My first memory of an encounter with a plant is at age 5. I was playing with my rabbit in our backyard. I got on my hands & knees making my body small and mimickey his movements. He ate some Red Clover. I hesitated for a moment not sure if I should do the same. I picked it up to take a closer look. Noticing all it's small petals and their colors. Can I eat this to? I took a nibble. Curious, I layed my head on the ground to see what else he was eating. I remember picking it for my rabbit and bringing it to his cage on a raining day. I saved one for myself to eat with him. He loved it and it made me happy to share a snack with him. There was something about the moment with clover that stuck with me. I've heard similar stories from people's first memory of working with herbs. They were moved somehow and it kept them curious. This collective curiousity has built thousands of years of knowledge & experiences which we wrap up with a single word (in English) Herbalism. Recently someone asked me "what is Herbalism?" It was a truely inspiring moment because it reminded me that everyone has the potential for a new beginning towards the path of plant medicine. No matter how far people have gotten away from in the last 100+ years, curiousity will always bring people back to plants!
