I just saw what you said about loralie (lorelie?) and I totally agree! finally someone feels the same way I do and doesn't worship her!

like, I'm sorry, but she wasn't a good mom. she was a fun person to grow up with for rori, but I can't think of a single situation where she was acting like a parent where it wasn't fuelled by some self-centered motive.

she didn't like the mirror jess held up to her face when he called her out, so she was being protective over rori and didn't want her to date him.

she refused to ask her parents for help to send her kid to a good school, that she could very much afford if she just got her head out of her ass and tried to have some sort of relationship with her parents.

honestly, her whole 'I also had a difficult upbringing so don't try and tell me what's it like' attitude is disgusting. you didn't have a difficult upbringing, you were a child who made mistakes and got mad when your parents forced you to face the consequences of your actions. and yes, sometimes their approach to things wasn't okay, but she didn't even give them a chance once she was an adult to make things right. she decided they were evil manipulative people who wanted to control her every move, when basing these opinions on the way she saw her parents as a child, so no matter what Emily and Richard did they did it bc they hated her, apparently. and not just parents who were trying their best to help their daughter and grandchild and have them in their lives, no matter how wrong they sometimes are. they were just tying their best.

the whole Dean thing was super weird as well. like basically forcing them into a date, then staying with them for said date, getting mad at rori when she and Dean had sex for the first time and she didn't come running to tell her. at some point I think she was suddenly against their relationship if I remember correctly, and then suddenly she was trying to force them together again bc she didn't like jess.

also the way she reacted when rori decided to travel europe, or to put school on hold for a semester bc she wasn't doing well. or whenever rori didn't come running to her to tell her something. she always reacted like a child who got told they can't have a 3rd piece of cake, and not like an adult. let alone a mother.

God, this turned into this whole anti lorelie rant, which I did not expect to happen. but I just have so many thoughts on lorelie and you're the first person I saw who actually agreed with the basis of why I don't like her

im gonna preface this by saying that i do like lorelai, i don't hate her.

no because i agree with you! my main issue is i feel like she missed out on childhood and was making up for it by living vicariously through rory, and because of this, whenever rory did something lorelai didn't want her to, they had a fight. also, anytime rory made a mistake, it would be blown out-of-proportion and she would have earn forgiveness. being fun is amazing and i do think she is a very competent human being in general but she is also just so immature (and im not talking about when she's being cute, i mean immature with rory).

like right now im on s6, and they are not talking because rory's dropped out. to me, that makes so much sense because that girl is Burnt Out, but nope lorelai wants her to be perfect and live the dream and have everything. you can't force someone to have something if they don't want it! she doesn't even tell her about her engagement, and takes everything everyone is doing around her in bad faith.

i will say i do think richard and emily are controlling and i get why she holds a grudge against them, but if she wants to cut contact then cut it fully. you can't have it both ways - help me whenever my daughter and i are in a bind but im still not going to forgive you and i will shit-talk you. she also is so uncomfortable with being from a rich family, and i think being self-aware about money is extremely important, but the way she approaches the whole thing and acts as if she has renounced the wealth fully makes me mad. like no you have a huge safety net and always will. you are rich and generational wealth is real.

*deep breath* So basically there's this thing in the current Taylor Swift tour where people exchange friendship bracelets and Travis Kelce who plays American football on the Kansas Chiefs knew that Taylor had recently become single so he made a friendship bracelet with his number but didn't manage to give it to her which he said publicly on a podcast I think with his brother? His brother by the way plays on the Philadelphia Eagles which is Taylor's team and also coincidentally mine anyway so she hears about this because it goes viral and they go on a few dates and they seem utterly adorable and he went to a recent show in the south American leg of the tour where she changed a lyric to be about him, so it went "karma is the guy on the chiefs coming straight home to me" which again: fucking adorable I'm obsessed. I think the reason people call him himbo is mostly cause he's beefy he doesn't seem particularly dumb to me but he does seem kind so you know, plus vis a vis king he really respects Taylor's needs and he's a fan of her music so that's a bonus for us fans and generally I'm rooting for this one!

As for the squirrels? I had to ask a group of swiftie friends about this cause I hadn't seen anything and luckily @whyshedisappeared knew off the bat (wrong sports metaphor I know)

her whole thing where she like essentially forces Rory to earn her affection back is absolutely awful and completely immature. you can't refuse to talk to your kid bc they are trying to figure out what's best for them, then refuse to tell them information about your life (which is why you're mad in the first place) and act like you have the moral high ground here.

I do think a lot of her immaturity comes from living a very sheltered childhood and then not having the opportunity to grow up and adult before getting pregnant and having a child, she was very stunted and she is somewhat stuck in the mentality of a 16 year old, which I can't blame her for, but it's also her responsibility to put in the work and become the adult that she is.

about Richard and Emily, I do agree that they're very controlling, but I do think that some of it comes from just the circles they run in, and not having the opportunity to grow and learn to parents as their child grows up. they do mean well, at the end of the day, they want to do what's best for lorelai and Rory, even though it isn't always what they need or what's best. and I do think that a lot of the mistakes they made could have been prevented had lorelai just talked to them. like, speaking from experience, my parents tried to force me into uni (like, give my number to university academics counselling, almost enroll me into school force me) for 4 years, but as soon as I started talking to my mom and sharing why I don't think this is right for me she backed off and helped me figure out what's right for me. lorelai isn't talking to her parents about what she's struggling with and doesn't come to them when she could use their help, Rory does, so they force themselves into the situation and try to control them and ignore what lorelai actually needs.

which leads me to something else I don't like about lorelai, she basically held Rory over their heads and dangled a relationship with her like a prize if, and only if, she could use their money when she needs it and completely ignore them and toss them out when she doesn't feel like she needs them. which forced Rory to be the adult (at like 14, mind you) and come to them for financial help (multiple times) only for lorelai to completely blow up on them and act like she's some patron Saint and the only one whose right and like they have to earn her forgiveness and affection when they did nothing wrong (Rory asking for help they clearly needed, emily and Richard for giving them that help)

yes i absolutely see what you're tryna say. idk how people think lorelai is always in the right or whatever. richard and emily try so hard to do their best, but still i can't, in good faith, say that they are good parents. butttt if we're looking at their bad qualities, we also have to take the good into account. i do believe that good does not make the bad okay, but its also very unreal to expect humans to not make mistakes. this is why even though i think lorelai is not the best parent, i see the good and balance how i feel about her.

the thing you said about rory having to mature at 14, absolutely agree! this is about me - since i was 13, idk why but i've always wanted kids, but i always say to my mom that i won't have them before 30 because i don't want to accidentally be a bad parent (obviously im gonna make mistakes but that's besides point). and this is not to say that people shouldn't have kids before 30, but just that it's much hard to raise kids when you're that young in your 20s and figuring your own life out. and i do feel bad for lorelai in this regard and i do think she was dealt with a bad hand, but as an adult, it's her responsibility to make the best out of things. she can't just use her past as an excuse to make mistakes now and get out of everything so yeah.
