whump thingy i love
when whumper puts their hand out and whumpee reluctantly spits out whatever was in their mouth (key, pin, etc. if they were trying to escape) or just in a carewhumper/handler way
this could be silent or with a “spit it out.” “drop it.” if you like your pet/living weapon whump
also that with something that was a gag like undoing or wrapping the outer layer of a gag and then just making whumpee spit out the cloth or whatever was the part in their mouth
it’s just enough humiliating and intimate but also takes a level of trust in the whumpee and they are being treated like a child or pet
could be a good way to show a defiant whumpee sometimes being obedient, they know what’s expected of them and they have to pick and choose what to resist
i just find it a little detail that says so much about the relationship between the whumper and whumpee
feel free to add to this too
(also this was in part inspired by @victimeyez professional victim story that i am currently OBSESSED with, particularly inspired by the Caius and Tommy dynamic. i don’t think this specifically happens with Caius and Tommy in any of the chapters but there are definitely similar moments and god I LOVE)

Dislocated joints are actually very fun whump concepts. Think about it:
First you have the initial injury. Be it a dislocated shoulder, hip, knee, all potential locations are dehibilitating, losing the use of that arm or being unable to walk, etc.
Also that every time the whumpee tries to move the dislocated limb they risk making it worse and intensify the pain.
Then... then you have treatment. Forcing a dislocated joint back into place is NOT FUN. Not for the whumpee, not for the caretaker. And if someone inexperienced tries and messes it up... oh boy oh boy we making it worse!
And of course you have all the issues that might come about after the joint is fixed, such as strained muscles, sprained ligaments and tendons, nerve damage, vascular (blood vessel) issues, stiff joints/osteoarthritis... the list goes on.
Anyway thinking about this bc someone I know irl dislocated both their knees on separate occasions, (and it took like four medical professionals to put it back in place). Also I remembered a scene in Mom's Night Out (2014) where Sam dislocates his shoulder and instead of letting a medical professional set it he slammed. His shoulder. Into a wall. And shoved it back in place. In the storming emergency room. In front of the receptionist. I cringe every time.

I've been telling friends about one of my favorite shows, Magnificent Seven, from late 90's, which was also probably my first foray into fandom. I don't even know why I or even how I found fanfic back in 1998 - but I did, and I have loved them ever since. But it's not just the show that I love, it is the fandom. Maybe because it was almost all older women, or maybe people were just nicer back then - there were no ship wars. None. Not even a thing. 99% of the fandom is genfic A++++ Found Family, but the ones who did ship characters together Shipped and Let Ship. Nobody bothered anybody. And there were like 7 or 8 widespread AU's that everyone agreed on - there was the OG Old West where the show was set, but then there was the WILDLY popular (to the point I thought THAT was the actual premise for the show, and 10 year old me was very shocked to find it was a western) ATF AU where the characters were federal agents. There was Lil Britches, which had several of the characters are children and the rest are adults, there's Star Trek and Star Wars, and them as private detectives, WWII soldiers, etc. The lists are endless. And none of them are bad.
And almost every single one of them is whumpy as fuck.
So I'm going to recommend my favorites:
The South Wind Series by Beth aka Midge
Replaced by Heather F
Pied Piper by Kelly A
Rough Beginnings by Shawna
The Devil's Bargain by Sue Necessary
Aftermath by BMP
Black and White by Violette
Abandoned by Jean
Ezra, In Between by MAC
Tuesday's Child: Lessons of Grace by Joy K
Run Like Hell by Beth aka Midge
Don't Know From Adam by Jordan Mckenzie
Bearing the Pain by Angela B (crossover with Big Valley)
All Things Considered by Nilah H
I could list pretty much every one I've ever read - I don't actually know that I read an M7 fic I didn't care for. However, almost all of these listed authors have more than one fic (some have a LOT more). So if you like them, more are easier to find. I haven't actually looked to see what's available on Ao3 or even ffn.net - because neither site existed when the fandom was in its heyday and everyone had their own web page for posting.

