(Tom Laidman, “Broadway”, 1993 and “Bois Ma Petite”, 1999, Lithograph on paper)
Currently on view at Akron Museum of Art is RETOLD: African American Art and Folklore, a collection of art from the Wesley and Missy Cochran collection, organized into themes exploring aspects of African American history and culture. The show features many well known and lesser known artists including Amiri Baraka, Beverly Buchanan, Willie Cole, Trenton Doyle Hancock, William Pope.L., Tom Laidman, Jacob Lawrence, Alison Saar and more.
From the museum about the exhibition-
African folklore has been around as long as humankind, and the African diaspora in America has added new dimensions to its rich history. African American folk stories teach about culture, the mysteries of life, and the survival of a race of people bought and sold who continue to thrive in an unjust society.
“RETOLD: African American Art and Folklore” focuses on four themes: Remembering, Religion, Racialization, and Resistance. These themes provide a comprehensive retelling of the works featured in the exhibition. In many of the pieces, the artist’s muse connects closely with stories that have been told generation after generation. Folklore texts are featured throughout the space as a means to retell a richer, deeper story of African American culture.
There are more than forty artists represented in this exhibition, all holding one similar truth: their story of joy and struggle in the African American experience.
In addition to the artwork, there is also an educational video produced by Josh Toussaint-Strauss of The Guardian that explores the misconceptions about Haitian Voudou that is worth a watch.

Assembled Sculptures by Artist Willie Cole Cluster High Heels into Expressive Masks:
"Artist Willie Cole juxtaposes readymade footwear and African tradition in his series of sculptural masks. The figurative assemblages stack women’s heels into clusters that are expressive and distinctly unique, an effect Cole derives from the shoes’ material, color, and pattern rather than a preconceived plan or sketch. Depicting exaggerated toothy grins, pointed brows, and outstretched tongues, the sculptures span more than a decade of the artist’s career... Each piece is layered with cultural and societal markers, including those that comment on mass consumerism, fashion trends, and notions of femininity..."

In ‘No Strings,’ Willie Cole Transforms Instruments into Abstract Animals and Figurative Sculptures
Artist Willie Cole is known for transforming discarded materials into sculptures with a tenor of interrogation. Much of his three-dimensional work revolves around found objects like high-heels, plastic bottles, or ironing boards that he turns into pieces of cultural commentary, addressing issues of mass production, historical legacies, and identity.

If Tadao Ando did anything at the Met Gala and the Karl Lagerfeld exhibition—and it is literally debatable if he did anything more than a doodle—he recycled his own concepts, not the artwork of Willie Cole.

March 22, 2022
Brinley was resting on her couch working on a new scarf when she heard a knock on her front door, she set down her scarf and crochet needles heading to the door she opened the door not surprised to see Cole standing there.
Every since Cole had joined the team he has come over and visited her many times and usually gives her some random excuse why he was at her front door but Brinley never bought any of them but she let him think she did.
“Yes Cole?” Brinely questioned wrapping her cardigan tighter around her as she leaned against her front door.
Cole stop there frozen just staring at her in awe, Brinley raised an eyebrow confused, “Cole?”
Cole snapped out of his trance blinking rapidly, “You have curls?” Cole thought she couldn’t have gotten anymore beautiful but he was wrong, her curls make her look even more gorgeous.
Brinely forgot her natural hair was out for once, since she was getting her straightening treatment again tomorrow. She’s gotten her hair professionally straightened for many years now and it lasts around six months for her so she doesn’t have to worry about trying to hid her hair during that time, she usually only has her hair naturally two days a year and that’s before her treatments.
“I do, i know they look terrible.” Brinley shook her head knowing how terrible her curls look on her.
Cole’s jaw drop in shock, “Terrible! Meels they look so beautiful on you.” Cole trailed off just staring at her in awe. Cole being the only person to ever call her Meels after her middle name Amelia.
Brinley eyes widen and she felt her whole body flush, she’s never had someone besides her family said her curls look good on her.
“They do?” Brinley soflty asked, softer than she usually ever lets herself be around anyone.
Cole felt his face soften hearing the uncertainty in her voice and the hopeful spark in her eyes, “They are absolutely beautiful. You look beautiful with your curls.” Cole smiled softly enjoying that he’s able to see a little bit of a softer side of Brinley.
Brinely felt her heart skip a beat and she cursed in her head for Cole snd his stupidly good charm, she shook her head trying not to think about how her cheeks are flushed and her heart skipped in her chest.

Cole felt his heart beat hopefully seeing the red on her cheeks and he smiled seeing her look flustered and softer.
