Hello!! I’m so sorry you’re struggling with inspiration, so let’s hope these all help bring back your mojo!! How about stuck inside after/during a snowstorm with TimBrady?? 💛
heyyy thank you!!
Snowstorm (TimBrady)
Tumblr media
"I can't believe this."
Brady looked up from his phone, eyebrow raising at his boyfriend who stood with his hands on his hips in front of their large bedroom window." Pray tell, what can you not believe now?"
Timmy looked over his shoulder to glare at Brady. "The snow."
Brady laughed. "It's been snowing for the last five hours and now you can't believe it?"
Timmy's look hardened and Brady tried not to smirk.
"It just won't stop." Timmy looked back at the window. "Do you think the game will be cancelled?"
Brady shrugged. "Probably. The roads are shit. There's black ice under everything and the snow isn't letting up. The fact that we were told to stay home and haven't heard anything different should tell us all we need to know."
Timmy muttered something in German under his breath, and Brady wasn't that good at German yet, but he knew a few words. Mainly swear words.
"Go wash your mouth out with soap," Brady said teasingly.
Timmy sighed heavily. "We weren't supposed to get this much. The weather man said less than a foot."
Brady shrugged. He put his phone down and moved to sit on the edge of the bed. "Sometimes they're wrong. Shocking, I know."
Timmy glared at him. "You don't have to be so mean."
Brady laughed and opened his arms to him. "You're right, you're right. Come here."
Timmy shuffled over and stood between Brady's legs. Brady placed his hands onto Timmy's narrow waist and smiled innocently up at him. "I'm sorry the weather isn't being great. But c'mon, we live in Ottawa and it's the middle of winter. At least we're safe at home rather than trying to brave the storm and get to the CTC."
Timmy still frowned. "I guess. But I just got better and my first game back gets cancelled."
Brady gently pulled Timmy down into his lap. He wrapped his arms around Timmy and kissed his forehead softly. "I know. It's disappointing and frustrating. I'm sorry."
Timmy's arms hung limp by his sides, but he hooked his legs around Brady. "Stupid winter," he mumbled.
"I know," Brady said softly. He rubbed Timmy's back. "Think of it this way: you have an extra couple of days to get ready for your return. And when you do come back, you'll be better than ever."
Timmy didn't seem convinced. "I guess."
Brady kissed his pouty lips gently. "What do you want to do?"
"Go to the rink," Timmy mumbled.
Brady snorted. "Other than that. We're stuck inside, babe. What do you want to do inside with me?"
Timmy considered that a moment. A faint smile pulled at his lips. "Have a hot bath and then play some video games?"
"There you go. See? We can have a good day stuck inside."
"As long as we don't lose power," Timmy said.
"We have candles and flashlights," Brady pointed out. "If we lose power, we'll play a board game inside."
"Okay," Timmy drawled, still pouty.
Brady pecked his lips. "Let's go fill the tub, okay?"
"Okay," Timmy repeated and, as the two of them stood, Brady swore he saw a grin on Timmy's lips. It was quickly replaced with a pout when Brady faced him, and it was all Brady could do to not roll his eyes. Instead, he just took Timmy's hand and led him to the bathtub.

Renovating Your Bungalow: Tips and Ideas
Bungalows are celebrated for their charming architecture and practical design, but even these timeless homes can benefit from thoughtful updates and renovations. Whether you're looking to preserve original features or modernize your space, renovating a bungalow can be a rewarding project. Here, we provide tips and ideas to help you transform your bungalow while maintaining its unique character.
Tumblr media
Preserving Original Features
One of the most appealing aspects of bungalows is their historic charm. When renovating, it's essential to preserve original features that add character and value to your home.
Woodwork and Built-Ins
Bungalows often feature beautiful woodwork and built-in furniture. Preserve and restore elements like hardwood floors, trim, molding, and built-in cabinets. Sanding and refinishing wood can bring it back to life, while maintaining its historic charm.
Fireplaces
Fireplaces are a focal point in many bungalows. Restore original mantels and surrounds by cleaning, repairing, and refinishing them. Consider updating the firebox or adding a new insert to improve efficiency while keeping the original aesthetic.
