it all started six months ago.

you’d been in a random game of DarkRP, more bored than you’d been in your life. most of the kids were like seven, and it was starting to get to the point where it was impossibly redundant.

that was, until an oddly familiar voice rang through your ears.

“hey jack!”

you paused, adjusting your headseat to make sure you weren’t hearing wrong. but seconds later, another familiar voice came through.

“hey wife haver.”

this voice stumbled over the last two words with laughter, and recognition rang through your head.

holy fuck. that was tommyinnit. and jack manifold.

“hey pidgeon,” tommy went, and you heard pidegon respond to him. then, his icon swiveled towards yours, and you swallowed a lump in your throat.

“hello...pisser!” he hesitated to read your name before barking out a sharp laugh. somehow, you found yourself reaching for the unmute button and saying as calmly as you could muster,

“hello wife haver.”

“a girl!” tommy’s voice lit up with interest, and you could hear jacks laughter in the background.

“indeed! a wife you seem to not have,” you laughed a bit, giddy with adrenaline, and your high spiked when tommy’s laugh rang out in your ears again, along with jack’s. your favorite streamer’s were laughing at what you said.

“i’m afraid so. well, woman, would you like to help me shoot people?” his voice was amused, and you found yourself running your character over to his.

“i’d love to be a menace with you.” jacks protest’s fell on deaf ears as you and tommy ran down the streets in the game, just shooting random people. it was only twenty seconds into the round, and you found both of you immediately transported to await an admin.

“well played pisser, well played,” tommy said with approval, and you leaned forward in your chair with a smile. “why thank you tommy.”

“ah, so you know who i am?” his voice was cocky as always, and you found yourself rolling your eyes instinctively. “of course i do dumbass,” you mumbled, and there was his laugh again. “the lady has fight! much appreciated in a crime partner.”

before long, the admin was showing up, and thankfully, it was one you knew from playing this game aggressively. tanisha was reluctant to let you both go, but after some reasoning on your end and sweet talking on tommy’s you were back in the game. you could hear him slap the desk in celebration when he congratulated you on cheating the system, and it made your heart swell to have your favorite cc be so happy to play with you.

you rejoined the round, only to have tommy quickly RDM a guy, and tanisha popped back up, this time without forgiveness. both of you were immediately transported to jail, and you later learned that jack spent this time mugging and stabbing people in an attempt to jail himself with the two of you. after laughing with tommy over the most random of things, you checked the time on your phone.

“fuck, i have to go in like ten.” you said into the mic, regret seeping into your voice. this had been the highlight of your year, not just because it was them, but because they’d made you laugh harder than anyone had before, both irl and through the screen.

“me and jack just ended recording a bit ago actually. listen uh, you seem like a pretty cool woman. do you, i mean, do you have discord?” tommy seemed hesitant, and it was odd seeing the loudmouth so cautious. then his words sank in, and you sprang to speak.

“yes!” you rattled off your tag quickly.

“cool! lemme just leave the game and make sure it works, okay?”

seconds later, someone was pinging your discord, and as you switched tabs, you took a moment to stare at the sight on screen you thought you’d never see. tommyinnit was calling you.

“it’s working!” you called quickly when you snapped back to reality, and he hummed approval.

“alright, well we’ll let you go. i’ll add you to a chat with jack.”

“okay, sounds great. this was so fun, i’ll uh...i’ll talk to you guys later!” both of the boys yelled goodbyes after your words, and you left the game and sat back in your chair.

now, you, jack and tommy were inseparable siblings. every time they met up, they facetimed you for practically the whole thing, and you had plans to meet them in two months. all the fans had loved you, and since then you’d been in three mod videos on tommy’s channel, featured in a vlog on jacks, and a few more miscellaneous videos. you’d even started a streaming channel of your own, and while you weren’t as popular as the boys, you had a good 450k on twitch under your belt.

it was on one facetime, late at night, after a few minutes of silence, that you thought back to how you became friends with such famous dorks.

komorebi by tomorrowsrain ─ okay, i know you said preferably no ships (we’re already off to a rocky start FDJFKSJ) but this is literally my favorite team 7 fic ever, it’s impossible for me not to include it. it’s kakaobi, and team 7 doesn’t come in until ch. 3 of the first part, but i highly HIGHLY recommend it. seriously, this is my absolute favorite characterization of the members of team 7 & their dynamic, the author does such a good job of building their relationship from teammates to family. i will say the first chapter is a little disorienting (it’s in first person POV, which i usually tend to avoid when it comes to fanfiction, but the author does it so well and it does shift straight back to third person POV for the rest of the chapters). the author is currently writing the chuunin exams arc and it’s literally everything i wanted. 

