Don’t Stop My Heart
Tyler Owens x Reader
Tumblr media
Prompt: You and Tyler take a road trip up to Iowa to catch some of the last tornadoes of the season, but he takes the teasing a little too far.
Warnings: Fluff, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, mentions of car crashes, swerving, shitty ex boyfriends. No use of Y/N.
A/N: Hello! I didn’t proofread this one as many times as I usually do. I’m coming off a 4 and a half month writers block so I really just wanted to write and post while I was excited to do it. My job has been draining me as of late, so I’m trying to write when I get the impulse. I have so many Tyler ideas and no time to write them. Crossposted on my AO3 adriansglasses.
It was still fairly early, the sun was still rising. Last night you’d planned an impromptu trip up north to Iowa. It was about a 7 hour trip from Oklahoma, so you were on the road before 6. You were hoping to get there around noon. You didn’t love getting up that early, but Tyler promised he’d drive you and you could sleep in the truck. Tornado season was pretty much over aside from an isolated storm or two, but Iowa had been having very unusual storm activity all week. Tyler couldn’t resist hitting a couple more tornadoes in late August when the season was supposed to be pretty much over with.
You stayed awake for a little bit. You wanted to watch as you crossed into Missouri.
“Missouri welcomes you.” Tyler reads out loud.
“Yes! Finally!” You giggle.
“I didn’t realize you were such a big fan of Missouri.” Tyler comments.
“Oh, I’m not.” You pause, looking out your window.
“First you’re hypin’ her up, now you’re gonna disappoint her.” He jokes.
“I’m sorry, I’m sure Missouri’s fine, but I’m more excited about that.” You point to a Hardee’s down the street.
“Really? We’re crossin’ state lines and you’re gonna make me take you to Hardee’s? You can get Carl’s Jr. anytime you want back home. That’s basically the same thing.” He argues.
“Take that back! You’re just saying that because you’re a Texas boy! You’ve never had the luxury of Hardee’s.” You joke.
“If Carl’s Jr. is better, I’m not letting you pick where we eat for the rest of the trip.” Tyler puts on his turn signal and sighs.
“How is that fair? I’ve never eaten at this location. What if it sucks?” You laugh.
“You picked your Hardee’s hill and now you’re gonna die on it. Now keep your trap closed and tell me what’s good on the menu.” Tyler makes a pretend threatening face towards you as he pulls into the drive thru.
“How am I supposed to not talk and at the same time tell you what’s good?” You tease back.
“Hi welcome to Hardee’s, may I take your order?” The drive thru speaker cuts you off. Tyler shushes you and you giggle.
After getting your food you start unwrapping the straws and putting them in both drinks.
“Whatever score we give this we need to give it extra points to account for how good the curly fries would be if they were serving lunch.” You try to bargain, taking a bite.
“No, you can’t just change the rules after we already got our food, that’s cheating. Just because you’re from the north, doesn’t mean you can cheat me.” He argues. He continues driving, leaving behind the paved roads of the small town.
“You’re acting like I’m Canadian!” You giggle.
“Well, Upper Midwest is basically Canada. There’s literally a town in Iowa called Toronto!” He smirks, taking the last bite of his food, continuing to drive through the middle of nowhere Missouri, back onto the gravel roads through the soybean fields.
“Shut up!” You playfully hit his arm. He jokingly swerves and your stomach flips. You gasp air. “Tyler, knock it off.”
“You’re the one who hit me.” He pleas innocent.
“I didn’t hit you that hard.” You defend.
“I thought you were gonna sleep on the drive.” He says, smirking.
“I might later, I’m not tired.” You answer, falling for his bit. He does a big fake yawn.
“Well if you’re not tired, I might take a little nap.” He lightly swerves again.
“Tyler, this isn’t funny!” You plead.
“What? Oh. Do you mind watching the road? We woke up so early and I’m pretty tired.” He jokes before swerving again. He’s taking the joke way too far. Once was one thing, twice was too much. You start hyperventilating.
“Tyler, STOP!” You yell, tears starting to come to your eyes.
“Woah woah woah, sweetheart, it’s okay. I’m sorry. I’ll stop.” He has a concerned look on his face. He knew he had taken it too far.
“It’s not funny.” You cry.
“You’re right, it’s not funny. I would never-a done it if I’d known it would make you feel unsafe. I do it all the time on chases and that don’t seem to bother you. I didn’t realize-“
“That’s different! The roads and the fields when there’s no storms are different! We’re on an actual road! What- what if there were other people?! What if you hit somebody?! What if a sherif saw?!” You say, obviously still panicking. Tyler decides to pull over.
“You’re right. I’m sorry. I was way outta line, but we’re in the middle of nowhere. There’s no cars or tractors around. We’re safe.” His voice is soft. “Just breathe, Darlin’. Just you and me.” He takes your hand, rubbing small circles in it. “I feel bad. I wanted a reaction outta you, but not like this. I never want you to feel unsafe with me.”
“I know.” You were still struggling to breathe. Tyler places your hand on his chest to feel the rise and fall of his breathing. He hopes you can sync yours with his own.
“Take it easy, sweetheart. You’re okay. Feel me breathing? We’re both okay.” He places a kiss to your forehead.
“I’m sorry… it’s not you. When I was in high school I had a crazy ex boyfriend who used to swerve in town just to scare me because he knew I was afraid of car crashes. He almost killed us a couple times, I think. I guess no matter how much time’s passed, dumb high school bullshit still affects me into my adult years.”
“Hey, that’s not okay. It’s not dumb bullshit. It’s trauma.” You lean over the console to be closer to him and he wraps his arms around you. “I would never put you in danger like that for the sake of a joke.” You could tell his blood was boiling on the inside, but he was trying to keep himself calm. He didn’t want to upset you more. He knew this was about you feeling better, not him.
“We gotta get going if we wanna try to make it by 1.” You wipe your tears.
“I don’t care how long we’re pulled over. Hell, we can even turn around if you’re not up to anymore. I don’t care about the chase. I care about you.” He moves your hair out of your face. “I can call the rest of the team and tell them to turn around right now or go without us.”
“What happened to Mr. If You Feel It, Chase It?” You joke, trying to lighten the mood. He looks into your eyes. You don’t know if you’ve ever seen him so serious.
“The only feeling that matters is the one I get when I’m with you.“
Tears start creeping up again. These tears aren’t bad, though.
“Tyler, I’m in love with you.” It just slips out, like the easiest confession you’ve ever made in your life. You both knew there was something there, but neither one of you were willing to say it. It had always been heavy flirting, awkward mornings after cuddling in the only bed left at the motel, a drunk kiss or two.
After a moment of staring in silence Tyler kisses you. Everything happened in slow motion, but in truth it was probably just the adrenaline slowing everything down. Tyler wasted no time in kissing you. It was the quickest decision he’s ever made. You don’t know how long the kiss was. Whatever it was, it wasn’t enough. Nothing would ever be enough. You’d swear off oxygen for the rest of your life if it meant this moment never had to end. You’d been pinning after your best friend for so long and finally the moment was here.
“I’m so glad you said something because you’re one of the best navigators I know and I really didn’t wanna risk losing you from the team by telling you I was in love with you.” Tyler laughs.
“Is that the only reason you didn’t tell me?” You ask.
“No, I was scared. Losing you from the team would be a bummer, but I couldn’t lose you from my life. We see a lot of loss in this business. Whenever I thought about it, the thing I couldn’t stand to lose most was you.” He runs his fingers through your hair, moving to cup your cheek.
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
It was nice to finally say it. You’d waited a long time to tell him.
“Let’s get back on the road. This time just don’t stop my heart.” You give a small laugh.
“You’re safe with me.”
“I know. You’re not like those other guys, Ty.”
You hold hands and rest on his other arm as he drives. He’s lucky he’s good at driving with one hand because he’s happy to see about 30 minutes later you’ve finally fallen asleep. Today was going to be a long day, but Tyler knew forcing the team to wake up so early was worth it. He may have had to bribe Boone 20 bucks to drive the other car up with Lily, but at least he didn’t have a third wheel sitting in the back seat. Tyler didn’t get a lot of alone time with you. Now he had 7 hours of it. It was worth it.

Hers
She came home for safety, familiarity, to find her way forward but instead, she found herself more lost than when she’d arrived.
It was only supposed to be a week. Sure, Kate thought it would be difficult to be back in the field but she hadn’t anticipated this. She hadn’t anticipated him. It shouldn’t matter. She had a job in New York, a life, a stable, safe job, her own apartment–everything she needed. But was it everything she wanted?
What Tyler had said crossed a line but that didn’t mean it wasn’t the truth. It was just something she probably already knew, deep down, and hadn’t wanted to accept. She was running away from the storm but she should know better than most that it would always catch up.
With an aggravated sweep of her arm, all of her past research was on the floor, pages floating around her before finding a place to land. She almost immediately regretted the mess but it had felt good. For the last five years, she’s avoided risk but now it almost feels hypocritical to say that she misses it.
Kate bent to gather the papers but only grabbed a few before stopping at her Cloud Physics notebook which had fallen open to a familiar page. She sat down in front of it and traced the impressions of her writing on the pages. It was too much to retrace her steps, to consider what had gone wrong. She needed to get out of her head and she couldn’t do that without getting out of this damn barn.
She knocked lightly on the kitchen door so as not to startle her mom. Being an adult, Kate felt an aversion to putting these things on her mom. Her mother had always been supportive, even when knowing her daughter’s passion was actively putting her in danger. Maybe she just didn’t want her mom to repeat the same sentiments as Tyler but she also knew she wasn’t about to come to any decision without some guidance. Just like seeing her middle school science project again, she felt like a child standing in the kitchen.
“Kate?”
“Yeah, it’s just me.” She sighed and pulled out the chair at the dining table that had always belonged to her. The smell of whatever her mother was stirring made her stomach grumble. “Where’s Tyler?”
“Oh, he drove pretty far so he’s getting cleaned up.” Kate could tell her mom was trying to sound uninterested, maybe for her sake but still she asked, “What’s his story anyway?”
“He’s just some internet star from Arkansas,” She explained, picking at a stain on the table. For a moment she thought about leaving it at that but the fire he had lit in the barn was still burning inside her. Sardonically, she added, “He’s made a living as a so-called ‘Tornado Wrangler’ but so far he’s only shot some fireworks into a cyclone and nearly killed the reporter signed on to cover him and his team.”
Her mom chuckled and replied, “Sounds like a man looking for a thrill to me.”
Again, she felt like a child relaying the latest gossip from the schoolyard but she couldn’t help but continue.
“And his whole team is this ragtag group of people who’ve never been to school for this either!”
“I see.”
“I mean sure he’s studied meteorology but they could get seriously hurt.” Kate had busied herself by fiddling with a napkin she’d pulled from the homemade holder. The shreds of it were getting smaller and smaller.  “They’re no professionals.”
Her mom hummed, acknowledging her annoyance but countered with, “Well he doesn’t seem too bad to me, he did drive all the way here.” Although her mother graciously spared her the ‘for you’ that they both knew completed that thought, she felt its weight. It was easier to make him seem unlikeable than tell her mom that it was her that was in the wrong.
“You’d believe me if you saw the shirts he sells, his face all sprawled across them.” Kate laughed, thinking of the cheesy slogans. It wasn’t lost on her that she had assumed the worst of him. She thought back to what Lily had said and felt ashamed. “Though,” She conceded, “the money does pay for food for the aftermath survivors. They were handing it  out at the last town we were in after the tornado hit.”
“Not all bad then?” Her mother turned fully to face her and Kate knew her teasing expression said all she needed to know.
“I guess not.”
_ _ _
Dinner had been passable, if not enjoyable. Kate had figured it would be awkward, that the dynamic between her and her mom would be offset by Tyler’s presence but it had flowed easily. The only gripe she had was that her mother had gone over her head to invite him to stay the night. In her ideal world, she would’ve ushered him out right after dinner saying a quick thanks for his concern but sending him on his way knowing that she’d never have an obligation to speak to him again.
Tyler had, of course, helped her mom with the dishes, leaving her to watch awkwardly so as not to take up unnecessary space in the small kitchen. She’d shot him a tight smile as he’d excused himself to his room for the night.
“Well,” Her mom said from the doorway, “I’m off to bed. Shut the lights, will you?” She didn’t wait for an answer as she made her way past the living room to her bedroom.
Kate tapped her fingers sporadically against the table, the sound echoing in the quiet house. She hadn’t been fully present for dinner. Every time she looked at Tyler she could only think about what she was doing wrong, what she was missing. As much as she resented the fact, there was no way she could make peace with the past couple of days if she didn’t get in another word with him.
She flipped the last of the switches off and made her way up the stairs, avoiding the ones she knew were extra creaky. At the landing, Kate considered just going to her bedroom but her feet kept their integrity and trudged her towards the guest room.
Her hand was poised to knock when the door opened.
“Kate?” The sound of his voice combined with the unexpected image made her jump. Whatever she had been prepared to say had left with her surprise but Tyler was already speaking again.  “Listen, what I said in the barn was out of line I shouldn’t have–”
“No you shouldn’t have…but you weren’t wrong either.”
Stepping back, he opened the door a bit more and though it wasn’t quite an invitation. It was a line she wasn’t sure she wanted to cross with his apology and her admittance the gist of what she’d hoped for. She promised herself that if he didn’t try to say anything else, she’d just turn around and walk away. He bit his lip, seeming to wrestle with something the same way she was.
“What’s the story behind you and Javi?” The question surprised her and she felt a vague excitement about his interest or rather the fact that he was interested at all. But the story itself was not something she was sure she could share.
“We met in college, he was friends with my…my boyfriend at the time.”
Tyler’s eyebrow raised in a silent question before he said, “And your boyfriend he was…”
She couldn’t stand in the hallway any longer where she was fully open to his scrutiny whether the story inspired pity or something else. Kate stepped past him into the room and started to explain,
“He was in the accident, along with two of my best friends.” She folded her arms across her chest, in a way trying to shield herself from the memories. “We were testing the polymer on what we thought was an EF1 but–”
“It was an EF5.” She nodded and his lips shifted into a sympathetic frown. Kate sat on the edge of the bed so that she didn’t have to face him head on.
She continued with, “So, I quit school and packed up to New York. Javi went back to Miami but because of the outbreak he thought he could use a second pair of eyes and invited me on.” From her peripheral, she could see the way he nodded along as she spoke, the genuine compassion still written in his features. She shrugged, unwilling to allow herself to feel the extent of the situation and the memories in front of him, “None of it matters though, I’ll be back in the city by the end of the week anyway.”
“You mean you’re giving up?” Tyler asked like it was somehow a personal affront to him or some greater injustice. Kate wasn’t sure what he cared. They’d only just met and he didn’t know her, not really.
“I’m not giving up. I can’t live like this again, risking my life every day.”
“Because of the accident?” The way he said it, like it was only a passing moment and not something that monumentally changed not only her life but her, made her response sharp.
“Yes, because of the accident.”
He was unshaken by her hostility and placed a hand lightly on top of hers where it sat between them on the bed.
“Kate, I’ve seen people get hurt too, I’ve–” She couldn’t listen to this, couldn’t have him reduce her experience by comparison. If he thought this was the way to change her mind, he was sorely mistaken.
“Yeah, Tyler, well I got hurt. I watched people die, and I’ll bear those scars for the rest of my life.” Her body filled with tension of the memory as her breath began to quicken. She let the anger take over, the simplicity of it easier than the complicated truth. “I don't know why I even–”
 “Hold on–Kate!”
Kate could feel the air his failed reach created as he tried to grab her wrist to stop her. She was fast though, spurred on by the singular goal of getting the hell away from him. When she made it to the threshold of her room, she moved to shut the door. It almost slammed fully closed but groaned as the wood crashed into the foot he’d managed to snake in.
“Go to bed,” She demanded.
“So what, you’re going to help Javi line the pockets of Riggs for the rest of the week? The real estate shark that's directly profiting off the suffering of these people?” It seemed he couldn’t help, was adept at, pushing her buttons. If she were any bolder, she’d have already struck the self-righteous expression off his face.
“I didn’t know about that, I would have never–these are my people but this isn’t the way, the polymer didn’t work and people died because of it.”
“More will too, but only if you don’t do anything.” He tried to reach for her again but she shrugged away, “It could work. Together we could do this.” Tyler’s expression was pleading, his eyes urging her to make the right decision.
“Goodnight, Tyler.”

