride ever to take the slain and decide fights.
Some of the legendary sagas also contain references to the norns. The Hervarar saga contains a poem named Hlöðskviða, where the Gothic king Angantýr defeats a Hunnish invasion led by his Hunnish half-brother Hlöðr. Knowing that his sister, the shieldmaiden Hervör, is one of the casualties, Angantýr looks at his dead brother and laments the cruelty of the norns: 32. Bölvat er okkr, bróðir, bani em ek þinn orðinn; þat mun æ uppi; illr er dómr norna." "We are cursed, kinsman, your killer am I! It will never be forgotten; the Norns' doom is evil."
In younger legendary sagas, such as Norna-Gests þáttr and Hrólfs saga kraka, the norns appear to have been synonymous with völvas (witches, female shamans). In Norna-Gests þáttr, where they arrive at the birth of the hero to shape his destiny, the norns are not described as weaving the web of fate, instead Norna appears to be interchangeable and possibly a synonym of vala (völva).
One of the last legendary sagas to be written down, the Hrólfs saga kraka talks of the norns simply as evil witches. When the evil half-elven princess Skuld assembles her army to attack Hrólfr Kraki, it contains in addition to undead warriors, elves and norns.
This romantic representation of the norns depicts one of them (Verdandi according to the runes below) with wings, contrary to folklore.
The belief in the norns as bringers of both gain and loss would last beyond Christianization, as testifies the runic inscription N 351 M from the Borgund stave church: Þórir carved these runes on the eve of Olaus-mass, when he travelled past here. The norns did both good and evil, great toil ... they created for me.
Three women carved on the right panel of Franks Casket, an Anglo-Saxon whalebone chest from the eighth century, have been identified by some scholars as being three norns.

Who's thara and Chris? And why have I not heard of them before? (I haven't followed the main DC comic books for years... I'm so lost).
Alrighty so!
Chris Kent is the adopted son of Clark and Lois Kent. His biological parents are, I kid you not, General Zod and his wife, Ursa. He was born in the Phantom Zone (he actually becomes Nightwing, definitely suggest looking him up!) I’d like to think he and Kon show up around the same time, turning Jon into the youngest of three boys (Chris is the oldest, Kon the middle).
Thara Ak-Var is actually Kara’s best friend from Krypton! After her parents were killed and she he had these prophetic dreams of a boy concieved and born in the phantom zone. Basically a lot of things happen, but she’s a soldier in New Krypton. She also becomes the avatar for Flamebird, the Kryptonian Goddess of Destruction.
Chris just joins his brothers in the “My type is dark-haired beauty who gives orders and kicks ass.” Just like their father 😂
I’m pretty sure they dated in the comics, I just decided to keep them together. I mean, girl was dreaming about him!!
In addition, because I thought it would be funny to see, they adopted three kids (two half-Brainiacs, one meta) and had three of their own. Just to, like, put it in perspective for the biological kids: Thara and Chris are both full Kryptonians.
Basically, in my mind? Clark and Lois end up with:
three full Kryptonian grandkids
two half Brainiacs grandsons
one Tamaranean/Kryptonian/Human granddaughter(the only one without any powers, but jumps off buildings for fun)
one Kryptonian/human/Amazonian granddaughter (Tim and Kon’s daughter, Grace)
four meta grandchildren.

The Erasure of Sigyn
So today I found those two vids on youtube, talking about Norse gods, and I was rather happy when I realized they were also taking time to speak of less known gods and goddesses.
Nice!
Until I realized something.
And it’s kind of crazy, really.
Because, GUESS WHO did not make the cut, ONCE AGAIN.
Yeah, our girl Sigyn.
EVEN WHEN TALKING OF LOKI’S PUNISHMENT, even while putting a painting of Loki’s punishment, with SIGYN holding the bowl... they will erase her.
Damn. I wonder who’s that lady with the bowl... And Nari’s mother? WHO KNOWS???
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3wpJuDjnlg&ab_channel=MythosTheHistorian
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq2I8nqXTeo&ab_channel=WatchMojo.com
You know, Marvel erasing Sigyn in their newest comics, and in the MCU, that’s hard (but maybe a good idea, since they seem to HATE her SO MUCH, and for no reason).
Writers who have a crush on Loki and want their self-insert to be his one true love, so they erase his beloved wife... That’s a bit creepy, but ok, I guess.
But here??? You talk about the ONE SCENE she’s in, and you can’t even name her?
And then, they name all those less known Norse deities, like Hoenir, Var, Sfjon, Lofn... but not Sigyn??? Just WHY?
Tumblr media
Challenge to all people who fancy talking about Norse myths: say Sigyn’s name once. JUST ONCE. Go ahead. I dare you.
Is this so damn hard???
Even if you don’t think she was Goddess of Victory (well, she was, but that’s another subject), even if you think she’s NoT THat ImPOrtANt, and that Loki did not love her (LLLIIIEEES)... the least you can do is admit she DID play a part in helping Loki during his punishment.
If not, we end up with scenes like these... And I’m SURE Odin would have LOVED that, eh? BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED.

SIGYN WAS THERE TO HELP LOKI.
Whether you like it or not...
