There is a nebulous jordie lives au which lives entirely in my head in which jordie recovers from the plague while Kaz is still sick. He gets up to find them food and water only to return and discover Kaz is nowhere to be found. Still recovering from the fever, he searches the barrel for days before he finally sees Kaz wandering down the staves in a sort of fugue state, soaked to the bone with a haunted look in his eyes.

Kaz won’t tell him what happened, but jordie knows it’s bad because his baby brother flinches every time he touches him, and soon enough he’s started wearing gloves, even in the height of summer.

Soon, they discover kazs gift for cards, and it keeps them fed and clothed, if not much else. Kaz is angry at jordie for losing the money, refuses to let him make any decisions. Jordie is beholden to his angry traumatized little brother because he can’t deny that he failed them the first time around.

Kaz is offered a place in his pick of the gangs, but the only one willing to take both him and his tag along older brother is the dregs. Jordie dies a little bit inside when they join up, when they take the tattoo side by side, but he’s not sure they’ll survive another winter on the streets.

And the plot of SoC generally goes on from there. Jordie tags along on the ice court, he and Jesper test kazs patience at every turn, he’s constantly offering unsolicited annoying older brother advice about Inej.

This lends itself to a really interesting exploration of Kaz and jordies relationship, what holds brothers together in the face of incredible trauma, the skewed power dynamic of Kaz becoming the breadwinner for them both at the age of nine, etc etc. But mostly, this au is a vessel for the sailing of the ultimate crack ship, which is of course, jordie/alys Van Eck.

Something that’s always missing whenever people talk about Lyanna and the Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy is that these things should always circle back to Jon Snow. He’s our main character here. Rhaegar and Lyanna, as well as the Kingsguard, are all dead. They were dead before this story began. This tiny section of text is meant to give color to Jon — who is alive, and whose story is currently unfolding. The events at the Tower of Joy, told entirely through Ned’s fever dream for a reason, essentially serve as one thing: fantasy protagonist myth building 101. Three wise men, a legendary magical sword, some of the greatest knights of an era, a dying queen lady, the end of an age, a dead prince, a dead king, and then here comes a soon to be completely orphaned prince whose life hangs on the balance and whose survival depends on the compassion of one lord and his wizard friend. GRRM is literally retelling King Arthur’s backstory through Jon. This whole thing is one giant literary allusion to Uther and Igraine and the boy king Arthur, to Lancelot and his Joyous Guard, to Guinevere, and to tragic romances. It reads as an ode to Arthurian fantasy and is meant to backdrop the main protagonist’s fantastical origins. The Kingsguard are there to play into that. Their presence at the Tower, in that moment, was never about Lyanna; not solely, anyway. Their presence is tied to Rhaegar’s last surviving male child, and the language used suggests that they had chosen their king, for better or worse. Any discussion surrounding the Kingsguard’s presence at the Tower that focuses on anyone but Jon completely misses the point imo.

The King's Favorite

The only possession that Catherine left Jason was an ice rose. She commented that it was some kind of family charm, that it had been with them for many generations and brought luck and that she knew the rose would save him one day. The last image Jason had of his mother was her smile as she handed him the rose.

Jason was always curious about the rose, it was cold and he swore it was made of solid ice but that should be impossible since it didn't melt. He was never brave enough to tell Bruce about it; maybe it was dumb, but he didn't want his paranoid father to take away the last memory of his mother.

The day Jason died he mocked the rose, neatly nestled in his bag a few meters away. Luck? Not at all. Saving? What a joke. While he closed his eyes he regretted everything he did wrong, everything he didn't get to live. As his tears fell to the warehouse floor, the rose slipped out of his bag, as if it went through it.

Unbeknownst to Jason, the ice rose ended up near his foot and began to fuse with his skin, leaving a small blue tattoo on his ankle, and for some reason, in his last few minutes, Jason felt warm.

A month after being buried, the tattoo began to glow blue. At midnight a voice was heard in the empty Gotham Cemetery.

"Wake up, my little Rose"

Jason's eyes snapped open in confusion as he woke up in his coffin. The Ghost King smirked as he looked at his chosen one while sitting on his throne of ice in the Infinite Realms, a new heir, huh?

I feel that during the first coffee date walk through the market, rye has a fraction of a millisecond's kneejerk trauma freakout of '...wait. wait. am I really catching feelings for a rich boy again. with how that went down last time. am I truly that stupid' (once derogatorily referred to quite openly at a party as 'young master anaxas' pet mortalitasi' to which the young master anaxas only grinned and shrugged and STILL you don't break up with his smug controlling ass for good for six more months because you have a desperate bottomless yearning pit where your self respect should go, twice shy lol). and then he actually looks at lucanis standing next to him getting harding spearmint to help with bad dreams and generally being so quietly thoughtful and sweet through the prosaic yet necessary medium of grocery shopping it makes me feel a little unwell to truly contemplate. and rye is like '*the softest fondest eyes anyone has ever turned on anything* ...you know what. I suspect we don't have to worry about that repeating, I think we're probably safe. I am comfortable being this level of stupid. (slowly dawning marital intent even at this stage)'.

