We've seen the Straw Hats react to Warlord!Sanji, but now that you've brought up the Shichibukai declaring war against the government for their son--how does the world react to this reveal? You said in the notes that his new bounty name would be "Child of the Warlords," but I was thinking about it, and what if it's something like "Warprince"? Sounds cliche, but technically his parents aren't warlords anymore, and I doubt the government considers him their child due to the weird obsession they have with bloodlines :/ anyway prince would also refer to the Vinsmokes so they probably thought two birds one stone. Sanji's bounty is now higher than Zoro's. Zoro is perpetually enraged by this.

Also, imagine the reactions of people like Vivi and Law who literally witnessed Sanji helping take down his own parent. Or even Judge who's sweating over the realization that his failure son holds the devotion of some of the most powerful pirates alive. Zeff sees the updated poster and has PTSD flashbacks of Sanji's birthday party when all five parents visited the Baratie. He and the other chefs spend the night drinking.

You make a good point, anon. They probably wouldn't give him the name 'Child of the Warlords' it probably would be 'Warprince' or 'Prince of War' or something similar. As for the world reacting? The shock that reverberates around probably leads to all their denden mushis and the Sunny's ringing all the fucking time.

Sanji's bounty has to be almost as high as Luffy's, given he escaped his execution and continued being a pirate after he was given the all clear to resume his normal activities. Zoro is pissed about the bounty and Sanji is like 'I don't know what to do about this' as he stress cooks in the kitchen. Luffy is probably happy about that but he knows Sanji is worried and it's worse than when he got back from Whole Cake. Chopper said what Sanji went through was extreme and it would take time but Luffy just wants him back to his happier self.

Ace probably shows up to the Sunny and talks to Sanji about it. Like his parents helped Ace and the White Beard fleet and he can relate about his parentage being open knowledge. How scary it is but Sanji has a lot of people to support him. Perona probably comes by and is just floating and holding onto Sanji while he cooks and is just pulled along while she talks his ear off about zombies and cute things. She also tells him all about Zoro getting his ass handed to him by Mihawk.

Vivi and Law call to ask why Sanji would help over them overthrow his parents. The answer is so dumb and simple because the answer is it made his parents proud. They knew when he inevitably would set off he would become a powerful pirate but that would always be second to him being a cook. Zeff calls and demands the numbers for his fucking parents and is screaming at Jinbei over the mushi because what fuck is he letting them do? The Baratie is closed for a week because everyone is too drunk and also too hungover to function because of the news about the eggplant. Zeff, Patty, and Carne have flashbacks to Sanji's seventeenth birthday party at the Baratie and also yell at Jinbei for that even though he only brought himself and booze.

Like and the other four, who already had high bounties and now they just keep climbing because of the destruction they're raining on the government? When Mihawk's passes Shanks' bounty Redhair calls him up and is like "is this worth it?" And Mihawk is like "If rouge and Roger we're here and that happened to Ace they would do the same thing" and like yeah. Mihawk has a point.

Judge stares at the paper and wonders how the fucking failure managed to A. Escape his execution, which he eyes Reiju for and B. Became the child of not one or two warlords but five warlords, four of which are currently waging a war on the government for trying to kill Sanji. Judge debates for a while whether he should try to get Sanji back again. Then he sees Mihawk and Boa's bounties are both fast approaching six billion beri and decides against it.

For now at least.

i can certainly give you some recs!

everything's hosted on ao3 and set in the one piece universe; i do read modern/mundane AUs but i'm always really picky about how an author adapts a ship's canon history into an AU, so i've yet to find one that really grabs me except that one college AU i forgot to save a link to… i hope i'll find you again someday…

for all my life i’ve watched from afar, i’m too afraid to try by Badopportunities - complete, 18k

this is probably my favorite shuggy fic i've read so far. a canon divergence in which shanks hunts down ace instead of whitebeard to warn him off the blackbeard hunt directly, and just so happens to find ace while he's hanging out with buggy's crew. love the outside POVs on shanks & buggy before their history was common knowledge, love their dynamic while trying to keep that history secret, love the optimistic way the story ends.