Windows and Doors
Original windows and doors contribute significantly to a bungalow's character. If possible, restore these features rather than replacing them. Repairing frames, adding weatherstripping, and installing storm windows can improve energy efficiency without compromising the home's historic integrity.
For more ideas on maintaining and enhancing your bungalow, read my article on Finding Bungalows with Good Bones in Ottawa.
Modernizing Kitchens and Bathrooms
Updating kitchens and bathrooms can dramatically improve the functionality and appeal of your bungalow. Here are some ideas to consider:
Kitchens
Open Concept: If your bungalow has a closed-off kitchen, consider removing non-load-bearing walls to create an open-concept layout. This change can make the space feel larger and more inviting.
Modern Appliances: Integrate modern, energy-efficient appliances that blend with the kitchen’s style. Stainless steel appliances are a popular choice, but there are also many options in various finishes to match your design.
Custom Cabinetry: While preserving original built-ins is ideal, new custom cabinetry can provide additional storage and functionality. Opt for cabinets that match the bungalow’s style, such as Shaker or Craftsman designs.
Bathrooms
Updated Fixtures: Replacing old fixtures with modern, water-efficient ones can enhance the look and functionality of your bathroom. Consider fixtures that complement the bungalow’s style, such as vintage-inspired faucets and clawfoot tubs.
Tiling and Flooring: Update bathroom tiles and flooring with materials that reflect the home’s character. Classic subway tiles, hexagonal tiles, and mosaic patterns are excellent choices for bungalows.
Improved Lighting: Good lighting is essential in bathrooms. Add layered lighting with a combination of ambient, task, and accent lights to create a bright and inviting space.
For further insights on balancing modern updates with traditional charm, see my article on Reviving Charm: Innovative Renovation Ideas for Timeless Bungalows.
Enhancing Energy Efficiency
Improving your bungalow’s energy efficiency can reduce utility bills and make your home more comfortable. Here are some strategies to consider:
Insulation and Weatherproofing
Adding insulation to walls, attics, and crawl spaces can significantly improve energy efficiency. Seal gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and other openings to prevent drafts and heat loss.
Energy-Efficient Windows
If restoring original windows isn't an option, consider installing energy-efficient replacements that mimic the look of the originals. Double or triple-pane windows with low-E coatings can reduce energy loss while maintaining the home’s aesthetic.
Solar Panels
Installing solar panels can reduce your reliance on traditional energy sources and lower utility costs. Many bungalows have rooflines that are well-suited for solar installations. For more on energy-efficient upgrades, check out my article on Eco-Friendly Abodes: Enhancing Energy Efficiency in Bungalows.
Expanding Living Space
If you need more living space, there are several ways to expand your bungalow without compromising its character:
Attic Conversions
Converting the attic into a usable living space, such as an extra bedroom, office, or playroom, can be an effective way to gain square footage. Ensure proper insulation and ventilation to make the space comfortable year-round.
Basement Finishing
Finishing the basement is another way to add livable space. You can create a family room, home gym, or guest suite. Make sure to address any moisture issues and install appropriate flooring and lighting.
Rear Additions
A well-designed rear addition can provide extra space without altering the bungalow’s street-facing appearance. Consider adding a family room, sunroom, or expanded kitchen. Use materials and architectural details that match the original structure to ensure a seamless integration.
For more on optimizing space in your bungalow, see my article on People Love Bungalows for the Single Level - Let’s Not Forget the Basement.
Landscaping and Outdoor Spaces
Enhancing your bungalow’s outdoor spaces can increase its curb appeal and provide additional areas for relaxation and entertainment:
Front Yard Landscaping
Create a welcoming front yard with a well-maintained lawn, flower beds, and shrubs. Use native plants that thrive in your local climate for a low-maintenance landscape.
Backyard Retreats
Design a backyard retreat with features like a patio, deck, or garden. Add comfortable seating, outdoor lighting, and possibly a water feature to create a relaxing oasis.
Sustainable Practices
Incorporate sustainable landscaping practices, such as rain gardens, composting, and xeriscaping, to reduce water usage and support local ecosystems.
