Chrissy doesn't know what she’s doing.
She really doesn't know what she’s doing.
She puts the car in park and tries to calm her nerves.
It’s going to be fine. She’ll knock on the door and Eddie will sell her sleeping pills and she’ll finally, finally be able to sleep through the night. She has nothing to worry about.
She gets out of her car and walks up to the door of Eddie’s trailer, looking around before she knocks on the door.
The door swings open after a minute and Eddie looks at her for a beat like he’s not sure what he’s actually seeing is true.
“Chrissy Cunningham. Do my eyes deceive me?” Eddie has a smirk on his face and Chrissy gulps.
“Your—no, it’s me,” she says awkwardly, bringing her hand up to wave at him.
She hasn't really seen Eddie since graduation—in the sticky, late May heat—when he flipped the principal the bird and ran off the stage with his diploma in hand, the same smirk on his face that he’s wearing now.
She thought he was probably going to be one of the people who left town immediately after graduating because he didn't seem to like it here, didn't seem to have any reason to stick around now that he’s graduated.
She thought he’d be peeling out of town in his van before the sun even went down the day of their graduation.
So she was surprised when she saw him the other day—just catching a glimpse of him from behind as he was leaving Melvald’s.
And she’s been hemming and hawing for days now about driving up to Lover’s Lake and trying to find Reefer Rick because she can't talk to her parents about how she’s not sleeping and she’s not with Jason anymore and he wouldn't have been able to help her even if she was.
She finally decided to come here when she realized that she doesn't even have her friends to talk to about any of this either.
It’s not that they all abandoned her when she and Jason broke up, but her friends are all dating his friends and he was always around and Chrissy hated how sad he always looked at her whenever they all hung out.
So she drifted further and further away from them as the school year came to a close. Even with the anxiety about college, she thinks it’ll be good to get a fresh start, away from Jason, away from most of her friends who don't really feel like her friends anymore.
Maybe after some time, some distance, she could talk to her friends again, but she can't even remember the last time any of them reached out to her, so it would feel weird reaching out about this now.
And because of all that, it felt a little bit like fate, seeing Eddie, still very much in town. She formulated this plan to get sleeping pills or something from him because he’s the only one she knows that might be able to help her besides Rick, and she’d much rather take her chances with Eddie than with Rick.
“What can I do you for?” Eddie asks when she doesn't say anything else. He tucks his hands into his pockets, leaning forward into her space.
“Can I come in?” she asks, nervously picking at her fingernail.
“Uh, sure,” Eddie says, not sounding sure at all, but he opens the door wider and steps out of the way, gesturing her inside with a sweep of his hand.
She steps past him and tries to remember to breathe. It’s fine, everything is fine.