uncharted waters by vestigialmoods - complete, 41k

a long, multi-POV sorta kinda get-together—this one written after we knew the warlord system was being dissolved but before we learned about cross guild. buggy tries to figure out what to do now that he's lost government protection; shanks is encouraged to go for what he wants for once, instead of passively letting fate decide his path. features very fun characterization for both crews, and a really well-crafted scene that deals with phantom limb pain and sexual tension simultaneously.

in the deepest depths i lost myself, i see myself through someone else by Badopportunities - WIP, 36k

it may be gauche to rec multiple fics by the same author but Badopportunities has yet to steer me wrong! this is set during the timeskip, while buggy is searching for an island to claim as his warlord base of operations and shanks is trying to look after former whitebeard territories. they clash. uses one of my favorite lines for a childhood friends-to-lovers ship: one of them says he's single because he's having trouble finding a partner with “similar life experiences.” iykyk

currently incomplete at 4/5 chapters, last updated in 2022… but they just posted a new chapter of their other shuggy wip (which i also recommend, buggy time travels and saves ace & uta) this week, so it feels like anything's possible!

I'll See You in My Dreams by doublejoint - complete, 4k

shanks keeps dreaming of being older, on a ship with only buggy for company, wearing matching rings and sailing for who knows where. i love how efficiently and effectively this fic explores his thoughts on these dreams over the years—are they visions of the future, his secret desires, bad gas? the ending is very sweet.

We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together (and other lies Buggy tells himself) by Transformatron - complete, 11k, explicit

i am not much for smut (being ♠️🏳️‍🌈 and all), but occasionally one gets in the mood, and this fic has some intense emotions to go along with the intense, kinda kinky smut. shanks has found out about cross guild and comes to see buggy, not convinced that this is a safe, sane, and consensual situation buggy's found himself in. they fight about it, and then… 😳

there is background established buggy/crocodile/mihawk, but crocodile and mihawk aren't present for the explicit portion of the fic.

i like lipstick on my neck by kiriya - complete, 20k, explicit

if i'm recommending smut-with-feelings, i have to rec this fic. genderbent butch/femme shanks and buggy run into each other in east blue, post-roguetown and pre-canon, and spend three chapters bickering, drinking, and… you know. absolutely fantastic characterization, buggy is an awful little gremlin and shanks likes her very much despite herself.

i don't know if the fic was inspired by this art or if the art was inspired by this fic, but either way… if you read the fic you should look at the art. that butch shanks is just. absolutely inspired.

Voltron NextGen Multi-Reality AU Basics (S8 UPDATE)

Voltron NextGen Multi-Reality AU

SPOILER WARNING FOR S8

Or just Multi AU for short. As a multishipper I’ve suffered with all my ships and NextGen ideas for a long time now, until I came to the conclusion: Why make an AU for every single ship when I can make 1 BIG AU for all of them? I mean with Alternative Realities being a thing it’s basically a free-for-all!

That’s how I came up with the Multi-Reality NextGen AU, honestly I’m only calling it an „AU” as a formality…

Basically, every ship is canon. EVERY SHIP. I may personally not like a couple of ships but that doesn’t mean I don’t want others to have fun. So yeah, fight me.

And of course with this being an inter-reality AU the crossovers are endless… honestly come to think of it, this whole AU is pure self-indulgence, nothing else.

I just enjoy designing NextGen children for my ships with some very little story ideas here and there and some crossovers. That’s all this is.

But since I’m putting this out there in the void I might as well write up some basics to make it easy.

Also this is probably obvious, this being a NextGen, but there’s a general warning for MPreg for the whole thing.

As for all Realities:

- I headcanon Galras to have both set of reproductive organs, so all females and males can impregnante and become pregnant all the same, though the dominance of each organ can change in cycles.

- Also miss me with that „Allura is a teenager” bullshit, I headcanon her to be around 23 years in human terms in S1.

- I also headcanon Pidge to be a Trans Girl.

- Also you can pry Half-Korean Keith from my cold dead hands.

- Also also I headcanon Keith and Axca to be siblings, so unless I state otherwise just assume they’re are siblings.

- Depending on Reality Adam is alive. Also miss me with Adam dying in the Canon Reality too, my guy just lost a leg and was saved by the resistence and was chilling in the desert the whole time, okay?

