It‘s so lovely how the whole reason Snow kept the games going (at least in the movie I don‘t remember the specifics of the book) was to remind himself and others of the „true nature of humanity“. Nevermind that these are completely artificial and unnatural conditions.
The opposite came out of his little social theatre. The biggest rebels, were the ones that made it out. The ones most willing to sacrifice themselves for all of Panem, were the ones that saw the horrors in these games and decided „this is not who we are. This is not who we should be forced to be.“ (yes maybe some of them just had nothing left to lose and wanted Snow’s blood, but not all. Just look at Finnick and Annie) We see repeatedly that people act in great kindness in these games. They just never make it onto the screen. And the victors know. They remember when no one else saw.
This just drives home Haymitch‘s point about how incredibly, incredibly lucky Katniss was. Yes she had an army and multiple rebels working behind the scenes and an arena of adult rebels at her back.
But why was that? It‘s because the chips just fell the right way for all of Panem to be allowed to see her kindness. She volunteers for Prim. That‘s fine. It‘s within the rules. She sings the song for Rue? The world needs to see this. It didn‘t matter that no one saw her cover Rue in flowers. They let her sing her song. They left her this moment of interdistrict kindness. Because that fit the image that others and she had created. A girl who cares about the little ones. They showed her caring for Rue because she had the image of volunteering for her baby sister. And obviously they had to show her protecting Peeta since that was the finale. The moment with berries is significant, even if you don‘t read some grand rebel motivation into it. At the heart of it is the fact that… Snow wanted this to be a moment of proving his point. When it comes down to it, humans will rip each other to shreds. But Katniss refuses. And. Choses. Compassion.
It‘s heartbreaking that it was Katniss‘ and Haymitch‘s images (and probably whoever was head gamemaker at the time but I digress) that made all the difference.
We can‘t show Haymitch caring for Ampert or Lou Lou or Wellie. No no no that doesn‘t fit the image he created!
Tribute kindness. That‘s what finally led to the inferno. Katniss was not the first. But she was definately the luckiest.
the longer i sit with it, the more i think that the saddest (not without some tough fucking competition, obviously) realization about sotr to me is that almost all the tributes really, truly, did not treat the games like they had a chance.
in the original trilogy—and even in The Ballad—the tributes felt like they were genuinely scheming and training and vying to win. with every other games, it seemed like the kids held onto this hope that they would be The One to make it, the one to become victor, even if they didn’t always say it aloud. despite the odds, they clawed as close as they could to victory, even if it meant playing into the capitol’s game and sacrificing their honor or morality.
but in this one? they come into the training rooms expecting to die. even the careers, though they swagger about and act like hot shit, feel younger than the careers have ever felt to me before. they collectively seem more resigned and bitter than in past/future tributes. their motives were all so unified against the capitol in a way that was reminiscent of the 75th games—where half the tributes were already a part of an organized rebellion to begin with.
while the theme of ‘i want to choose how i die, i don’t want the capitol to use me’ is prevalent in every book, this quell felt especially grim and determined. i kept expecting suzanne collins to undermine the camaraderie she gave the Newcomers. i kept expecting someone to decide ‘fuck it, i’m going for it on my own and i’ll backstab whoever i need to to do it.’ i kept expecting betrayal and desperation and a true competition.
but no—like wyatt, knowing his odds and choosing to protect the weaker—like ampert, knowing he’s charming and smart enough to make a decent bid for victor, yet rebelling anyways—like maysilee, knowing she’s near powerless, but spitting in the capitol’s face anytime she can—like all the newcomers, knowing they hardly have a shot, but absolutely refusing to betray one another—
they remained steadfast in their hope to die dignified and honorable, to die fighting against the true enemy, and that makes it so much more heartbreaking.

district 6 headcanons
district 6 is mostly located around modern-day pittsburgh, and has a large steelworker population as well as those who work in the production of trains, hovercrafts, and the parts for boats and cars
they are also the shipping centre of panem, which is one reason the district has such a big drug problem
it is important to district 6 citizens to be hardworking and resourceful
before the dark days, district 6 had a reputation for being headstrong, often protesting their treatment by the capitol, and being one of the first to rebel
to tamp this down and keep the citizens complacent, the capitol encouraged illegal opiate trafficking in district 6
this opiate trafficking intersects with gang activity in district 6 - usually overlooked by peacekeepers to keep the district addicted to drugs
ghosts are an important part of folklore in district 6, with several factories and tunnels being believed to be haunted
there are rumours of 'greenmen', the ghosts of missing train workers who died in electrical accidents and haunt the tunnels with a ghostly green glow
this is a way for the people of the district to explain/understand the amount of train workers who are killed or imprisoned by the capitol, for witnessing things they shouldn't in other districts
food in district 6 is usually hearty and resourceful - many dishes are some variant of meat in a bun, and lots of people eat scrapple (patty of meat scraps fried with cornmeal and flour)