Recommendations.. PLEASE!?
Long story short- I have a hefty goal of reading 100 books this year! Everytime I read fanfiction lately I can't help but feel guilty because it's not a "real book" that I can count towards my goal (although I have definitely read fanfictions better than actual published work...that's a different conversation)
So! That brings me to: does anyone have any good whumpy book recs??? I don't care genre ect, I'm super open to anything! I am just missing enjoying whump and google is no help 😭

If I could just shamelessly plug the podcast of a friend of mine: Black Teeth by the Transmissions
It's so full of whump! So delicious!
All the main cast are women so do keep that in mind if you don't like/really like lady whump
There's burns, stabbings, magic, blunt force trauma, emotional trauma, etc and it's so well done! Lots of cool voice actors as well

Day 7 || Favorite Whump Fic
I have so many favorite whump fics, it's hard. So I will just pick one of those.
@just-horrible-things Just Acting.
A story about (amateur?) spies, assassins and a conspiracy, told mostly from the perspective of someone, who is very observant, yet can't make a lot of sense about it.
Smith is an intriguing and engrossing pov, Gil is so weird, Liv is the love of my life (and also weird), and this every character other character, too, feel so real and interesting. In the current act, there's a new (undeniably hot) character, who I can't wait to learn everything about.
Everyone in that story is just acting, we just don't know how much. This story is a rollercoaster, funny and brutal and elegant at the some time, and I adore it.

whats something youve watched/read recently that had a nice whumpy moment in it?
Hmmmmm... Besides the obvious answer of fanfiction, I would have to say the My Happy Marriage anime on Netflix! (It's also a manga!! And a live-action movie!)
It's very much like a Cinderella story, but with the twist of arranged marriage and paranormal themes. Set in 19th-century Meiji Restoration era Japan. Miyo Saimori, the female lead, grew up in an abusive and neglectful household. In spite of being the eldest daughter and being of Noble status, she's treated as lesser than a servant in her own home. Her father arranges for her to be married off to a commander in the military, Kiyoka Kudo, who is widely rumored to be cruel and has not kept a fiancée for more than three days. Miyo learns that she's not a magnet for hatred, and Kiyoka gradually learns that he can bring happiness to others.
This anime is probably my favorite because it has soft, comfy vibes, yet still manages to have some nice whump material too!
Spoilers ahead!
If you don't mind spoilers, read on!
Some notable whump moments:
Miyo's general demeanor - she's timid and meek and fearful of nearly every person she meets. Even after getting to know them, she's still reserved and uncertain.
Repetitive, instinctive, fearful apologies galore.
There's legit a whole kidnapping arc. Yes, seriously.
There's "light" torture during this. I don't really care for torture sequences, but it was written well enough that I didn't feel the ick. (also, kudos to Kaya's voice actress for the infuriated scream. If you watch it, you'll know what I mean)
Bedside vigils, my beloved
Recovery after the kidnapping and torture (too brief for my taste, but still appreciated)
Sleep deprivation
Fainting~
A bullet grazes Kiyoka's arm in a duel for custody of Miyo. Yes, a literal duel.
Kiyoka falls into a coma from an accident during battle.
Also just an overall feel of recovery. For the first time, Miyo's getting to experience so many soft, gentle, warm, happy things that she should have already been familiar with.

