There you are, Dark!
I was thinking we could maybe take a walk, chat a bit, enjoy this lovely autumn weather.
I also brought a book I thought you might enjoy, I certainly enjoyed it
(Holds up a copy of Grimoire Noir by Vera Greentea and Yana Bogatch)
*sign language* I-im sorry but who are you?-
*Dark is currently re-wrapping their shoulder, they are in a Calabash with RDC and are trying to fight their way out with RDC to finally rest, to Finaly process everything that’s happened*

Books read so far this week
Go The Distance by Jen Calonita. A spin on the Disney adaption of Hercules where Meg has to become a goddess to date Wonder Boy. 3/5 stars
The Grace Year by Kim Liggett. I was expecting dystopia, and I got dystopia - with a hefty dash of feminism and commentary on how misogyny is kinda poisoning society as a whole. 3/5 stars
The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller. Enemies to lovers, romance, adventure, fantasy, and political scandals. 5/5 stars.
The [Un]Popular Vote by Jasper Sanchez.
Grimoire Noir by Vera Greentea and Yana Bogatch. Quick easy read about a boy trying to find his kidnapped sister in a town where all the girls have magic powers. (Kinda makes me wonder how being trans in that society would affect things... do you have to be a biological female, or does it depend on your gender identity?) 4/5 stars.

Middle School Monday: Grimoire Noir by Vera Greentea & Yana Bogatch
In the town of Blackwell, it’s hard to be a boy, because all of the girls are witches. Bucky already watched his best friend drift away from him to hang out with the cool and powerful girls, and he’s been lonely ever since. His father is the sheriff, but when it comes to investigating magick users, his power is limited because they are protected in this town. When Bucky’s little sister is kidnapped, it sends fear through his family and through the entire town. Bucky knows that his father is limited by the town laws, but Bucky has the freedom to investigate in ways his father can’t. Bucky will do anything to save his sister, even if that means going up against the most powerful witches he’s ever known.
Give this book to teens who enjoy graphic novels that mix mystery, fantasy, and horror!

Bucky Orson is a bit gloomy, but who isn’t at fifteen? His best friend left him to hang out with way cooler friends, his dad is the town sheriff, and wait for it—he lives in Blackwell, a town where all the girls are witches. But when his little sister is kidnapped because of her extraordinary power, Bucky has to get out of his own head and go on a strange journey to investigate the small town that gives him so much grief. And in the process he uncovers the town’s painful history and a conspiracy that will change it forever. Beautiful, spooky, and utterly enchanting, Grimoire Noir is a charming graphic novel about coming to terms with your own flaws and working past them to protect those dear to you.

New Book Review: Grimoire Noir
Tumblr media
Image from publisher’s website
Grimoire Noir by Vera Greentea (writer) and Yana Bogatch (illustrator)
Release: July 23, 2019
Publisher: First Second
Grimoire Noir is Vera Greentea’s first novel that wasn’t self-published (as far as I am aware). If you know about First Second publishing, you’ll also pick up that it’s a graphic novel. Greentea tends to write novels about witches and creepy stuff - Grimoire Noir is no different. We follow the main character, Bucky, as he looks for his missing sister in a town where every woman is born with magical powers. Along the way, Bucky learns more about the town’s past and possibly morbid future - if nothing is done to stop certain events from occurring.
I’m giving this book two distinct ratings because I think it’s necessary to accurately portray my opinion. First - the story. Learning about this town through Bucky is intriguing. He’s a self-proclaimed teenage sleuth with a bit of ignorance about the world in which he grew up. It was refreshing to see him learn about magic and all the different women and powers in town. However, I felt that a lot of the knowledge he gleaned, he should’ve known by now. This is a town where every woman is a witch - this is accepted and the women are supported and everyone helps to protect the town’s magic. I think Bucky would have known a bit more about this considering his age.
Beyond this irk of mine, the story was just “cute” for me. I felt there were a lot of places where more depth and exploration could have occurred, and random pieces of information were thrown in making it feel rushed. I wanted to learn even more about this town’s inhabitants and culture. I mean, they are a secluded area with magic! How would that change the small town culture and their association with the larger world? Luckily for us, though, Greentea has started something that she could take to new heights in other volumes (pretty please?!). For this one though, I’m giving the storyline 3 out of 5 Awesome Austin Points.
For the second rating - the art. I loved the style used for this graphic novel. It’s mostly in black and white (that noir feel) but the use of color is incredibly intentional - eyes, little pieces of magic, or specific colors associated with certain characters. It is gorgeous and I definitely want to explore more of the illustrator’s work. She does a wonderful job mixing the noir genre with a modern twist. The artwork is getting 5 out of 5 Awesome Austin Points.
Despite my lack of love for the storyline, I would definitely read another volume (and I’ll reread this one) if these two team up to produce more graphic novels in this world. I enjoyed reading this, even though the story wasn’t as captivating as I hoped. The potential and the artwork sparked great joy though and I sure as heck hope we see where Bucky’s world takes him next.