His
The flight was thankfully uneventful and much easier than her last flight to Oklahoma when she’d been dreading the very idea of her return. There were still memories that haunted the place she called home but now she could rest assured that they weren’t losses for nothing and that she may very well be able to save someone, hopefully many someones, from the same suffering she had endured for years.
Kate dragged her suitcases through the airport and the bustle of people coming and going made her feel oddly comforted. New York was easy to get lost in and for the time, it was exactly what she needed. But it had only ever been a place she ran away to and after a while she was running too fast to ever see it for what it was. Here, in Oklahoma, she was home.
She made her way out to the pickup lanes and was met with a calm blue sky, one that she knew–or maybe even hoped–wouldn’t last. At the five-minute mark, Kate was unbothered. By ten, she considered concern. By twenty, she was on the phone. It took three calls getting sent to voicemail before her mother picked up on the fourth.
“Hey, are you alright?” She tried not to sound too concerned but it wasn’t like her mother to forget an obligation or to not pick up the phone.
“Oh, sunshine, I’m fine. It’s my truck that’s acting up,” Her mom replied. “I was on the road already when it decided to quit on me. I’m not sure how long repairs are going to take. You want me to call someone for you?” Kate sighed, more relieved by her mother’s well-being than bothered by the situation.
“No, don’t worry about it,” She answered, “As much as you don’t like it, I am a big girl. I can take care of it.”
“I know you can, baby. Don’t worry about making it here tonight, just take care of yourself.”
They exchanged ‘I love you’s before it sunk in that actually did have to take care of it. She found herself a spot on a nearby bench and tucked her luggage in beside her. Scrolling through her contacts, her thumb hovered over Javi before something urged her to keep going. Kate wasn’t sure if this was a bad idea but lately, she could handle a little risk.
“Hello?” She bit her lip, knowing this was her last chance to turn back. Still, he might not even be around or available to get her.
“Hey, Tyler?”
“Uh, yeah?” His voice was in performance mode, his uncertainty no match to his inherent charisma. Kate found herself filled with an urgent hope.
“It's Kate, Kate Carter.”
“Kate!” She could hear the smile in his voice. It was the first time she’d called him since he gave her his number and she was just beginning to regret not using it sooner. “What uh…what's going on?”
Her stomach flipped at the realization that she had to explain herself, that she wasn’t just calling him. Oh god, was this a mistake? Kate had thought there was something there when they were saying goodbye but maybe this was pushing it.
“Are you in Oklahoma by any chance?”
“I am actually,” Tyler replied before he, with a hopeful tone, asked, “Are you here?”
“Do you think you could pick me up from the airport?” She fought the urge to cross her fingers like a little girl. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if she had to call Javi but she couldn’t help but want to see where this path led.
“Of course!” Her chest tightened, a mix between excitement and worry. “Is everything alright with your mom?” Kate’s cheeks flushed, touched by his concern.
“Yeah–truck just wasn’t starting, don’t worry,” She said, hoping she sounded nonchalant.
“Alright then, I’ll be there as soon as I can.” In the background, Kate could hear his keys jingling already and she smiled to herself.
“Thanks so much. Bye.”
_ _ _
Kate had been inside, sitting at a cafe when her phone buzzed in her pocket, Tyler letting her know that he’d made it. She tossed out her empty coffee cup before regathering her things and taking a deep breath. If she was being honest with herself, she was excited to see him but she didn’t want to endure the inevitable teasing she’d be subject to should she seem too eager to be in his presence.
The sliding doors opened and it took her a minute to spot the familiar red truck. Her eyes followed the path to where Tyler was busy basking in the attention of an adoring fan. What more could she expect?
“And did you want this signed cause I could definitely sign this for you.”
He didn’t notice as she siddled up, even with the rumble of her suitcases on the concrete. She shook her head at the display of his ‘Tornado Wrangler’ persona and thought better than to let him off the hook.
With the exaggerated voice of a dedicated fan, she implored, “Oh my goodness! Is that Tyler Owens? I am your biggest fan!”
“That’s me darlin’, what can I do for–Kate.” He cleared his throat and straightened out his posture, putting on the real Tyler at the sight of her. Kate bit her lip, sparing him the laugh that threatened to escape her.
“Tyler,” She said, “You look good.”
“Well, I feel good.” Tyler stood with his hands on his hips, the two of them alone now and it seemed neither of them knew just what to say. She laughed at his remark and began to heave her luggage into the bed. Before she could lift the larger of the two bags, Tyler was stopping her with a hand on her wrist. Kate looked up at him, confused.
“Don’t make me make you get in the truck.” She glared at him, gauging whether or not he was serious. He only matched her expression. “Get in the truck,” Tyler repeated.
Kate rolled her eyes and climbed into the passenger seat. She couldn’t help but lean over toward the shift, running her fingers across the buttons. Her pointer finger landed on the tape labeled, ‘Kate’s Barrels’ and traced over his writing. When the driver's door opened, she jumped at the movement and tore her hand away.
“Headed to your mom’s?” Tyler asked, fingers tapping a rhythm onto the wheel.
“Uh, no actually just any motel close would be good. Home’s a bit far and the flight was long. I just want to go to bed.” She reminded herself that that was the only reason.
“I’m close,” He told her. Since when was he close? “I mean you could stay in my guest room and I could take you back to Sapulpa in the morning?” The idea sounded as equally dangerous as it was appealing. With a motel, she was in control of the situation but his place? There was no knowing.
Clearing her throat she answered, “That…sounds fine.”
Tyler tipped his hat toward her and then he was making his way out of the parking spot. For a little while, they sat in comfortable silence, the radio filling the empty space between them. Once they were outside the city, it was comforting to watch as farmland made up her view. The word rattled in her head again. Home.
“So, how did it end up going with the investors?” He asked. “Good, I assume since you’re back in Oklahoma.” Kate couldn’t help but smile knowing well enough already how happy he’d be to hear. Not to mention how happy she was to achieve something she’d been chasing since the possibility entered her mind.
“Yeah, it went very well actually. We uh–we got a lot of people interested and the offers were so good…I quit my job and sold the apartment. I’m back, back.”
Tyler’s smile grew to a million watts as he exclaimed, “Kate! That’s amazing!”
“Thank you, we’re really excited.” She thought she saw his grin falter a bit but she couldn’t pin down why. Still, after a moment he let out a whoop, honking the horn at the expense of the car in front of them. Kate laughed, placing her hand over his to keep him from doing it again.
“So, where you planning on living? With Javi?”
“Actually I’m not sure yet. Javi has this new girlfriend from back in Miami and they’re pretty wrapped up in each other.” His eyebrows raised and she continued, “My mom's kind of out of the way too. Plus, she’s thinking of selling since seed prices just keep going up. Says she’s sick of the weather.”
Tyler’s jaw went slack, exaggerating his shock. “Sick of the–Sick of the weather?”
“What can I say, she doesn’t appreciate the beauty of the storm.” Kate sighed theatrically. Her hand went to her forehead in a ‘woe is me’ gesture. He chuckled, punching her playfully in the arm.
“On the topic of prices though, she is right.” Tyler sighed as he turned onto a new street.  “That’s why I bought land and started from the ground up.”
“Land?” She repeated. It hadn’t been that long that she’d been gone. When and more so why had he decided to put down roots and outside of Arkansas for that matter.
“Yes, ma’am.” His mouth quirked up in a prideful smirk.
“And here I thought I’d be sharing some shitty motel room.”
They pulled into a long dirt driveway, the grass surrounding it still young. While the house was clearly new, the style had a nostalgic feel to it. It was painted a fresh shade of cream and the white wrap-around porch just screamed summer nights. If she didn’t know better she’d think she was going to visit some sweet old lady.
“Here we are, home sweet home.”
Tyler opened her door for her like a proper gentleman and she stepped out into pleasant fresh air. The whole thing was picturesque. Kate supposed she shouldn’t really be surprised considering she didn’t really know his tastes but the whole thing surprised her nonetheless.
She followed Tyler through the front door as he carried her bags inside. The interior was just as sweet as the exterior had been but Kate could see the signs that were uniquely him. There were various piles and pieces of gear strewn about that she recognized from having filled her mother’s house with. Even with the classic style, the appliances and layout were tastefully modern. She was impressed.
Kate stepped into the kitchen which seemed to be the most lived-in room. There were pictures of the Wranglers and what she assumed was his family stuck to the fridge. Her eyes drifted to a bulletin board hung up next to it and tacked up in the center of it was a page ripped out of their article from Ben, one with a picture of her. She could feel her cheeks flush even with him still in the other room. Though she wanted to, Kate knew she wouldn’t mention it.
“You hungry?” She jumped at the sound of Tyler’s voice.
“No, I couldn’t–” The same look that urged her to ‘get in the truck’ painted his face and she reconsidered her answer. “Starved.”
Tyler seemed satisfied. He pulled out a seat at the kitchen island where she could have a clear view of him whipping something together. The whole thing felt unnervingly domestic but she enjoyed it all the same.
“This place is really nice, Tyler,” Kate said. Gesturing toward his tricked-out home office–that was maybe a little too nice for a YouTube star–she pointed out, “Got a nice setup too.”
“Yeah, the team has pretty much paired off and they live here and there but we come back for a warm meal more often than not.”
“Not you though?” It had crossed her mind that maybe the sudden home ownership had been a response to some sort of serious relationship. She tried to sound casual since it wasn’t really any of her business.
Tyler smiled and shrugged. “Nah, a fearless leader has to hold down the fort.” Kate rolled her eyes and laughed at his cockiness. It was better knowing that it didn’t run deep. She thought better than to push it but still, she wanted to know what this whole thing was for.
“No, but seriously, why a house?”
“Oklahoma is the past, present and future of tornadoes. That’s no secret,” He replied like it was some well-known slogan. Yeah, the outbreak they experienced had put Oklahoma back on the map but Tornado Alley spanned a wide area, including Arkansas.
“How do you figure?”
“Well you’re here, aren’t you?” Her stomach sank, trying to decipher the meaning behind what he said. His focus was trained on the pot in front of him like what he’d said was no big deal. What was she supposed to say to that?
Without an answer, Tyler clarified, “You’ve got better instinct than anyone I’ve ever met, better than any Doppler too.”
He’d turned to her and winked in her continued silence. Kate nodded with a smile like it was casual to her too. She shifted under his intense gaze and thought it was an apt time to break the tension with something she’d been tossing around in her mind. He laid a plate of spaghetti in front of her before sitting down himself. She cleared her throat.
“I was going to wait to bring this up but…I was wondering if you would consider being partners.”
“Really?” The excitement on his face was genuine and Kate could see the surprise too. It made her feel secure in her decision.
“Javi and I both have stakes in it but he’s avoiding the field as much as he can right now. He’s got the business side under control but, like I said, he’s got someone at home who’d prefer he didn’t get blown away.”
Tyler stayed practically frozen in place. Maybe she’d overstepped her bounds after all. She could tell herself all she wanted that she wouldn’t be hurt if he didn’t want to partner with her but that didn’t make it the truth.
“What do you say, me and you?” Kate asked, bracing for his answer.
“You and me,” Tyler replied genuinely and with what she hoped was a hint of awe.
They ate silently, half from hunger and half in consideration of their future. As much as Kate didn’t want to admit it, there were other questions lingering between them. When her plate was cleared, he insisted on taking care of the simple cleanup himself leaving Kate to sit idly at the kitchen table, unable to get anywhere else without his direction anyway.
With the dishes washed, Tyler turned his attention back to her but it seemed he had just as much of an idea of how to proceed as she did.
“So, uh…” She began, uncertain where she was going.
“I bet you probably want to get cleaned up. There’s an en suite in the guest room.”
“Yeah, great.” As much as she wanted to bolt, Kate got up from the table slowly as if she were as calm as could be. Still, she didn’t wait for any instructions as to where to go. She didn’t turn back to look at him as she climbed the stairs, internally cursing herself for adding to the awkward atmosphere.
“First door on the right!” Tyler called after her because, of course, she hadn’t asked.
_ _ _
The warm water had been just what she needed, especially paired with the time away from Tyler to think. As much as there had been a sense of tension between them, her feelings had settled on contentment and maybe even excitement. They were partners now and they had plenty of time to figure everything and anything else out. They’d been through hell already and he would help her through it again.
She stepped out of the shower, her feet hitting the plush bath mat, and reached for a towel. Her hand grabbed only air. Upon further inspection, the towel rack was completely unoccupied. Shit.
“Um, Tyler?” Kate called. She waited a few minutes for his response and when it didn’t come she yelled louder. “Tyler!” She let out a breath when she heard his footsteps on the stairs.
“Yeah?”
“There are no towels in here!”
“Shit. My bad, no one has used that bedroom yet,” Tyler explained. His feet were already causing the wood floor to creak when he assured, “I’ll grab you one, be right back.”
Kate couldn’t believe this was happening. There was a good chance that she’d expose herself in the exchange. She’d even left her clothes on the bed, choosing to strip before going to the bathroom.
A few minutes later there was a hesitant knock on the door.
“Here, I brought you a few. I don’t know what you prefer,” Tyler said.
She had to assume that he was smart enough not to look. He’d been nothing but polite after all. When she opened the door, his eyes were covered by the palm of his hand, and his other arm was extended out to her. Kate tried not to laugh at the look of him.
“Thanks.”
Kate wrapped the largest towel around herself and used another to dry the excess moisture from her hair. She pulled the door back open, assuming he was gone but she was met with his figure, eyes still shielded. Nearly bumping right into him, she let out an involuntary sound something between a squeak and a groan. Tyler echoed the sound and quickly flipped his hand so he could see her. She had to assume that his subsequent turning around was motivated by her state of undress.
She didn’t know what else to do besides starting to dress. It seemed he wasn’t done talking to her just yet. After a moment, he spoke.
“Uh, Kate…I, uh, realized I didn’t say thank you just then for considering me.”
“Who else could I possibly consider?” She winced at her own words. By no means did Kate want to sound like she was unhappy, she just didn’t want to make it a big deal between them.
“Well, right, I guess there’s not many storm chasers to begin with and especially not ones who’ve studied meteorology.” Kate could hear the slight hurt in his voice even as he tried to tease and she couldn’t blame him. She’d said the wrong thing. She quickly finished pulling on her pajama pants so she could focus on the conversation before she said something else she regretted.
“Tyler,” She said softly. He still had his back considerately turned to her. Like a kid trying to pass notes in class, Kate tapped his shoulder to get his attention. Tyler smiled as he faced her and it gave her the boost she needed to say what she wanted.  “You’re the reason I’m doing this in the first place. You believed in me even when I didn’t. We’re going to be helping people and that’s because of you.”
He was shaking his head before she’d even finished.
“You can’t believe that, it's your polymer, your idea–”
She took a confident step forward, the action effectively shutting him up. The closer Kate got the more she angled up at him, his height towering over her. Her hand found its way to his jaw, cupping it gently, her thumb brushing over the stubble of his skin. Before she had the chance to close the distance, Tyler took his chance to capture her lips with his own.
It started slow, hesitant to the possibility of too much too fast but quickly gained momentum as they threw caution to the wind. It had been years since Kate had done this, never quite feeling able to move on from Jeb and the accident but now with a sense of closure and Tyler’s guiding hand she felt ready.
His mouth was eager as their kiss deepened, Tyler’s tongue painting the inside of her mouth, almost as if he was committing it to memory. Their heavy breaths filled the air and neither of them seemed willing to break the kiss as the minutes went on. It wasn’t until her fingers played at the hem of his shirt that he broke off, looking down at her through hooded eyes, his mouth swollen and flushed.
“Kate…”
The sight was too much and she couldn’t help but bring her lips back to his skin. They found purchase at his pulse point, kisses littering his neck as she made her intentions known to him with every touch.
Taking a step back, Tyler’s hands cradled her face and he searched her eyes, looking for what she wasn’t sure but when he seemed to find it a smile broke across his face. It was the same smile he sported every time the wind picked up and the radar lit up red: a man ready to face a challenge.
“You still wanna stay in my guest room?” He asked, though his joking town was limited by his heavy breathing. Kate knew he was teasing but he was just as eager as she was.
“If you keep up with that attitude I just might,” She replied, smiling ruefully.
“Honey,” Tyler beamed, “all I’ve got is attitude.”
A chuckle escaped her lips and his face turned from cocky to sincere before he leaned in to steal a kiss once more. His hands moved from her face to grasping her own as he led her to what she assumed was his room.
Kate struggled to keep up as he held his hands behind him for her to grasp. She held them awkwardly as the unusual position did not grant her a good grip. The playful air gave her butterflies but also made her feel a sense of safety, knowing that things didn’t have to be heavy between them.
Tyler turned, pulling their hands over his head so that Kate twirled around with him. He used the momentum to guide her backward into his room with his hands on her hips, attempting a cheesily seductive smolder. She used her heel to kick the door shut behind them.
Kate walked ahead of him to go sit on the edge of his bed. She could tell he was watching her closely to consider his next move but she enjoyed the idea of playing coy with him. Ignoring him, she took in the space which was surprisingly sparse especially compared to the ground floor.
“Wow, real homey in here,” Kate joked, feigning awe at the blank walls
“Oh, hush,” Tyler chided, “It hasn’t been that long since we finished construction.”
She put up her hands in surrender and replied, “Sure, sure.” He rolled his eyes at her and then his expression became soft again. Tyler walked forward, kneeing her legs open and standing between them. With just a tilt of her head they were kissing again and this time when she grabbed his shirt, he let her take it off of him. Kate paused a moment to take him in, the image one she intended to commit to memory before pulling her own shirt over her head.
The rest of their clothes came quickly but when it was time for her to remove her jeans she hesitated.
“We don’t have to do this.” Tyler reassured her, misreading her reluctance. Kate shook her head.
“It's not that it’s–” She huffed in frustration and rather than continue to overthink, pulled her pants down in one swift motion, hoping he’d move past the interruption rather than linger on the issue.
Instead, his eyes moved immediately to her lower half and zeroed in on her leg…her scar. Kate’s stomach began to churn. She knew that he knew the story but she hated that it had to be part of this moment between them. He had been part of making it possible for her to redeem herself, to make sure the losses were not worth nothing. Still, the memories and the physical signs would never leave her. It made her insecure but if he had a problem with it, this wasn’t worth continuing.
“Is this from…”
“Yes,” Kate replied flatly. She didn’t have anything to prove and she wanted more than anything to move on from this as soon as possible. Tyler looked up from the marred skin on her leg and cupped her face with one of his hands. His eyes were filled with pure admiration.
“You’re the strongest person I’ve ever met.”
Tyler’s lips were on hers again as he leaned her back into the bed, his body sculpting to hers. She felt a hand trail down her body, over her ass, before he hoisted her leg over his shoulder, his face turning towards her thigh and kissing over her scar as he lined himself up with her entrance. He looked at her until she realized he was waiting for her cue. She grabbed onto his upper arms and nodded, making it clear she was ready.
He was slow with her, caressing in all the right spots and making sure she was comfortable until he was finally fully inside her and they moaned in unison at the feeling. She hadn’t felt like this in a long time and when he took a moment to brush the hair from her face it made it all that much sweeter so much so that she laughed. Tyler looked at her, concerned but when she kissed him, he smiled into it catching her drift.
As he began to grind into her, he coaxed mewls from her lips, her hips meeting his instinctually at the pleasure. The way he watched her carefully for her reactions made her heart soar. He made it evident that they were in this together, that he cared about making her feel good. One of Tyler's hands still held her leg while the other found her clit, circling it while keeping pace and she couldn’t help the words spilling from her mouth.
“Tyler,” Kate pleaded, “Don’t stop.” He listened to her demand but she could see how it made him falter. His expression was that of awe as if he couldn’t believe that he was here with her, that she was enjoying what he was doing for them. She curled an arm around his neck and played with the hair there in a way that caused him to flush.
“I gotcha,” Tyler promised, somehow pressing them closer together, “I gotcha.”
She could’ve been embarrassed at how fast she came but Tyler didn’t give her a chance, instead riding her out through her climax and continuing to thrust even after. It was almost too much as tears of pleasure pricked her eyes and her moans filled the room. Her hands gripped the sheets, his arms, his hair, anything that she could reach to keep hold of her senses as they were overwhelmed. All she could think or comprehend was Tyler.
“I–I’m close,” He stammered, the tremble in his voice radiating throughout his body, “Kate, I–”
Her vision went white when she came again, though she could hear Tyler moan her name like a mantra, his head buried in her neck. One hand reached into his hair while the other traced absent circles on his back. It took him a minute but eventually, he came back to her.
“Hey,” He said, letting out a breathy laugh.
“Hi.”
Tyler pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead, clearly savoring the moment. Kate didn’t want it to end either but she was confident that it was only beginning. They both let out their own versions of a disappointed noise as he pulled out.
When he disappeared into the ensuite, she pulled his comforter up around her, the scent of him enveloping her as well. He came back with a damp towel and once helped her clean up, he flopped into bed beside her, pulling her into his side.
Kate placed a hand on his chest, feeling his steady heartbeat under her palm. Tyler pressed a kiss to the top of her head. She wanted to bask in the moment a bit longer but before she knew it she was beginning to yawn.
The last thing she remembered before she fell into a peaceful sleep was the sweet kiss they shared and the soft rumble of his voice.
“Goodnight, Kate.”

