Hi everyone! I figured since I have been playing Sims 2 a lot lately, I'd provide my current essentials! Will update as I try more things, but this is valid as of February 1, 2024! ♥

Semester Changes: College is now 8 days instead of 24! Faster Uni Education: 24-48 Hour semesters! There Can Only Be One Professor: 2 per major seemed much, so I like this one! Generates less NPC's for me :D Doctors Need Degrees: Depending on your sims education/grades, they can either be stuck at career level 1 or 10!

BONUS & EXTRAS The Christian Collection: On a MTS forum post, (look for Liv Lukas's post) but ChristianLov's mods are no longer able to be found separately. This is also linked where I put the Baby Pet Creator! Sims 2 Store Content: I only use the extra cars in my game, but there's loads of new stuff!

This minigame-packed adventure explores many classic LEGO themes.

Running the game

There are two main versions of the game to chose from: the original 2001 release, and an improved 2007 version released as part of a two-pack. There is also apparently an unfinished, unreleased v1.1 with some bug fixes.

Curiously, the version hosted on MyAbandonware seems nearly identical to other 2001 releases I found. There appear to be minimal differences between the two.

All versions use a simple disk check; mounting an ISO with a tool like Daemon Tools suffices. There are also No-CD hex-edits available if you're interested.

Debug menu and Level-select

We can access LI2's debug menu by altering the main menu options. I found some hex-edits for this on RRU. If you're not comfortable with hex-edits you can try using a patcher or patch, or LI2 Mod Manager.

Use the resolution and widescreen hacks offered by LI2 Mod Manager. See this thread for more detail on how it works.

Hiding UI and Player-character

This is possible using Lego Island 2 Game Editor. It's a powerful albeit buggy application for modifying LI2 assets.

If LI2GE doesn't work, for example to edit fonts, you can use Lego Island 2 Extractor and/or Lego Island 2 Explorer. Once installed, be sure to disable automatic updates inside the program's INI to avoid startup crashes.

LI2 will prefer to load files from identically-named folders if they are present in the _data directory. For example, if a Fonts folder exists, its files will be used and Fonts.bob/bod won't be loaded.

We can also pause the game to remove the HUD, screenshot this state, and create a no-HUD overlay for our footage.

Rendering ambience sequences

I recommend using the Fruity LSD effect with FL Studio. First, open the MID file in LEGO Island 2's level files, for example Fishing_Amb.mid. Be sure to select MIDI Out with Fruity LSD in the subsequent dialog.

Afterward, click the folder icon in the top left to specify a DLS file - use one found in your MID file's folder. Once it's loaded, populate each channel by clicking it, and picking the corresponding patch. Don't forget to populate the "percussive" one-shots as well (Channel 10 in the screenshot below).

You are now ready to play your MID with the intended samples attached, or export it to a WAV file.

Appendix: Rendering music sequences

Download DirectMusic Producer. Supposedly this program allows you to export samples and sequence data. You could then render the pair using the MIDI renderer of your choice, such as OpenMPT or FL Studio's Directmusic plugin.

Appendix: Ambience sequence dead-ends

I tried VLC, with the DLS configured under FluidSynth, but this gave no output. I tried Miles Sound Tools with a DLS specified, but again - no output. I tried Winamp but seemingly couldn't get in_midi to use a custom DLS file, despite specifying one in the setting dialogs.

Appendix: Other LI2 developer tools

A soak test can be activated by pressing F8 while in windowed mode. You can also spawn a debugger window by pressing F9.

Felt Spider can weaponize his mechanical spider legs that are on his suit and excels with walking on his webs as if it was a tightrope. He shoots out webs from his legs.

Butadiene Spider equips mechanical spider legs to move around quicker and use as a weapon at the same time. She shoots out webs from her legs.

Ink Spider can shoot out webs from his hands that are covered in ink. He can shoot out an even wider ink web from his tip whenever it's opened.

Isoprene Spider's hands can shoot out webs from his hands that are strong and extremely water-resistant.

Flocculent Spider can shoot out webs from her mouth that are very colorful and vibrant. The spider symbol on her is actually located at the back of her mask and it's the same as Paperboard Spider's symbol except it shows the spider's abdomen shaped like a 4-pointed star as well as it is rainbow-colored.

Paperboard Spider can shoot out webs from his hands that can thicken. Whenever he takes a break, he often gets annoyed by having his fry sticks being eaten by someone, especially by Isoprene Spider and Flocculent Spider.

Widescreen Spider can shoot out webs that glow from his legs that can electrocute on his command. He also specializes with debugging, hacking and machinery manipulation as well.

Movie Review | The Long Kiss Goodnight (Harlin, 1996)

A deeply relatable story about a schoolteacher who dyes her hair blonde and learns to kill again (not necessarily in that order), The Long Kiss Goodnight is novel in some ways for flipping the gender of the protagonist. Not that there haven't been movies about female assassins before this or since, but not quite with this dynamic. The opening scenes present a picture of total ordinariness, painted in the banal treacle of a Christmas card. When the heroine rediscovers her killer instinct (and dyes her hair blonde), there's a degree of wish fulfillment here presented to the viewer, that you too might rediscover your talent for murder and mayhem if presented with the right circumstances. It's a dynamic I've often seen with male action heroes (Total Recall pointedly foregrounds it for satirical aims), but less so with women. There's limited psychological realism with such a role, but I think Geena Davis straddles both sides of her character pretty effectively.

The screenplay is by Shane Black, meaning we get a lot of colourful, fast-paced dialogue which is very enjoyable to listen to, but as with a lot of movies by screenwriters who write enjoyable, fast-paced dialogue, sometimes you hear the screenwriter over the actors delivering the lines. What I'm saying is, no matter how good an actor Brian Cox might be, it's a little jarring to hear him spew Shane Black dialogue. One example involves him explaining how he found Samuel L. Jackson: "There may be many reasons not to kill you, but among them is not that you'll be missed by NASA. I found the address in your coat. Here. Between the address of a topless bar, and the picture of what looks like a man's penis." To which Jackson responds, clarifying: "That's a duck, not a dick." (I do not have a screenshot handy, but my opinion is that Jackson would benefit from art lessons.)

To that end, I think Jackson comes out the best here. While over the last few decades he's been stuck in memefied roles that don't serve his talents and has generally been well used only by Quentin Tarantino, this movie serves as a good example of how well he can take a less glamorous role and totally make it his own. He serves as our connection to normalcy after the heroine evolves, but he's also a flawed, kind of lame, mostly principled and nicely textured character instead what could have been a very generic sidekick role. I am perhaps a bit partial to loser private eyes in '90s studio pictures, having recently found a similar character played by Gary Busey to be the highlight of The Firm. My humble proposal is that you take these two characters and give them a spin-off where they form a detective agency. Never mind what happened to either character in their respective movies.

This is directed by Renny Harlin, who I think is mostly considered a hack, but I think this movie offers a good example of his visual strengths, in that he fills up every frame with snow, smoke, steam and fog, the kinds of things they call particle effects in video games, but lend a nice level of atmosphere to the proceedings. He's also pretty good at staging gunfights, shooting them in appealing widescreen frames, and laying on the squibs to painful effect, which makes this a pretty fun movie to sit through if you like seeing good guys get hurt and bad guys get ripped apart by gunfire. That's the Renny Harlin Touch.
