Ken's friend Allan's debut via a vintage television commercial from 1964. Allan made a few appearances in the Barbie universe during subsequent decades, introduced in 1964 as "He's Ken's buddy! All of Ken's clothes fit him!" Revamped in 1965, he was touted to have "Lifelike bendable legs!" After disappearing without a trace for an extended period of time (where did you go, Allan?), he suddenly reappeared in 2008 in a "Campus Sweet Shop Midge and Allan Doll Giftset". His most recent appearance was in 2014 when he was featured in the "Double Date 50th Anniversary Giftset" alongside Barbie, Midge and Ken, all of whom were apparently stuck in 1964 with the same clothes and hairstyles. While Ken, Barbie and Midge went through numerous style makeovers over the decades, constantly changing to reflect the times, Allan's look was locked and loaded from his inception. His reddish hair plastered down, his enigmatic smile firmly in place and his features never changing, his bendable legs were his only progression beyond being able to wear Ken's clothes (which made him look tragically out of step with his mid-60s hairstyle while wearing Ken's rather flamboyant outfits from the '70s and '80s, possibly explaining why he fell off the radar for almost five decades, running as far away from Ken's closet as fast as his bendable legs would take him). Allan will next appear in the Barbie movie, in which he's being played by Michael Cera. Will his mysterious disappearance finally be explained? What secrets will be revealed? Only time will tell...
From the vintage television commercial for Cher’s first fragrance “Uninhibited”, which she launched in 1988. Created with Parfums Stern in conjunction with Avon, Cher wanted the fragrance to smell like two that she’d been successfully combining and wearing for a decade, “Charles of the Ritz” and “Vanilla by Jean Laporte”. A concoction blended with the aromas of Egyptian jasmine, heliotrope, ylang ylang, Tahitian orchid, smokey sandalwood, West Indian rum and Cher’s favorite flower Casablanca Lily, the signature bottle cap was based on an earring Cher wore in the 1987 movie The Witches of Eastwick. “It's a charismatic bottle, maybe nostalgic too,” Cher stated at the time. “You know, the old days, when you really felt life was romantic.” Sold at a price point ranging from $30 for a bottle of cologne to $300 for a bottle of perfume, the fragrance was an instant marketing success following a tour of U.S. and Canadian department stores where Cher appeared in person wearing a Bob Mackie designed gown with a matching head dress resembling the bottle cap. Shortly after the fragrance launched, Macy’s in San Francisco had to press pause on advertising “Uninhibited” as the bottles sold out faster than they could re-stock the shelves. After its initial success, the fragrance was discontinued in 1990 following marketing disagreements. Hard to find today, bottles are coveted by Cher fans and perfume collectors.