The screams of amused thrill seekers followed by the sweet smell of candy apples brought more warmth to your heart than you’d imagine.
A carnival camped out in the parking lot of your old community college felt typical of the town you left, resurfacing memories you swore you’d never revisit. You planned to stay in for the night, maybe catch a flick or catch up on some emails you’ve been avoiding but your little one insisted on coming after passing by one night on the way home.
“Mama, can we go to the party? Gigi says I’ve been good.” she mentioned earlier that evening. It was true, you had been taking her to your mothers while you acclimated to your new job. At first you were worried, nervous that she would throw tantrums and beg to stay with you because you were all that she had known up until this point. You packed your bags weeks into the pregnancy and handled going into labor all by yourself. It wasn’t ideal and looking back, a pretty big mistake but your mother always greeted you with grace and patience, even if you didn’t extend it to yourself.
Bailey took to her like moths to a light. They were inseparable and whenever Bailey left your mothers house, she’d always ask when she was going back.
“Well, if Gigi said you were good then we can go. Maybe we can split some pizza and ice cream?”
You’d never seen Bailey run faster to put her shoes on.
The two of you cheered during the pig race, got dizzy while riding the spinning teacups and loaded up the photo app on your phone with pictures of her riding her first roller coaster. It was rewarding to watch her navigate this space, eyes aglow. You were working yourself down to the bone as the new executive assistant to a local lawyer but if it meant that Bailey could enjoy her childhood more than you ever did, that was a sacrifice you’d make.
After a few hours of enjoying the rides, you decided it was time for dinner. You order two cheese slices and head to a quiet picnic table near the edge of the dining area.
With the slice mere centimeters from your mouth, Bailey taps you. “You’re supposed to say grace first.”
You sigh, setting the food down and crossing your hands together. Bailey watches you carefully, mimicking your actions.
“Go on, then. Say grace.”
Bailey squeezes her tiny eyes shut. “Dear Jesus, thank you for pizza. And Gigi. And momma. And piggies. Amen.”
“Amen.”
You show her how to fold the slice in half, making it easier for her to chew. You did your best to keep her clean, she insisted on wearing her new shirt tonight but children will be children. A big splat of pizza sauce lands on her shirt before dribbling down onto her jeans.
You groan and dab your finger along the excess red liquid, licking it before it has time to set it. “Bailey! Look at that, now I’m gonna have to do laundry tonight.”
“Sorry, mama!” The toddler attempts to help you but makes things worse.
You grab at her hands to stop her. “Just-can you be a big girl and grab some napkins for me?”
“From where?”
You gaze around before your eyes land on a condiments table, a full container of napkins resting beside the ketchup.
“Right there. Go on, I’m watching you from here.”
Bailey nods and takes off, going as fast as her little legs can carry her. Halfway to the table, she bowls straight into a group of people, colliding into a leg,  landing flat on her tush.
“Woah! You alright there little speed racer?” the victim asks her and you freeze.
You knew this was always a possibility. Hell, the town wasn’t that big. You knew that at any given moment, you’d stop running from your past and run right into it instead. You just wish it wasn’t tonight.
Bailey is more stunned than hurt and she doesn’t give the man a chance to help her before she’s barreling back to you.
You stand and console her, hoping that if you don’t make eye contact with him that he’d disappear.
Unfortunately, Boone wasn’t the kind of guy you’d ignore.
He calls out your name in disbelief and you exhale softly, slowly lifting your head. There he was, in all of his tanned glory. Boone certainly had grown, muscles well defined and mustache thick. His hair was longer, tucked under a signature trucker hat. Crooked smile as bright as ever.
“Holy shit.”
“Hi, Boone.”
You break eye contact to see that he was with his crew, the infamous tornado wranglers. They all stare between the two of you, the unspoken history of your relationship hanging in the air above them. The silence was fucking comical.
Lily clears her throat. “Uh, guys, we should, um get in line for the funnel cakes. Before, ya know, it gets long.”
She not so subtly pushes Boone towards you, herding everyone else off into the opposite direction.
“This is the last place I’d expect to run into you.” Boone comments, attempting to lean on the picnic table across from yours but he miscalculates his reach and nearly stumbles into you.
“Oh!” you exclaim, helping him steady his footing. “Still clumsy.”
“You know I always fell for you.” He chuckles nervously. Bailey tugs on your jeans and you rub your hand across her head in a soothing manner. She stares curiously at Boone, who squats to meet her eye line.
“And what’s your name, pretty little lady?”
You look down at her as well, nudging her gently to let her know it was ok.
“My name is Bailey.”
Boone raises his eyebrows enthusiastically. “Well, I’ll be! That’s my favorite name. Did you know that? Are you a secret mind reader?”
Bailey giggles, gaining more confidence as she steps from behind your leg and closer to Boone. “No, mister smarty pants! You’re silly.”
Boone keeps the amused look on his face, searching yours for clarification.
“Ah, mister smarty pants is a puppet in this show she likes to watch. Everyone besides my mother and I are referred to as such. His pants wear glasses. It’s weird.” you explain.
“Well, how ‘bout this?” Boone rummages around his many cargo pants compartments before pulling out a pair of sunglasses. He places them above his knee, balancing it with precision.
“It’s me, Mister Smarty Pants!”
You shake your head, pointing upwards with your finger. “Higher octave.”
Boone tries out a number of voices, not giving up until Bailey laughs. You smile tenderly at the interaction. He gestures to your table and you all sit back down, Bailey going to town on her food. You had given up on trying to keep her neat, you would be staying up late regardless. May as well get laundry out of the way.
Getting Bailey settled means your attention was shifted and this allowed Boone to fully take you in. It had been about three years since he last saw you in person, the burner instagram account he used to keep with you digitally proving futile, as you weren’t the social media type. Your face took more shape, body fuller. Your accent was masked, bits and pieces of it slipping out when you pronounced certain words. You wore an effective mask, a sure symptom of your failed relationship and attempt to acclimate to the city life.
You look up to catch him staring. He blushes and bites his lip, toying with his hat. You prop your hand under your chin, tilting your head sideways.
“What has Boone been up to all these years? Still risking your life for random people on the internet?”
“You can say that. These folks aren’t random though, they are devoted fans of our crew! We’ve reached our million subscriber milestone. Look,” Boone pulls up his youtube channel and holds the phone up to your face. “Tornado Wranglers going global, baby!”
“Wow, that’s amazing. I remember when you first started that. I’m happy you stuck with it.”
Boone nods, reading in-between the lines. The youtube channel hadn’t been the deciding factor in you ending your relationship with Boone but it definitely was a cause. You thought it reckless, constantly begging him to consider getting a “real” job. It didn’t help that when he told you that he was going to work with Tyler full time, it was the same day you found out you were pregnant with Bailey.
You see him in her all the time, it was sickening. Their off putting humor, lopsided smiles and unrelenting curiosity was enough to drive you up the wall. Bailey would ask from time to time about her “papa” and you’d always switch the conversation, redirecting her attention to something else. It had gotten to the point where she just ultimately just stopped asking.
You’d always imagine having a family with Boone. Call it a teenage fantasy but it always felt like an endgame with you two. You met during your first year of college, both stuck as chemistry lab partners. Boone was the class clown, although it wasn’t like he was actively trying to be. He was off kilter and you liked that about him, it was a stark difference from everyone else you grew up with. It also didn’t help that he was the smartest one in the class.
He became your tutor, then your friend and finally, your boyfriend.
Boone studies Bailey as she eats. “How, uh, old is she?”
You sigh deeply. “I think you can guess, Boone.”
He nods gently. “You been in town long?
“Uh, about six months. It got a bit harder juggling her on my own. My mom’s been helping out. I started a new job at a law firm, so I’m there for most of the day.”
“That explains your clothes then.”
You glance down at your corporate attire, pulling your blazer across your slightly exposed cleavage. “Had to grow up someday, ya know?”
“You think I haven’t?” Boone asks, a hint of frustration in his tone. He rarely got upset and watching him wrestle with his emotions now was a bit unsettling.
“Listen, I wasn’t expecting to have this conversation today, so forgive me if I don’t use the right words.”
Boone hums, jaw ticking. “It’s just that, you know, I’ve been here. If you needed help or whatever, I could’ve done that. Especially seeing that she’s my ch-”
You hurry to cover Bailey’s ears. “Can you not! Jesus, Boone! It’s just like you, never knowing when to quit.” Bailey watches keenly as the two of you bicker, voices muffled and mixed in with the ambiance of the carnival.
“Just like you never know when to stop running.”
It shouldn’t hurt as much as it does but Boone’s words seep into an open wound and cuts deep. You bite your lip to stop them from quivering and Boone’s facial expression gives way, aware that he crossed a line.
“I’m sorry-”
“It’s fine. It’s true, anyhow.”
It was hereditary. Your grandmother left her children when things got too hard. Your mother gave you up for a period of time, passing you around from relative to relative while she got her shit together. Then there was you, getting knocked up unexpectedly and running off from the only man who truly loved you. After eighteen hours of agonizing labor, when the nurses plopped a pale and howling newborn on your chest, something clicked. You decided that for now, you were done running. You would be the mother to Bailey that your mother wasn’t for you and that your grandmother wasn’t to her children.
Telling Boone was a part of your plan, it really was but between work and raising Bailey, there wasn’t much time left to ruminate on how to notify him that he was a father after all these years. Not after the way it ended.
You were waitressing at a diner near campus during that time. You were trying to keep up with school but it proved more difficult than you could imagine. You and Boone moved hastily into a studio apartment, despite your mother’s warnings. The two of you were in love. What’s true love compared to anything else?  Boone dropped out after freshman year, promising that his work with Tyler would catapult you two into a better situation. Just give me some time, he’d say. You did. You met Boone when you were 19. At that point, you’d turn 22, become a dropout and nothing had changed.
The straw that broke the camel's back was coming home after a long shift at the diner to find an eviction notice on your door. It had been Boone’s responsibility to give the rent check to your landlord so you were very shocked to find out that Boone hadn’t delivered the last two.
When you confronted him about where the money had gone, fearful that he began using drugs or developed a gambling addiction, he reluctantly told you that he was developing a tornado tracking device and that the money was needed for a prototype. You ran to the kitchen sink to vomit, told him that you’d save the conversation for later and went to bed.
You and your belongings were gone when he woke up the next morning.
Bailey claps her hands together, signaling that she was done with food. She points at the paper plate. “Trash?”
“Yes, baby, trash. You can put it in there by yourself, mommy can see you from here.”
Scrunching her eyebrows in deep concentration, Bailey wanders back over near the condiments table, making sure not to run this time.
“She’s pretty smart for a tiny person.” Boone notes.
“She is! My mom has been good with her. I think she benefits from spending time with her more than I do. It’s like she gets a second chance at raising a kid.”
Boone gazes at you, brown eyes pooled over with acute affection. “I’d like to maybe get a second chance at being there for you. The both of you. If you’ll have me, of course.”
Remember, you’re done running.
You smirk and attempt to smother down the heat rising to your cheeks. Boone mirrors your expression before it completely drops.
You frown, nervous that you said or did the wrong thing. “Boone?”
He stands to his feet abruptly, eyes darting across the dark skyline behind you. The air becomes still, the miniscule hairs rising along your arms and neck. A sensation you were all too familiar with.
You stand next to Boone on shaky legs, blinking your eyes rapidly to try and force them to adjust to the night sky, to see what he sees.
Thunder rumbles in the distance, lighting illuminating the terrifying reality you were about to come face to face with.
A twister.
“Boone! We gotta move! NOW!” Tyler’s voice roars out from behind you. The crowds surrounding you all begin to panic and scatter, the warning siren screeching violently.
You instinctively reach out to grab for Bailey but realize she isn’t there.
You spin in a circle, heartbeat rising erratically. Within a blink of an eye, your baby was gone. You could hear Boone repeating your name frantically, tugging on your arm, begging you to move but you couldn’t. You weren’t leaving without Bailey.
“She’s gone.” you whimper, hands flying over your mouth. “I lost her, Boone!”
He turns to look at his crew. “Go! I’ll catch up.”
“You fucking better!” Lily screams.
Boone turns to you, grasping your face with his hands. “Darlin’, we’re gonna find her, ok? We just can’t stand here cause if we do, we’re gonna die.”
You choke out a cry.
“Ok, ok! Die may not be the best word to use but it will not be good!”
He grabs you and the two of you run deeper into the carnival, calling out for Bailey. It felt useless, given the sheer amount of screams and bodies that were furiously scattering all around you. The wind picks up and scatters debris every which way, game stalls and food stands being ripped from the ground.
“Watch out!” you shout, shifting Boone out of the way of a falling dunk tank. The water rushes towards you, sweeping away a few who were not fast enough to dodge it.
“There!” he points and you follow the direction of his finger. Across the way is Bailey, standing by a water fountain, crying.
You both push your way through the frenzy, dropping at your knees to assess your daughter. Outside of sporting a few cuts and bruises, she was fine.
“Come on baby girl, we go to go!”
Bailey shakes her head furiously, planting her feet firmly in the ground. “I’m scared!”
You try to lift her into your arms but it’s no use, she won’t move. Boone tickles at her stomach to get her attention.
“You ever heard of a spider monkey before?” He asks.
Bailey shakes her head.
“So, they’re these freaky little monkeys, you know, with long legs and tails. They run around on each other like backpacks. You think you can climb on my back and pretend to be a spider monkey?”
Boone makes a few monkey noises, scratching underneath his chin. This elicits a small grin from Bailey and she gives in. Once secured to Boone, the three of you take off in the direction of the community college building, where people are taking shelter.
The tornado is unrelenting as it closes in on the parking lot, cutting power lines and sucking up everything in its path. The forceful winds tug at the sloppily put together mini ferris wheel right in front of you, the metal groaning in weak protest before it topples over, crushing a family underneath it. It blocks your clear exit to the building.
“We’re not gonna make it in time.” Boone announces.
“What are we gonna do?”
Boone scans the area with precise expertise, like a dog on the scent. It doesn’t take long before he’s taking your hand and leading you to a grassy area.
“There!” He points to an adjacent neighborhood, noticing a ditch in front of a small house. It wasn’t the best idea but given the situation, it was the only choice you had.
You dodge a few abandoned cars, trying to be mindful of your steps. Boone is gentle as he removes Bailey from her position and hands her over to you, instructing you to get in the ditch first.
“Bailey, I need you to hold on to me and keep your eyes closed, understand?”
You feel her nod against your chest. Boone hops in after you, shielding your body with his. The tornado whistles as it finally reaches you, the sound causing you to grind your teeth and squeeze your eyes shut. You don’t dare move until Boone releases his hold on you.
The place was wrecked to hell. Overturned cars, ripped carnival games, fallen trees. Years worth of reconstruction that only took seconds to destroy. It was a reason why you wanted to leave, why you wanted to raise Bailey elsewhere. You didn’t want to have to constantly expose her to such harsh weather but let’s face it, you’re a southern girl at heart. If it wasn’t a tornado, it would be a hurricane, flood or worse.
The best you could do is prepare her for this life and there was no one else better to help than Boone.
Tumblr media
TWO YEARS LATER.
“You sure about this?” your mother asks you for the millionth time.
“Nope,” you sigh. “But it’s his day, he’s a professional and I trust him.”
Your mother scoffs, patting you on the back. “Lying to yourself. Like a good mother should. Bailey! Hurry up, your father is going to be here any minute.”
Bailey comes rushing down the stairs, dressed in a similar fashion to Boone. You give her a once over, smoothing down her wild hair. “Are you excited?”
“Mhm!” Bailey hums, bouncing up and down on her feet. “I’m gonna be a storm chaser!”
“Oh, brother.” you mumble, voice drowned out by the thumping bass of country music, a signifier that Boone had arrived.
You open up the door to reveal Tyler’s truck, Boone hopping out the passenger side before the vehicle could even be put in park.
“Monkey!” Boone yells, Bailey darting out from behind you and out the door, straight into her fathers arms. He wrestles her around, mindful not to overdo it while you are watching.
The horn sounds off and Tyler pops his head out from the driver seat as he waves to you, Lily and Dexter’s coming out from the back. You cringe at the ear splitting noise and wave back, knowing you were definitely going to get shit from the neighbors.
Boone walks up to you and presses a small kiss on your cheek. “Hey hot mama. I promise to have her back before dinner.”
You stare at him sternly, lips pressed into a thing line. “And?”
Boone groans playfully. “I promise not to let her ride shotgun, use Lily’s drone, have her within 1,000 feet of a tornado, alcohol or Tyler’s groupies.”
“Very good, thank you.” You pinch Bailey’s cheeks, smiling at her fondly. “Behave, the both of you.
“Yes ma’am.” they answer in unison.
You lean against the railings of your porch, watching as Boone helps Bailey into the backseat. Your arrangement wasn’t perfect but for now, it worked. You were still trying to figure out how to best repair your relationship and you felt it necessary to take things slow, get to know one another again as you eased back into things. Romantic feelings lingered but you wanted to make sure that you put Bailey first. She’d be the most hurt out of everyone if this didn’t go well.
Boone had adjusted quite nicely to being a father in his own way, full of quirks and surprises as always. It was nice having him around again after not seeing him for so long and you would do everything in your power to make things work.
“Hey!” you call out to Boone as he climbs back into the passenger seat.
Boone stops midway. “Yeah?”
“...I love you.”
Boone’s smile nearly splits his face in half. Tyler pretends to gag. He revs the engine and pulls out of the yard delicately, cranking up the speed down the residential street like a bat out of hell once out of your line of view.
You weren’t sure how you felt about being back in the saddle with Boone but you knew you had more confidence this go round.
Besides, it wasn’t like it was your first rodeo.

