Prof. Fred Hoffman is a retired US Army human intelligence officer and US military attaché in Germany. He served in Germany around the same time Vladimir Putin was a lieutenant colonel in the KGB stationed in Dresden in the now defunct East Germany (”German Democratic Republic”).
Prof. Hoffman believes that Putin hates Ukraine because the Russian dictator sees it as a hotbed of democratic contagion which could spread to Russia. Putin blamed West Germany for corrupting the glorious communist East Germany with ideas about democracy, freedom, and higher standards of living.
Putin’s war is largely a clash of civilizations between modern Western democracies and kleptocratic autocracies. Putin’s invasion of Ukraine was essentially a declaration of war against the West. People who characterize the war as a “territorial dispute” are putting on public display their farcical ignorance of Russian history and Eastern Europe.
“Who can prevent all this from happening? The people. Public figures, journalists, musicians, actors, athletes, scientists, doctors, bloggers, stand-ups, Tiktokers, and more. Ordinary people. Ordinary, simple people. Men, women, old, young, fathers, and most importantly - mothers. I know that my speech will not be aired on Russian television. But the citizens of Russia have to see it. They need to know the truth.”
folks in light of the recent news I think it's good to keep in mind that the ICC does NOT have the power to, on its own, actually prosecute vladimir putin for war crimes.
yes, there was an arrest warrant, but because russia is NOT currently a state party to the rome statute (the founding treaty of the ICC) and the court does not have a police force of its own, it can't actually enforce the warrant they put out without cooperation of a state party.
that's something you can read more about in the ICC website, but i.e. unless putin actually visits one of the state parties of the ICC, himself, the warrant by itself is only a symbolic gesture. as much as we all wish to see him pay for what he's done, let's not get misled by reading only the headlines.
For all the tankies and misguided “leftists” who somehow think that backing Putin is the way to show how “pure” their “communism” is—THIS is how you do it. THIS is how you rise up. These Russian protesters aren’t talking shit, while hiding behind a keyboard, in the safety of a country that’s safely not being invaded. These Russian citizens are openly protesting Putin’s war and their own government. They are putting it all on the line and literally risking everything to protest Putin’s imperialism. They are showing solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
Since their efforts to aid others in times of crisis often goes unnoticed, let's all take a moment to thank Ireland for taking in the Ukrainian refugees that Britain is turning away. They are demanding no visas, no pre-existing family or title in their country, nothing more than a fucking ID. Those who have faced the most tragedy are truly the most heroic. 🇮🇪🍀💚🤍🧡
This would be a good time to remember that when Donald Trump was impeached for the first time, it was for withholding $400 million in military aid for Ukraine -- which was already fighting Russian aggression -- to force Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to investigate false claims about Trump’s political opponents.
That military assistance that President Trump held back from Ukraine for 84 days included “sniper rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, night vision goggles, medical aid and other equipment the Ukrainian military needed to fight a grinding war against Russian-backed separatists”.
I’m sure nobody has forgotten that, but every time I see a new story about Trump praising Vladimir Putin, as he has done THIS week, I think it’s important to recall that he also extorted Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is literally fighting for his life while leading Ukraine against Russia.
Friendly reminder that if you call Eastern Europeans ‘snowflakes’ for not laughing at your war memes, you’re not quirky, you’re just a fucking asshole.
And you don’t get to tell us to ‘take a joke’ about a war that is happening few km from our borders (for non Ukrainians balkans).
If the war is not affecting you, your families, your friends or your other close ones, stop the ‘but this is my coping mechanism 🥺’ bullshit.