tides by edenfalling ─ omg, this was one of the first team 7 fics i ever read waaay back on ff.net when i was like, 12 years old. unlike most of the fics on this list, this is set in shippuden, but it’s very much AU/canon-divergent. good character dynamics with team 7 learning how to work together again<3

how to make a team by Pleasedial123 ─ basically, kakashi gets his head out of his ass and actually invests time into strengthening the bonds between the members of team 7. don’t get me wrong, i absolutely LOVE canon!kakashi & i know he did his best (he was traumatized + not ready to be a teacher, i get it)... plus, if he was a good teacher in canon, there literally wouldn’t have been a plot. basically this is me saying fuck kishimoto because LOOK at what we could’ve had!! 

and so, the sensei supports his students by ihopethelightwillshineupon ─ this is really more kakashi-centric and it focuses more on his relationship with each of his students than on the dynamic between naruto, sasuke, and sakura (but kakashi is technically part of team 7 so it still counts!!)

ONE-SHOTS

for warmth by magnificentbirb ─ a scene i wish we would’ve gotten in canon.... like you’re telling me there are literally HOURS of filler episodes and we couldn’t get ONE soft, genin team 7 moment?? kishimoto & studio pierrot, you’ll be hearing from my lawyers. 

believing in heroes by guycecil ─ another moment i wish we got in canon because like... can we talk about how, in their genin days, these kids are 12 years old. are you fucking kidding me. also, now that i’m skimming over the fic, this may be more sakura-centric than team 7 centric, but i’d still highly recommend!

the pretty one by theformerone ─ it’s tagged as ot3, but i promise there are no ships! like maaaybe if you squint? but i honestly read it as platonic. one of my favorite fics ever tbh. answers the question that i’ve been thinking about since the manga was released all those years ago: what could have happened if kakashi was too late?

take the fight from the kid by theformerone ─ someone tell me why these 12 year old kids aren’t allowed to process anything on screen.... like, right after the wave arc, everything just went back to normal. like okay, yes, naruto had that moment to grieve for zabuza + haku, but i really just wanted to see a shift in the team 7 dynamics and we never really got it. so take this beautifully written fic instead!! god bless fanfiction. 

pray my name by Chancy_Lurking ─ ok so this is a fic that i found today and i’m OBSESSED. i do want to warn you, since you asked for no ships: it’s not tagged as ot3, but it could be if you squint. or, you could argue that team 7 is just very affectionate/very codependent. either way, right after i finished reading it, all i wanted to do was curl up in my bed and cry (but like, in a good way). 

just killing time by edenfalling ─ a very short but cute little one-shot that i also just found today! same author as tides, so if you read that first and you like their work, you should check this one out! (or vice versa)

did you inherit a sickness? did you blame god? by hotgirl ─ i literally recommend this fic to anyone and everyone because like?? it doesn’t exactly match what you’re looking for but it does have team 7 moments (heads up: it’s implied sns). this is honestly one of the best sasuke characterizations i’ve ever read. 10/10 would recommend.

of bruised brains and dog baths by sweetpotatopie ─ okay so these last three fics might not be exactly what you’re looking for but i’m adding them if/when you’re in the mood for cute, feel-good team 7 one-shots. this one is just a happy, post-canon piece where they actually get along<3

another day in paradise by ohthelinsanity ─ modern au where sakura and naruto bully sasuke, sakura and sasuke bully naruto, and kakashi is weird as shit. the friendship between naruto/sasuke/sakura that i wish i got in canon. hints of past itasaku and implied inosaku, but it’s very much a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment.

gotta see! finally know! kakashi-sensei’s true face! by Lolistar92 ─ my FAVORITE face reveal fic EVER. episode 101 from naruto is the only filler that deserves rights (and maybe the curry arc because i love team gai, the ramen episode, and all the episodes with konoha 11. but mostly ep 101.)

