WujiWatch: CQL Rewatch Episode 18

I tagged a lovely gifset from this episode with the tags “#some people go their whole lives without finding a zhiji #and wwx somehow ended up with two.” Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing have helped each other before, most notably on Dafan Mountain, but this is the episode where they truly become a team—where they show how deeply they understand one another. The moment that gets me is when Wei Wuxian asks Wen Qing for a sedative to drug Jiang Yanli… and Wen Qing reaches under the book she’s reading for a little paper packet, already prepared with the proper drug in the proper dose. She knew he would ask, and she’d already resigned herself to helping him do it. That’s her side. When she holds it out to Wei Wuxian, he doesn’t look the slightest bit surprised. That’s his.

These children who were raised by not-quite-parents, in homes that gave them everything but safety, who learned to govern their faces and bite their tongues and be what those not-quite-parents needed them to be, because if you were needed, that was as close to safety as you could get; these geniuses, too smart to be understood by anyone but one another, innovators out on the edge of the possible, possessed of extraordinary gifts turned to ends they never wanted; these bruised idealists who can’t turn away from people in need even when they know they’ll pay the price, and those they love will pay it, too—they know each other. Down to their souls, they know each other.

Wei Wuxian will know and be known by Lan Wangji, too. But Wen Qing will never have this kind of intimacy with anyone else. She might have had it with Jiang Cheng, in another life—with their shared values of loyalty and duty, their quiet longing and sharp political instincts. But in this one, that possibility is sacrificed on a hilltop in Yiling. She knows him, in a way no one else ever will, up to her wrists in the red insides of him. But her chance to be known by him in turn is gone forever. No truth can survive that big a lie.

I’m so curious if during Wei Wuxian’s Yiling Patriarch era the people of Yiling could recognize him.

We know he went into town and was treated pretty normally. It could be that people didn’t know who he was, or they knew did and didn’t care, either of which would be incredibly funny:

Yiling citizen: Oh look there’s the radish guy! He’s quite nice, always sweet to the kids and his radishes are surprisingly good!

Visiting cultivator: that’s the Yiling Patriarch, Wei Wuxian

doubly hilarious if this is an AU where jgy has already begun to try and use Music Makes You Lose Control - nmj has to go to his sworn brothers and explain that his doctor thinks bottoming might fix him better than music, and whilst lxc is smiling politely and doing worldslongestyeahboi.mp4 in his head, jgy is sitting there frantically trying to figure out how he could poison nmj with his dick instead.

here's a few reminders for the mxtx fandom

1. Wei Wuxian had 2 older sister figures in his life and they both died trying to save him and in the end failed since he died anyway. (RIP Wen Qing and Jiang Yanli)

2. Mu Qing only ever had his mom other than XL and FX and she died a mortal death. We don't know anything about FX's mortal family.

3. Wen Ning was experimented on for 13 years in captivity after seeing his sister's ashes and blames himself still for wwx's downfall

4. He Xuan cannot leave the world even after his revenge to Shi Wudu and is purposeless for all of his immortal life.

5. Jin Ling will never taste her mom's handmade favourite soup.

6. Canon Feng Xin and Mu Qing do not know what happened at the temple to Xie Lian.

7. Jiang Cheng will probably never be good enough in his own eyes (until he has like grand-nephews or something)

8. Shi Qingxuan will (probably) die a mortal death.

9. Some of Nie Huaisang's last words to Nie Mingjue were that he never wanted to be a clan leader.

10. XL and WWX both tried to protect a certain demographic that got wiped out anyway and made them public enemies and reason for their eventual downfall making it essentially ineffective.

11. All the calamities are actually gods who could or did ascend heaven.

12. Xiao Xingchen killed himself after finding out he wiped out villages full of innocent people and his own best friend who he gave up his eyes for. And realising his pursuit of helping the world was worthless.
