See I have some characters who, when I'm writing for just myself, they are genuinely kind and vulnerable and all that good stuff, yeah they might be messy but who isn't. and then when I think about the campaign I'm just like. Now how do i justify picking out combat music for them. Because I have ideas for how combat against them would go. And this song slaps. The temptation is so strong and i am being so brave about not attacking my party etc etc

okay but the point of ophiuchus is like. terror. that's how he operates. he's got his internal little self-justifications like how fear kills magic and therefore it's all self-protection (as if he himself doesn't stand for so much) especially when he's interacting with the zodiac. the point is to maximize terror. because with terror comes no resistance

and much earlier we see leo getting himself (and everyone else by virtue of them wanting to follow him) in way way over their heads, and he says: i thought that when i was that scared the magic would activate and save me. because that's what the hero does. because it's comforting, a last resort, to think that if things get that bad something will save you. something you don't have to exert energy with either. but that's not how it works. magic is mental, a cultivated skillset like anything else, and any overwhelming emotion will kill it.

so we see our villain playing with this on a societal level and a personal level. there's a loud knocking from one end of the opuntia rose's bar, everyone quiets down. they don't know if the police are on the other side. leo has to actively think about whether he's sufficiently passing or whether the space he's going into is safe enough to even try. and then in personal interactions ophiuchus goes to almost cartoonish levels of extreme (because all bigots are parodies of themselves) in his displays of violence and threat. whether or not he even decides to follow through on that threat-- see: cutting out leo's tongue-- the fact that he could with no repercussions is what keeps him safe. the fear in the minds of his victims.

because that's how his ideal world operates too. total and complete intolerance (or, pain) to any peoples whose life does not conform to "the way life is supposed to be."

(many more thoughts including how this relates to ophi stealing magic in the first place and also how, in many ways, he's society's perfect citizen)