Nah, there’s lotsa people who don’t expect anything from him, Deku’s friends love him a lot~ but yeah his interactions with Kiri are fun, most times it’s just Kiri getting excited and being overly energetic as usual and Deku going “ye-yeah!” with his uncertain face, it’s??? fun??? Seeing the members of the bakusquad interact on friendly terms with the dekusquad is always fun for me exactly for that, Deku’s friends are all so mild compared to Baku’s, you notice the squad’s energy even more like this haha

Surprise, bitch

So, the process of tracking AO3 output has gotten a lot more time-consuming since the fandom expanded (the amount of new fics per month has tripled!) and I haven’t made a new post in a couple of months, but I’m still here. I may be crying over some of these weird-ass ship combinations y’all come up with, but I will survive.

Here’s where we stand as of the end of January:

If you’re reading this and going “WAIT, THAT DOESN’T MATCH WHAT AO3 SAYS!” then ding ding ding, you are correct.

Why doesn’t it match? 

Some authors will tag their fic with both the romantic and the platonic tags for a pairing, but the “relationships” list on AO3 just counts the raw number of fics that use a given tag, so it isn’t smart enough to realize it’s counting a lot of the same fics twice. I do not do that, because I have a human brain and I can read your tags and go, “yeah, this is clearly a romantic fic” and ignore the fact that you also double-tagged it as friendship, or whatever.

Unlike the mindless tag-counting algorithm, I actually check not only fic summaries but also whole chapters if there is more than one pairing tagged. Hint: if you tag a pairing and they haven’t shown up once within three chapters, they don’t count. Please stop inflating your hit counts by tagging characters and pairings that aren’t vital parts of your stories, omfg.

Some people tag their non-romantic pairings as romantic or vice versa by mistake. (Fun fact: gay romance fic was/is known as SLASH, hence a tag with a SLASH has been used to denote romantic pairings since at least the 1970s.)

Tl;dr -- when you account for the sheer number of “side pairings” and remove them from the results, this is how the final totals shake out.

Biggest changes:

Three new pairings have joined the Top 10 since the start of S2: Kara/Lena, Alex/Maggie, and Kara/Mon-El

Every previously-popular Alex/dude ship has flatlined out of respect for her canon storyline

Kara/James has been bumped off the Top 10, but may potentially bounce back to knock Alex/J’onn off the list in a couple of months

...if Winn/Mon-El doesn’t get there first

Dearest Karamel fans: are you still puzzled by the general lack of enthusiasm for your ship? Look no further.

See that giant purple chunk? That’s the femslash -- it’s over 80% of all the fic we create. The three biggest femslash ships alone account for two thirds of all the Supergirl fic on AO3. The majority of people are here for the ladies only. Not only that, ship-free fic is the next biggest chunk at 10% -- so we’re also here for the Danvers sisters! As in, just them. Alone. Doing non-romantic things.

That little green sliver that says 7.4 percent? That’s you. Not only that, you’re sharing it with every other male/female ship in the fandom ... all seventeen of them.

Reminder to all that it is a rarity, even within fan spaces, to find fandoms that are femslash-dominant. These are important refuge spaces for queer women, so it’d be pretty great if everyone could FUCKING CHILL with the childish bickering and name-calling re: Mon-El and realize that yelling about him being perfect boyfriend material or whatever is not going to go over well in a heavily ladygay space full of people who are used to being told that what they care about is invalid or wrong. (That said, people who do like him are entitled to tactfully express that opinion without being attacked by Tumblr’s equivalent of the pitchfork-wielding mob from Shrek .)

And lest you think that The Gay was a sudden trend because of Alex’s storyline, allow me to provide you with the following:

So, there’s a reason I normally only post subsections of this graph ... and it’s because on the aggregated graph Supercat is so overwhelming that you can’t see the trends for most other ships. (That blue line flying off into the great beyond would be Supercat. The two big red-orange spikes in S2 are Alex/Maggie and Kara/Lena, and the green line that remains stubbornly high across the whole run of the show is genfic.)

Annnnnnnd, since I got criticized the last time I made one of these posts for apparently not focusing on the ladies enough, I have created this handy-dandy infographic detailing the number of romantic fics on AO3 featuring every single female character on the show who has been a series regular or recurring guest in Season 1 and/or Season 2.

Stare at it. Stare at it really hard. Then tell me if you notice anything ... odd.

Spoiler alert: if you made it this far and somehow didn’t notice that there’s a clear correlation between the color of each bubble and how often each woman appears in fanfic as a romantic partner, you are part of the problem.
