mac classic, next and osx were calling them apps before ios and android had ever seen a public

they're packages, not just the program binary. you can open them up and see everything. it's a different paradigm from DOS-informed windows, and from the usual POSIX userspace.

i'm forty in a few months, this paradigm is old as me. surely we can understand "these are various applications of this system's capabilities." surely we can understand a package is not just a program, nor a script, but may contain both and more. surely we can understand mac classic was a very flexible system, as was next, which is literally all of the apple operating systems now.

apps isn't what's restricting your phone, and it's not restricting your computer, either. and there are systems that are not windows and are not PC-DOS derivatives, each with their own paradigms you'd know a hell of a lot more about if not for microsoft strongarming the competition out of existence.

anyway these are applications of your system's capabilities. use them, see them as examples and see if you can come up with new ones.

next, be, haiku and the apple ecosystem are all the children of mac classic. along with apps we get automation – a visual scripting language chaining actions across apps on a file, which can be called repeatedly from a menu. we get droplets – specifically described processes from a single app that can be carried out on a file, like say you want a specific kind of compression with a specific setting ready to carry out on files as they're made; now rather than opening the whole thing up, you drag and drop the droplet over the file and it does what you wanted, using minimum resources and minimum time. and we get to use bash scripts because POSIX, these aren't presented as anything but scripts; you can perform any actions you want on any files you want, using any process with hooks.

first computer i ever touched was an apple ][, not long after was a macintosh, most my life in computers has been away from windows, using either linux, a bsd (including osx) or haiku.

not to enforce gender roles but a computer should NOT fucking have apps okay. if I wanted an app I'd go on my phone my laptop is for Programs. I mean this.

I think as a result of their indecision, general dithering on every possible decision and inability to provide a single sliver of rationale behind the actions they have taken, I personally don't think we can judge Bell's Hells on whether or not their decisions are moral or not. Have they wishy-washily and passively avoided every hard question that could have been asked of them? Yes; but that speaks to a lack of interesting ideas and a lack of curiosity on their collective behalf in dealing with the scenarios set before them. I think if we judge them on anything it is the consequences of their actions (or inaction). Realistically, I reckon (depending on how releasing Predathos goes) they will be treated in a similar way to how someone like Vespin Chloras was treated by history - a damned fool whose actions lead to the annihilation of civilisations, the destruction of millions of lives and as such has been (rightfully!) condemned by Exandrian history as one of its greatest villains. Our softening of our view as a fandom on Vespin comes from his editing of Zerxus' pact to save the world from the rage of the Primordials. I think his actions, typical of the Age of Arcanum, echo Ludinus' fatal ideological folly in assuming that they would lead to prosperity due to a change in the divine structures of Exandria; Bell's Hells, having followed Ludinus' plan to the letter, now risk becoming as big of villains as Vespin Chloras for even worse reasons - a total lack of imagination and a deep unwillingness to engage with any hard question that would force them to face their lack of interiority as a party.

Interesting thing happened at my partner's job. Suddenly corporate is cracking down on dress code. So the district manager is giving them a hard time about it. Mostly just to my partner because my partner wears sweatpants to work. He's a large guy so its difficult to find pants that fit comfortably and stay up and he can't wear a belt because we can't find one in his size and suspenders put too much pressure on his shoulders/back. No one has ever complained about him wearing sweatpants. But suddenly it's a problem. Except all his other coworkers who are all women can come to work in leggings because apparently leggings are workplace compliant. My partner went to work in leggings today. I borrowed him a pair. We were both mildly worried someone was going to start something with him about wearing 'womens clothes' at work but apparently every customer that mentioned something thought it was also unfair that he couldn't wear sweatpants anymore and didn't blame him for being maliciously compliant by wearing leggings. Plus he got a ton of compliments on his legs. He has very shapely legs that look really good in leggings. He also thinks they're comfortable and is just okay with wearings leggings to work from now on if he has to. We're looking into getting him some with pockets since that was the only problem he encountered is that he's used to carrying all his stuff with him.

Sometimes I think, Shinigami King!Light. He'd revolutionize the Shinigami world, bringing in 'jobs', 'money' and internet from the human world. Suddenly, the Shinigami realm is so much more lively that even Ryuk finds it interesting to live there.

Dead!L can go to Hell and take over there. No one can tell him what to do. L has the demon king who tried to order him around over thrown. There isn't food he likes to eat. So, L funds culinary revolution in Hell, including sponsoring air cons, refrigerators, mixers, ovens, etc. Now no one wants to escape Hell because its better there than the human world.

Eventually though, L ends up dealing with the sudden influx of souls caused by Light bringing 'jobs' to the Shinigami Realm. L is once again on the hunt to stop Kira.

Ikr! Especially because he was not technically supposed to survive possession. He was supposed to die in the fight so who knows what kind of side effects he's gonna end up with. Maybe he's left with some of Lucifer's tricks. Like he snaps his fingers once and the person next to him is instantly vaporized. That would be very fun for me personally

that would also be very fun for me <3 i love when sam is in pain and i think accidentally vaporising/killing someone with his powers would cause so much guilt for him, but also fear that dean will once again see sam as something to be hunted like he told him in s4. @supamerchant left some interesting tags about his emotions affecting his powers, so the more upset he gets with himself the more his powers fuck things up, a never ending feedback loop overwhelming him to the point where he'd do anything just to make it stop. and maybe his desire to make it all stop is fuelled by hallucifer taunting him that its his own grace left inside sam that's causing all of this, and sam thought being lucifers vessel was bad but having his grace linger in him might be worse.

i love tech. i love this era of information. i googled a bazillion different sources when i made my Windows/Linux dual boot last year because i've always been paranoid to change OS. Everyone said it worked fine. I open Windows for a couple hours today and it updates the BIOS against my will and breaks the dual boot. I look it up and now all of a sudden I find ten billion tech bros saying that yeah, actually, this happens all the time, and you should have installed the EFI (no explanation given, you know what an EFI is, of course you do) in different drives, and it could have been much worse because Windows could have just corrupted the ubuntu boot somehow yeah it does that of course, and you should have also turned off secure boot, that's something you knew how to do and had to do it, obviously, how do you not know all this.

why is via rail trying to charge me $7 to choose a different seat than the one they randomly assigned to me. they didnt do this before. ever since they introduced their new booking system, ive been able to go into the Seat Selection Tool and choose any available economy-class seat for free. now suddenly theyre demanding an extra 7 dollars on top of my 80 dollar train ticket. PLUS tax. "oh you didn't want a backward-facing aisle seat? suck it up or give us 7 dollars. fuck you"
