Hluboká Castle
Hluboká Castle is located in Hluboká nad Vitavou in the Czech Republic. The castle was built in the 13th century by King Premysl Otakar II as a military fortification on a steep promontory overlooking the Vltava River. In 1661, the castle became the seat of the Schwarzenberg family. The Schwarzenberg family reconstructed the castle to its Neo-Gothic appearance. There were four major construction periods, which finished in 1871. The castle has 140 lavishly decorated rooms, with eleven towers and bastions. The castle is surrounded by parkland with rose gardens, courtyards, and terraces. The interior has a sweeping staircase, private apartments, a smoking room, a library, a 19th century kitchen, a dining room, ornate wood paneling, art, and tapestries from the 16th and 18th centuries. Hluboká Castle is open to the public and is one of the most visited in the Czech Republic. Because the castle is so large, there are several tours available.
