It’s late. Scar is already asleep, and distantly, Jimmy imagines he can hear that cat Tango found for him meowing to him. Elsewhere, Fwhip is—doing nothing Jimmy cares about, thank you—and the sky is clear tonight, so he supposes Joel must be content. Grian had gone to make base with more of the strangers and strangely familiar, and Jimmy is here to hang up his hat and go to bed.

When he turns around, there’s a small yellow bird perched on his hatstand.

“Oh, you—go away,” Jimmy says, irritated.

The bird doesn’t speak, but Jimmy hears what it’s trying to say: if they’re here, that means it was real. If Jimmy knows them, and they know Jimmy, that means it was real. If it was real, that means everything else is too.

Jimmy crosses the room to stick his hat on his other pillow instead of the hatstand. With a surprisingly lovely song, the yellow bird flies off the hatstand and lands on the hat.

“Shoo,” Jimmy says. “Even if it were all real. Even if he’s here, and Tango’s as good as all those memories say, and—you don’t gotta stick around me, you know. Shoo. Besides, this all still has time to be a stupid dream.”

The bird sings sadly.

“Ugh,” Jimmy says, flopping in bed. “Even if it is all real, it’s not time yet anyway.”

The bird hops over to where Jimmy is flopped in bed and rests its head against Jimmy’s cheek. Outside, there’s a ranch he’s building for someone he met in a dream, and there are poppies in a vase downstairs, and Grian said that Jimmy couldn’t escape him, and Jimmy’s not sure that Grian knows what he meant when he said it.

The bird chirps sadly again.

“…it’s not your fault anyhow. I shouldn’t yell,” Jimmy says. “It’s hardly your fault everyone else—well.”

The bird chirps one last time before flying out the window. In Jimmy’s head, it’s gone to find Tango, or maybe Scott. Jimmy watches it.

“If I’m going to have to check the water tower for cod, I’m not taking it to Joel,” he says, as though there’s any logic to that whatsoever. “Do you know how much fun I’ll get made of for doing that? Nu-uh, no way.”

He blows out the candle. The room is dark. He goes to sleep, and he dreams of past lives. They aren’t so bad as all that, but he’d prefer they stay there, if it’s all the same anyway.

I am curious what do you think about yandere Gallagher secretly being an eldritch monster or Cognito hazard.

oh my god... i had to take a day to think about it, like it could go so many ways??

Eldritch monster is an easy alley, esp with his connection to the 'death' in Penacony, and how he's made up of aspects of other family members. And a cognito hazard is also a viable option considering how he could've blended himself in after he took aspects of people and how Penaconys memory and thought altering aspects used by the memokeepers and by sunday himself, who says it's not possible.

Your mind is hazy as you sit in the Dreamjolt Holstery, the alcohol makes your thoughts stir. It's surprisingly silent today, none of the dreamjolt troupe are here to cause a ruckus. But as always a familiar face is here to listen to your musings.

"Well, looks like you had too much to drink eh, doll?" Gallagher chuckles wiping a glass as your eyes focus onto him.

"..Maybe i have." a noncommittal hum escapes your throat, The alcohol is messing with you, his face is a blur, but most of the features you can make out, that brown hair, the stubble, the scars, but it feels wrong. Were the lights always this bright? Practically searing your eyes as you try and manage your tipsy mind, lest something foolish slips out of it.

"I should probably go now... or do you think Siobhan would let me crash here?" Laughter bubbles from him as he sets down the glass,

"Eh, maybe, but the real question is if you're gonna pay your tab tonight or tomorrow?"

"I think i'll pay tomorrow, you and i both know i'll be back here anyways." You stand, rubbing away the headache as you get to your feet, The world spins for a split second before you gets your wits about, walking out of the holstery and making your way to the connecting portal in the Reveries' lobby.

It's cold, chills creep onto your skin, the empty halls doing nothing to soothe the feeling. You feel the goosebumps on your skin, unnerving your tipsy mind as you avoid the more monster-infested areas of the hotel, hoping that the maintenance staff can finish faster just so the halls can be less empty than it is now.

To think that you'd miss the loud patrons, the smooth jazz and the clacking of shoes that would usually fill the hotel...

You're snapped to sobriety as you feel eyes dig themselves onto your skin, if the cold hadn't sobered you up earlier, this certainly did. Steeling your nerves. the walk continues, peering into halls, listening for the noise of the monsters that now litter the empty Reverie hotel, the gaze never leaves you, like a predator stalking it's prey.

You know that you haven't encountered any monsters, even with the alcohol in your system spotting them would be easy, bright colors and mechanical sounds, all tell-tale signs of their presence. A flash of purple and yellow moves in your peripheral, making you jump into a panic, ducking into the door leading to the main lobby.

