I've been wanting another hognose for years and years
But the morphs I like best are staggeringly expensive :(
Luckily for me I got a windfall that will cover my upcoming surgery, a bunch of bills, and had a good chunk to spare for fun stuff...sooooo...
Meet Astarion, male snow Western hognose :3

Hello beloved blog!
I just learned about the existence of Southern Hognose snakes - is there a reason why you don't see them in the pet trade? Are they noticeably different to Eastern and Western hoggies?
Hello hello!
Southern hoggies (Heterodon simus) are uncommon in the pet trade for many of the same reasons easterns (H. platirhinos) are. They're much more finicky and fussy than the more popular westerns (H. nasicus) and have a great deal of difficulty switching to frozen/thawed rodents. Most keepers just aren't equipped to provide a regular diet of appropriately-sized frogs, toads, and other amphibians!
H. simus, in addition to that struggle, are classified as a Vulnerable species, a step above being Endangered. They are a classic herpetological case of a species whose conservataion is extremely difficult due to data limitations (they're hard to find in the wild due to being fossorial, and population decline isn't helping). They're threatened mostly thanks to the destruction of longleaf pine forests in their range caused by urbanization and climate-change fuelled wildfires. Because of this, they're illegal to own, buy, and sell not only in much of their range but in many other US states, so the trade of them is severely limited.

Heyyyy! How are you! I’m doing well myself but I need some more South Park goths X Reader! So I came to the best person I know!
May I please Request all goths X Reader who has a pet snake and how would they react when coming over to there S/O house seeing a snake out of its cage and on the floor? Anyways Hope your doing well and make sure to eat and drink! ༼ つ ◕◡◕ ༽つ
Hello friend! I’m doing amazing, glad to hear you’re doing well yourself!
Thank you for the sweet reminder to eat and drink, I appreciate that! And don’t forget to do the same, make sure your eating, drinking and sleeping good!
I love love L O V E snakes, so this ask was so fun! I hope it’s what you were looking for!
WARNINGS: snakes, reptiles without legs
~~~~~~
Michael:
- Michael is the most unphased by the fact you have a snake
- He had come to your house to paint with you, an activity you have done for years
- He waltzed into your bedroom, only stopping when he sees you sitting cross legged on the floor, looking down at the space infront of you
- He took notice of the beautiful California King snake lazing around, watching as it slithered towards you
- “Oh… you have a snake now. Wicked”
- He listens as you tell him all about your new pet, affectionately refered to as ‘Snakey’
- Snakey took a liking to Michael, shown by when the reptile slithered its way into his hand, curling around his fingers and taking a nap in your boyfriend’s hold
- Michael was impressed by your pet, referring to him as both of y’all’s kid
- He’s gonna spoil that snake more than he spoils you, even though it’s hard to top that
Pete:
- Nope
- Nope
- NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE
- Burn the fucking house down
- Pete is not a fan of snakes
- Not even the harmless little Western Hognose you’ve had for years
- Everytime he comes to your house, he demands you put ‘Hoggy’ away before he steps foot into your room
- It didn’t matter if Hoggy has never bit you, it was still a snake and Pete despised snakes
- The only way you could ever convince him to even look at your pet was if you stayed 10 feet away and held it close to you
- He didn’t mind if you had Hoggy, of course he’s not gonna make you get rid of him
- But if you ever pull Hoggy out of his enclosure, Pete’s going to magically have something to do until you let him know that Hoggy has been recaged
Henrietta:
- Henrietta is excited
- She’s a fan of all creepy crawlies, and your Ball Python was her latest obsession
- Everytime she goes over and ‘Mr. Slithers’ is out, she’s going to pick your snake up and watch in childlike fascination as the reptile wraps around her arm
- If you ever need someone to watch Mr. Slithers while you’re out of town, Henrietta jumps on the opportunity
- She sends you pictures of outfits or hats that she’s made for the python, most of the time while the clothes are on the snake
- Henrietta has definitely thought about getting one for herself, but when she has you, she knows that all she has to do is ask to babysit Mr. Slithers
- She jokes about having joint custody of the snake, but you aren’t even sure if that’s a joke anymore
- She’s turned all of her attention of your pet, how mean of her 🥲
Hi im back again with another animal submission (i did my gecko last time). You made a post about snakes so here's my boy Nikka ( ͡°ᴥ ͡° ʋ)
He's a Western Hognose, so while he is venomous, he's not medically significant to humans (hes incredibly significant to me tho). He bit me once (10000% my own fault, he thought I was food cuz he smelled fur on me from petting my dog) and my hand swelled up for like 3 weeks but then i was good. Hes a sassy lil baby and I love him!!!
__________
OHHHHHHH HOGNOSES ARE SOOOO CUTE. Ever since i started posting on ball python forms i get hognose recommendations. I love hoggies they're so cute if I ever get another snake in the very distant future I wanna have a hoggie someday!
What are the main differences between Mexican and Western hognose snakes? I know Mexican hogs are tinier (saw some babies at the reptile store abd was in awe at their size), but that's it
They are extremely similar, Mexican hoggies (Heterodon nasicus kennerlyi) are currently considered a subspecies of the western hognose.
Mexican hoggies tend to have a more variable spotting pattern than pure westerns, and at a glance you might notice their side spotting is a bit darker in some individuals. Other than that, the differences are quite subtle and not something you'd notice unless you know exactly what to look for; they have a different scale pattern on their faces than Westerns but that's probably just down to adaptation for different habitats.
Also, H. n. kennerlyi and H. nasicus are very similar in size, baby hognoses just look like that in general. Absolutely miniscule babies.