- Krolivan is totally a thing in all my realities.

Most of the AU focuses on a couple of ships of my liking and their children, those being:

Klance Reality:

Everything happens mostly according to canon, up until about S6. The key differences being:

- Thace is Keith’s Uncle, being Krolia’s brother, he also survives in this AU.

- The Castle doesn’t get destroyed.

- The 3 years gap still happen.

- On their way home they find a Shiro clone who managed to stay alive but never found his way back to Voltron, Shiro has a twin now (they decide to call him Ryou because I’m creative like that).

- Shiro gets an Altean like arm.

- Adam doesn’t die.

- They go back to Earth and save it from Sendak, but Earth doesn’t become the center of the Voltron Coalition.

- Allura doesn’t die.

- Allurance happens at first but later they realise it’s not working, so they split sometime after S8.

- Adashi, Thoran and Hunay happen.

- No Altean Lance at all.

- No Curto either.

- Altea and Daibazaal aren’t reborn.

- The Lions don’t leave.

More stuff to know about the Klance Reality:

- They eventually switch back the Lions with Allura going back to pilot the Castle and Ryou going to pilot Blue.

- Allura will eventually become Queen Allura, and they’ll reform the Coalition with a more Altean center.

- The Empire will be completley wiped out and they’ll work on clearing the universe from rogue warlords and pirate captains. Also re-habiliting and re-integrating galras into the universe.

- Keith will have a more Galra like appearance after their third kid, because he got infected with a bio-chemical weapon virus and part of the procedure to save him was to amplify his Galra genes.

Keith and Lance will have 8 children:

- Rosalie „Rosa” and Thace „Ace” McClain-Kogane:

30 years old, the oldest of the children, twins, with Rosa being older out of the two of them. Rosa is named after Lance’s Mom, Ace is named after Thace, Keith’s Uncle. Rosa is a Field Commander and later she’ll become the Red Paladin. Ace is the Royal Commander and later the Black Paladin.

- Amelia „Amy” McClain-Kogane:

26 years old, smaller and sickly due to Keith’s sickness during the pregnancy. The future pilot/Captain of the Castle, she will pilot it with a pair of Altean gauntlets Allura made for her.

(She’s named after Amelia Earhart because I’m a history nerd.)

- Violet and Liliac McClain-Kogane:

21 years old, twins, with Violet being older. Both of them just freshly graduated, Violet is a diplomat, Liliac is a mechanic. Violet is the future Blue Paladin, Lilian is the future Green Paladin.

- Akira McClain-Kogane:

18 years old, going to graduate soon, possible future Black Paladin. He prefers to work with the Rebels, can’t quite find his place yet.

- Clarisse „Claire” McClaine-Kogane:

16 years old, the problem child of the family, possible future Red Paladin, nopes out to join the Blade of Marmora in secret.

- Charles „Chuck” McClaine-Kogane:

12 years old, youngest and last of the children, future Yellow Paladin, upcomming tech genius.

This reality follows canon the most closely, but there’s almost a slight „underage” warning, „underage” being Keith is 17 at the start.

- Shiro and Keith kind of „got together” just before the Kerberos mission, a good while after Shiro and Adam broke up, it wasn’t exactly official, they were supposed to figure it out after Shiro came back.

- They had a one-night-stand before the Kerberos mission, Keith got pregnant, and since he wasn’t aware he’s half-galra, he was thought to be some kind of intersex.

- Adam helped Keith, and helped him keep it a secret, and even helped him after he got expelled.

- Adam was taking care of the kid when Shiro came back and they found the Blue Lion and kept taking care of her after their disappearance for 3 years until his „death.”

- Curtis takes care of Hoshi after Adam’s death mostly. (haha)

- Since Shiro didn’t bring up their Pre-Kerberos „relationship” neither did Keith, only until they were on their way back to Earth, that’s when he told him about the kid too.

- Earth’s becomes the Center of the Coalition.

- After the Universe is safe, Shiro and Keith „settle down” in the desert, Shiro keeps working as Admiral of the Garrison and Captain of the Atlas, Keith as Leader of Voltron keeping the universe safe.