(part of the reason rye buys NONE of illario's bullshit at all right from the beginning is that he's basically vaccinated against this exact type of dude after that relationship lol. charming suave guy who in the beginning pays you a lot of lavish attention and takes pains to make you feel special every time you're in a room with him -- but shallowly and mostly, it slowly dawns on you, when there's something he wants from you (and he's often doing it at the expense of someone else, raising you up to put someone else down and you won't believe this... it can turn into a seesaw at a whim. yay). and beneath that there's just a seething pit of resentment and inferiority complexes and bitterness left to fester until he can make it everyone else's problem and that IS going to start to bubble up between the cracks with you too if you stick around for long enough. no thank you been there done that wasted my youth and potential on it and all I got was this lousy shiny set of new emotional intimacy issues haunting me for life! trust me illario I HAVE, as it were, chosen the wrong dellamorte before, which is exactly how I know I didn't this time. go get him lucanis I've got your coffee

hilarious mental image: rye and illario sitting quietly together while everyone else is busy milling about during a cursed dellamorte family dinner (the vibes are so bad. you know the vibes are bad. sitting as still as you can and hoping for calm skies is your best bet without lucanis or teia favourite child privileges to work with) and rye out of the blue gazing thoughtfully into nothing over the edge of his glass with half-lidded eyes to go 'you know. you remind me a lot of my ex. not in a good way' and illario with absolutely no shame and hilariously also something that's the closest he ever gets to real sympathy going 'yeah, I get that a lot'. best talk those two ever had, unironically. their bond leveled up to its final form that day. *soulsborne boss defeated text* MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING REACHED)

hot d s2 is like star wars the last jedi in that there are plenty of valid complaints to make but that valid crit is way overshadowed by nutbar fans making offensive or just downright dumb complaints. difference is the sw original canon trilogy (and even the force awakens) is better media than fire and blood ever was, which makes that whole line of complaint even more annoying imo. i can't like one legit post about the absence of nettles without seeing 10 other complaints i want nothing to do with.

Been a bit quiet (aside from story posts that I occasionally draft) but I've been archiving a lot of old stuff including my OG Fletcher legacy to have easy access to it in the docs (and maybe get some inspiration/thoughts for the characters who are still relevant in my verse by seeing how their original development went) and damn one of my main takeaways was that I absolutely slept on Kyle and Lyra as a couple. Now that I have a special soft spot for couples that are best friends first I see their beauty and I love them both separately and together😭

They had both snuck away to spend the evening together. In a brief moment of peace in their previous few weeks of never-ending turmoil, they finally had one evening they could enjoy together. And Elijah wanted to show her something new. He could tell Astrea had a preference for sweet treats. This nation might grow cocoa, but he had never seen hot cocoa sold in the city markets. Coastal towns outside the nation purchased shipments of the delight to use as they wished, but Oraceans never added foreign sugars to sweeten the drink into a delicacy. 

From the look on her face when he brought her some in a canteen, she seemed to love it even more than he could have dreamed. Despite her nose red from the chill, her cheeks flushed with the warmth of her drink. And as she shivered in her scarves, he fought the urge to pull her closer. 

Astrea wanted to show him the meteor shower tonight. Apparently, she had read in books that Pyria did not have clear enough skies to see the stars like one could in Oracea, so she invited him to watch it with her. He would have to show her the truth one day. 

Together, they sat on a moss-covered rock where the capital met the lake, where her land met his seas. Gazing at the stars, he wondered how he found himself here. He had once promised himself he would never get involved with… a royal. And yet, here he was, pleased at the sight of her smile, filled with awe as she stared at the meteor shower. 

“Princess,” he whispered weakly, inching closer to her. 

He simply couldn’t help himself around her, so he reached for her hand in the darkness. Her smile at the stars grew as her fingers entwined with his. And his heartbeat through his chest at the feel of her fingers in his. Despite never having touched before, their fingers melded together as if they had always known how to fit together. 

“Pirate,” she smiled coyly, affectionately glancing at him before returning her gaze to the stars. Just the sound of her voice brought an embarrassing flush to his cheeks. 

When had he started caring for her like this? When had he lost track of himself? When she infiltrated the Monastery on her own, he was consumed with worry; he could barely focus on his own task. But it wasn’t just the worry for her safety— it was feeling safe himself. She had saved him from danger just as many times as he had saved her. When did his feet only begin to feel steady on the ground when she was around? It was hard to explain, but they simply… fit together. She complimented him. And he could only hope she felt the same. 

Looking at her, he knew he wanted more— more than helpless smiles when the world wasn’t watching. He wanted to help her fulfill her dreams— to help her prove to her nation that she was innocent of the crime of killing the Queen. To prove to them that she did not kill her mother. And prove to the nation who truly committed the crime. 