For landscaping ideas specific to bungalows, check out my article on Cultivating Curb Appeal: Landscaping Ideas for Your Ottawa Bungalow.
Conclusion
Renovating a bungalow can be a fulfilling endeavor that enhances both the functionality and charm of your home. By preserving original features, modernizing kitchens and bathrooms, improving energy efficiency, expanding living space, and enhancing outdoor areas, you can create a beautiful and comfortable living environment that suits your needs while respecting the bungalow’s historic character.
Whether you are embarking on a full-scale renovation or making small updates, understanding the unique qualities of bungalow architecture will help you make informed decisions and achieve the best results. Window Repairs Ottawa
Breaking Through: Choosing Between Window Repair And Replacement
Windows plays a significant role in the aesthetics, energy efficiency, and overall comfort of your home. However, there may come a time when you need to decide what to do- window replacement or Window repair Ottawa. Before making a decision, consider the following factors to determine the best course of action:
Window Condition And Damage:
Assess the current condition of your windows. Minor issues can be repaired without the need for replacement.
However, if your windows have significant damage, such as rotting frames, fogging between panes, or broken hardware, replacement may be the more practical solution.
Tumblr media
Energy Efficiency:
Older windows may lack proper insulation, leading to energy loss and increased utility bills. Modern windows come with advanced features such as double or triple-pane glass, low-emissivity coatings, and insulated frames, which can significantly improve energy efficiency.
Consider whether choosing Ottawa window repair to your existing windows will sufficiently address energy concerns or if replacement is necessary for long-term savings.
Cost-Effectiveness:
Compare the costs of Ottawa window repair versus window replacement. While repairs may seem more affordable initially, recurring issues or ongoing energy inefficiency could result in higher long-term costs.
On the other hand, investing in new, energy-efficient windows may provide greater savings over time and enhance the value of your home.
Aesthetics And Design:
Consider the aesthetic impact of your decision. If your current windows are outdated or mismatched with your home's style, a replacement can offer an opportunity to upgrade to more visually appealing options.
Today, there is a wide range of window styles, materials, and finishes available to complement any architectural design or personal preference.
Maintenance Requirements:
Evaluate the maintenance needs of both Window repairs Ottawa and replacement options. While older windows may require frequent repairs and upkeep, modern windows often come with low-maintenance features.
Factor in the time and effort required to maintain your windows when making your decision.
Noise Reduction:
If noise pollution is a concern in your area, consider the noise-reducing properties of different window options. Replacement windows with multiple panes and insulated frames can help block out external noise, providing a quieter and more peaceful indoor environment.
Longevity And Warranty:
Examine the lifespan and warranty coverage of your existing windows versus replacement options.
While repairs may offer a temporary fix, new windows typically come with extended warranties, ensuring peace of mind and protection against future issues.
Environmental Impact:
Consider the environmental implications of your decision. Repairing existing windows reduces waste and minimizes the resources required for manufacturing and installation.
However, replacing old, inefficient windows with eco-friendly alternatives can lead to significant energy savings and reduce your carbon footprint in the long run.
Conclusion:
Choosing between Window repair Ottawa Ontario and replacement requires careful consideration of various factors, including the condition of your windows, energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, aesthetics, maintenance requirements, noise reduction, longevity, and environmental impact.
By weighing these factors and consulting with a reputable window professional, you can make an informed decision that enhances the comfort, efficiency, and value of your home.

Common Gas Appliance Problems and Troubleshooting Tips
Tumblr media
Gas appliances, like any other appliance, can encounter issues over time. Understanding these common problems and having troubleshooting tips at your disposal can save you time and money. Here are some of the most common gas appliance problems and how to troubleshoot them, for more information visit fridge repair Ottawa
1. Burner Not Lighting
If your gas burner is not igniting, it could be due to a few reasons. First, make sure the gas supply valve is fully open. If it is, check if the burner ports are clogged with debris. Use a toothbrush or a small brush to gently clean the ports. If the burner still doesn't light, the igniter might be faulty and need replacement.