- Shiro had a twin brother called Ryou in this Reality but he also had Shiro’s disease and he already died from it.

- Allura doesn’t die.

- Altea and Daibazaal aren’t reborn.

- Punk and Allurance happen.

- Curto doesn’t happen.

- The Lions don’t leave.

- No Altean Lance at all.

Shiro and Keith will have 3 children:

- Hoshi Shirogane:

26 years old, mechanic and teacher at the Garrison, future Black Paladin.

- The 3 years gap still happen.

- They go back to Earth and save it from Sendak, but there’s no Atlas and Earth doesn’t become the center of the Voltron Coalition.

- They occasionally go back to Earth.

- They eventually switch back the Lions with Allura going back to pilot the Castle, Shiro going back to Black, Keith to Red and Lance to Blue.

- Allura doesn’t die.

- Altea and Daibazaal are still reborn.

- Allura will eventually become Queen Allura, (and King Shiro?) and they’ll reform the Coalition with New Altea at the center.

- Keith becomes the new Galra Emperor of Daibazaal.

Honestly this is just the Altean Empire Reality. Like I legit planned this to happen in the canon Altean Empire Reality but it can just as well be a variation of it. Everything is exactly the same except Sven and Slav having a daughter.

Sven and Slav will have 1 kid:

- Yume, 15 years old, member of the Guns of Gamara, her existence is considered an anomaly in all realities, this gives her a good amount of existential anxiety.

Loturra Reality:

This also mostly follows canon, just with Lotor Redemption.

- Lotor doesn’t kill Narti.

- Lotor also unlocks the secrets of Oriand.

- (Lotor doesn’t lie to the alteans on the Colony, they can volunteer for the Quintessence extraction „experiment”.) I don’t know what to do with this part yet, bear with me.

- Lotor DOES go kind of mad from the Quintessence exposure when they go in to the Quintessence Field with Allura.

- Lotor and his Generals form Sincline and fight Voltron, but Voltron saves them in the end and Allura cures Lotor.

- Sincline will fight beside Voltron.

- Lotor doesn’t die.

- The 3 years gap still happen.

- They still go back to Earth and save it from Sendak together.

- Shiro still becomes Captain of the Atlas.

- Allura doesn’t die (duh).

- Altea and Daibazaal aren’t reborn.

They’ll eventually unify the Galra Empire again this time on the right path and start to build New Altea with the Colony Alteans. Galrans and Altean unite on a new home.

- Empress Allura and Emperor Lotor.

- After Kolivan and Krolia retire, Keith becomes the new Leader of the Blade of Marmora together with Axca.

- Allura becomes the Black Paladin.

- I don’t know who’ll be the Blue Paladin yet.

Lotor and Allura will have 2 children:

- After Voltron defeats Sendak, Zarkon denounce him a disgrace and „exiles” him from the Empire.

- They eventually meet him again and he eventually joins them.

- At first Sendak works with the Rebels later he joins the Blade of Marmora.

- Allura doesn’t die.

- Allurance happens.

- Altean Lance happens.

- Altea and Daibazaal are still reborn.

- The Lions don’t leave.

Shiro and Sendak will have 2 children:

- Arashi and Urax

25 years old, twins, with Urax being older. Both of them are pretty problematic, but strong warriors.

Uliro Reality:

This Reality is pretty much the same as canon, just with Ulaz surviving. That’s pretty much all that changes really.

- Ulaz survives the fight with the robobeast, he gets trapped in the pocket-dimension and they later free him with the help of Slav in the 3 years gap.

- Ulaz will be amongst the surviving members of the Blade.

- He meets with Shiro again no Earth after they defeat Sendak.

- Probably Galtean Klance will happen at some point? I don’t have that many details on this reality yet.

Ulaz and Shiro will have 1 son.

Some other ships that don’t have their own reality but happen in already mentioned realities:

- Thoran happens in the Klance Reality.

- Hunay also happens in the Klance Reality, also the Shallura Reality:

Hunk and Shay will have 1 daughter, 14 years old, Koru.

- Punk happens in the Sheith Reality.