Crash
Summary: Pulling this from the vault, I don't have the will to come up with a better title.
Pairings: Natasha x Reader
Warnings: Violence, blood, cursing...
--------
This was supposed to be an easy job.
You curse loudly while crouching behind a desk, loading your clip and shoving it back into your gun.
“Cover me,” the woman across from you demands and you don’t have much of a choice--watching a flash of red sail through the room and incapacitating one of the guys shooting at you. You manage to gun the other one down and take the lull in violence as an opportunity to get the hell out of there.
“Don’t,” she warns.
“I’m here on other business, this is your mess,” you hiss.
“You’re staying where I can see you,” ignoring her, you clutch the briefcase and dash towards the stairs. You can hear her footsteps coming towards you for a few seconds before a loud blast makes your ears ring. You look back, she’s out cold and there’s a rather large green man howling over her motionless body.
“Shit,” your legs won’t take you any further and you mutter another curse as you charge towards the man. He’s huge, you might just die, you think to yourself while raising your arms, here goes nothing.
“Hey!” you shout, even his eyes are a deep green, reminding you of what the sky looks like before a tornado spawns to pummel a landscape.
He growls and takes a step towards you but is quickly barraged by bullets from the other end of the corridor. Now’s your chance, you’re quick to scoop up the woman’s body and make your way down the stairs to the next floor.
You can feel the cries of the building’s foundation when you realize that taking the stairs will lead you to someplace six feet under. You find the nearest elevator and pry the door open with a gadget, using another to zip you and what you wished was anything but an unconscious woman down and out of the building before half of it crumbles down to nothing.
-----
She thanks you with a fist to your face as soon as she wakes up.
“Hey! Chill out!” you spit, you focus so much on detaining her limbs that you don’t account for her head.
You stumble back a few steps and she tackles you to the ground, not feeling half as light as she did when she was limp in your arms a few hours ago.
“If you wanted to be on top, you could have just asked,” you grunt, still struggling underneath her when she shoves a candle stick against your throat. Her legs are hooked under your hips, not giving you much room to maneuver-usually this position is followed by something a little more pleasant than this, you think.
“Who are you?”
“Y/n," you strain.
“Who do you work for?”
“Myself,” you yelp out in pain as she twists the candlestick a little farther into your neck.
“Who do you work for?”
“I just told you.”
“Not good enough.”
“It’s going to have to be--I have a quasi-handler and that’s it. I’m a one woman show,” you grunt, the candlestick loosens a bit against your neck.
“That building-”
“I was applying for a job, what did it look like I was doing?”
“Stealing.”
“You’re good,” you wince instead of wink, you’re throwing out that candlestick the first chance you get.
“How did we get here?”
“Ever heard about the theory of evolution?”
“Shut up, tell me what happened.”
“It’s hard to talk with you trying to put a hole in my neck,” she finally lets you up and you gasp, letting the air fill your lungs. You make your way over to your chair, reclining with a huff. She stays on the floor, bracing herself against a bruised and bloodied arm.
“Some big green guy busted in, knocked you out cold.”
“Bruce,” she whispers quietly enough that you don’t hear her.
“Looked like he was gonna crush you so as soon as someone started shooting at him, I grabbed you and left.”
“Where am I?”
“At least 25 miles away from the building,” you glance at her, “it’s gone, building folded in on itself as soon as we touched the pavement outside.”
“I need your phone,” she tries to get up but is quickly seated by the shooting pain in her torso. You’re out of your chair and by her side, she flinches away from you, the fiery look in her eyes makes you restrain the urge to try and find the source of pain, you’d like to keep your hands for just a little longer.
“You’re hurt,” you slowly reach for her this time. You mentally give yourself a gold star for helping with a steady grasp on her pinky while she dragged the rest of herself onto the couch.
“Phone.”
“Doctor first.”
“No,” she holds up the candle stick as a threat and you scoff before you realize that she’s too stubborn to be couch-locked by whatever pain she’s in.
“Fine, be my guest,” you hand her your phone, “try not to die on this carpet, I just had it cleaned,” she glares at you while the phone rings, you barely hear a man’s voice on the other end.
“Clint? I’m okay, can you get my location?” you almost don’t recognize this new shade of voice on her. It’s soft, laced with a little worry and care--you decide that kind of tone would have made the candlestick sting a lot less.
“That’s the only easy part, we’re still trying to recover the asset and Bruce is still on the loose-can’t get you until tonight.”
“I’m not alone,” she tips her head in your direction.
“Friendly?”
“I don’t know yet.”
“Do what you gotta do and hole up, we’ll get there when we can.”
“I’ll be here.”
“You better,” Clint hangs up and she breaks the phone with such ease that it takes you a second to realize you’re without a phone now.
“Right, I didn’t need that anyway,” you mumble, she tries to get up again and you calmly press a palm against her shoulder.
“Unexpected guests are still my guests,” you insist and she shoots you a look. If you’re going to be a hostage in your own home, you might as well be a good host.
“Stay here, I’ll get you some things, I need to call the doctor anyway.”
“Don’t call anybody.”
“Relax, he has to come get this briefcase, he’ll be discreet,” you head upstairs and she stubbornly lifts herself off the couch and takes a look around the room. Her gun and batons are on the counter but are quickly reunited with their respective holsters on her body. She notices a file with papers spilling out of it and opens it up to skim over the contents.
“Like a modern-day robin hood,” she mutters, almost feeling guilty for giving you such a hard time.
“I never got your name,” you call out from the top of the stairs. You let out an unamused sigh when you see that she is up and about. You figure if you had half of the resolve she does then maybe the trash would get taken out a lot more often.
“You don’t need it.”
“But you asked me for mine?”
“I didn’t need it either, you gave it to me anyway.”
“You had a candlestick to my neck,” you retort, she shrugs and you throw everything in your arms onto the counter.
“Clothes, towels, trauma balm,” you make your way to the fridge and push a truce-flavored bottle of water towards the woman before turning your attention to the fridge.
“I’m making tacos,” you don’t catch the high arch in her brow, too focused on filling the room with something much more delicious than the tension between you.
--------
“A few broken ribs, bruising, and some stitches for your head but you’ll live--I gave you the good drugs too,” the doctor stands up to leave when you hand him the briefcase.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t mention it, seriously--I don’t need people knowing I make house calls.”
“I hope this has everything you need,” you shake his hand.
“You always get it done,” he leaves without another word and you approach the woman splayed out on your couch. Heavy drugs giving a mild effort in wearing down the stoic look on her features.
“When are you getting rescued?”
“Few hours,” she grumbles.
“Here,” you put a plate on the coffee table, “shower’s down the hall, let me know if you need help.”
You grab your own plate and put on some music, figuring that your guest wouldn’t be much of a talker.
“You help people,” her voice a little raspy from exhaustion and the drugs.
“I try to, yes,” you sit back down, “and you?”
“Same boat,” she cracks, sitting up. You don’t see her briefly inspect the food before taking a bite out of a taco.
“Natasha,” she says, her mouth full, “Natasha Romanoff,” the corner of your mouth ticks up into half a smile, a small celebration for a rather monumental victory.
--------
Natasha towels off her hair and hobbles back to the main room.
“I told you I could help,” you catch her in time to see her wave you off.
“Maybe next time,” she gives you a smirk and before you can even process what she said there’s a knock at the door. You open it to find a man with a messy mohawk, muscles bulging out of his vest.
“Tash?”
“In here, Clint,” he briefly meets your eyes while you step aside to let him in.
“She’s only a little broken, but she’ll make it,” you joke and your newest house guest is unimpressed.
“Christ, Bruce,” Clint grunts.
“Bruce, the big green guy?”
“Yes.”
“You know him?”
“Yes.”
Your jaw drops a little in disbelief, not expecting this to be the product of some friendly fire.
“Let’s go home,” Clint swiftly throws Natasha’s arm over his shoulder and they make their way towards the door, you walk with them.
“Sorry about your phone, and your face,” Natasha’s lips pulse with guilt.
“Better than some broken ribs and stitches,” you tease, thankful to be just out of her reach when you see her arm twitch at her side.
“Don’t crash any more missions,” she says somewhat sternly.
“I could say the same to you,” you smile, she scoffs as Clint carries her to the car. You don’t move until they disappear down the road.

Storms
Hazbin TK fic
Writing this because there's currently a storm going on that's not supposed to end until 7 pm, and I'm not doing well :)
Lee!Alastor, Ler!Lucifer
Alastor might be ooc
CW: Fear of storms?? Anxiety
Summary: Hell gets a really bad storm, and Alastor isn't as composed as he normally is. When Lucifer finds out the reason why, he decides to put their rivalry aside and help him out.
BOOM
Alastor gripped his cane tightly in his hands, his permanent grin slightly more strained than usual. Wordlessly, he stood up from his seat and made an excuse to Charlie about needing to finish up some scripting for his next broadcast.
He turned and left the lobby, his shoes clicking as he walked down the hall.
CRAAACK!!
His breath caught in his throat as he picked up the pace a little, his ears starting to fold back.
"Heeey, Bambi!" Lucifer called, appearing in front of him. Oblivious to the Radio Demon's distress, he grinned, ready to harass him. "Where are you off to in such a hurry?"
Alastor gripped his cane so hard he thought he was about to snap it. "Not that it's any of your business, your highness, but I'm heading back to my room." He replied, trying to mask his fear behind his usual smile and sass.
As thunder sounded again, softer this time, more of a rolling sound, Lucifer picked up on Alastor's anxious demeanor. His tail flicked, and his ears were pinned back a little.
The king chuckled, "Oh come on, don't tell me you of all demons are scared of a little-"
BOOOM!!
Lucifer blinked and looked around. Had Alastor disappeared? The light sound of microphone feedback caught his attention, and he turned to see that Alastor hadn't disappeared into shadow, but instead dropped to the floor and hidden under a table in the hall.
Alastor's ears were fully pinned back as he shook and pressed himself back against the wall.
Sensing this was something deeper, Lucifer kneeled down to be eye level with him. "Hey," he started, speaking softly, the same way he had to Charlie when she was a child and scared of the dark, "You're okay, Al. This hotel was built with angelic power, the storm isn't going to break in."
Alastor, eyes wide still, looked up at the king. When Lucifer took a chance and reached a hand out, he was surprised when Alastor took it.
"When I was a child," the demon started, his voice losing its radio filter, "a really bad tornado hit Louisiana. It devastated our town and nearly destroyed my home. I was in the cellar with my mother for hours until we were found."
Lucifer's eyes widened a little bit, as he felt his heart break for the demon. He gave Alastor's hand a gentle, reassuring squeeze. "You know, Charlie used to be afraid of storms too-"
Alastor forced a short laugh. "Wonderful, I'm behaving like a child." He pulled his hand away, and climbed out from under the table, feeling embarrassed for having acted like that in front of his rival. As another boom of thunder sounded, Alastor froze and gripped the table so hard, the wood started to crack and splinter.
Lucifer summoned his wings and wrapped one side around Alastor. "Let me walk you to your room-" Alastor shook his head. "My room is modeled to look like the swamps of Louisiana, I can't-... I can't stay in there during a storm."
"Alright then... My room, come on." He turned and started to guide Alastor in the opposite direction. He folded his wings in and de-summoned them, as to let Alastor retain his dignity when they passed by the lobby again.
As he was being guided, Alastor didn't once argue or complain, much to the surprise of Lucifer. He actually stayed rather close to the king, ears down, forcing himself to take deep breaths.
When they reached Lucifer's room, there was a flash of lightning, causing Alastor to rush in quickly. Seeing Alastor break character so much was very odd and concerning to the king. For as long as he had known the demon, Alastor had the attitude of someone who was untouchable. And now here he was, shaking, and bleating like a scared fawn.
He sighed, feeling bad for him. He remembered when Charlie would come running into his room scared, during a storm. Back then, he would have scooped her up into his lap, and they would have counted the seconds between the flashes of lightning and the cracking of thunder. And when that didn't work, he'd- Oh there's an idea.
"Alastor?" He started, taking his hat off and setting aside. "You wanna know what I used to do with Charlie when she was scared of storms?" He asked with a smile.
The Radio Demon turned to face him. He was still holding onto that smile, but his eyes showed just how distressed he was. He tilted his head.
Lucifer waved him over, sitting down. "I'll show you, sit down." Alastor approached and sat next to him, willing to try anything at this point to calm his nerves. He set his cane aside and let out a surprised fawn squeak when the king just opened his coat. He was obviously wearing a shirt underneath, but he hadn't expected for Lucifer to touch him.
"It was a little game we'd play. You ready?" Before Alastor could question it, he saw another flash of lighting that made him jump. That was Lucifer's cue to start.
He reached forward and started to scritch his claws against Alastor's sides, up and down. The demon let out a startled yelp, and at first Lucifer thought maybe this was a bad idea. But when the host started to chuckle and lean into it, he smiled and continued.
As thunder rolled and boomed overhead, Lucifer slid his hands upward and spidered over his ribs. Alastor doubled over, laughing harder, yet he barely even noticed the loud noise, only able to focus on the tickling.
Playful claws zipped down and vibrated into his hips, and the radio host couldn't help but curl up and fall onto his side, tail wagging. He squeezed his eyes shut and laughed louder, his own hands shooting down to grab Lucifer's, yet he didn't push him away, seeming to be more than okay with this distraction.
The king gave his hips a break and reached up to gently scritch behind his ears. He couldn't stop the fond smile that painted itself across his face once Alastor's loud laughter melted away into staticky giggles.
Lucifer summoned his wings back and again, and wrapped them around Alastor, pressing them against his back. Alastor normally hated touch, but he welcomed this. It was warm, and the gentle, constant pressure against his back was helping with his anxiety, a lot actually.
When he opened his eyes, he saw Lucifer plucking one of his own feathers. His cheeks warmed and his ears folded back, but he didn't attempt to escape. He just squeezed his eyes shut again, and allowed the angel to flutter it under his chin.
Alastor burst into surprised giggles, shocked at just how ticklish it was. It definitely didn't feel like a normal feather, it was worse.
Lucifer chuckled, "Yeah, angels feathers, they're much more intense than birds." He saw the window flash, and brought the feather down to Alastor's tummy, pushing his shirt up. Right when the thunder started, he started to flick and flutter the feather against his skin, grinning to himself when Alastor jumped and curled up, laughing, gently batting at the king.
Yet he didn't even notice the storm outside.

Chapter Four - Out Wrangled
Tyler had paid for breakfast, leaving a generous tip for the gals who both gave you smiles and winks as they watched him open the door for you.
“Are you ready to experience not Youtube star Tyler, darlin?” He asked, walking over to the passenger side of his truck.
“And there’s going to be no crazy schemes or secret live streams to embarrass me?” You asked, leaning against the truck.
“Promise,” he said, opening the door for you.
You squinted your eyes at him, unsure if he was being serious or not. You got inside the truck, gently placing the flowers in the backseat so they didn’t get crushed. Tyler shut your door and walked around to the driver’s side and slid into his seat. Being inside the famous red truck made you feel like you were in some sort of spaceship with how many buttons and switches there were. Some of the labels in Boone’s handwriting made you giggle, ‘color booms’ and ‘stay putters’ were the best two of the bunch.
“Admiring Boone’s handy work?” He asked, putting his seatbelt on and putting the key in the ignition.
“I don’t know if handy work is the right word,” you laughed, “Maybe lack of English skills, but I’ll let it slide.”
“Yeah, he ain’t the brightest bulb when it comes to that, but he’s great with a camera,” Tyler laughed, turning the key and the truck firing up.
“I’m glad your music isn’t as loud as this morning,” you teased, putting your seatbelt and sunglasses on.
“I thought no one saw,” he groaned, putting his forehead on the steering wheel.
You laughed, “If I count as no one, then yes. No one saw.”
“Ugh,” he groaned, leaning back and putting his cowboy hat in the middle of the dash, “No, you’re not a no one. But I was really hoping I went unnoticed.”
“You? Unnoticed? Ha!” You said, putting your phone in the cup holder and squeezing your purse under the armrest.
“What’s that supposed to mean, sweetheart?” He asked, looking over at you over his sunglasses.
“You’re basically a star in all of Tornado Alley, Owens,” you stated, looking back at him, “You could walk into a Walmart and be surrounded by people, even if they didn’t like you, they would flock to you.”
He smirked, “Can’t help people enjoy watching what I do, but they’ll never enjoy it as much as me.”
“It’ll be a hell of a way to go,” you said, crossing your legs and looking out the window, “Headlines stating Tornado Alley’s biggest Tornado Wrangler got out wrangled in his last tornadeo!”
“Ouch,” he said, putting the truck in reverse and heading west of town.
“You’ll be fine,” you said, rolling the window down.
“You better hope so, otherwise you get to drive back,” he said, “And it’s a two-hour drive to where we’re going.”
“Which is where? Do I need to inform my next of kin where they’ll find my body?” You joked, glancing over at him.
“What?” He laughed, “You will be fine, I’ll keep you safe like my life depends on it.”
“Good, because it does,” you said, looking over your sunglasses to watch his eyebrows go up, “My team is pretty protective of me.”
He swallowed hard, “I know…”
“Why don’t we listen to the radio?” you asked, turning the dial to hear the start of  The Dixie Chicks singing ‘Cowboy Take Me Away.’
This is where you had to decide how comfortable you were going to be with Tyler as this was the song you sang that won you the high school talent show. As you were debating on it, you noticed Tyler tapping the steering wheel along to the drums, at least you knew his taste in music was the same as yours.
As if it was planned, you both started to hum along softly before it got to the chorus.
“Oh, it sounds good to me,” you sang softly, grabbing his hat and placing it on your head, “I said, cowboy, take me away.”
Tyler glanced over at you, a smile coming to his face as he heard you sing. He’s heard a lot of great artists over his years of listening to music and seeing live performances, but none compared to the melody coming out of you. On top of that, putting his hat on while being in his truck? He fell even more head over heels for you, knowing deep down he was to do everything in his power to spend his life with you.
“I wanna look at the horizon, and not see a building standing tall,” you sang softly, adjusting in your seat to put your boots on the dash, “I wanna be the only one for miles and miles, except for maybe you and your simple smile.”
As he drove he pictured just that, the idea of having a little slice of Heaven with you sounded so peaceful. All too soon the song ended and moved onto one he could sing along to, even though he knew you could too.
“Little place is a little bit understated, yeah, the O.J. 's always concentrated,” he sang, rolling his window down, “The AC’s broke so we gotta sleep naked, it’s a good day for livin’.”
“Since when can this cowboy sing?” You asked, looking over at him while swaying your feet to the beat of Joe Nichols’ ‘Good Day for Living.’
“Since I was little, how about you Miss American Idol?” He asked, “You’d be America’s next big star, bigger than Lainey Wilson.”
“Haha, I’ve tried back home,” you said, playing with the hem of your shirt, “Didn’t get me very far so I came up here and started storm chasing.”
“Have you ever thought about going to Nashville?” He asked, knowing he would hate if you left, but he wanted you to live your dreams.
“No, if I did grow into anything, I wanted to do it organically. Not the cookie-cutter molds that usually come out of Nashville,” you scoffed slightly.
“Oh, you seem like you’ve had a bad experience with it?” He asked, his tone being hushed as he didn’t want to bring up any bad feelings.
“I didn’t personally but one of my uncles tried and was told to do the opposite of what he was doing to become a star,” you said, “It is what it is, but I vowed I would never do it that way.”
“Understandable, darlin’,” he said, leaning back into his seat and driving with his left hand.
It was silent in the cab for about a half hour of the drive, just listening to music and feeling the warm breeze on your skin. You glanced over at the clock on the radio, it reading 10:26 am. You had been driving for an hour since leaving the diner, and you still had no idea where you were headed. You weren’t sure what all there was to do in Oklahoma besides chase storms or a rodeo. While you were thinking over all the things you could figure out to do in the state, your phone ringing pulled you from your thoughts.
Asher was calling you. As much as you appreciated him being a part of Storm Riders, he followed you around like a lost puppy and did everything you told him to do. If you told him to jump into the Grand Canyon, he would.
You picked up your phone, answering “This is (Y/n).”
“(Y/N)! What am I supposed to do on a day off? I’ve already gone through the whole checklist you made for me when it’s a clear day, but now I’m stuck sitting in the van waiting,” he said, “Everyone went to the big town close by to go shopping and sightseeing.”
“Why don’t you take the drone out and fly around the area, see if you can find some wildlife, and get some cool pictures of nature, Ash,” you said, bringing your hand to your forehead and rubbing circles gently.
“Where are you even? Your truck is here, but you’re not. You weren’t even here when we all got up,” he said, you could hear the shuffling of papers and a door opening.
“I went out with someone,” you stated plainly, “Go fly the drone, and if you get bored call Willow or Jade. I’m going to be unavailable for the rest of the day.”
“O-Okay,” he said and hung up.
You sighed, “I love that kid but he needs to grow more independent.”
Tyler laughed, shaking his head, “Send him with us for a while and he’ll learn quick.”
“Really?” You asked a little too quickly.
“I’ll let Ben ride with you so he can get better shots of Ol Red here and the team shooting more fireworks into a ‘nado,” he said, smirking.
“Only you, Tyler,” you laughed, leaning onto the armrest and laying your hand over the edge.
Tyler glanced over and decided it was now or never. He took a deeper breath and grabbed your hand with his, giving it a soft squeeze. Why this caused you to jump, you’ll never know, but it did.

