we don't give sonic unleashed enough credit for its representation. so i just wanna appreciate the shamar residents' designs.

so many other companies would go "a region inspired by the middle east?? hmm, we'll design the characters based off aladdin and do no other research on the culture whatsoever". but sega didn't do this. the shamar residents actually look like people you'd come across in the middle east. there's no stereotyping. the women aren't portrayed as belly dancers nor are they sexualized. its a very respectful portrayal of a middle eastern inspired region.

and this game came out in 2008!! not naming names but i've seen games that came out as recently as two or three years ago still resort to orientalism. if sega, a japanese company, can have a respectful representation of a middle eastern inspired region in 2008, then there is no reason why the company behind your favourite game just can't do research on the culture instead of being orientalist.