- Allurance also happens in the Sheith Reality and the Shendak Reality

Allura and Lance will have 2 children, a girl 19 years old, and a boy 14 years old. They boy will have alchemy abilities. They don’t have names yet sorry.

- Laxum happens in the Shallura Reality.

Lance and Plaxum will have 2 children, 23 years old, twins a boy and a girl, they’ll both be amphibious, able to change between mermaid and human form.

- Kaxca happens in the Loturra Reality.

Axca and Keith are not related at all, and they’ll have 2 kids, a girl 19 years old, member of the Blade of Marmora, and Yorak, 14 years old boy.

- Thalaz happens in the Shallura Reality.

- Shlav also happens in the Loturra Reality, they’ll have 1 daughter, 13 years old, (Yami) Yumi, she was genetically made by the Galra from Shiro and Slav’s DNA, to see what happens if they mix their strongest and smartest captive: the answer is anxiety and bad impulse control.

Yeah, all the „Castle doesn’t get Destroyed” will be just solved by Allura pulling some Mary Sue magic thing, she does that often enough in canon.

And the „Allura doesn’t die” is basically that, most of these will be wiped out for some time when Honerva destroys all realities except 1, so when canon Allura sacrifices herself to save all realities these AU realites just get restored and they just normally fight and defeat Honerva. (Tho this depends on reality since in some of them the story takes a whole different turn from her to begin with.)

I’ll also add to this file as I go along and figure things out, but I think this is it for now!

So this was how it ended for Ace. Sacrificing himself for his dumb ass brother. And he hadn’t even had a good breakfast. “I hate you.” Ace revolved slowly, suspended by his right ankle, a good three feet between his hanging fingertips and the ground. Judging by his nausea and a lack of response from his fire, a seastone rope. “So much.” Luffy was gawking, sitting in a heap where he’d landed after Ace had shoved him out of the way of the trap. He’d managed to flick on the flashlight on his phone, at least. Ace’s handheld torch had gone out like a lightbulb blowing once he’d made contact with the seastone. “Well this certainly puts a hamper on our plan.” Luffy shoved one finger up his nose, his default thinking face. “Damper.” Ace corrected as blood started to rush to his head. He felt like he was incredibly congested. “This puts a damper on our plan. You absolute walnut.”