you’ve prob done this but umbrella academy whump/angst recs?? all ur others are so good!
Sorry about the delay! So I am a huge Five fan, so most of them are slanted that way, though I think Diego sneaks in there a few times -but also they're almost all Family Fics.
I'm going to leave off the NSFW/non-con ones I know of, just in case. If you are interested, feel free to send another anon ask (or message if you would prefer) and I'll send links.
i'm walking backward into my own myth by eluvion  Five is in 1963. He’s in 2019. He’s in 2002. Time is falling apart, and Five is in every piece. Five is a disease, and time is coughing up a lung.
Or; Five Hargreeves breaks time.
I kept running (for a soft place to fall) by chromaticality He'd hoped they had given up. Really, he should have known better. The Handler thinks he's the solution to all her problems. Five thinks he'd like to turn the whole place into a slaughterhouse. But with Allison and Luther caught in the crossfire, Five has to cooperate with the Commission's plans until he can figure out a way to get everyone home.
No Time, No Time, Dear Brother O’ Mine by I_Logophile
At Gimbel Brothers department store, Five’s injury is a bit more serious than a simple bullet graze. Not that it matters to him.
That is, until the police show up while he’s trying to leave, and Five finds himself remembering things he’d rather forget. -- There’s something going on with his brother. That much is very clear to Diego.
Why else is Five at a crime scene? Why else is he attacking the people trying to help him? Why else is he going around ranting about time?
There’s something going on with his brother. And Diego is going to find out what.
He just has to get Five some medical attention first.
the walls kept tumbling down by Ingu It started small.
There was a nagging ache in his chest, phantom pain from where the bullets had pierced his flesh, in the overwritten timeline that never will be.
(the one where rewinding time doesn't miraculously resolve mortal gunshot wounds)
Here, Beneath My Lungs by beastboy12
After they get back from the 60's, Five starts investigating a string of suspicious murders while distancing himself from a family he's convinced he's already lost. So, naturally, Klaus and Diego join him. "Holy shit, Five," Diego says, rushing forward. "What the hell happened to you?" Five is off-balanced by the sight of Diego. Shouldn’t he be at the other address? What is he doing here? Klaus appears on the other side of Diego and lets out a laugh that sounds almost frantic. "Oh, thank God you can see him, too.” “Why are you here?” Five says. Diego scoffs. “Yeah, no, the one covered in blood doesn’t get to ask questions.”
Series
Part 1 of Five is an emotionally stunted yogurt lid
The Longest Roads Lead to Home by assaily (twistedskys) Five raised his glass to the rafters. “I’m home,” he said simply. “I’d like to take the time to enjoy that, y’know.”
Diego watched him pour another drink, suddenly understanding him. He’d been gone a long time, lost in a really terrible place that probably never felt like home unless he could somehow forget he was the last soul on Earth. ‘Home’ meant a lot to him.
When Five’s glass was ready again, Diego raised his own, still half-full. “To being home,” he said.
That earned him a smile, a real one that managed to soothe the crease in Five’s brow and make him look so incredibly young in its sincerity, and so incredibly old in its deep gratitude. He raised his glass and clinked it against Diego’s. “To finally being home.”
~-~
Or; Five gets kidnapped and it goes wrong (for the kidnapper).
heart heart head by morimaru
a series of hurt/comfort snippets featuring Five.
Blink by Lady_Origami When Five blinks, sometimes he's back in the world of ash and embers. It's hard to remember how to breathe when that happens. In which Klaus tries to play the role of supportive brother with Ben's help, and Five struggles more than he lets on.
Can you hug me as I go? by maddienole What if the FBI captured Five instead of Vanya?
2x7 canon divergence.
Simple by sharkneto Diego runs into Five at the park. He’s just here to catch a mugger. Why does Five always complicate things?
Lend a Hand by sharkneto If Luther’s being honest, he’s not sure how they’re going to get out of this one. Effectively trapped and powers negated, the Umbrella Academy is in a dire position.
Luther really needs to stop underestimating the lengths Five is willing to go to save his family.
Howling at the Moon by assaily (twistedskys) Five is now a permanent resident of the Hotel Oblivion. The rooms are crap, service is even worse, and he's pretty sure his family left him here. But at least they're safe, right?
A pre-season 3 AU of season 3, Hotel-as-a-prison concept from the comics.
lie awake, sleep awake by morimaru Number Five does not get sick. He refuses to be sick. His body obeys. Right up until it doesn't. (- this one is literally my favorite of all of these rec's, I have lost count how many times I've read it)
and all the kids cried out by morimaru The one where Five is sick, the Handler is clingy and hard to get rid of even after death, and Klaus has a ghost-busting side-gig that is a lot less exciting than it sounds.
Guilt Trip by I_Logophile In typical Five Hargreeves fashion, a drug ring bust with his family turns into a rescue mission, which turns into a complete and utter shitshow. Because, of course, things had to go sideways— No, scratch that. Things didn't just go sideways, things went upside down, backward, and inside out. And then got blown up. Literally.
In the aftermath of the whole fiasco, Five is left reeling, floundering, drowning in guilt.
Because how could he have done that?
How could he have attacked his family?
spoiled by morimaru Number Five is a survivor. He fought his whole life: he fought their father, the apocalypse, the commission, then – the apocalypse, again. Having made that fateful jump back to 2019, he unwillingly left his old body with all of its scars behind. Physical ones, at least. It’s funny, in a way, that the hardest thing for him to fight ends up being food.
The Dangers of Vigilanteing by aceofwhump Diego gets injured during one of his vigilante acts and is forced to go back to the one place he swore he'd never return: The Umbrella Academy
Also, the best way I've found to get to the fics I want in this fandom is to troll through favorites of the authors of my favorite fics. Most fandoms that doesn't seem to work, but this one it does. Happy reading, and again - sorry about the delay!

