we are about an hour into rare disease day in my timezone! (it's always the last day of february, whether that's the 28th or the 29th.) the true prevalence of mast cell disorders is unknown, as they are often misdiagnosed or ignored. and mast cell activation syndrome, the most prevalent kind of mast cell disorder, only had diagnostic criteria laid out for the first time in 2010. so whether or not it's truly rare is really up in the air!
(personally I suspect it is just aggressively underdiagnosed but I'm not a research scientist or diagnostician right now. and even if it is rare, it's gonna be a lot less so than it was 5 years ago as certain respiratory infections are known to trigger it into visibility. that's what happened to me when I got mono at the end of 2015, further compounded when I got covid in 2022.)
all chronically ill people face a lot of hurdles when it comes to seeking diagnosis, accommodation, and treatment (all of which can be severely complicated by any intersecting marginalities), but rare diseases present a special challenge.
for example, I have an immune disorder. my immune system does not like being alive, my mast cells are way too jumpy and throw a tantrum over every little thing. you'd think an immunologist would be the one to treat me, right?
I've had 6 immunology referrals rejected in the past 9 months alone. multiple major immunology clinics in my major city tied to a major research university outright refuse to see patients with "mcas" written anywhere in their chart.
after 8 years of being debilitatingly ill, and suspecting it was immune mediated for 6, and getting it confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt by the bone marrow biopsy last month, I will have my second ever appointment with an immunologist. another 2 1/2 months from now. the first immunologist lied to me about the reliability of the one available blood test, when I first came up with the hypothesis by myself 6 years ago, and forced me to abandon my (correct!!! now proven!!!) hypothesis for 3 entire years while we wandered around lost and got nowhere other than even more thorough process of elimination.
okay, well if my immune system is attacking me, maybe it's technically autoimmune? that's the rheumatologists instead of the immunologists, what do they have to say? dick all my dude, I don't have rheumatoid arthritis so they just shrug at me and go "idk, fibro? I don't know why you're here" and send me home with nothing. (I literally had a rheumatologist say to me, verbatim, "I don't know why you're here." buddy it's your job to read the chart and decide if I get seen or not, you tell me. at least he had a snazzy outfit.)
being chronically ill can be a terrible struggle no matter what, but a disease that is perceived as rare, accurate or not, adds a whole new layer of bullshit. (and of course there are much much rarer diseases out there, with even more hoops and dead ends and struggles and all-new layers of bullshit that even I don't have to deal with!)
anyway I'm having a shit time and using this awareness day as an excuse to productively bitch about it 👍

sorry to ask but what clip studio brushes do you use?
i BARELY use csp for lineart and sketching so these are basically just. suggestions.
i prefer using sai for line art bc i like the feel better but tbh just use whatever line art/sketching brush you think fits your style.
SSA_E brush, potato lineart pen, 線画用ペン, custom is uhh literally just mashed up shit
let's use this unfinished wip for testing the brushes i actually use. sure.
(i think i sketched this w my custom brush....idk this wip has been in my files for months)
おにぎりブラシ, 本でやる怠けものブラシ, 哈捏上色 (pick any hard brush you're comfy with tbh)
something i forgot to mention, i sometimes blend out the edges
basics of soft and hard edges in art yk, use any blending tool you have
i rendered with the rice ball brush i linked earlier (this one), drew shitty clouds for the bg, added a random ass gradient map and then finished it!!! ta da!!!!!!
for rendering, i basically use the hardest sharpest brush i have at hand and just clean up anything i find messy. that's it. that's how i render.
it's so easy! that's why i really like rendering
this....ended up turning into a tutorial on how i paint in general but it's not like i could've avoided it because i needed to use the brushes shown after all
i hate those fuckin. posts where artists give their brushes out but not show how to use them, leaving them essentially useless so there u go! i hope it helps

A snake offering up a Perfectly Fresh apple from the tree of knowledge.
I intended for this to be done the same day as the Patton art as 4/13 is anniversary of the in universe wedding and it would be appropriate, but stuff happened so its finished today. Also there was like, so much more to the sketch that I cropped out because it just wasn’t working </3

sooooo just a lil confession
i haven't watched jimmy's smp streams and it's honestly because of that one newlife stream where scott teleports jimmy where jimmy gets stuck and dies
now i maybe just projecting onto jimmy but i really do think he got really panicked that he became unable to think clearly at the time and wasn't able to pull out his shovel (which was in his hotbar) to dig out
i also think that at the time, his body (in this case, his fingers/hand on the mouse) was moving faster than he could think which may be also why he trued to use his pickaxe instead of his shovel
and i genuinely could feel his disappointment right after his unsuccessful attempt at digging himself out
i got upset when, after he got revived/respawned, scott and the others (i can't remember if it was just scott but i'll put the others there as well) (also i refuse to watch that stream again) immediately went on about why he didn't get himself out and why he left himself die (although scott apologized then, i still felt like they were entirely blaming jimmy only here)
then i got even more upset when i saw the chat filled with "YOU HAD A SHOVEL IN YOUR HOTBAR!!!" and "why did you use a pickaxe lol" and the vod's comment section also had comments like that and comments basically saying "it's literally jimmy's fault lol" and "it's your fault jim, you had a shovel in your hotbar" (so again, blaming jimmy here)
uhhhh again, i maybe projecting only but yeah, i refuse to watch another smp livestream after that incident (i've also been kind of on and off when it comes to watching the streams during esmp2 because of the toy jokes and all that) (i think this newlife stream may have been the last straw for me??? idk)

hi river, quick question, do u use hq mod?
no i don't! but i do use gshade, softerhaze's milk thistle world lighting overhaul, northern siberia winds' in-game lighting, simp's graphics overhaul (the ultimate quality one, and i've made some personal changes too i think), and i think i also use amoebae's shadows for days. sometimes i upscale photos with srwe. my graphics settings in the game are also set as high as they can be.
gshade does a lot to make my game look better tho... like here are some before and after pics:
