#whitewashing in movies

I NEVER want to see people say "but they COULDN'T cast an Actor of Color for a Character of Color because they couldn't find an actor to play the part!" As a defense for TV shows/Movies whitewashing a character ever again.
If a casting director could find a damn near carbon copy of an actor to portray said actor in his younger years, then a casting director can find anyone. I didn't even know this actor existed before the gay vampire show. This proves that if studios really wanted, they would.
Tumblr media
So anybody in this day and age still defending whitewashing under the excuse of "studios not finding anybody" is stupid and dumb. Do you think big studios like Disney don't know when they're whitewashing characters of color? Do you really think they're just smol little beans trying to make fun movies by erasing characters of Romani, or etc (insert whomever they whitewashed here) heritage?
It's a casting director's JOB to match the actor to the character. If they aren't doing it properly, then they're a bad casting director. If studios executives are choosing to whitewash characters then know it's either on purpose or they don't think it's important enough to cast to character, and at that point I no longer give a fuck about whatever show/movie they are making.
Seriously it's embarrassing to watch you people defend whitewashing, it makes you look stupid.
(Note: I have nothing against the actors from Interview with the Vampire, I'm just using them as an example that there's so many actors out there and studios should always find the right person for the job.)

There are many things to be said about the new Minecraft movie trailer. None of them are good

Now that everyone on here is talking about the minecraft movie I'm going to throw in my two cents. I think that the minecraft movie should be about a dad who knows nothing about minecraft and his gamer child getting isekai'd into minecraft by, like, a wizard or a curse or something. Freaky Friday style. They have to work together and defeat the ender dragon to get out. The dad doesn't really understand the child or their hobbies, and every time he tries to get into minecraft on his own (on the kid's computer) he doesn't really like it or get it. But by throwing them into a minecraft world and forcing them to play in a sandbox, they both realize that it's really fun to play video games (like minecraft) with the people they love. Also this wouldn't work if it took place with hardcore world rules. It could be animated and both of them could have steve's character model but the kid has a propeller hat on theirs.

Ive seen tons of posts talking about "le whitewash minecraft movie" as if steve isnt a white guy with a tan at best. Considering the facts of "notch is racist" and "the original creators were all white people from a white country" and the first version of minecraft had "steve" and "black steve" sprites (granted neithee look like steve nowadays but the fact they specify that one steve as specifically black should say a lot)

The lackluster romance and overemphasised 'love triangle' in The Hunger Games movies makes more sense when you frame it as Peeta's hijacked memories after the war.
Katniss being super cold towards him? The terrible cave scene? The emotionless 'I need you' on the beach? The general lack of chemistry between them? All the Gale angst?? Peeta's entire character being reduced to a damsel in distress and very much feeling like a spare part??? The totally weird and unsatisfying epilogue where the distance between them in the field is emphasised and something about the lighting and framing makes it feel like a Bad Ending????
boom hijacking it's all in his head

as much as I love JackBlack(I really do, hes a great actor,) i dont think he was the right guy to play Steve from Minecraft. Steve is very clearly a POC. That isn't my main issue with the movie either, i feel like everything about it is just off. The blue portal, the jumanji feel of the trailer, that.. sheep.. i think it being live action is a bad choice but idk. To each their own.
ALSO WHERES ALEX- pleaase let alex be in this movie bruh..
overall, i just think this whole movie will be actually terrible, but hopefully they pull an ugly sonic or something..

Rant because I'm mad
first off, that crafting recipe. Just Why.
Secondly, why did they make this isekai. The sandbox game, with thousands of different ways to play, so many iconic stories created from this game and you made this Jumanji but blocks
Third the excuse that "the minecraft movie is for kids!" And that people are taking this too seriously, maybe we are, but if someone spat in the face of a beloved game for yet another cash grab i think being mad is the least of warner bros worries.
I grew up with minecraft, I watched Minecraft rps and let's plays. I still play minecraft. This seems like a generic fantasy story where the protagonists fight bad guys and go home, maybe thats what fighting the ender dragon is but minecraft isn't just fight the dragon and boom you're done.
Just going off from the trailer, this feels nothing like minecraft. Minecraft, at least to me, is very lonely and slow. Immortal surrounded by a very mortal world, with the ancient ruins signifying something great has died here, each day passing by and making this world your own block by block.
idk but warner bros could've made a beloved movie about love and living and everything else i love about this game but can't put it into words and they just didn't. I'm honestly more sad they missed such a big opportunity.
Side rant but i cant be the only one sad about the people making movies for a quick buck, right? This movie had ten years and billions of dollars that'll probably be wasted and live on as yet another cash grab. Do companies not realise appealing to children and not the fans of the game not stab them in the back? Those children will grow up forgetting about this movie and the fans (who would have come to this movie in droves) would also forget this and go on to watch actual good minecraft content. Is the very small in comparison money worth the potential to create a movie that'll remembered fondly for decades to come? I want to stare warner bros in the face and ask if it was worth it.
TLDR: how did they make a game about creativity so utterly soulless.