Luffy looked hopeful at the idea of walnuts, then put out when he realized Ace was insulting him, not talking about food. “Can’t you just wshhhhh?” he asked, waving his hands about in a juggling motion. “No, you cheesecake, it’s seastone!” Ace flailed at him, trying to thump him a good one, but Luffy just stretched his head out of the way, sticking it up and around to peer at the rope around Ace’s ankle. “Looks like it.” Luffy let his head spring back to his body, letting it wobble wildly like a bobble-head. “I guess you’re gonna die here!” He laughed. “You’re the worst brother.” Ace groaned. “Go get Franky or Nami or someone. Anyone. Zoro or Sanji. Hell, Zoro and Sanji, I’d even deal with the two of them together to get out of this!” “Okay!” Luffy bounced up cheerily, like it wasn’t his fault Ace was caught in a humiliating rope trap sneaking into a Navy base. He hadn’t even wanted to go. “And hurry up!” Ace hissed at his retreating back. Luffy kicked it up into a jog. The light from his flashlight disappeared slowly, off into the distance, vanishing abruptly as Luffy took a turn. He swore a bit. And then a bit more. And then broke into a full on rant composed completely of swearwords. He was having the worst fucking day and this just put the goddamn icing on the shit cake, didn’t it? Ace fumed, still revolving slowly. He hated going to visit their Grandfather, and this was why. It involved bizarre booby traps and dusty old tunnels that nobody ever used anymore. But if nobody ever used these, whose light was that coming from the opposite end of the tunnel? Ace flailed, trying to stay facing the light, but he continued the slow spin, and only succeeded in exhausting himself and almost throwing up. His head throbbed with all the blood pooled there. Ace was fucked. He managed to lift one noodle-weak arm to grab at the knife on his belt, and let gravity yank his arm back down to the ground, pulling the knife from its sheath. He was as ready as he could be. To his surprise, he recognized the man (fishman, more accurately) approaching him. “Jinbe?” He squinted. He couldn’t trust his eyes with this much blood in his head. “Ace, my friend.” Jinbe paused in the middle of the tunnel. Probably not sure how to handle seeing the Boss of the Spades gang dangling upside down by a rope under the Navy headquarters. “You… Seem well.” Jinbe offered, diplomatically. Ace let his head dangle, laughing. “Sure am, Jin.” He grinned. “Cut me down?” “Seastone?” Jinbe accepted his knife, reaching up and lifting Ace to sit on his shoulder. Ace fisted his hands in Jinbe’s sweatshirt, not wanting to fall. “Yep.” Now that leg was just being pulled up at a slight angle, Jinbe sawed at it for a moment before dropping the hank of rope that had previously been wrapped around Ace’s ankle. Ace sighed in relief as power surged through his body once more. He could feel the fatigue draining slowly from his body, but still felt shaky. Ace took his knife back and sheathed it with wobbly fingers. “Thanks man.” He grinned at Jinbe who smiled back. “Anytime for a friend.” Jinbe continued his slow plod. Though his pace was slow, his legs were long, and he ate up the distance quite swiftly. “What brings you to be caught here?” Jinbe asked eventually. Ace couldn’t decide whether to roll his eyes or laugh. “My dumb kid brother. He’s like an unstoppable force, but he can be as dumb as a box of muffins sometimes.” “I have yet to meet Luffy. Your stories of him are always quite entertaining.” They reached a staircase and Jinbe plodded upwards. “Entertaining is a good word for Luffy.” Ace grinned. “He’s like a bouncy ball in an antique store. He actually did that once.” Ace laughed. “I didn’t know you could get a lifetime 86 from an antique store until then.” Jinbe chuckled and they emerged into a hallway in the Navy HQ. Their problem as gang members was getting in. Once they were in, everyone there assumed the guards at the gates had done their jobs and that they were civilians who were cleared to be there. Jinbe was particularly notorious, leading the Sun Tiger Gang. It wasn’t publicized that Jinbe was secretly a warlord, making him a gang leader supported by the government. It gave him unique connections and power that gave him a deadly edge. Ace wasn’t terribly well known; he kept his head down around cameras and always wore a hat. He preferred anonymity on the streets, keeping his strength a secret. The most that the press had managed to get was a shot of the small straw hat tattoo on his shoulderblade, so he was generally assumed (wrongly) to be a member of the Straw Hat Gang. It amused him, so he never bothered to correct the rumor. Jinbe made his way through the Navy base like he knew where he was going. Which he probably did. He eventually made his way to an office with a rather harried looking secretary outside, who was arguing with someone on the other end of the phone. His pink hair was frazzled and he waved to Jinbe apologetically, smiling at Ace briefly. Jinbe nodded and stood to the side, examining a painting of a bowl of fruit. Ace waved back. “I’m sorry Captain Smoker, please just send him down to Garp’s office. Yes, I know he’s