What's In A Name? Chapter Six
Meg Harding and Kate Carter were inseparable until their friends died five ago, then she ran to New Orleans to save lives as a paramedic. But when Javi calls on his two oldest friends to help him collect data, counting on their matching natural instincts for tornadoes, Meg goes home for the first time in years. That's where she meets Tyler and the rest of the Wranglers, the YouTube storm chasers her dad likes to watch, and finds herself fitting in more with them than with Storm PAR. Meg only plans to stay for the week but will it be easy to leave when the dust settles?
If a certain cowboy has a say in it, nothing about leaving is going to be easy.
A/N: Cathy's not playing fair

Previous Chapter
“Meggy Harding, you are a sight for sore eyes,” Cathy Carter called coming from the direction of the old barn. “Come here, honey,” Meg hurried down the porch to meet her on the lawn, letting herself be swept up into one of Cathy’s strong hugs. “You’re getting skinny, have you been taking care of yourself?”
“Been tryin’ to,” Meg let her second mom place kisses all over her face. “But I’ve been busy.” Cathy pinched her cheek, giving her a playful glare.
“Well, I’ll cook up a big dinner. You here for Kate?”
“Always,” Meg tipped her head back to where Tyler remained on the porch, “And I brought a friend just in case my boot up her ass ain’t enough.” Cathy’s gaze shifted over Meg’s shoulder and the older woman perked up,
“Honey, he’s cute,” She said less than stealthily, wiggling her brows. “He your boyfriend?”
“Cathy, please,” Meg whined, tugging on Cathy’s arm. “Please be the one adult in my life actin’ normal about this man.”
“Fine, fine, I’m on my best behavior.” She messed Meg’s hair, moving past her towards the porch. “And who might you be, honey?”
“Tyler Owens, ma’am. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Pleasure’s all mine, especially since you brought Meggy here to see me,” Tyler’s smile was big and bright. He was every parent’s dream, standing there all handsome, every sentence coming out of his mouth starting or ending with “ma’am.”
Meg abandoned them, wandering off to the barn where she found Kate watching her old science project make a tornado.
“Never gets any less impressive, Katie my Lady.” Kate glanced over her shoulder with a sad smile.
“Never thought we’d be back in the barn,” Kate’s accent was a little more pronounced, heavy with emotion. “Mom never cleaned it out,” Meg looked around, taking in the plastic covered tables. Without lifting the sheets, Meg knew what was beneath each one. All of Kate’s research, Addy’s drawings, Jeb’s cameras, and my binder filled with diagrams of the human body and notes on everything that could go wrong with it. The plan back then had been to become a doctor, Meg hadn’t thought about that dream in a long time.
“We left a lot of things unfinished,”
“Wonder why.” Kate clicked off the simulator, leaning back against the table. “What are you doing here, Meg?”
“I smacked Javi, Tyler stopped me before I could hit him for real.” Kate chuckled, running a hand down her face. “We didn’t kill them, Kate.”
“I’m going back to New York,” Meg sighed. If Kate ran again, there was no getting her back, she knew that. “Don’t try and stop me.”
“We gotta do something, Katie, and runnin’s not an option anymore.” Kate’s response was cut off by Cathy and Tyler strolling into the barn, laughing to themselves.
“You brought Tyler?” Kate snapped, angry. Meg’s temper spiked back,
“What was I supposed to do, steal his truck?” Kate flinched, “Not everything can be solved by runnin’, Kate, sometimes you’ve gotta chase.”
“Well, maybe I don’t want to!” Kate shouted, tears streaming down her face, “Not everyone’s okay with the people they love-”
“Kate, go set the table,” Cathy shouted over them both, “Meg, cool off.” Dying. That was the word Kate was going to use and even though Cathy had stopped her, Meg heard it all the same. Kate saw Meg accepting what had happened to their friends as her not caring? It was like a punch to the gut, Meg physically faltering where she stood. Cathy took off after Kate, who rushed out of the barn, sobbing, and Tyler crossed the room to her.
“I’m fine,” She was not fine. “We just,” Tyler wiped away her tears with his sleeve, concern evident on his face. “This barn brings up a lot of memories.” Tyler took a good look around, “Kate’s havin’ a hard time dealing with that.”
“Just Kate?” Meg snorted, pulling her hair out of its ponytail. “Going to be honest, darlin’, didn’t think I’d walk in here to find you two arguing.”
“Yeah, well, we’ve known each other for a decade and I’m pretty sure that was our first,” Meg shook her head. “God fucking dammit, I never shoulda left New Orleans.”
“Hey, hey, hey, no need for that,” Tyler smoothed her bangs back, kissing her forehead. “Friends fight. Boone and I get into it all the time, you two will be okay.” Meg wrapped her arms around Tyler’s waist, resting her head against his chest. “I promise, darlin’, everything’s going to be okay.”
“It’s not, Ty, you can be as charmin’ as you like but I’ve got to help Javi finish getting his data and go home. It’s the only helpful thing I can do while I’m here.”
“About that…” Tyler stroked her back and Meg’s stomach dropped.
“He’s not helping people…is he?” Tyler began to fill her in on all the dirty details of Storm PAR’s involvement with Marshall Riggs and how they took advantage of people in distress to fund their research. All her earlier fight left her body with a great sigh, broken defeat replacing it. “That’s it, I’m going home.” Meg tried to pull away but Tyler held her tight, “Ty.”
“I thought you said running wasn’t an option,”
“Then call me a fuckin’ hypocrite and take me to the airport.” Meg pushed one more time but Tyler still didn’t budge. “You can’t hug me until I change my mind, Ty, it’s not gonna work.”
“Darlin’,” Tyler kissed her forehead again. “If you still feel that way in the morning, I’ll take you to the airport.” Meg expected to feel relieved but instead, she felt even more dejected.
“How’s it going in here?” Cathy came back through the doors, “You cooled down enough for dinner, Meggy?”
“I’m goin’ home tomorrow,” Tyler finally let her pull away, only for Cathy to take Meg’s face in her hands. A disapproving look on her face.
“Unless you’re talking about visiting your mama, I don’t want to hear it, honey.” She opened her mouth to argue but Cathy steamrolled right over her. “What you’re going to do is eat some dinner and get some sleep, then you’re going to finish putting your boot up my daughter’s ass and finish what all of you started. Do you hear me, young lady?”
“Yes, ma’am.” Cathy turned her gaze to Tyler, pointing at him,
“And you, she tries to run, you stop her.”
“Already on it, ma’am.”
“Good, knew I liked you. Now come on, let’s eat.”
It took less than a minute being back in each other’s presence for the girls to make up, throwing themselves at each other. Hugging and tearfully apologizing to each other, much to Cathy’s amusement and Tyler’s visible relief. Besides her great aunt Meg’s cooking, Cathy’s cooking was Meg’s favorite, and Cathy kept scooping more food onto her plate until she was ready to burst.
Then the stories started, Cathy was hell-bent on embarrassing both girls and Tyler was all ears, teasing them both. His hand was resting on Meg’s knee, tethering her to him like a lifeline. Things soured quickly the second Cathy brought up their old project, Kate storming off in the most polite way possible.
“Tyler, why don’t you go read through their old research, it’s in the white binder with the cloud on it.”
“I don’t want to push my luck with your daughter ma’am.” Meg patted his thigh, giving him the silent approval, “If you’re sure.”
“Come on, honey, I’ll wash, you dry.”
Meg turned on some 90s country music on her phone to fill the silence while they washed the dinner plates, Cathy was the one to break the silence.
“He seems like a good man, Meggy.” Cathy handed her a dish to dry.
“He is,” She agreed. “Don’t tell me my dad’s got you bettin’ on my wedding too.” Cathy gave a little shrug, failing to fight a smile. “Busy bodies, I swear.”
“What? You expect us to see you with a cowboy gentleman, who seems to love storms as much as you do, and not hear wedding bells?” Meg groaned, taking another plate to dry.
“At least tell me you’re not in on Rabbit’s pool.” The silence was deafening, “Cathy!”
“Well, there is only one bed in the guest room.” She didn’t know who she wanted to strangle first, Cathy or Rabbit. “And you and Kate shouldn’t be sharing a twin bed, the guest room has a full.”
“You’re killin’ me. So, when I wasn’t looking you pulled my bag outta Kate’s room and put it with Tyler’s? Is that what you’re tellin’ me?”
“I’ve got a hundred bucks on it happening before the end of storm season and no one said I had to play fair.”
“Dirty, no good cheater,” Meg mumbled. They then settled into silence again, finishing the rest of the dishes.
“Has Kate been chasing again? She said she wasn’t.” Meg hummed, drying off the last dish and putting it away in the cabinet.
“Javi asked us to come down and help him collect data.” God, things had seemed so much simpler only a few days ago. “So, yeah, we’ve been out chasin’ again.”
“I’m proud of you for coming back, Meggy, proud of all of you.” Meg leaned against the counter, staring up at the ceiling. There was a red mark in the center from where Parveen had eaten a Babybel Cheese, rolled the wax into a ball, and tossed it around. The little wax ball had stuck to the ceiling, the wax never fully coming off.
“I don’t know if I’m back yet, Cathy.” She tossed the dish rag over her shoulder with a sigh. “I want to help people and as much as I love chasin’, it ain’t as helpful as my job back in New Orleans. Those people,” She thought of the last patient she had transported before leaving. A ninety-year-old woman with chest pains, she had told Meg her whole life story in the back of the rig. She wasn’t scared of dying, no, June Bishop was perfectly content. Miss June had lived a long life, she had gotten married young and had three sons, all of whom went to serve in the military, she had lost everything in Katrina like so many others, and had lived long enough to see all of her grandchildren, and one great-grandchild born. Meg had held her hand the whole way to the hospital. “Those people I can help in a tangible way. I mean, if Kate,” Tears pricked her dry eyes. “If we could finish what we started, I think that’s the only thing besides a funeral that could get me to come back.”
Cathy gathered her up in a hug, both of them leaning against the counter. After some time passed, Kate came down from her room, and without a word she joined them in the embrace. A little while later, Meg shot off a text to Lily.
Meg: How’s everything going?
Lily: Boone’s a bit butt hurt but he’ll get over it - you?
Meg: Touch and go
Tyler seemed surprised to find Meg brushing her teeth in the bathroom attached to the spare bedroom when she spotted him in the mirror.
“Not that I’m complaining but I figured you’d be sharing a bed with Kate,” Tyler leaned against the door jamb of the bathroom and there was something so domestic about the whole situation that caught Meg off guard. She’d had plenty of boyfriends over the years, none lasting more than a month before either she got tired of them or they got tired of her. Sleepovers with men weren’t something she was used to though, even in a relationship she liked to sleep alone, kicking her dates out at the end of the night.
“I did too,” She replied after spitting and rinsing her mouth. “I’ve got to wash my face if you want to get changed.”
“Yes, ma’am,” He closed the door and when he was done, opened it again, watching her dry her face with a soft, pink towel. “Are you okay with the sleeping arrangements, darlin’, or should I take the couch?”
“I’m fine if you are, I am going to give Cathy an earful for it in the morning though.” Tyler followed her to the bed, claiming the side closest to the door.
“Sounds like there’s more to it than a lumpy couch.”
“Oh, there is,” Meg huffed, relaxing into the pillows, breathing in the scent of air-dried laundry. “My family’s got all sorts of bets running on us and Cathy’s bein’ a cheat.” Tyler shifted onto his side and she could feel his eyes on her while she stared at the ceiling.
“Bets that involve us sharing a bed?”
“Yes, sir,” She drawled sarcastically, turning off the lamp on her side of the bed. “It’s embarrassin’.”
“Well,” Tyler sighed, “I think if I’m being bet on, I should know what for.” Why? Meg closed her eyes. Why was her family like this?
“They bet on how long, Jesus Christ,” She took a deep breath, “They bet on how long it would take me to, and I quote, ride the cowboy.” Tyler, thank God, didn’t say anything but he did chuckle and she could feel his eyes on her. Meg wanted the bed to open up and swallow her whole, her face burning with embarrassment.
“And the other bet?” Meg took another long, deep breath before answering.
“They’re bettin’ on us getting married, Arkansas,” She flipped to face away from him. “Now go to sleep.” Tyler’s hand gripped her waist, flipping her to her other side so they were face to face. “I’m not talking about this, Ty.”
“You’re cute when you’re annoyed,” He squeezed her hip, giving her a soft smile that made her heart beat like crazy. He was backlit by the lamp on his side of the bed, a soft, yellow light highlighting him in an angelic way. “You scrunch your nose like this,” He imitated her and he looked adorable. Meg giggled, bopping his nose.
“Stop, I’m trying to be mad and you actin’ sweet ain’t helping.” He shrugged,
“Well excuse me for not wanting my girl to be mad.” His girl. Those words weighed on her chest like a cat curling in for a nap, warm and comforting.
“You are taking this whole thing about my family bettin’ on us having sex and getting married a little too well,” She narrowed her eyes at him. “What are you not sayin’?” He blushed, rubbing circles into her hip with his thumb. “Tyler I-don’t-know-your-middle-name-Owens, tell me.”
“Michael,” He muttered. Meg tilted his head up with two fingers under his chin. “That’s my middle name.”
“And mine’s Marie, now spill it.”
“There may or may not be a similar bet going with the group,” Of course there was.
“Bet, as in singular?” He nodded, “Which one do they have goin’?” Tyler’s blush deepened.
“Well, darlin’,” Tyler sighed, smiling sweetly. “Boone’s been planning our wedding since you tried to pool the wool over my eyes when we first met.” He cupped her face and she mirrored him, her hand resting on his cheek. “So they’re betting on the other part.” There were two ways Meg could go with this conversation, serious or teasing, and she’d be damned if she did anything serious while wearing Kate’s Hello Kitty sleep pants from high school.
“Well,” Meg stroked Tyler’s stubbled cheek. “Tell Boone I want an October weddin’ and he’s welcome at it whether you’re there or not.” Tyler shook with laughter, tugging her so she was head first in his chest like they had slept the night before.
“Oh, I’m gonna be there, darlin’,” He kissed the top of her head. “Crying while your daddy walks you down the aisle to me.” So much for avoiding serious conversation. Meg expected to feel a sense of fear or at least anxiety thinking about marrying Tyler but instead, she found herself smiling. His cologne was lingering on his sleep shirt and he was oh so warm wrapped around her. She could see him standing at the altar all dressed up in a suit and tie, Boone behind him as best man, and Preacher beside him ready to officiate like he had promised to when she was little.
“Boone share any of these wedding plans with you?” Meg slipped her leg between his, bringing herself just a little bit closer to him. “Tell me everything.” Tyler began stroking her back.
“He wants to do it outside, said he thinks you’d like to be where you can see the sky.” Boone knew her well, that’s exactly how she wanted to get married, not inside of some stuffy church. “Dani’s picking out dresses she and Lily won’t mind wearing as your bridesmaids, they’ve got one for Kate too.”
“Sounds like they’ve got the whole thing planned out. Lily in charge of the rings?”
“Yes, ma’am. They even roped Ben into picking out table settings and invitations, he complains but is secretly over the moon.” Tyler’s hand moved to her hair, massaging her neck. Meg groaned, not realizing how much tension had been lingering there until that exact moment.
“That feels good, Ty.” She felt herself getting sleepier, relaxing more into Tyler’s hold with each passing moment. “Keep tellin’ me about our wedding.”
“Yes, ma’am,” He kissed her hair again. “The biggest argument is what kind of flowers to get. Boone’s a romantic so he wants roses.” That made her giggle,
“Why ain’t I surprised?”
“Shh, baby,” Tyler teased, kissing her hair again. “You’re supposed to be falling asleep.”
“Don’t tell me what to do, Arkansas,” Meg sassed half-heartedly. Tyler’s ministrations paused for a moment before he gently pulled her head back by her hair. He was fixing her with one of those listen-to-me looks she’d seen on her mama’s face a thousand times before, his eyes the color of greenage before a big storm. Staring into them, she wondered if her favorite color had ever truly been yellow, or if it had been green all along and she just hadn’t found the right shade until now.
“Darlin’,” His fingers tightened their grip just a little, giving Meg a jolt of pain that only brought pleasure. “Will you please hush that pretty little mouth of yours and let me talk?” She wanted to sass him again, see what he would do but when she opened her mouth nothing but a yawn came out. He must’ve taken that as a yes, bringing her face back into his chest. He was lucky he was cute enough to get away with manhandling her like that. “Dani’s vote is on sunflowers but Ben and Lily think that lilies would be better.” Meg made an inquisitive noise, wanting to know what Tyler thought. “I’ve got a soft spot for wildflowers, especially daisies. My mama used to keep a vase of them on the counter next to the window.” Meg snaked a hand under the back of his shirt, humming in approval. “I’ll take your freezing hands under my shirt as a yes to the wildflowers.”
Tyler kept talking about color schemes and Dexter’s thoughts on what to cater for dinner. How Ben had insisted they have live music instead of a DJ and the way Boone wanted to use bandanas as pocket squares, all while Meg drifted off to sleep.
She woke to her phone ringing, AC/DC’s Highway to Hell breaking the silence of the night. Tyler’s arms were firm around her waist making it hard for her to retrieve the device from the bedside table.
“Hey, Hot Stuff,” She groaned. Tyler didn’t budge from his position curled around her. The man, she was learning, could sleep like the dead. But she would bet he’d be wide awake if she even thought of the word tornado.
“Hey, Honey Buns. How’s the storm hunting?” Nick must’ve been grabbing beignets, she could hear the familiar sounds of Cafe du Monde in the background in the late hours of the night.
“It’s good,” She decided to keep the life and death details to herself for now, not in the right mindset for a lecture. “How’s my baby, you treatin’ her right?”
“She’s purrin’ like a cougar in a college bar.” Meg chuckled, “Hadn’t heard from ya so I thought I’d check in. Cecilia misses you something awful.” Cecilia was Nick’s wife of seven years, an ER nurse at University Hospital. She and Meg would sometimes get lunch together when their days off aligned but Meg knew who was really missing her.
“Yeah, I miss you too,” Nick laughed, commenting on her ego. “The storms out here have been crazy.” Just like she predicted, Tyler stirred.
“Storm? Is that Boone?” Meg rolled her eyes, kissing him on the chin.
“It’s just Nick, go back to sleep, Sweetie Pie.” And then he was out like a light, she shook her head at him.
“Meg Marie Harding, you’ve got a man in your bed?” Nick jokingly scolded her like an older brother. “You ain’t supposed to be doin’ that outta wedlock.”
“Says the man who tried to set me up with that fire fighter who ended up having a wife.”
“Not my finest moment, I’ll admit,” He chuckled. “Well, Honey Buns, I’ll let you get back to sinnin’.”
“Meanin’ your order’s ready?” Nick hung up on her without answering and she laughed softly, choosing not to fight against Tyler’s hold, putting the phone under her pillow.
She’d be back in New Orleans soon enough, riding around in the rig with Nick, going wherever dispatch sent them. But for the first time, thinking about her life there didn’t feel right, her heart constricting the point of physical pain.
Meg traced Tyler’s jaw with her fingertips, then his nose, the arch of his brow, and his bottom lip, the pain getting worse with every second. Helping people was her job, one that she loved and felt called to, but the thought of leaving Tyler was breaking her heart.
“Tyler Michael Owens,” She whispered, watching for any signs that he was awake and seeing none. “I think I just might be fallin’ in love with you.” Meg pressed a feathersoft kiss to his lips, it lasted a second, maybe less, but she felt more in that split second than she had with any of the men Nick had set her up with in the past.
“Again, baby,” Tyler whispered, eyes blinking open. “Please.” He sounded so needy and desperate, matching her own desire for him. Meg didn’t hesitate to brush her lips against his. Tyler tilted his head into the kiss, kissing her soundly, leaving not an ounce of doubt in her mind that she loved him. It had been less than a week but Meg felt like she had known him her entire life. He made her feel safe, comfortable, and seen. The way he held her at night and couldn’t keep his hand off her leg during the day, the way he listened to her like there was no one else around, and most importantly, the way he treated her with kindness and respect. “Nick okay?” Tyler asked once they came up for air, voice raspy.
“He’s fine, just checkin’ on me.” Tyler hummed, giving her a peck on the lips once, twice, three times more.
“And how are you doing, baby?”
“Never better,” Meg kissed his chest, snuggling back into what was quickly becoming her favorite sleeping position.