There's a slight shakiness to your movements now, heart thumping in your ears as you reach the connecting pathway towards Golden hour. You take a few deep breaths, steadying your nerves before you enter the portal.

Those eyes remain gazing at your back, the faint pink light disappearing before your eyes can even register it.

brother crab's winter 2024 parting thoughts: ishura s1

tl;dr was originally meh on this for reasons that really aren't fair, ultimately wound up enjoying it well enough to pick up s2, but wouldn't necessarily recommend (especially if you'll be bothered by the fact that it's Very slow)

full review:

you know what i think for the first half of the season i really didn't give this show a fair shake. based on a skim of its summary and the fact that it had the battle royale tag, i went in thinking it would be structurally similar to shuumatsu no valkyrie (which i'd recently binged and enjoyed immensely)

and that sort of battle royale, a tournament between a roster of op heroes, does seem to be coming up. but unlike snv, ishura doesn't dump us straight into the tournament. there's a whole lot of buildup to it, in fact...

the whole first season is buildup for the tournament to choose a hero, which isn't necessarily a bad thing! just isn't what i expected, so i was a bit on the fence for a while

ultimately though i think i did enjoy this series. it's heavy on the action (and gore) but most of the fight scenes are pretty banging, and the cast is full of fairly interesting characters (many of whom are not long-lived lmao)

some of the characters are so cool, in fact, that it feels like a shame to not get more time with them. the pacing didn't feel bad or anything, but it's a very, for lack of a better word, scattered series. not in a negative way, though, because the relatively huge cast provides a wider look at the world. it's just a lot of build-up and so far not much payoff (but clearly it's the start of a longer thing, so i guess to me that's fine)

the worldbuilding to me is by far the strongest point of the series, even stronger than the action sequences. there are some elements of it that i really love, like the naming conventions ("taren the guarded" "dakai the magpie" "alus the star runner" and so on, instead of family surnames) and the word arts magic

the (fairly early) reveal that not only humans and wyverns but even these... constructs? that seemed like mechanical golems? could use this word arts magic was fantastic to me, and i hope we get to see more interesting things of that nature as we continue

ishura has had a second season announced and even though i was a bit lukewarm on it for half this season, i do think i'll continue. if only because the cast is absurdly stacked and i go where my favorite voice actors go lol

i would still say it isn't exactly exceptional as a fantasy action series, but does do some interesting things with worldbuilding that i don't think i've seen much of before (but i also haven't watched fantasy extensively yet, so don't have too much to compare)

dakai my beloved freak i miss u already umu it was such a trip hearing hoshi souichirou voice a character like dakai though lol i mean i'm sure he's done many before but i more associate him with darling momo revale (and more recently saiyuki swk) so this was. new. and a treat

Interesting: Scully being skeptical of the paranormal means that she is unwisely trusting fake-Mulder, contrary to how she typically behaves towards others, whereas Mulder believing in the paranormal means he wouldn't trust him, again contrary to his nature.

Blundt said to Mulder “I was born a loser, but you're one by choice”. I mean, accurate, but that's why we love Mulder, right? He embraces his loser-ness, as I aspire to!

If you can't tell by the seven thousand posts, I absolutely LOVED this episode!!! It's definitely one of my favourites so far, if not my actual favourite. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it (or rewatching certain parts of it!).

After Jhope announced that he cancelled his enlistment postponement, Jin called him and had phone access long enough to comment and reply to Jhope on Weverse for a while.

Next day, Jk did a live right before going off to work. Very quick, shared some TMI about his recent days (Bam is unwell and he had drinks with friends last night), stopped because the garbage disposal repairman arrived.

And deleted his ig account. Went on Weverse to explain why.

6 days later, Jk went to watch Park Hyoshin's musical with V and his Wooga hyungs.

After the outing, Jk turned on a late night karaoke live. Fell asleep and was remotely shut off by staff (first time in the history of live broadcasts).

Next day, Jimin and Jhope went to visit Jin at the base.

Jimin posted their group photo on Twitter but deleted it, then Jin uploaded the photo onto his ig.

Same day afternoon, Jk and Tae went bowling.

my other comment on the baby sharks that i did not want to put into the lb tag is that dougie jr's last gift to the sharks was clearly creating a prospie pipeline that is either short kings or big bois. absolutely no medium-sized men, just a bunch of giant fucks and then a bunch of guys listed at 5'10 who are barely pushing 5'9 if that. watching the bordeleau-eklund-cardwell topline on ice with onyebuchi and guryev was comical. jmac said i'm sending out my smallest guys to score goals (they didn't) and i'm sending out my biggest boys to protect them. and guryev and onyebuchi said yes sir coach jmac we take our job very seriously mr. coach jmac and got into like 10 fights each. future of the sharkuda looks funny as fuck.
