over the weekend my apartment had multiple gas issues (strong gas smell thag lesd to fire dept being called, uncapped gas valves, water boiler leaking carbon monoxide, and a separate unit unrelated to the original gas smell having a gas leak) and more which lead to having no hot water, no heat (thats back thankfully), no washing machine, and a friends unit having no working oven.
and my biggest takeaway from dealing with all of this is, even if there is no formal tenants union in your area: connect with your neighbors if you have the option. obviously thats not always gonna work, but my building has s group chat with at least one person from every unit, but almost every tenant in the building added in. this has been honestly incredible both for safety reasons (warning about things going on, cops, slippery steps etc) but ALSO incredible for the fact that with all this thing going down, we could keep each other in the loop on both what was going on, and connect to send emails to the landlord enforcing our tenant rights.
community is so essential, so if you have the option of forming a community with your fellow tenants. i highly recommend it