Did she want this, too? He needed to know. Gods, he needed to know. 

He caressed her fingers in thought. A glow spread through him as she mimicked his gesture. 

Stay with me, he wanted to ask. But he frowned. He couldn’t just ask her to leave her home to travel with him— to stay with him. He couldn’t just ask her to make sacrifices for him. But what could he offer her?

“Princess,” he repeated, pulling her hands toward him to get her attention. “Can I show you what your other nation looks like? After all this is over, I can take you to Pyria so you can see it for yourself.” He knew she had only ever seen the nation in books. Her knowledge of her other home was based on rumours or stories told by villagers, mixed with her father's stories. He could sense a part of her longed to leave; it was evident in the wonder in her eyes every time she travelled outside the city with him and whenever she stepped foot on his ship. Catching the look of awe in her eyes now, he boldly slid his free hand to her chin, unable to contain himself any longer. He brushed his thumb across her lips and continued, “If you don’t like it, we’ll bring you right back.”

After a moment of hesitation, she narrowed her eyes at him. “You can see the stars just fine in Pyria, can’t you?”

“That and more,” he said, cupping her cheek. “Nothing could compare to seeing Pyria with your own eyes. None of those books can truly show you.” He tucked a stray hair behind her ear, running his finger over the scar on her ear that this nation branded her with. “There are rivers of lava, and if you use your magic, you can swim in them. It’s one of the most beautiful things you can see, and only people with our magic can see it.”

“Hmm,” she smiled under his touch, forming a grin in his palm that sent a shiver up his spine. He wasn’t sure if she believed him— her books wouldn’t have mentioned one of their closest guarded secrets. But it didn’t matter, not yet. She whispered into his palm as she spoke, nearly kissing his skin, “Would I get more of that… hot cocoa?”

His gaze softened. “I will steal shipments of that cocoa at every port we visit if you so wish it, Princess.”

She grinned again. He was aware she was starting to play with him as he usually did with her. But he didn’t mind at all. In fact, he loved discovering this side of her, too. He didn’t think he could ever tire of uncovering new aspects of her. With her free hand, she started to trace the hem of his shirt. 

It was as if the world was frozen around them. With her touch on him, he thought perhaps she wanted this as much as he did. He allowed her to explore him, letting her go at her own pace. He sat patiently as her gaze flitted between his features as she touched him— tracing the hem of his tunic and then brushing her fingers along the stubble of his chin. He thought, if the Gods stopped time, he could live in this moment forever, with her soft lingering gaze on him and his palm on her cheek, fingers brushing over the stars erupting on her face.

“You know,” he said, leaning closer, “I do have more to offer than just chocolate.”

“Oh,” she grinned, “I can imagine you do, Pirate,” she laughed, emphasizing the nefariousness of his title. Still, her gaze lingered on his, Pyrian red meeting Pyrian red. 

Just her gaze reminded him of everything he adored about her— everything she embodied. She represented what Pyria could have been before the Usurper. She was love, gentleness, and mercy mixed with a reasonable vengeance. She was what Pyria could have been if hatred had not risen in its place. 

She leaned closer, raising her lips to his, but paused. “Tell me something. If you’ve seen the stars like this before,” she asked, her eyes flickering between his eyes and lips, “then why did you let me convince you to come tonight?”

“Can’t you tell, Princess?”

“I want you to tell me,” she replied, softly combing her fingers through his long hair. “Show me.” Kiss me. 

So, he did. He leaned down to her, held her hands close to his chest, and kissed her— slowly, gently, as if asking for permission. And as her fingers tugged at his hair and pulled him down to her, he allowed himself to fall deeper. And it was in this moment he realized if he had to wake one more morning with her beside him, then it was not worth waking. 

And, despite knowing that he once would have berated himself for falling for a Princess, he sat in this moment, fingers roaming her in turn, he knew he did not regret a single moment of it.

Bad news: That joke post about including Reset + Orchid is definitely not canon. (I legit got sad thinking about Reset being in a universe where Orchid isn't- because their stories are so so intertwined- but Nightmare 100% would NOT risk the whole twins exploding Error's soul thing.)

Good news: This means I COULD include Kane (Reset's older brother who usually dies in timelines where Reset is born) and use it to develope his character a bit more! Also! Perhaps a Blue × Dream kiddo is finally in the stars for me to design?

okay minor rant but it seriously grinds my gears the way that dani was written off/out of the original new mutants run. like i don’t think I’d be this pissed about it if anyone bothered to actually write about what she was doing in asgard instead shunting her to the side in favour of the x-force characters and then bringing her back to Earth as a double-agent working for the MLF, saying that she “fell from asgard” but also refusing to explain how????

also, dani goes and suddenly is working for SHIELD but literally no one explains how the hell that happened??
