you guys I am SO excited to introduce you to the AU that started the friendship between myself and AJ! I was watching TMFU for about the billionth time in january 2023 and as usual my brain was in Make It About Your Blorbos mode, so I wrote up a bullet point summary of how a 3zun AU for the film's narrative could work. I knew I didn't have the historical research chops to pull off what the story deserved, but then I remembered there was someone in the fandom who not only was very comfortable writing long-form fic, but also was excellent at writing fic with a really vivid sense of the time period it's set in - so I sent the AU plot outline to AJ with a message that was more or less, to use The Old Tongue, "free plot bunny to good home". if I remember rightly I think AJ actually went and watched the film that very evening and enthusiastically accepted custody of the AU - since then, they've done the writing, and I've been delightedly cheerleading and drawing art for it. I really hope you enjoy reading it as much as we've enjoyed working on it!

Oh WOW these are some gorgeous horses!!! I have to admit I was a little skeptical about Gearous's horse skills considering their Little Apple art wasn't great, but these have definitely skyrocketed to the top of my mdzs equine art faves!!!!!!!! The little cloud emblem bridle cheekpiece is so pretty too ahhh horse Wangji is so cutee 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

I'm very curious about the nosebandless bridles though 🤔🤔 as far as I know the majority of traditional Chinese artifacts regarding horse tack seem to have had nosebands, and all mdzs equine art up to this point has featured nosebands with the tack (I've talked briefly about little apple's tack being inconsistent, but in general seeming to stick to using bitless bridles), so this is a slightly strange change of pace! I wonder if it was just a composition detail or if there was any thought behind it.. guess we'll never know 😞 but regardless wonderful ship art of the girls (horses). 10/10

At long last after much delay, I figured out how I wanted to handle the butterflies and what was bothering me about the lanterns, and I have finished the latest entry in my (not abandoned) MXTX Major Arcana tarot project, Hua Cheng as Death. I've departed pretty far from the traditional iconography on this one - Death is usually mounted, but I didn't want to draw him on a horse, and there are generally skeletons, but I don't like drawing skulls. So this time, I went with Vibes. He's standing in an ocean of blood, it's fine.

Next up in this series will be Lan Wangji as the Hermit (I know I usually do a poll, but the polls so far have resulted in five of the six main characters, so I'm gonna finish the set), but I might work on something non-mxtx before I dive into that one.

You know what I would have liked to see in the different adaptions of mdzs? Some more of Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan bonding time. I really adore their cute relationship with each other and I would love to see the process of how they got so close!

Because how on earth did this:

“Give him to me.”

But the old woman just kept shaking her head, and the child clung tightly to her neck. Although they were both almost slipping off the horse, there was unconcealable terror in both of their eyes. Wei Wuxian swiftly reached out, picked up the child, and tucked him under his arm.

The old woman was horrified. “A-Yuan! A-Yuan!” she cried.

While the child named A-Yuan was still very young, he already knew that he should be scared. But he didn’t cry—he only vigorously chewed on his finger and snuck glimpses at Wei Wuxian.

Become this:

Wen Yuan didn’t understand what anyone was talking about, but children always call for their loved ones when they are frightened. And so, he sobbed and cried, “Daddy! Daddy! Waaaaaaaaah…”

I'm pretty sure he's calling Wei Wuxian his dad in this scene. He doesn't even know who Lan Wangji is.

And yeah I admit, I'm a sucker for platonic stuff like these. I was obsessed with Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne's bond and now I'm obsessed with Wei Wuxian and A-Yuan. Lucky me.

On a side note, does anyone have any fic recommendations based on these two's cute little relationship? I always see A-Yuan with Lan Wangji in fics, but rarely do I see him with Wei Wuxian.