2. Strange Smells
Gas appliances should not produce strange smells. If you detect the smell of gas, it could indicate a gas leak. In such cases, it's crucial to act quickly. Turn off the gas supply valve, open windows to ventilate the area, and call a professional to fix the issue. Ignoring a gas leak can be dangerous and potentially lead to an explosion.
3. Uneven Heating
If your oven or stove is heating unevenly, it can result in improperly cooked food. One possible cause is a faulty oven igniter or burner element. These components can wear out over time and need replacement. Another reason could be a malfunctioning thermostat. Check the temperature with an oven thermometer to see if it matches the set temperature. If not, the thermostat may need recalibration or replacement.
By understanding these common problems and following the troubleshooting tips, you can often resolve gas appliance issues on your own. However, it's essential to prioritize safety when dealing with gas appliances.
Gas Appliance Safety Precautions
Gas appliances can pose safety risks if not handled properly. To protect yourself and your home, it's crucial to follow these safety precautions when working with gas appliances:
1. Ventilation
Ensure that the area where the gas appliance is located has proper ventilation. Adequate airflow prevents the build-up of potentially harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide. Keep windows open or install exhaust fans to improve ventilation.
2. Gas Leak Detection
Familiarize yourself with the smell of natural gas—it has a distinct odor similar to rotten eggs. If you detect this smell, it might indicate a gas leak. In such cases, do not use any electrical switches or lighters, as they can cause sparks and ignite the gas. Instead, open windows, evacuate the area, and call a professional immediately.
3. Use of Tools
When working on gas appliances, use the appropriate tools designed for the task. Ensure your tools are in good condition and suitable for gas-related repairs. Using improper tools can lead to accidents or damage to the appliance.
By adhering to these safety precautions, you can minimize the risks associated with gas appliance repair and ensure a safe environment for yourself and your family.
Tools Needed for Gas Appliance Repair
To successfully repair gas appliances, it's essential to have the right tools on hand. Here are some tools that will come in handy during gas appliance repair:
1. Screwdrivers
A set of screwdrivers with various sizes and types of heads is essential for removing screws and accessing different parts of the appliance. Opt for both flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers to cover a wide range of screw types.
2. Wrenches
Wrenches are necessary for loosening or tightening nuts and bolts. Adjustable wrenches are versatile and can accommodate various sizes. Additionally, a pipe wrench may be required for tasks involving gas pipes.
3. Multimeter
A multimeter is a diagnostic tool that measures electrical currents, voltage, and resistance. It helps identify faulty electrical components within the appliance, such as igniters or thermostats. Invest in a reliable multimeter to accurately diagnose electrical issues.
4. Gas Leak Detector
A gas leak detector is a specialized tool that detects the presence of gas leaks. It can help pinpoint leaks in gas pipes or connections, ensuring your safety. Choose a detector that is sensitive and provides accurate readings.
Having these tools readily available will make gas appliance repair more efficient and effective. Remember to use them with caution and refer to user manuals or online resources for specific instructions on their use.
How to Diagnose Gas Appliance Issues
Diagnosing gas appliance issues is the first step towards successful repair. Here's a general process to help you diagnose gas appliance problems:
1. Research and Understanding
Before attempting any repair, research the specific gas appliance model and its common issues. Understanding how the appliance functions and what parts are involved will help you identify potential problems more effectively.
2. Observation and Investigation
Start by observing and investigating the appliance. Look for any visible signs of damage, loose connections, or unusual behavior. Inspect the burner, control knobs, valves, and other components for any obvious issues.
3. Testing and Measuring
If the problem isn't immediately apparent, proceed with testing and measuring. Use a multimeter to check for electrical continuity or resistance in various components. This will help identify faulty parts that may require replacement.
4. Documentation and Comparison
Take notes and document your findings throughout the diagnostic process. Compare your observations and measurements with the appliance's manual or online resources to narrow down the potential causes of the problem.
By following these steps, you can effectively diagnose gas appliance issues and gain a better understanding of what needs to be repaired or replaced.