a terrible nuisance. No, I really can’t come and get him at the moment, I’m very sorry. Yes. Yes. Lots of meetings. I’m sorry sir. Yes. No. Thank you.” Coby hung up and smiled at Jinbe. “Good Afternoon Warlord Jinbe. Admiral Garp should just be finishing up his current meeting.” “Thank you Coby.” Jinbe nodded, examining the bowl of fruit quite seriously. “I’ll have your regular tea order sent in, unless you’d prefer something else.” Coby was already dialing numbers. “The regular will be fine, thank you.” Jinbe nodded serenely. Ace propped an arm up on Jinbe’s head. “You come here enough to have a regular?” He asked curiously. “Depending on the amount of activity, the navy likes me to report in more regularly. With the recent rash of street drugs, I’ve been here quite often lately.” Ace wrinkled his nose at the thought. “Yeah, they’ve been bad. I think I’m almost to a break to it. I’ll keep you updated, man.” He heard the door open behind him, and his Grandfather’s booming laughter. “I would very much appreciate that.” Jinbe patted his knee companionably. “What are you doing here, you shithead?” Garp glared. Ace glared right back over his shoulder. “You invited us, you dumb fuck.” “What did you call me you little shit?” Garp bellowed. Coby managed to divert Garp’s attention rather skillfully with a new cup of coffee from the pot behind his desk. “Jinbe is here for your two o’clock sir.” “Right, right.” Garp nodded before pointing at Ace. “You and my brat of a grandson aren’t supposed to be here ‘til Friday, lackwit.” Ace flailed. “How was I supposed to know?? You always send all the information to Luffy! I just listened to him!” Garp bellowed out a laugh. “Is that why I can hear ol’ Smokey blowing his stack upstairs?” Ace laughed along with him. “Probably. I’m surprised this whole place isn’t smoking!” “So I’ll see you Friday then?” Garp asked. “Probably, yeah. You’re doing lunch, right?” Garp nodded. “Then of course I am!” Ace grinned at him. Garp nodded again. “Smart man. Now, Jinbe, get in here! And you, you damn pest, get out of here!” He waved Jinbe in as he shoved someone out of his office. They stumbled slightly before straightening, facing Coby. Ace slipped nimbly down from Jinbe’s shoulder. “Later gramps! Later man!” He waved goodbye to each of them before realizing who exactly stood in front of Coby’s desk. “So, Sabo, it looks like he’d like monthly meetings with you. Did you speak about that?” Coby asked. Sabo hadn’t noticed him yet. “Monthly is fine, though we may schedule more frequently as needed.” The blond man who’d left Ace sitting in the dust after a formidable show of haki. Ace had forgotten then that powerful wielders of haki could render fruit powers inert since he’d never actually faced someone able to do it. Ace had a score to settle with this little asshole. He was dressed much differently than he had been the other day. He was wearing a tidy pair of skinny jeans, as opposed to a pair that was ripped and splattered to all hell with paint and who knew what, dark navy instead of bright blue. He was also wearing a crisp blazer and a collared button down with tiny cats on it. His snapback of the encounter before was nowhere to be seen, but there was no mistaking that curly hair and those long, slender legs. And his obnoxious drawl as he scheduled his next meeting with Garp. “Do you need any help getting out? I know the building can be confusing.” Coby smiled sweetly at Sabo. Jesus. No wonder Luffy’d had the worst crush on him for a while. Ace took the opportunity to sling an arm around Sabo’s neck, shooting Coby a guileless grin. “I got this, Cobe! Me and Sabo are old friends! I’ll show him out!” His arm was tight around Sabo’s shoulders, on the verge of a headlock. Ace smirked smugly when he saw that he was a whole half inch taller than the blond. “Okay!” Coby smiled. “See you later Ace!” He answered another phone call before Sabo could protest, and Ace dragged him out of the room. Sabo flailed, but this time, Ace had the upper hand, and continued striding forward, not giving Sabo a chance to catch his balance. “So, Sabo, huh? What’s up with you and Garp? And the whole rudeness with picking a fight with me and then leaving? That was a real nice piece of work.” Ace’s smile was sickly sweet. Sabo tried to dig his heels into the ground, but in a contest of strength, Ace was stronger. “Come on now, I thought you and I were getting to be friends!” Ace’s smile widened. “Leggo!” Sabo tried to bite at him, but the leather of Ace’s motorcycle jacket protected him. “Alright.” Ace shoved Sabo into one of the closets that led to one of the many secret passages into the Navy headquarters. “You realize this isn’t some adolescent game of seven minutes in heaven, right?” Sabo looked incredibly unimpressed with being shoved into a broom closet. Ace laughed. “So you’re saying being with me in a closet is your idea of seven minutes in heaven?” He grabbed one of the cans of paint on the shelf and gave it a twist. Sabo spluttered, flushing bright red. The poor dear with his pale complexion. “Fuck you!” Ace’s laughter increased in volume as a shelf shifted to reveal a hidden staircase. “Sure! About