a character who doesn't know they're about to pass out becaue they've never done it before. rather than saying "I feel faint" or something, they say "I feel a little weird." they only sit because another character points out that they look pale and tells them to sit or lie down.

The whumpee was the whumper’s prized possession, one that was constantly caged and on display in their home. The whumpee hated the constant attention, but they knew lashing out at the whumper’s guest would only end up with them tortured, so they could only close their eyes and endure the stares.

Brain Fog

personally i LOVE this trope sm seeing as how I live with it on a daily basis.

love when a character's brain fog interferes with their ability to do certain plot-critical things, thus causing a major setback in the good guys' plans that the character then gets blamed for not preventing.

medic character who is still getting over a bad illness, swaying woozily when no one is watching, forgetting to stitch up their own wound or someone else's. forgetting HOW to stitch up a wound, even.

concussed hero character who knows that villain monologued the conditions of their surrender to them, but forgetting what exactly those terms were when someone asks them to repeat what villain said.

detective whumpee or lawyer whumpee who just knows they have all the pieces they need in order to put together a solid case against the perp, but whose brain is just not cooperating with them as they review the case files for hours on end, chugging coffee and losing hours of sleep and too proud to call up their partner at 3:30am and admit that they need help.

brain fog that makes an otherwise responsible whumpee forget important events and assignments. makes them late to birthday celebrations or time-sensitive things like picking up young kids from school or activities. now not only have they got their guilt to deal with, but they've also got a tiny person very angry with them too.

brain fog that subtly slides into the realization that things are just not right in their mind or in their body. things that might or might not be solved with a good night's rest. things that they need to solve in order to go on with their lives and not fuck up everyone else's in the process.

i love every iteration of this trope, I just eat it right up and it says nothing about me

whumper forcing whumpee awake by putting them in dangerous situations so their only choices are wake up or be irreparably injured

A dull, pounding fear drums through me, clouding every thought. I lie still, not wanting to hear the chains clinking, and I stare up at the stone ceiling until light slowly trickles in through the tiny window.

when a powerful figure is reduced to kneeling. when the lord is forced to bow. when the exile stumbles into an unwelcoming bar. when the “beast” is chained by their horns. when a god is dragged behind their enemy’s chariot, a captive and trophy. when the loyal “guard dog” character is muzzled and the silver-tongued thief falls silent in horror.

that’s the shit

it’s about the contrapasso. the reversal of roles and the sudden, plunging terror of being unable to hide.

When the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger and the mask slips, it's great.

But when the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger, and the mask DOESN'T slip.

Because they understand they need to be calm and unflappable now more than ever; if it protects them, it will certainly protect the person they care about. So their voice doesn't waver, their hands don't shake. They don't panic. From the outside looking in, they're as calm as could be. They handle it.

But after it's over-when the person they care about is safe, and the unflappable character is alone-they completely shatter. Gasping breaths, sobs, barely holding it together because someone they love almost DIED, and it was far, far too close for comfort.

(Optional: Character that they care about finds them in this state and comforts them.)

Whumpee couldn't save caretaker. Whumpee wasn't even there when caretaker was killed. The news stopped them cold. In a way, it stopped their heart.

Now all whumpee can do is lay in a pile of clothes that still smell like caretaker--for now-- and cry and cry.

The whumpee lied to themselves, telling themselves every night that rescue would come any day now, that they would be okay, and maybe that the whumper would realize the error of their ways. They couldn’t keep up their life forever though, and they begin to lose hope as every day passes without signs of things getting better.