This is so random but we just had bad weather where I’m at and luckily no tornadoes like we thought. But I was wondering how Cowboy!Eddie would handle comforting sweet girl if there was a tornado warning near them and bad weather? I just now he’s so sweet and soft but so very very protective😭 like that protective dominant side of him is in FULL swing for his sweet girl!!!
that's so scary and i'm so glad you're ok! i hate tornadoes. i've been through quite a few in my time and they're horrifying.
i can't decide if he'd have a storm shelter or just know exactly what to do. i definitely feel like he'd have a sense for when one was coming. something about the way the air "feels" or "looks", he'll just know one is coming. starts moving everything in early, battening down the hatches before the sirens start wailing and the skies turn dark.
i also feel deeply he's a tornado watcher. like he will stand on the porch or near the door and watch the tornado.
"eh! what are you doin'? get back in there!" eddie clicks his tongue, snapping at you from his place by the window. he made you stay in the bathroom, in the bathtub bc it's the safest place.
"eddie! you're not supposed to stand by the window!"
"i'm good. you stay in there, alright? let me watch."
"watch what? the tornado?"
"you just stay in there, alright? don't worry about me. stay in there."
and if it got bad, he'd definitely lay on top of you. he's not sure why he's supposed to do that, it's just what he's always heard to do so he does it.

Corruption
Dreams. He'd been having those dreams again. They come and go, sometimes staying for longer than he'd like. But they always ended in images of pain and destruction.
Knuckles couldn't understand why he was having them, or where they were coming from. The Master Emerald was safe. There'd been no odd surges in chaos energy. No outside threats that he could see or feel. The Emerald itself didn't seem to be too upset or anxious—as anxious as a giant rock could be—but it could sometimes sense odd vibrations in chaos or time which indicated something wrong.
Knuckles had felt none of this. It was as if the strange feelings were coming from himself.
But that was ridiculous. His only purpose in life was to protect the Master Emerald. If there was no threat to the Emerald, then everything was good, right?
Still, the dreams persisted.
He was getting worried. So worried, in fact, that he stood before his communicator, arguing with himself about whether or not to contact his friends. But what was he supposed to tell them? "I feel like there's something wrong, but the Emerald doesn't and I think it's all in my head because of these weird dreams I've been having"?
Gaia, he'd never hear the end of it from Sonic.
But the dreams wouldn't go away. And they were getting worse. Every day he woke in a sweat, hands shaking and heart pounding. But he couldn't remember the details. Just the feeling.
Pain.
Fear.
Confusion.
Destruction.
And one other.
Guilt.
He wasn't sure why. But that one made his stomach churn and feel as though it were full of lead.
He'd been losing time. One moment he'd be standing before the Emerald in the warm morning sun, and the next he'd be on his back in the forest, surrounded by broken trees as the evening approached. He couldn't remember anything between those moments.
He was scared.
He wouldn't admit it, would never say it outright or even verbalize it to himself. But he was. Something was happening to him, and he didn't know what. Didn't know why. But Tails might. He may be able to find out.
So Knuckles stood before his communicator. He'd only used it a handful of times, and Tails had made it so all Knuckles had to do was push a button to sound the alarm at the fox's workshop. His friends would come running as fast as they could to Angel Island, to help deal with whatever threat Knuckles had found himself needing assistance with.
But the echidna hesitated. What was the threat? The danger? He only had a vague feeling. Nothing concrete. But his fear was enough to make him move forward, reaching with a shaky hand toward the small device.
Right before his hand touched the big red button, a feeling came over him. His hand, his whole body shook, and his heart pounded in his chest like a war drum.
He couldn't think. Couldn't breathe. A jolt of fear and shock and anxiety overcame him, and he watched as his outstretched arm changed. It was like watching something move through water—the angles all wrong and wavy. He uttered a surprised "What?" as the first bolt of pain ripped through him. He cried out, pulling his arm back as he watched in horror as the fur he'd known for his entire existence smoothed, the color changing in a swirling pattern.
Terror gripped him, and he lunged forward to pound his fist against the button. He needed help, he needed his friends. NOW.
The communicator shattered under the force of the impact, and he had time to hope that the message would still go through, right before his mind went blank.
-X-X-X-
"Do we have any idea what we're up against?" Sonic called as he stood on the wing of the Tornado. Tails shook his head as he brought the plane around to the flat area of Angel Island that served as their makeshift landing pad.
"It was strange," he said, checking the Miles Electric attached to the dash. "Knuckles' alarm sounded for a few seconds, then went dead. That could have happened if the communicator was destroyed. Whatever it is must be pretty bad."
"If anything's hurt Knuckles, they're gonna regret it," Amy called, her brow furrowed. "I'll make sure of it."
Sonic silently agreed. He stood on the wing as Tails brought the plane in closer. The kit didn't want to land yet, instead opting to scout the area to see if they could find the problem Knuckles had called them in to help with. At first, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, until they rounded the Master Emerald shrine.
"Holy Chaos," Sonic hissed under his breath, before raising his voice to be heard over the engines. He pointed at the base of the shrine. "What is that?"
Tails and Amy leaned over to look, and both wore identical expressions of shock and disbelief. What greeted them was a large . . . something, that looked part organic, part crystalline. Colors swirled over the creature, the pattern slow and seemingly calm.
Until it heard the plane pass overhead.
It lifted its . . . head(?) to . . . look(?) at them, and a seam split in the bottom to throw out a loud sound that seemed a mix of a roar, a shriek, and an unsettling almost musical tone. The soft pastel-ish colors that had been flowing over it turned deeper and more garish, and moved as though a visual representation of the thing's emotional state.
And right now, it looked pissed.
"That must be what Knux needed help with," Sonic said, dropping into a crouch, his brow furrowed. He flicked his eyes back and forth, but saw no sign of the echidna guardian. "I don't see Knux. This thing must have been too much even for him."
"If that thing's hurt him . . ." Amy growled, her teeth gritted. She was just itching to summon her hammer, but couldn't do it until they'd landed.
"I'll land and let you two take care of that creature," Tails said, turning to come around as he descended. "I'll make sure the Master Emerald is okay, and see if I can find Knuckles."
"Sounds like a plan, little brother," Sonic said, a familiar smirk on his lips. "Amy, you catch up when you can. I'm gonna see what this thing's got."
Before Amy or Tails could respond, Sonic was freefalling, rolling into a ball to land safely near the shrine. The creature seemed to hear him—sense him?—and turned toward the hedgehog.
"Hey there, big and ugly! What's a brute like you doing in a place like this?"
The creature lumbered forward, moving clumsily on its four limbs. It almost seemed drunk to Sonic, as though it wasn't as sure footed as it otherwise should be. The colors flowing over it had faded somewhat, but still moved in a pattern that seemed like a visual representation of 'alert'.
Sonic moved toward it, watching and waiting for that first attack. It uttered growls and other sounds that made his head hurt—as though he heard them in his mind instead of his ears—but he ignored it. If this thing had taken out Knuckles, there would be some payback owed.
"C'mon big fella," the hedgehog taunted. "Show me what ya got."
That seemed to be what the creature was waiting for, as it moved forward faster, moving at almost a gallop-like gait. Sonic let it get closer before launching into a spindash, hitting it square on the . . . well, where its jaw should have been. It didn't seem to have a face—just a spot with a few crystal-like shards sticking out.
The thing lurched to the right after Sonic's attack, stumbling and moving its limbs quickly to try and stay upright. Once it had regained its footing, it turned, swinging one of the massive forelimbs at Sonic. He avoided it easily, and threw himself in another spindash at the beast's side. It uttered what seemed like a surprised sound, before tipping over and hitting the ground hard.
Sonic stood back, rubbing a finger beneath his nose.
"C'mon, you're not even trying. Why would Knux need help with you?"
He stood and watched the creature push itself back to its feet, just as he heard Amy and Tails come running from behind.
"Sonic! Are you okay?" the kit called as he came to a stop next to his brother. Sonic waved a hand.
"This thing is literally a pushover. I barely touched it and down it went."
"That's odd," Tails said, rubbing his chin with a hand. "Why would Knuckles call for help if this thing is so easy to take down?"
"That's what I said."
"Where is Knuckles?" Amy asked, twisting her head this way and that to look for the echidna. "Did you see him?"
"No. Tails?"
"On it."
The fox kit hurried away, heading straight for the Master Emerald shrine to verify its safety, and see if he could spot the wayward guardian.
When Tails was just about to reach the base of the shrine, the creature's demeanor changed like a light switch. Its head snapped up, looking over toward the shrine, at the boy about to climb the steps. It issued a sound that had all three clapping their hands over their ears, before leaping to its feet and heading straight for Tails.
"Oh no you don't," Sonic growled as he zipped forward, curling into a ball to spindash directly at the thing's face again. It moved slightly faster this time, jerking its head to bat the hedgehog away.
Tails stood for a second, frozen in terror, before lifting himself into the sky. The beast launched forward, attempting to swat the boy out of the air, when a large, heavy hammer came down on its head, slamming it to the ground with a loud crash.
"Get to the Emerald!" she yelled, pulling her hammer back for another swing. "FIND KNUCKLES!"
Tails nodded, and turned to fly up to the gem at the top of the shrine. The creature suffered another blow from Amy's hammer, but the sight of the fox so near the Master Emerald seemed to enrage it and it lashed out, knocking Amy away as it tried to regain its feet to reach Tails.
Sonic was through playing around. He zipped around to gain a better attack point, and launched spindash after spindash, crashing into the thing's side, head, shoulder, and back again before it could get an inch closer to Tails. Amy returned with an angry shout, bringing her hammer down again and again on the creature's body, her worry for Knuckles and anger at whatever this thing had done to him overtaking her.
Tails made it to the top of the shrine, and surprisingly found a number of chao gathered around the large gemstone. Exclamation points floated above their heads, and they moved forward to surround the fox once he landed, pulling and grabbing him in an excited, almost panicked way.
"What? What's wrong? Is the Master Emerald okay?" he asked as the little creatures surrounded him. They grabbed him from all sides, climbing atop his tails and grabbing his arms as they tried to convey whatever had upset them.
Meanwhile, the battle raged below. The creature roared and swung at Sonic and Amy, but couldn't connect a solid blow. Every hit the two hedgehogs threw landed, and the beast began to slow as their attack tired it out.
Tails watched the fight from his vantage point, but the chao were insistent and would not let him go. He tried to calm them, tried to soothe them, but they were almost frantic in their behavior. As he tried to pull himself from their grip, he didn't notice he'd been backing toward the edge of the platform at the top. It was a good 30-40 foot drop down, and the chao on his tail meant he couldn't fly.
Sonic got another good hit in on the creature, sending it to its belly. He clicked his tongue, shaking his head.
"This thing is a piece of cake. Why couldn't Knux take it down himself?"
"I don't know," Amy said, resting the head of her hammer on the ground as she watched it try to push itself back up. "I just wish we knew where he was."
As the two talked, the beast looked toward the shrine, anger surging at the fox that close to the Master Emerald. But it was moving away from the Emerald, which was good. It was moving closer to the edge of the top . . .
A new feeling shot through the creature, and the dark colors flowing over it in its anger and pain suddenly changed to an ice blue.
Protect. Help. Save.
The beast was up in a heartbeat, heading toward the shrine at a speed that Sonic and Amy would never have expected.
"Tails, watch out!" Sonic called when he noticed what was happening. He zipped forward but the creature was there first, pivoting around the side of the shrine and lurching forward with its hands cupped to catch Tails and his hanger-on chao just as they tipped over the edge. The fox and chao landed safely in the beast's hands, and were lowered gently to the ground.
"What the . . ." Sonic stood with his mouth open, just as Amy rushed to his side.
"Did I see what I thought I saw?"
"Why did it . . ."
Tails sat on the ground, the chao releasing him to hurry toward the creature. They patted the thing's side and caressed its head, the exclamation points changing to hearts.
"What are they . . ."
The creature shuddered, lowering itself to the ground as the colors flowing over it changed once more. At the top of the shrine, the Master Emerald glowed, and the creature's glow changed to match its green. As the three watched, the great beast began to shrink, the glow from it blinding them momentarily until it faded.
And Knuckles lay where it had been, battered and bruised.
"Oh great Gaia," Amy moaned, dropping her hammer and rushing forward to cradle Knuckles in her arms. "Knuckles? Oh, Knuckles! I'm so sorry!"
The echidna breathed heavy, his body shaking from the pain and confusion. He couldn't remember anything. He'd . . . called them, hadn't he? Why? Was there a . . .
Threat. There'd been a threat. Something had scared him, so he called them. Yes, that was it.
He lifted his head and blinked at each of his friends in turn.
"Is it . . ." He winced, his tongue running over the split in his lip. "Is the threat gone? Are you all okay?"
Sonic and Amy exchanged a glance. Amy kept holding onto Knuckles, pulling him to her in a tight hug. He grunted—he was injured, likely from whatever threat he'd called them to help with. She loosened her hold slightly, but did not let go.
"Where is the threat?" he asked, trying to push himself to his feet. "Is it still here?"
Tails moved around to stand near Sonic, and the two exchanged a glance.
"No, it's gone now," Sonic said, before taking a deep breath. "Knux, we need to talk."

