January Endangered birds 6 (#65) - the White-rumped Vulture (CR)

Once the most abundant large bird-of-prey in the world, these south-Asian vultures saw a fall of more than 99% gone in three generations - there are less than 6,000 adult birds left. The cause is a drug used on livestock, diclofenac, which is incredibly toxic to these scavengers, along with loss of food sources.

The good news: Following a ban on diclofenac in India and awareness campaigns, the population is now stable or even increasing in some areas!

the indian vulture is a large bird of prey native to the indian subcontinent. this bird is sadly critically endangered; they experienced significant population decline after cattle in india were given diclofenac to ease joint pain; vultures feeding on cattle carcasses experienced poisoning, and in 2006 bans on diclofenac were enacted in india, pakistan, and nepal. they are an often misunderstood bird that is typically shy and peaceful in nature, feeding on the dead but not hunting for their food.