Step-by-Step Gas Appliance Repair Process
Once you have identified the problem with your gas appliance, it's time to proceed with the repair process. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate through the repair process:
1. Gather the Necessary Materials
Before starting the repair, gather all the required materials, including replacement parts, tools, and safety equipment. Ensure you have everything you need to avoid interruptions during the repair process.
2. Turn Off the Gas Supply
For safety reasons, always turn off the gas supply to the appliance before starting any repair work. Locate the gas shut-off valve and close it tightly. This will prevent gas leaks and potential hazards while you work on the appliance.
3. Disassemble the Appliance
Carefully disassemble the appliance, following the manufacturer's instructions or online guides. Take note of the order in which you remove the components, as you will need to reassemble the appliance later.
4. Replace Faulty Parts
Identify the faulty parts that need replacement based on your diagnostic findings. Follow the appropriate steps to remove the faulty components and install the new ones. Be gentle and avoid forcing any parts to prevent further damage.
5. Reassemble the Appliance
Once the faulty parts have been replaced, reassemble the appliance in the reverse order of disassembly. Ensure all connections are secure and components are properly aligned.
6. Test and Verify
After reassembling the appliance, turn on the gas supply and test the repaired appliance. Check if the issue has been resolved and if the appliance functions as expected. Monitor the appliance for a while to ensure it operates correctly.
Following this step-by-step repair process will help you successfully fix gas appliance issues and restore their functionality. However, not all repairs can be DIY projects. Sometimes, it's necessary to seek professional help.
Expert Advice on Gas Appliance Maintenance
Proper maintenance is key to extending the lifespan of your gas appliances and preventing major issues. Here are some expert tips on maintaining your gas appliances:
1. Regular Cleaning
Regularly clean your gas appliances to remove dirt, grease, and debris that can affect their performance. Wipe down the surfaces, clean burner ports, and unclog any blockages to maintain optimal functionality.
2. Check for Gas Leaks
Periodically inspect gas connections and pipes for any signs of leaks. Apply a mixture of soap and water to connections and observe for bubbles, which indicate a leak. If you suspect a gas leak, take immediate action and call a professional.
3. Schedule Professional Maintenance
Consider scheduling annual or bi-annual professional maintenance checks for your gas appliances. Certified technicians can inspect, clean, and identify potential issues that may need attention. Regular maintenance can help prevent costly repairs and ensure your appliances operate efficiently.
4. Follow Manufacturer's Guidelines
Always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines and user manuals for specific maintenance instructions. Each gas appliance may have unique requirements, and following the recommended guidelines will help you maintain them properly.
By following these expert tips, you can keep your gas appliances in top shape and minimize the need for frequent repairs. However, there may be instances where professional help is necessary.
When to Call a Professional for Gas Appliance Repair
While some gas appliance repairs can be tackled as DIY projects, there are situations where it's best to call a professional. Here are some scenarios when professional assistance is recommended:
1. Gas Leaks
If you suspect or detect a gas leak, it's crucial to evacuate the area immediately and call a professional. Gas leaks can be extremely dangerous and require expert intervention to ensure safety.
2. Complex Repairs
If the repair involves complex electrical or gas-related components, it's best to leave it to professionals. They have the expertise and specialized tools to handle intricate repairs safely and effectively.
3. Under Warranty
If your gas appliance is still under warranty, attempting repairs on your own can void the warranty. Contact the manufacturer or authorized service center for assistance to ensure the warranty remains valid.
4. Lack of Experience or Confidence
If you lack experience or confidence in handling gas appliance repairs, it's always better to seek professional help. Attempting repairs without the necessary knowledge and skills can lead to further damage or safety hazards.
Remember, the safety of yourself and your home should always be the top priority. When in doubt, consult a professional to ensure gas appliance repairs are done correctly and safely.
Gas Appliance Repair Cost and Budgeting Tips
Gas appliance repair costs can vary depending on the complexity of the issue and the specific appliance. Here are some factors to consider when assessing repair costs and budgeting for gas appliance repairs:
1. DIY vs. Professional Repairs
DIY repairs generally cost less since you only need to purchase replacement parts and potentially some tools. However, professional repairs ensure expertise and may come with warranties or guarantees.