Tumblr media
It was supposed to be a simple trip back to Hawkins, escaping the suit and ties of corporate New York City, but things were never that easy for Steve. Staying at his best friend Eddie’s house, he was proud of the way he was able to defy odds, now living in a nice home after success as a musician then as a restaurant owner. Both men had gotten busy, but their weekly phone calls and miscellaneous emails persisted.
When they would meet up, Eddie almost always came to New York due to his vacation rental being close, only moving back to Hawkins full time to be close to Wayne as he got older. His home was large, covered in his old band posters with their accomplishments framed on the walls.
The last time Steve had been here was over a decade ago, the photos of Eddie and his ex-wife were gone, something both men had in common after they both endured failed marriages. Only Eddie had a baby, a girl, but who only came to visit during the summer and holiday breaks.
Steve sat across from Eddie on the couch, sipping some expensive red wine that was buried in his liquor cabinet. The age had made it taste better, knowing he probably hadn’t had guests over frequently, and if he did, they would probably settle for beer.
“Surprised you have alcohol this old with a teenager around.” Steve chuckled, scratching the stubble on his chin, swirling the drink to create a small tornado in the glass.
“Tell me about it, I’m just as shocked as you are that my kid wasn’t a delinquent.” Eddie jested, pressing his fist to the side of his forehead, leaning against the leather sofa, “She’s a good kid, she’s 21 now, it’s been awhile since you’ve seen her, huh?”
Nodding, he took another sip, flowing back into the conversation of nostalgia and their current work lives. The mention of one of his restaurants made realization dawn on Eddie’s face, mumbling curses before standing.
“Fuck, I have to put in a food order at one of my locations, I gotta take this call.” Eddie groaned, grabbing his black slip on sandals that made him feel too much like an old man for his enjoyment.
As Steve went to agree, the sound of a door opening and closing made both of them look up, a moment passing before you entered. Standing a bit taller in jeans and a halter top, you slipped off your sandals. Walking past Eddie as he stood, your stride stuttered when you met Steve’s eyes.
“Hey sweetheart, you remember Steve, right? He’s staying with us for a few days, we can go to dinner or something tonight. I have to take a call outside.” He rambled, putting his hand over your hair, giving you a kiss on the forehead.
You sat down where your father was prior, ankles crossed and beneath your butt as you faced Steve. Your soft smile made him feel a little bit better, a lot of time had passed and you had grown up a lot. He wasn’t used to being around anyone else, but older male executives.
The times Eddie came to visit Steve, he didn’t bring you along as you were typically with your mom, the divorce happening fairly shortly after you were born. He would hear updates, random accolades you had garnered or something funny you did. But here you were as a college student, seemingly well adjusted and inheriting the kind eyes from your dad.
“Wow, it’s been a long time, huh? How are you? You’re in college now, right?” Steve asked, taking a final sip of his drink and setting the glass on the coaster. You nodded, signaling the small black kitten that slinked into the room to sit on your lap, who obliged and purred as you pet it.
“I’m good, in my sophomore year at Saint Mary’s,” You explained, the infamous all-girls college recollecting in Steve’s memory, “How are you? How’s Terri?”
The sharp sting in his chest didn’t get easier at the mention of his ex-wife’s name, the woman who left him for his business partner around 9 years ago. It was partially the reason Steve hadn’t come back to visit, they had moved here when another branch of the company opened here. He couldn’t stomach seeing them or the kids they eventually had, ones that she had always told him she never wanted.
“Oh, we’re not together anymore, but I’m well. Business is good, keeping myself busy.” He replied shortly, watching the small cat crawl over to his lap for some attention.
The sharp inhale from your mouth made him look up, “Shit, sorry, I had no idea.”
“No, no! Don’t worry about it, it’s been almost 10 years, I’ve been riding solo since.” He laughed, watching your shoulder deflate any tension, “Tell me about college?”
“Saint Mary’s is nice, I like my professors and the classes are interesting. I’ve made a lot of nice friends there, but it’s an all girls school so not too much fun.” You began, shrugging and looking downward, messing with the friendly cat’s tail, “There’s a boys school nearby, but they’re…”
Awaiting your continuation, Steve watched thoughtfully, remembering how much he hated when people asked him questions, but wouldn’t even look him in the face. Realizing this, blood rushed to your cheeks as his hazel eyes glistened in your direction.
“Immature. They’re very annoying.” You giggled, startling the cat who scurried off, but Steve joined your amusement.
“Makes sense, your dad and I were annoying then.” He mused, thinking about how many choices he made in the 1980s would lead him to now.
“Then?” You teased as his eyes rolled, Eddie re-enter the room with a hand covering his chest at your commentary with a dramatic scoff.
Joining the conversation, the three of you talked until your stomachs rumbled, deciding to head out for dinner. Taking you three to the same restaurant as when he was younger, Eddie waved to his favorite waitress and slid into the booth.
Cramming in years of information into an hour seems difficult, but the three of you tried your best, making the time go by quickly before and after eating. You spoke eloquently for your age, posture straight naturally and carrying yourself well. Steve noticed these things and how your eyes kept lingering on him, but it was either him, Eddie, or the napkin holder to look at.
The wine they served wasn’t as strong as the one from before, but it was decent, getting them a bit buzzed. Your birthday had just passed, making this one of the first times you were able to order alcohol, making Eddie complain about how many gray hairs he had.
The air was crisp, nipping at your cheeks and nose as you rushed to Eddie’s black truck with full stomachs. Steve gave you the front seat, watching your profile glisten against the moonlight, seeing hints of Eddie’s features on you, including his tongue poking habit.
An abrupt shriek came from Eddie’s phone, fumbling with it as he flipped it open, hitting the green button. A quick voice could be made out from the other side as you looked back at Steve, shrugging and turning around. His work voice made you hold back a laugh, having to sound much more authoritative than he ever really had to get with you.
Slamming the phone shut with a groan, he stopped at the red light and rubbed his palms down his face. Slapping his hands on the wheel when it switched to green, he went forward and took a turn down the next street.
“Some idiots fucked up one of the machines so I have to go run and fix it, I’ll just drop you guys off.” He huffed, “I swear, I hire these young people because they know about technology, but they’re the ones who break it!”
The rant lands them in front of the house, giving you and Steve an escape route as he drives away quickly. You both looked at each other for a second before erupting in laughter, making your way towards the front door, “Shit, I thought he was going to blow a blood vessel.”
When you unlocked the door, Steve held the door open, letting you go through first as you both resumed your places on the couch. The T.V. had been left on showing sitcom reruns, a laugh track coming from the boxed machine.
“I don’t think I’ve seen him that mad since I jokingly told him I was pregnant!” You joked, plopping on the couch, turning the channel to MTV.
“Jesus, don’t joke about that! Besides giving him a heart attack, you might speak it into existence.” He warned, thinking about how Eddie probably verged a panic attack when you said that to him.
You scoffed, letting your arms fall at your sides, “Well it’s a good thing I don’t really have to worry about that.”
“What do you mean-” Steve started before catching himself, cheeks flushing bright red,  “Oh, fuck. Sorry. You’re a pretty girl, it’ll happen event- Shit, that’s even weirder, sorry.”
“It’s okay! That wine must have been stronger than we thought.” You remarked, eyes watching the bright colors of the cartoon television bumpers. After a few minutes of just static filled cable, you yawned, excusing yourself to bed for the night.
Once you left the room, he threw his head back, wincing at his own stupidity from moments before. The scene replayed in his brain, hoping it wasn’t humiliating or creepy for you to basically confirm your virginity to a man almost twice your age. He had to talk to you again, he figured apologizing would make things worse, so he settled for small talk.
Walking up the big plush stairs, he had vaguely remembered the layout of the home after one visit as he drove through on his way back home. As he walked down the long hallway, he heard a soft breath, making him stop.
His hairs stood as he heard a gentle moan, followed by just a hint of wetness, looking at the wooden door to his left that had a bedazzled tiara on it that lost many of the jewels. His tipsy mind made his feet inch closer, careful of the potential of the floorboards squeaking, but not realizing the fatal flaw in the house's design.
The door creaked open as the wooden panels bumped the bottom, making both of you jump in surprise. You had changed into panties and an oversized shirt, now bringing your knees to your chest.
“Shit, sorry! I came up here to talk because I felt bad about making things awkward, but I think I just made things worse!” He revealed, looking everywhere, but your face. Fidgeting in place, his fight or flight was failing him and he could only think of the noises he heard moments before.
“Wait Steve!” You called, relaxing your legs to stretch in front of you, making his eyes cascade down them to your fuzzy yellow socks, “I have a question.”
“Uh, what? What do you need?” He sighed, blocking his view with his hands on his eyebrows, hoping the blood pumping through his veins went north instead of south.
Except he didn’t hear you speak, just the squeaking of your mattress and footsteps until your socks could be seen. Cautiously moving his hand, he looked at you as you tucked loose hair behind your ear.
His breath hitched in his throat as he smelled the faintest scent of sex and red wine from your stained lips, leaning against the doorframe.
“Sorry, I’m just curious, when did you have sex for the first time?” You spoke softly, unintentionally making his heart beat faster.
“I was 15, her name was Shelley. She was my second girlfriend.” He confessed, thinking of her and how it felt his first time. It went as smooth as first times go, losing it in her bedroom and having to be quiet because her parents were down the hall.
You sighed, turning around to walk to the bed, sitting on the edge. Looking up in confusion, he slipped off his scuffed up white Nikes before walking on your pink carpet. He knew this was no man’s land, looking at the framed photos and posters on the walls.
“It’s okay to be a virgin, it’ll happen at the right time.” He assures, sitting beside you, hiking up his jeans by the thighs. His hand found your knee, squeezing it innocently until he remembered your barely clothed state.
You tensed then relaxed beneath his grasp, turning towards him and smelling his potent aftershave. His fingers curled against your soft skin, his morals melting into a puddle as he looked at your fresh face.
“I want you to fuck me, Steve.” You pronounced, a bit taken aback by your boldness, but not missing the way he jolted yet remained seated.
“Sweetheart, we can’t-” Steve began, shaking his head and having his brown locks fall in front of his face. His hair was slightly shorter than it was in his 20s, cutting it as he entered the 90s, but it still framed his face.
“Steve, please, I won’t tell. I swear.” You promised, the growing heat between your legs becoming more intolerable, squeezing your thighs.
As badly as he wished he had gotten up, walked downstairs, and slept on the couch until Eddie returned. He found himself meeting your lips, feeling the warmth of your skin radiating before he cupped your cheek.
You turned your body towards him, climbing onto his lap and feeling the bump growing underneath his pants. Your hands snaked around his neck, pulling him in fiercely, his coarse hands finding your bottom. The clean cotton meeting your delicate skin made his hips flex, falling onto his back before flipping you over.
Sitting up on his knees, your hands beat him to his shirt, throwing it to the floor. Your hands trailed to his happy trail, his stomach poking slightly over his jeans that grew with age. He was about to question the sexuality of it until he saw your eyelids droop.
His belt came off quickly, followed by the awkward removal of his jeans, making you stifle a laugh. He took your shirt off, groaning at the sight of your tits, pert from arousal. The realization that he was likely the first one to see them made him harder, his boxers becoming tighter as he squeezed your chest.
His hands went below your waistband, finding how silky your folds were, dipping to feel your slick. Your body pressed against his with a whimper, his thick fingers infiltrating your cunt as it gripped like a vice.
Tucking your face against his neck, your gentle sounds went through his ears as his fingers thrusted into your small walls. His thumb found your clit, rubbing it in small circles to excelerate your need.
His mouth practically watered at tasting you, letting his tongue trace every line and nerve. He thought of your hands lacing through his hair and tugging as you cried at how good it would feel, how you had never felt so good. But you were already trying to wiggle his boxers down, your pussy craving something more.
Taking his hands away, he ripped them off, making you moan louder than any of his touches. His muscles flexed, throwing the torn fabric against the wall before discarding his own underwear while straddling you on his knees. Your mouth dropped at his size, a pretty red with precum spouting from the slit and balls heavy from years of his own hand.
“You sure you want this, sweetheart? A pretty girl like you could get any of those boys at school.” He questioned, knowing that you really could pull any guy in Indiana if you wanted, but you reached for his cock cautiously. You gave it a few tugs, twisting your wrist and gaining a rhythm that made his eyes roll back.
“I want you inside me, I know you can treat me better. Please.” You begged, finding yourself growing more desperate as his length grew heavier in your grasp. Chills ran down his spine when you scooted down on the bed to put your lips on his tip, sucking it tentatively.
His gut flexed, reaching forward to hold onto the headboard and the other hand cupping your cheek. The velvety feeling of your cheeks put him on the brink, the years without touch now weighing on him as you looked up at him, hungry.
Slipping his hands beneath your arms, he dragged you up swiftly as you squeaked, his strength being exerted as he spread your legs. His motions were fast, his eyes blown with eagerness, but just as he was about to run himself up your lower lips, he froze.
“I don’t have condoms, I haven’t been with anyone since my wife.” He admitted, slightly embarrassed that he had remained celibate for nine years. He had tried dating, but it was hard to move on from what he went through, opting to bury himself in his work and buy one hell of a fleshlight.
“I can take an after pill, I’ll go to the store right after.” You compromised, pulling him closer as your chests went flush against each other. His heavy breathing only escalated as he took the hand not holding him up to guide himself against your heat, keeping eye contact.
Attempting to look down and avoid his intense gaze, he only nudged you to upkeep the intimacy, making you crumble. He bumped against your opening, gasping as the mushroom tip persevered through, making him choke out a moan.
You felt his soft curls as he thrusted slowly, trying to help you grow accustomed to his size. He hushed your faint cries, kissing your head before your lips. Your nose was still cold from the bitter weather, meeting his warm one while his tongue grazed your lower mouth.
Parting your mouths to adjust the position, let gasps leave both of you, his pace becoming longer as he tried to fit at least half of himself in. You tugged on his hair as he reached a pleasurable part inside you, causing him to nip your lip. When he pulled away, you whimpered, but relaxed onto the mattress.
“That’s it, huh? Found your special spot? Your little fingers couldn’t get all the way up here, could they? I’m not even all the way in.” He teased, holding your hip firmly to create a tempo, finding the same placement that kept making you moan.
Nodding frantically, you opened your eyes to see his bore into yours, feeling the situation grew far more intimate and intense than expected. He moved your left knee up, letting his naval hit at your clit at a perfect angle.
“Deeper, fuck me deeper.” You breathlessly requested, mewls falling out as he obliged, his balls just reaching your ass, “You feel so good.”
He faltered, biting his lip to refrain from letting go too soon, counting to five in his head before picking back up. Your hands fell to your chest, toying with your sensitive nipples as your body trembled.
Looking up at him with wide eyes, he saw the nervousness in them, as if the reality of the situation began to hit as your orgasm crawled closer. He felt a tug in his heart, softening his expression and taking one of your breasts in his palm.
“Do you feel good?” He pondered and was met with a nod, “Then you’re okay. Just let it happen.”
As if he had bewitched your body, your orgasm came shortly after, making your body heat rise and mind go blank. Somehow, Steve was able to hold off, working you through your finish until you came back to reality, whimpering at the sensitivity of his touch.
He felt himself growing closer, his balls and lower gut tightening, pressing himself against your tummy to feel a subtle movement beneath. He was fully submerged, your come making his dick glide smoother.
You gripped his bicep, putting your damp forehead against his, feeling encapsulated by euphoria as you knew he grew closer. He gritted his teeth, edging himself to make this moment last as long as possible.
“Come inside me, fill me up.” You pleaded, his head snapping up, bewildered to the point of amusement.
“Don’t say things like that. I won’t be able to contain myself.” He rationalized, but your hormones were desperate for it, as if the world would stop spinning if he didn’t. You pressed his cheek to yours, your lips just at his ear, his warm breath hitting your shoulder.
“Fill me up Steve, fuck a baby into me, make me yours.” As the words left your mouth, the rope of his sanity was severed, taking both your knees and shoving them to the bed.
Those few words are ones he had been waiting for for years, all his rationality and judgment was discarded to the side. There would be a plethora of pieces to pick up as soon as he would finish, but he didn’t have the mental capacity to care. The primal need to pump you full had created tunnel vision.
The once gentle pace was replaced by a brutal one, his balls smacking harshly against the shell of your ass as you wailed. You stuttered on your own noises, rubbing your bundle of nerves as he obliterated your cunt, borderline bruising your cervix.
“Fuck!” He yelled, startling you as you gawked at the way his veins poked from his neck and hands. With a few more thrusts, he moaned brokenly as his come coated your walls and your second orgasm met his. His hand shoved yours away, rubbing quickly to the point of overstimulation, wiggling.
His body fell on top of yours, your arms wrapping around him tightly as he did the same, twisting to lay on his side. He let his softening cock fall from your cunt, feeling his own release covering himself as it poured out.
There were no words to explain what had occurred in the past hour, letting your foreheads touch in silence with closed eyes for a moment. Steve had to recoup before he even tried to act normal and he didn’t forget it was your first time, stroking your hair.
The bed felt cold when he got up, grabbing his underwear and disappearing for the bathroom. Though his touch had just been introduced, you were craving it instantly, feeling a bit like a lost puppy.
He returned with a wet cloth, wiping between your legs delicately, making you blush fiercer than when he was plowing into you. Once he had soaked most of it up, he tossed it into your laundry basket on the other side of the room, grabbing a clean pair of panties and shirt from the floor to help you redress.
“I’m sorry if I got a little intense.” He mumbled out as your head poked through the white shirt, seeing his bashfulness at his behavior. You gifted him a small smile, mumbling that you liked it through a yawn, tired eyes fluttering.
“I’m gonna go back downstairs, let me know if you need anything, okay?” Steve explained, kissing your head and bringing the blanket up to your chest, “Also, make sure you go to the bathroom, you can get a UTI if you don’t.”
He chuckled at the scrunch of your nose, walking to his own discarded clothes and putting them back on. The sweat made his jeans a bit harder to put on, thankful he chose a loose shirt for the day, snatching his Nikes he had left by the door on the way out.
He needs to stay in fucking New York.

