the "tumblr community invents a whole mafia movie apparently directed by martin scorsese with an official soundtrack, movie posters, screen caps, and all enough to make one question if that movie really did exist at all like a mandela effect" was not part of my 2022 bingo card

Peter Gould on the inspiration for Nacho Varga. From a 2021 interview:
Interviewer: Vince says you're the biggest mafia movie fan on earth. Do you agree with that?
Peter: I think he may be correct.
Interviewer: Did that influence the show in any way?
Peter: Well, yeah. Most of it was unconscious, but I did take a lot of inspiration from Scorsese's Goncharov when developing certain characters. Have you seen that movie?
Interviewer: We all have. Which characters?
Peter: Nacho. He's basically Goncharov—this cunning, lone wolf type who got into the game when he was way too young to know if it was the right path for him. It frustrated me how little we got to see that more vulnerable part of him, so I created Nacho as a way to make things right for myself. Goncharov mentions his own father once or twice in the film, and the way he talks about him is really, really tender, hence my decision to make Manuel a central part of Nacho's world. Also, his dynamic with Lalo is partly based on Goncharov's cat-and-mouse dynamic with Andrey.
Interviewer: Does Michael Mando know about this?
Peter: Totally. I made him watch the film with me. He went the extra mile and memorized some lines from Goncharov to perform them as both Nacho and Goncharov. It almost brought a tear to my eye.

You know what I'm not looking forward to? The inevitable Goncharov remake. I just know they're gonna botch both the script AND the casting.
Too late, anon, it's already rumored to be in the works. I'm not totally sold with the rumors of Timothee or Florence, haven't ever been huge fans of either of them, but I do admit that they're solid performers. I DO think that Oscar Isaac probably will make it worth it.
Before anyone gets into it about age, they AREN'T shaving a decade off the characters, you just think everyone is older because you're remembering De Niro, Pacino, etc etc as they are now instead of then. Timothee and Florence are about the same age as the original cast were, so nobody start with that.
Anyway, like, we all DID think that the Dune adaptation was going to be a disaster, as it always is, but it's actually pretty solid with that cast. Haven't seen any rumors about a director or a screenwriter yet, but fingers crossed it's someone who can keep up with that cast.

yes i already know what it is but i would like to hear more of Seaside For Your Health please <3
for those of you who are not jon my good friend jon (with whom this fic was brainstormed in the most literal sense) this is my SECOND fic for the wolf and the watchman. which as I said earlier I said I would write No fics about.
...and also this is in fact the fic where cardell and winge go on an ENTIRELY TONALLY UNSUITABLE ITALIAN VACATION!
look I think I'm allowed to spend thousands of words on winge not actively dying of consumption and cardell going someplace warm where the water doesn't remind him of death and both of them having a nice day for once in their cold sad lives.
“Good morning, Jean Michael.” His words are dry as ever, but today, sound less as if they originate in a throat entirely crusted over with rust. “Hardly morning anymore,” Cardell replies, with a tip of his head to the window. Winge pulls himself upright, his newly folded legs allowing Cardell enough room to properly make himself comfortable on the bed. “You ought not to permit me to sleep so long,” says Winge, but Cardell only scoffs and shrugs his shoulders. In that moment, what he wants more than anything is to push Winge back down and keep him still, to cast him solid in sunlight like an insect in amber until he’s satisfied with their rest. But Winge is already hauling himself to his feet, bracing himself against the headboard with both hands until he is confident that his legs will hold his weight. It’s rare now that Cardell needs to draw him out of bed and set him on his feet himself, for with his recovering health Winge has regained that strange energy and passion that had burned in him as he investigated. It is with that sort of methodical yet quick movement that Winge prepares himself for the day, donning his sole suit of fading crow’s-feather black as Cardell waits and watches. Cardell leans back, bracing his head against the wall, and makes himself comfortable while Winge dresses. There is enough idle talk to fill the room to his contentment — of the city, of their neighbors, of the Roman ruins in the foothills — anything at all that he thinks might pique Winge’s interest. Winge nods along as he buttons his waistcoat nearly to his chin, occasionally interjecting with a quiet hm! and a look back at Cardell. That is conversation enough for Cardell; he is perfectly satisfied to watch Winge ready himself for the day and trust that he will live to see that same day through.

Goncharov is so good because technically there is found family, but all that happened before this (they grew up as street urchins), so now you're left with a group of "old friends" who are like "yeah I found my chosen family (and then we joined a crime family). We're close but you know what? Fuck them." And then everything falls apart in the most tragic way possible. Like don't forsake the magic of friendship besties or it will forsake you.

If I were to venture a guess (and I’m about to), the attempts to standardize and catalogue Goncharov will kill it. Doing that begins to close it off. Trying to say this or that idea is accepted “canon” makes it feel less like a space you can play in and make stuff up. Maybe I’m wrong on that, but it certainly sours me on the thing to see people iterating the same ideas and not spinning so many new scenes and things that just obviously couldn’t all fit into a single film.
And like it may not die as a meme and the big stuff will still get out to a wider audience, but it’s less inviting for new people to come in because rather than just looking at a poster and thinking “what would I want to see in a 1970 gangster flick?” and making something up that fits that, there’s this feeling, this obligation, that you’ve gotta work with the “canon.”
So this is your call to buck the observation that we’ve collectively made a movie that reduced its homoeroticism to subtext. The meme’s like 5 days old. My favorite scene was the car sex scene that woulda fit in the Titanic except it’s Pacino and De Niro steaming up the windows and Scorsese shows Al jerking of Rob until he cums on their fancy suits.

I'm glad you're all watching Goncharov (1973) now, bc it's a classic, but do keep in mind the problematic issues going on behind the scenes - especially the treatment of the two main actresses. Like, good for y'all, but don't ignore it, please.