2. Replacement Parts
The cost of replacement parts can vary significantly depending on the appliance and the specific component. Research and compare prices from reputable suppliers to find the best deals.
3. Labor Costs
If you opt for professional repairs, labor costs will be a significant component of the overall repair cost. Inquire about labor rates from different service providers and consider their expertise and reputation when making a decision.
4. Maintenance and Prevention
Investing in regular maintenance and preventive measures can help minimize the need for repairs and reduce long-term costs. Consider scheduling professional maintenance checks and following manufacturer's guidelines to keep your gas appliances in good condition.
When budgeting for gas appliance repairs, it's essential to factor in these costs and make informed decisions based on your specific situation and budget constraints.

The a/c experts at The Energy Centre highlight the importance of investing in a unit that fits your home’s square footage and layout, your budget, and your family’s needs. They also remind you not to forget to consider ongoing maintenance costs and energy efficiency.
To help you choose the best air conditioner for your house, the air conditioner specialists at the Energy Centre answered some commonly asked questions:
What type of air conditioner should I choose for my house?
The most common and efficient types of air conditioners for residential use in the Ottawa area are central air conditioning systems and ductless mini-split systems.
What are the benefits of a central air conditioning system?
Central air conditioning systems provide even cooling throughout your entire house, effective dehumidification, and better air filtration options. They can be integrated with existing ductwork, which is common in many homes in the Ottawa area.
What are the benefits of a ductless mini-split system?
Ductless mini-split systems offer individualized temperature control for different zones within your home, avoiding the need for ductwork. They can be more energy-efficient and are suitable for houses without existing ductwork or where extending ductwork would be impractical.
What size of air conditioner do I need for my house?
The Energy Centre a/c technicians advise that the size of the unit you need for your house depends on several factors such as square footage, insulation, ceiling height, and number of windows. An air conditioner installer can conduct a proper load calculation to determine the correct size for your specific requirements.
What is SEER and why is it important?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it measures an air conditioner’s cooling efficiency. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the unit is. Choose an air conditioner with a SEER rating that meets or exceeds the minimum required by local energy efficiency regulations.
How can I improve the energy efficiency of my air conditioner?
To enhance energy efficiency, make sure your house has proper insulation and sealing on doors and windows; use a programmable thermostat; keep the filters clean; and, schedule annual a/c maintenance with a professional technician from The Energy Centre.
How often should I replace my air conditioner?
Air conditioners typically last 10 to 15 years. Consider replacement if your unit is older, experiencing frequent breakdowns, or not providing adequate cooling and energy efficiency.
What air conditioner should I get?
When it comes to air conditioner brands, The Energy Centre recommends considering the following options:
Aire-Flo®: With 50 years of experience, Aire-Flo® air conditioners are known for their reliability. The 14 SEER units use eco-friendly refrigerants and are factory-tested for durability and performance.
Armstrong Air®: Armstrong Air® air conditioners offer exceptional energy efficiency, with models going up to 20 SEER. Their two-stage performance allows for adjustment based on humidity and temperatures, providing comfort while conserving energy.
Ducane™: Made by Lennox, Ducane™ air conditioners are affordable and dependable. With SEER ratings ranging from 13 to 16, many models are ENERGY STAR® certified and come with extended warranties. Each unit undergoes rigorous testing before shipping.
Goodman®: Goodman® air conditioners prioritize environmental friendliness with their use of chlorine-free refrigerants and high SEER ratings. The Goodman® DSXC18 even comes with a lifetime limited warranty on the compressor, reflecting their confidence in the product.
Keep Rite®: Manufactured in Quebec for 50 years, Keep Rite® offers various product lines to suit different needs. The ProComfort™ series features high SEER ratings and two-stage compressors, while the Performance series provides a more budget-friendly option with the brand’s backing.
Samsung® HVAC Mini Splits: Samsung® HVAC Mini Splits are ideal for heating and cooling rooms without ductwork, such as additions or rooms with unique temperature requirements. These energy-efficient mini-splits are easy to install and provide personalized comfort.
