Tennal is a vapid socialite with the ability to read minds, and Lt. Surit Yeni is a soldier with a chip on his shoulder who has been tasked with using his own neuromodifications to overpower Tennal’s will and conscript him into service within the space military. But Surit’s not (that much of) an asshole, so they lie to all the space soldiers with all their space guns. But then a chaotic salvage-retrieval mission upends a decades-old power struggle and also compromises the security of their falsehood. Can two unwilling weapons of war bring about peace?

Ocean's Echo is a queer space opera in which Tennal, a disaster socialite with mindreading powers, gets conscripted into the space military and ordered to soulbond with his fellow soldier Surit - an earnest and well-intentioned type who follows his own personal ethical compass with the single-minded devotion of a bull in a china shop.

It's what you would get if you took Lois McMaster Bujold's body of work and decided to make it revolve around queer soulbonding. It somehow made Publishers Weekly's Best Books of the Year list. It's in the same universe as Winter's Orbit, but you don't need to have read that - it stands completely alone.

If you like awful main characters who fall into disasters and proceed to make them everyone else's problem, love interests who have memorized the ENTIRE rule book, and a deep commitment to space mindreading powers on the author's part, then *waves hands*. And it has an incredible cover, which I had nothing to do with at all, so feel free to buy one just to rip it off and stick on your wall.

Queer Book Draw Challenge 6/20 Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell (ie @avoliot )

This was such a good book! I don’t really have the words for all the feelings that this book gave me. It was comforting, it was adventurous, it was political, and so many other things. I just loved this so, so much.

I loved the dynamic between Kiem and Jainan once they got past all the awkward miscommunications (and lack of communication). I loved that Kiem was so bubbly and talked with literally everyone, and that Jainan was almost the complete opposite. I loved all the political drama, the murder mystery, and everything else that this had going for it! Somehow this world felt familiar and yet not at all, if that makes sense. Winter’s Orbit was just so good and I’m giving it five stars.