six minutes and forty-five seconds left though!” Sabo punched him. He deserved it. It hurt. He continued to snicker as he traipsed down the staircase. “Coming, dear?” He called back. Behind him, Sabo tried the door, only to find it locked. He growled after Ace. “What the fuck did you do, asshole?” Ace smirked. “The door won’t unlock until the passage is clear. It’s about a twenty minute walk, but I dunno, I could probably stretch that into a couple of hours if I’m not supervised.” Ace conjured a ball of flame into his palm, illuminating the tunnel. Sabo stomped after him, making it very clear he wanted nothing to do with him or this situation. Ace slung his arm around his neck again. “So, Sabo! What were you doing with my gramps?” Because damned if he wasn’t going to leave with every scrap of information he could get. “None of your business.” Sabo tried to shove him off, but there was the whole issue with Ace being stronger than him again. “I’d say it is my business, seeing as he’s my grandfather and all, and I could ruin your negotiations with him if I wanted to.” Ace bluffed. There was no way Garp would drop sensitive government business just because Ace wanted him to. Hell, he led one of the gangs that Garp was committed to capturing and bringing to justice. But Sabo didn’t know that. Sabo looked like he’d been forced to eat a lemon. “I am not going to disclose sensitive information to a ruffian.” He sniped. “Would a ruffian have a direct line to a navy admiral?” Ace asked, doing his best to look innocent. Ace could practically hear Sabo grinding his teeth. It was sweet fuckin’ music to his ears. “I represent parties interested in collaborating with the world government to ensure world peace.” Sabo finally spat out. “Huh.” Ace let his arm relax around Sabo’s shoulders where it had been not-quite-threateningly tight around his neck. “Sounds a lot like…” he trailed off into thought without really meaning to. He had more than an inkling of what Sabo was talking about. More like an inkwell. If he was talking about the Revolutionaries, that was wild. If he was in a high enough position to speak to the government on their behalf, that was even wilder. Sabo tried to shove his arm off again, this time, Ace let him. Sabo peeled his blazer off and set about rolling his sleeves up by Ace’s firelight. He finally produced his snapback from where it had been… tucked down the back of his pants? Ace snorted his amusement, which Sabo loftily ignored. Sabo popped it on his head, bill facing forward, smoothing his hands over the ends of his hair. Ace felt a little sloppy next to him. His jeans were baggy, ripped out at the knees. His white tank top for Shakky’s Rip-Off Bar was at least one size too big, and his elbow brace probably still had ketchup on it from breakfast where it had landed in Luffy’s hash browns during a tussle. His unkempt hair was half-up in a small ponytail that was probably ready to fall out of his hair altogether. Next to Sabo, he felt like a hot mess. Next to Ace, Sabo tripped over a stray brick sticking out of the path and swore profusely when he almost fell on his face. That made Ace feel a little bit better. He grinned and offered a hand up. Sabo ignored his hand and picked himself up, dusting off his pants and palms. That kind of negated any good feelings Ace had and he scowled. They continued to walk in silence, both tacitly agreeing that since neither could learn anything about the other, they would ignore each other. They reached the end of the tunnel after about fifteen minutes of brisk walking: Sabo annoyed and Ace sulking. Ace knelt by the keypad and punched in a long series of numbers. He pulled the door open and gave Sabo a cheeky wave before yanking it shut behind him. “Fucker!” He heard Sabo yell from behind the door. He could hear him pounding against the door. “Let me out!” Ace childishly sat against the door, listening to Sabo pound on the door for a while, yelling obscenities. It felt kind of good, to be a dick to someone who was a dick. He could feel someone scolding him in the back of his head for being so mean, probably Makino, but pushed it aside, basking in the feeling of karmic retribution. It didn’t last for long. Sabo’s pounding got quieter after about a minute. A moment of silence. Then a soft “Shit.” from behind the door and a soft thump that he felt more than heard. Suddenly, Ace felt like an asshole. Just because he’d had kind of a bad day didn’t mean he had to be a dick to someone else, even if they deserved it after knocking him on his ass the last time they met. His stomach twisted uncomfortably and he jumped up. He typed in another long code into the matching keypad on the outside of the door and yanked the door open. Sabo went sprawling, flat on his back. He’d obviously been sitting against the door, much like Ace had been. He stared up at Ace, slightly stunned. Ace smiled down at him, extending a hand to help him up. This time, Sabo took it, letting Ace haul him to his feet. “My names Ace.” He offered. “Sorry I was a jerk. Want to get burritos?” He realized awkwardly that he hadn’t let go of Sabo’s hand yet. Sabo smiled and didn’t let go either.