what things have you manifested ?
Most are really private and will stay that way but here's some more general ones.
Let's start with the most recent one because I have pictures. Most are too personal to provide pictures of.
I wanted a laptop for Pinterest and YouTube so I could organize stuff better and also just layer my YouTube videos. And what I mean by that is sometimes I want to play my ASMR over music and you can't do that on mobile.
Tumblr media
I censored the other items on this list because, again, private.
Tumblr media
I opened it to my blog so you know it's my picture.
I honestly wasn't focused on my list at all because I straight up forgot lol. I remembered I made one, affirmed and then had someone bring me a computer unprompted within the hour.
When I get ADHD medication I'll be unstoppable because I'll actually remember wtf I'm supposed to be doing.
"what you focus on grows" jokes on you I don't focus.
Other stuff:
The occasional bit of money $20-200 though I've never really focused on money
I manifested a friendship where the person could understand specific experiences I had ( @caffeinatedmoonboy ) he's cool. We have a panda themed waiting room together.
Many mini instant manifestations like class being cancelled day of because I wanted to sleep, my package coming sooner, my parents buying me doughnuts stuff like that
I mainly use my power to find my headphones 💀 once I checked the case, empty. Searched EVERYWHERE and then when I checked the case a second time they had magically reappeared.
Body changes (I was literally 17 when I manifested it so there aren't any before pictures sorry)
Minor facial changes (I was going to do larger ones but tbh I got distracted and totally forgot I was doing that lol)
I got taller than my mother in under a month out of spite. "I'm going to be taller than you by summer" "sure honey" AND THEN I DID SO TAKE THAT MOM.
This blog.
Some of my moots lol
My dad is straight laced but I somehow manifested him buying me 🍃 (bad news I'm apparently really lame and hate being intoxicated)
A tornado in our area would go the other direction and then dissipate
My phone broke and so I manifested it was no longer broken.
Pinterest shuffles.

ok another post ab hermes bc i guess it’s just a hermes kind of day
i’ve really come to appreciate and admire Hermes’ voice since the first time I heard it in a dream. To me it sounds quite deep and is heavily accented (I assume with a greek accent but I don’t actually know). The first thing he ever said to me was “you’re not from around here” and I remember I was naked and standing on this white staircase in a house or palace maybe, and Hermes was just passing through. And I got the impression that I annoyed him at the time.
Since taking me on after the first rejection, his attitude towards me hasn’t actually changed all that much. I don’t get the impression that I’m ever annoying him anymore (thank gods) but he does like to mess with me a lot, and I get the feeling now that teasing me is fun for him. I suppose he treats me like a little sibling or step child.
Every time we meet in a place in my dreams, he’s leaving, like he seriously never stays put for long. It’s like by the time I get there he’s already packing his stuff and on to the next place. Hermes is always just passing through.
Hermes peers at me, like, he side eyes me a lot. Kind of shifty eyed like he’s constantly plotting something. I can never tell what he’s actually thinking, and I think he communicates so much with words because he can be tricky and mysterious that way.
One of the only times I felt Hermes fully pull his gaze towards me was (well when he rejected me but also) when I first mentioned wanting to do more charity work to make the world a slightly better place. He seems passionate about that, or at least very interested in the idea of it. He gave me some very serious advice.
I’ve never seen him sit down.
I have the very vaguest memory of dream where I met him in what seemed like the inside of a tornado or wind tunnel. But he wasn’t there to meet me, and it was one of those things where he turned around and looked at me and went “why are you here?” He was doing business with someone else who I didn’t really get a look at because I was standing behind Hermes (tall by the way? Not like giant mountain tall but just like a pretty tall guy) and I couldn’t see past his shoulders. I wonder if Hermes has to deal with his devotees popping up randomly when he’s going around doing his job. Huh.
anyways i’m gonna go shower now.

Hey hun! For the drabble thingy:
"Where is my bra?!" + Jake Lockley
💀💀
Tumblr media
pairing: jake lockley x fem!reader
warnings: jakes a menace. that's it.
a/n: hope you enjoy this, my love!

"Where is my bra?!"
The apartment was a mess. Everything had been thrown, scattered, tossed around. It quite literally looked like a tornado had torn through the small apartment. You were fuming, though. Cursing under your breath as you moved about the apartment, throwing clothes and blankets in your wake.
And there Jake stood in the corner, an amused smirk on his lips as he leaned against the wall, arms crossed in front of him, just watching you storm about.
"You're not even going to help me look for it?" You asked, seeing him just standing there.
"Amor, how am I supposed to know where it is?"
"Well you're the one that took it off of me, asshole."
You both knew there was no animosity behind the name. Jake could practically hear the chuckle you were holding back.
"Why does that mean I know where it is?" He asked with a smirk as he moved to sit on the edge of the bed next to where you were standing.
"You didn't pay attention to where you threw it?" You asked, looking down at him incredulously. At the shake of his head, you shook yours in disbelief, throwing your hands up in exasperstion. "Of course not, you never pay attention–" you had started as you turned to finish your search.
But he stopped you before you could even finish the thought. He grabbed your wrist and pulled you to him so you were sitting in his lap, your back against his chest.
"Of course I paid attention. I was paying special attention to your pretty tits," his hands crept up your sides until he was cupping your breasts through one of his button ups you had thrown on. His lips were on your neck and you could feel that damn smirk on his lips. "I did give a fuck about where that lacy little bra landed."
You swallow thickly as you thought back to the night before. You knew what he was doing. Which is why you quickly shook your head and stood up from his lap.
"I'm going to be late for work, Lockley. Give me the damn bra!"
"I told you, I don't have it," damn, he was insistent. Looks like you're gonna have to play dirty too, then.
"Fine...I'll just go to work without it," his smirk faltered as yours started growing.
"Que?"
"Since neither of us know where my bra is, I'll just go to work without one on," you shrug like it's the obvious solution. He stands from the bed and reaches toward your hands.
"Amor...why don't you just stay home?" Like hell was he going to let you out of the apartment without a bra. Not when your shirt you were going to wear to work was tight enough that itd be obvious you didn't have one on. The thought that someone else would be able to see what was his? It made his blood start to boil.
"No, I'm out of sick days, I have to go in."
"But everyone's going to be able to see—"
"Not if I wear one of your shirt."
His heart stopped, he swears. "Que?"
"I can just wear one of your buttons ups. They're big enough, no one will be able to tell," you explain with a grin as you see the wheels turning in his head.
He liked the sound of that. You wear his shirt, everyone seeing how big it is on you, them knowing it's not yours. They'd all know it was his shirt, that you belonged to him.
"Well, when you put it that way..." he grins crookedly, making you chuckle as you step up to him.
"We'll just find the bra later, yeah?" You say softly as he grins down at you, nodding and pecking your lips.
"Sí," he says softly before reaching around and slapping your ass lightly, chuckling when you gasp. "Now go finish getting ready, we don't want you being late, do we?"
"Alright, alright," you chuckle, as you continued moving about to grabs your pants and shoes to finish getting ready.
And before he knows it, you're walking out the door, but not without giving him a kiss first and wearing his shirt, as promised.
As soon as the door closes, he staring at it with a knowing smirk, his hands in his pockets.
"You gonna tell her that her bra's been in your pocket this whole time?" Steven pipes up from the fishtank reflection, though he already knows the answer. Jake turns to him, his smirk growing even more.
"Por supuesto que no, hermano."

Korrasami Weekly Prompts: Autumn
An Endless Autumn
Asami stood on the cliff that overlooked Yue Bay. The breeze from the ocean buffeted her lone form, scented with brine and the reminder of someone that Asami wondered if she'd see again.
She scuffed her boot into the dirt and knelt to pick up a leaf-adorned rock. Holding up the leaf, she twisted it back and forth. Red veins marked the golden tone of the fibers, and its edges crinkled with decay. She held it into the wind and released it to watch it flutter and soar up toward the clouds above.
Hefting the rock, she threw it as far as she could, and it was soon lost to the waves, the sound of its plunk lost to the beat of the ocean against the cliff.
"You know, you could throw it farther with a bit of airbending."
The familiar voice came from behind her.
Asami was used to it. She'd imagined her voice talking with her dozens of times in the last three years. "You know I'm a nonbender," she said, knowing she probably sounded crazy if anyone was around to witness.
"Well, yeah. I meant I could airbend it farther for you."
Asami sighed. "Sure, if you were here and not just in my head."
"And what makes you think I'm not here?"
Asami huffed. "You haven't been for three years!" She knelt and grabbed a fistful of dirt. The soil crumbled between her long, slender fingers. "And here I am, once again talking to you like you're here. I really am going crazy."
She stood and dribbled the soil over the cliff's edge. Bits of broken leaves fell with the soil toward the surf below.
"I don't think you're crazy. I think you're hurt and grieving."
Asami rolled her eyes. "Talking out loud to a voice in my head is crazy."
"Asami, come on. Just turn around and get down here, dammit."
That was the temptation wasn't it? Asami would come to this ledge weekly at the same day and time. She'd look over the bay toward Air Temple Island, and she'd hold conversations in her head with her, despite knowing it was continuous torture.
The ask to turn around would always happen, and she'd carefully climb down, keeping her back to the trees that hugged the slopes behind her. The ledge, more of a pillar that jutted out away from the mountain's slopes, overlooked the pathway to the mountain's peak, where the voice always seemed to emanate.
If she never looked, she'd never have to face the fact that she was slowly losing her mind.
Maybe she ought to head back, even though she'd barely begun her vigil. Staying here until the sunset was her usual fare, but something about how real the voice sounded today had her unnerved.
"I'm not falling for that," Asami said with a hint of anger. This was her vigil though. She couldn't let the voice tear her from it now. She scowled and sat down on the section of the ledge that faced the bay, her legs over the side. "Every single time you ask me that. And I know where that leads! No. So how about we get back to the usual?"
Her fingers dug into the soil and the fallen leaves that coated the ledge. The stone under it was granite, the hardness scraping against her fingernails.
"The... usual? What do you mean?"
"Playing coy now?" Asami laughed bitterly. "It's the vigil. You're supposed to ask me about my week. Or mock me for my stupidity. Asami Sato, the CEO of Future Industries, the philanthropist, community leader, who is in love with a ghost, desperate for what can never be. Here I am talking as if you're real. Keeping watch in hopes you'd return."
"Asami... I would never mock you. Do you seriously do this every week?"
Asami frowned, the urge to turn around even stronger, especially considering her voice was being strangely obtuse. She leaned back, her hands pressed into the dirt on either side of her, and looked at the clouds above. A hint of grey marked the edges of them, likely a storm brewing, and the cool wind had slowly increased in velocity.
The reds and golds of fallen leaves swirled like mini tornadoes on the breeze above her. An odd juxtaposition of her dark mood and desperate hope.
"I don't know why I like Autumn," Asami said, hoping if she changed the subject, the voice would go back to normal. "It's the season of melancholy. Where the world that was decays into the world that will be once winter ends. I suppose that's been my life, you know? Always trapped in autumn. In the decay of the world that was, but I never make it to winter, never to spring, never to the time of growth, where the world that will be springs forth."
The huff of what sounded almost like a polar bear dog echoed behind her.
"Wow, that's both beautiful and really sad. I guess I never really thought about Autumn like that. We don't really have it in the South, you know?" The crunch of rocks and leaves under boots drifted up from the path below. "So uh, how about you come down and you can tell me more about autumn?"
Asami's imagination was really in overdrive today, wasn't it? Was it because of Jinora's last phone call that they had a lead on where she might be?
Asami sighed. The ledge itself was narrow, barely enough for her to stand and sit, and the climb down to the path below fairly perilous, considering how the pillar jutted out over the surf at an odd angle. Part of the reason she'd chosen this spot was for the thrill of the climb, the fact that no one else could fit up here, and for the solitude it carried.
"Not falling for that either," she said, curtly. "The vigil is till sundown. You know that."
"What? That's it. I'm coming up there!"
Asami frowned. The voice had never threatened that in the past. "There's not enough room," she said.
"Then I'll just earthbend more ledge! Seriously, Asami, do you know how hard it was to find you? I tried calling, tried going to your office, and if it weren't for Jinora's tip, I wouldn't have found this place. So can you please listen and stop pretending I'm some damned voice in your head?"
Asami scrambled to her feet and before she could stop herself, she looked back for the first time in three years. The mountain's slope rose up behind her, the trees thick, but path at the base of the pillar held only footprints.
Of course, there was no one there.
"Dammit, dammit! I broke the rule." Asami grabbed a fistful of dirt and threw it at the path below. "Never look behind, never, ever look behind." She trembled at the sheer force of her grief, how it saturated her from her head to her toes. Tears stung her eyes, and the urge to throw herself off the narrow ledge haunted her yet again.
She'd never do it. Not if there was a sliver of hope of seeing her again, but today, the urge was far stronger than it'd ever been.
Asami dropped to the ground, pulled her legs up against her chest, her face in her knees, and shuddered.
The stone below groaned, the pillar trembled, but then it steadied. Quiet fell around her like the fallen leaves of autumn.
"Hey." The crackle of broken twigs sounded in front of her. "Hey, I really am here." Her words broke into a sob. "Please, Asami, look at me."
Hands grasped Asami's arms and gently pulled them away from her face.
Startled, she lifted her head, only to freeze in shock.
The pillar's narrow top was much wider from the earthbending, and there, kneeling in front of her, was someone Asami had feared she'd never see in person again.
Short chestnut hair was shorn short around her ears, and her skin was a deep brown with copper undertones. Her blue eyes regarded Asami, her mouth pursed in worry. Her clothes weren't blue at all but a green tanktop and pants, her boots the desert variety Asami had seen at Misty Palms Oasis back during the days when she thought maybe the world had hope. That maybe she could have a happy ending.
"No. No, I'm hallucinating..." Asami's shoulders shook. Tears blurred her vision. "You're not real."
Korra's fingers brushed away her tears. "I'm real. I'm just sorry it took me so long. You deserve so much better..." Korra's voice broke into a sob. "But I'm here now, okay? You don't have to do this vigil anymore."
Asami rocked forward and wrapped her arms around Korra for the first time in three years. And her arms collided with a real person. Korra's scent of ocean and soil flooded her nostrils, her body warm, her muscles solid under her soft skin. Sobs ripped through Asami's chest, and she held on tighter, afraid that if she let go, Korra would vanish again.
Korra's arms encircled her. She stroked Asami's hair and pressed her lips to the side of Asami's cheek. "It's okay. I'm here now. And I'm not leaving again, okay?"
The wind blew autumn leaves past their embrace and out toward the ocean. Asami's chest heaved, and she buried her face in Korra's hair. Maybe this year she'd finally escape her endless autumn and step into a new season, one of potential and hope instead of grief and melancholy.
With Korra's arms around her, that hope felt more real than it had ever been in her entire life.

I've been told I should in fact flame Pokémon characters for PPE violations, so let's go.
Specifically I'll stick to the professors and use their appearance from the main game they first appeared in, because I've played almost all of those. Most if not all of them are implied to be biologists or bio-adjacent. I've done my time in academia on top of my current job still being in bio labwork so I know how this is supposed to go.
As for criteria, let's say basic bench science PPE standards (close-toed shoes, long pants, and no long dangling hair or accessories), and in the interest of fairness I'll only go after people who are at least attempting to dress for lab by wearing a lab coat or other obvious PPE item. I also won't worry about things that can be fixed up in a minute or two before going into the lab itself, like buttoning up the lab coat, putting on gloves, etc. Honestly wearing a lab coat outside the lab isn't really supposed to happen, but it's not the end of the world and also if I stuck to that I'd have to cancel everyone.
(Am I being a horrible pedant? Maybe, but I've also never had to fill out lab accident paperwork, so I think I'm still winning.)
Oak
Tumblr media
This is normal except for his shoes looking alarmingly like slippers. I suspect that's an issue with this specific piece of art though, since later versions do clearly show normal shoes. Do not wear slippers in lab.
Elm
Tumblr media
Really short labcoat, possibly just a weird art choice? Also more or less normal. Looks amusingly like my cell bio professor if you squint a little.
Birch
Tumblr media
If this is supposed to be for lab you need long pants, and something that isn't sandals/flip flops. If this is supposed to be for the field, better shoes and pants are probably still a good idea, and the lab coat is useless - it can't protect you from basically anything out there, and if you're worried about contaminating the environment it's also woefully inadequate. To be honest though, the fact that he couldn't deal with a level 2 Zigzagoon makes me think he isn't a field biologist at all. I've met those people at conferences and they'll casually do things like run back towards a probable tornado when their data or equipment is on the line. I heard two (2) angry jaguar stories at the same dinner and in both cases the reaction was basically "If I die, I die". In conclusion I think this is a really bad lab outfit and not a kind of suspect fieldwork outfit, and the only thing I can say in its defense is that I did in fact see someone try to do cell culture while wearing shorts back when I was in SoCal. More accurately, I heard him getting busted by the lab manager from the other side of the lab.
Rowan
Tumblr media
Not dressed for lab at all, so no comment. Looks like a math professor.
Juniper
Tumblr media
The miniskirt is very bad. Credit where credit is due though, good job on the comfortable nonslip footwear - you'd be surprised how easy it is to go flying if someone's gotten a bit of water on the floor. I've also decided at this point that I'm not going to worry about interesting style/art choices on the lab coats themselves, like whatever is up with that collar.
Sycamore
Tumblr media
Roll down your coat sleeves before you go in and this is fine. On a real person I'd say that length of hair likely needs to be secured somehow, but if we assume it stays in position via anime physics instead of falling into things we can ignore that.
Kukui
Tumblr media
No shirt, short pants, open shoes, no science. +1 for safety glasses -1000 for everything else. EH&S is coming for your ass.
Magnolia
Tumblr media
Some places are okay with a long skirt or dress instead of pants, given that the main idea there is to not have exposed skin that can either get hit by a chemical spill/dropped object or shed contaminants. The dress, shoes, and no socks combo here is... maybe not the greatest? However if I remember right she's basically retired when we see her in game, so it may not be an issue if she's not doing lab work anymore.
Turo
Tumblr media
I hate to say it, but technically this passes. The only immediate issue I see is that in the rare case that you do spill something bad on yourself you need to yeet both your coat and any affected item of clothing as fast as you can, which might be challenging with the space onesie. If it's impermeable to whatever got spilled that's theoretically okay, but I've seen the chemical compatibility charts. Nothing is immune to all possible spills even if you stay away from the nasty shit the chemists have.
