THE DYING DETECTIVE part 2 - part 1 here - Watson, I may have committed too hard to the bit.
This is nearly all canon, yes even including “if you love me”. I did add Holmes saying “bitch” but I think it’s in character. There’s one more part which will come soon!
I'm still on self-imposed pause while I let some injuries heal up, I couldn't miss celebrating Calypso's Birthday!! She deserves the WORLD!!
Something about the pure gender joy of this absolutely lights up my soul. Gender is somehow such a controversial issue right now - when it's really just about expression and celebration of the divine self! Seeing Wee Jon have this glorious moment, and knowing the sincerity Kristian Nairn brought to this character, is just elevated to something so personal and dear to me. This wasn't a punchline, this wasn't a throwaway little inside joke from a panel, this was Calypso's birth and I'm so fucking happy she's here.
...I just preordered this book on sight even though I had no damn idea what it was about. (And now that I do know, I'm glad I did.) :)
"Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan.
"Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie.
"But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits. Jake had enemies, and now they're coming after Charlie. His uncle might have been a standup, old-fashioned kind of villain, but these are the real thing: rich, soulless predators backed by multinational corporations and venture capital.
"It's up to Charlie to win the war his uncle started against a league of supervillains. But with unionized dolphins, hyper-intelligent talking spy cats, and a terrifying henchperson at his side, going bad is starting to look pretty good.
"In a dog-eat-dog world... be a cat."
Ratigan as the middle one, even if everyone is sure that he was the absolute first to pop out...how even old is this man? This is truly a mystery. He has a love-hate relationship with the younger brother, even if, in case the aforementioned brother would be in need help, no force would be strong enough to stop Ratigan to be there for him.
We have Sykes that's supposedly the oldest. Short tempered, always comes with hands with the middle one, '...too much, too much plotting, plotting, plotting! Chitter chattering-!' But still, he has a lot of respect for his brilliant mind.
Then John-! Well. He's the youngest. The ray of sunshine. The untouchable. Even Ratigan never pulled his hairs when was little. John has to be the responsible braincell. He's the mediator between his oldest brothers.
When the three of them are together, two full hours cannot pass, without a grumbling or complaining. But at the end of the day, they all had cooked, eaten, and tidied up the kitchen; the house is- maybe overly eccentric in some corners- but clean, and the bills at the end of the month payed and archived.
There's a fascinating double standard in a lot of the analysis of John's influence on the Nine Houses' society. Like, the role of cavaliers, the widespread commodification of the remains of the dead, these are all faults the Nine Houses have inherited directly from him. Fair enough. But the lack of gendered roles, the complete lack of male primogeniture, homophobia, or patriarchal family structures, these of course have nothing to do with John, who is definitely a misogynist.
edit: what I mean is that the stuff that makes it easy to hate John and frame him as a mustache twirling villain tends to be entirely credited to him, while complications to that narrative tend to fall by the wayside. this post has nothing to do with misandry and everything to do with craving nuance
This advertisement is for Starter Villain, a new science fiction adventure from Hugo Award–winning author John Scalzi.
Meet the new boss.
JK this cat doesn’t work for Tor. At least, we’re pretty sure, with remote work it’s hard to tell who is and isn’t a cat. The person posting this could be a cat. You’d literally never know.
But we do know you should check out Starter Villain by John Scalzi, because it does have hyper intelligent cats working for a villainous organization.
WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT
When divorced substitute teacher Charlie’s long-lost uncle Jake dies, he’s not expecting much. Certainly not to inherit a supervillain business, complete with an island volcano lair, giant laser death rays, lava pits, and hyper-intelligent talking spy cats.
But it gets worse.
Because his uncle wasn’t just a supervillain. He was a supervillain who was in the middle of trying to take down the other supervillains. Somewhere along the way he decided that the rich, soulless predators back by multinational corporations and venture capital were a bad idea. And they needed to be stopped.