I find it so interesting that Silka felt the need to justify killing Wellie to Haymitch.
Like… this girl has been training for her entire life to go into a child murdering competition. She‘s a highly trained killer. This is what she does. What she‘s supposed to do.
Yet when Haymitch finds her with Wellie‘s head and screams „What did you do?“ her knee jerk response is „She tried to kill me!“
Maybe… when Haymitch dropped her that chocolate… for just a second, she too realised who the real enemy is.
But that thought was way too terrifying to actually let grow.
There‘s a reason she shouts that she will win these games for the glory of the capitol. She‘s trying to correct her previous „betrayal“ of the hand that has fed her her entire life.

headcanons for the d6 doves!! Even though nobody asked for them but whatevss
• So They were all around the younger side, Wellie being 12 (pretty sure that's canon) Velo and Miles being 13 and Atread 15, but like just turned a month or so.)
• They were probably all very sweet kids, but them being absolutely terrified in this situation (totally justified obvi) made them a bit skittish, also probably the real reason why they said they'd stay neutral.
• Velo was a bit of a snarky girl when she wanted to be, she was also the most distant to Haymitch at first but she quite quickly warmed up.
• Hay was def an older brother figure to Wellie, Velo and Miles. To Atread it was more of a "I'll just Join in" situation-maybe turned crush. Like, in a celebrity crush way.
• Wellie saw Miles' and Velo's bodies at some point during the bloodbath. And Atread had to pretty much drag her away because of how much it terrified her.
I have like a bunch more but these are the most fully thought out ones
(Live reaction of me whenever one of the doves died)

Wellie's death in Sunrise on the Reaping haunts me.
Was it Haymich's biggest mistake?
Maybe.
She could have been his Rue. Even better, he could have helped her win. She was so close. We don't know much about her, but him actually sacrificing himself to save her would have been an act of rebellion Capitol couldn't delete.
Instead, he was too focused on "Painting his poster" that no one ever got to see. He leaves her even if she begs him not to and she's gone while his plan fails once again.
Poor little girl. She deserved better.

One thing I know I can rely D1 on is to kill the most harmless member of an alliance before getting insta killed by their way stronger ally
God bless their dumbass-ness in three canon games now

Ampert, gesturing to Haymitch: Lou Lou, look what you did! You made Mom upset!
Wellie: Mom, please don’t cry, we’re sorry!
Lou Lou: I’m sorry Mom... :(
Haymitch, near tears: I DON’T REMEMBER GIVING BIRTH TO ANY OF YOU

did anyone else get the impression that wellie from sotr was a victim of child abuse? of course, the behaviour of a child facing imminent death and suffering would probably be pretty similar to the behaviour of a child who had been abused, but a few things made me think that suzanne wrote her that way on purpose.
first of all, wellie "recoils" as haymitch approaches her to give her his lunchbox after hers was taken by the careers. again, very normal for any child in her circumstances, but more indicative of something deeper when read with other evidence.
she immediately apologizes for the district 6 chariot hurting louella, which was obviously not their fault. she also thanks haymitch for not blaming them. apologizing needlessly and assuming that they will be blamed are both noted behaviours in child abuse victims, especially the latter.
before haymitch goes on for his interview, he promises wellie despite what he might say in the interview, he would never betray the newcomers. he specifically says, "i will never hurt you, okay?" this phrasing is very deliberate, especially since during his interview he never even implies that he would attack or betray the newcomers. wellie claims that she knows, and her eyes are "full of trust". through the lens of my interpretation, this can be taken as wellie clinging to a kind protector that she's never had before.
while her behaviour in the arena can't be taken as any indicator of how she is outside the arena, because she's literally starving to death, her extreme insistence that haymitch doesn't leave her could line up with the rest of my evidence. has she been abandoned, neglected, or left alone before? her immediate assumption is that maysilee abandoned the newcomers, not that she got separated from them by accident. wellie is smart enough to realize this and seems to be a good judge of character; perhaps her assumption was influenced by past neglect.
finally, a couple comparisons can be drawn between wellie and lou lou, who we know was tortured and abused at the hands of the capitol. they are both very thin, prone to intensity, and quiet. while none of these things actually indicate that wellie was abused, the comparison itself matters. it reinforces the idea that these little girls share similarities, and have potentially suffered in similar ways.
also: wellie comes from district 6, which is implied to be suffering from a morphling/opiate epidemic. it is not a far reach to say that her guardian could have been an addict, and consequently an unstable, neglectful, or abusive caregiver.

Can someone explain to me the significance of this here.
The children our main characters feel some need to protect are constantly being described as birds.
Haymitch has is little flock of doves in district 6 and Wellie. Haymitch even at some point thinks of Loulou as one of the flock. Louella becomes equated with the dead baby mockingjay that Lenore Dove found.
Katniss has Rue, who she described as looking like a little bird trying to take flight. And Prim with her little duck tail.
I feel like there‘s a deeper meaning behind this somehow. What‘s the deal with the baby birds!? Help. Is it just a literary device to make us connect all the babies that need protecting?