Whumpmas in July 2024 - Day 5 - Share a TV show, movie, or any media that gives you the whumperflies!
Tumblr media
This post is part of my participation in the 2024 @whumpmasinjuly event!
-----
A piece of media that gives me the whumperflies!:
It's funny, every time I get asked about something specific like this, I forget every piece of media that I've ever watched. The one that comes to mind though is one that was integral to my whump fandom awakening:
Voltron: Legendary Defender (Netflix)
I had been curious about this show for several years because one of my best friends was super into it a few years ago. However, I never took the time to sit down and watch it... until I got into the whump community and saw how much was in it.
If you've hung around my whump blog long enough, you can see that Keith is my blorbo and that I love love love to see him whumped. His baseline character is hot and angsty, and there is so much good fanart and fanfics of him in situations.
The show itself delivers a lot with hard hits, emotional turmoil, tough battles, an on-screen scarring, and so much more. It's a fun ride for whumpers! Is the story perfect? Absolutely not, but I love it for the fun, the adventure, the friendship, and of course the whump all the same. Plus, again, so many delicious whump fics and fanart to look at!
Tumblr media
I would do some crazy things for this sad boy.
If you want a completely different kind of show/whump, I also am completely obsessed with:
Succession (HBO)
This show is grounded in reality, so you won't find anything too extreme or crazy here. If you want emotional whump though, holy cow. This show is SO GOOD. Almost all of the characters are awful (that's a compliment), no one is a good person, the stakes are high, and I was delightfully miserable the entire time I was watching it (again, another compliment).
The writing is phenomenal and keeps you on the edge of your seat, the acting is tight, the emotions are deep and strong, and watching the characters try to escape the cycle of abuse and neglect they lived through, only to become the ones who perpetuate it is so tragic and captivating. You see their self destruction and want so badly for them to get out of it, but there's nothing that you can do. It hurts.
There's a big thing that happens in the final season that just GUTS me every time, but even the little moments can be so tense and meaningful. It's brilliant. Again, I can't speak highly enough of the show, the actors, the writing, everything. If you want emotional whump, you've got it, baby!
... but it's also a super funny show with a lot of humor in it as well, so there's that! It's really needed to balance out the other parts. Genuinely, some of the funniest stuff I've seen in years. It's not all tragedy!
Tumblr media
They look happy here, but trust me, that's rare for them.
Tumblr media
Cousin Greg, my precious, precious string bean of a man whom I love and want to protect with my whole heart. (I literally started watching this show because of Nicholas Braun, and I don't regret it at all. Greg is the best character!)

beloved show/movie rec (whumpy or otherwise)
Limitless (2015) is one of my favorite and most re-watched shows! Which isn't that much of an accomplishment as it's only a single season haha, but it is SO good. Good humor, a touch of angst, occasional whump (but with lots of potential for so much more), and I love pretty much all of the characters! Plus the dynamic between Brian and Rebecca is PHENOMENAL. There are a lot of shows from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s that have a similar thing going (eccentric, goofy, lovable man with unusual skills paired with a female law enforcement officer that has to keep him in line) but this is by far my favorite. They let Rebecca be a bit goofy as well, and she's just great! And their relationship is entirely platonic! :D Plus they took one of the movie's biggest weaknesses (having a protagonist that is kind of unlikable) and turn it into a strength (putting him into a more antagonistic role) and fixed a weird plot hole. Anyway, I adore it and am so so sad it only lasted a season, and that the fandom is pretty small. It's super underrated. Everyone should go watch it!

Stumbled on the series Altered Carbon a few days ago. I'm only five episodes in, but so far so good. The concept is exceptionally whumpy, but the execution is fairly standard for mainstream TV (handwaved injuries, trauma not really acknowledged). It's also a cyberpunk setting that goes heavy on world building, so naturally I love that.
(mini review with some spoilers beneath the cut)
Pros:
- Whumpy premise. Rebel/mercenary is taken out of prison by a rich guy who wants to hire him (and who almost verbatim claims him as his property)
- Interesting world, colorful and visually fun
- The concept of resleeving (transferring a person's consciousness into a new body) is used for both comedy and horror and it's great
- Episode 4 is like 30% torture chamber
- The way they illustrate "body death" as cheap makes a lot of sense to me for the the setting
- There's an AI hologram character and I love him
Cons:
- Has the gratuitous violence, nudity, and gore that's become typical for "adult" sci-fi. I don't mind it, (and I love the fight scenes) but half the time it seems like it's just for shock value
- excessive amount of sex scenes. Also makes half the female characters sex workers, and has a few instances of 'violence against women as a plot device'. The extent doesn't seem necessary aside from the "gritty" vibes these shows feel like they need to be taken seriously
- most of the romance feels forced
- oh and the male lead is literally drugged and sexually assaulted, but afterwards it's almost played like it was consensual??
- yeah yeah it's typical for sci-fi protagonists to be super tough and unflinching and it's part of the character but holy cow the lead has minimalist reactions to pain
